for more of this, let's go to meteorologist chad myers. good morning. >> good morning. everything is doing well. i checked the airports. we may slow things down in dallas, austin, houston later on today with the rain coming in, but for now, all airports are in and out very, very well. this will be snow in the rockies and rain in the plains. heavy rainfall possible for houston later on today. let's get right to it. here we are right now. rain across new york, cleveland, but the story is that storm. it will develop into this weekend's slowdown, and a lot of the slowdown is going to be rain. our temperatures are going to be 50. we are nowhere near a snowstorm from chicago all the way down to the gulf coast. temps are way above normal. i saw computers printing out 30 degrees above normal. >>> as we work our way into the beginning of christmas eve, there will be snow from indianapolis back down into parts of nebraska and kansas, but the rainfall is what we're going to be seeing from the great lakes all the way to the gulf coast and even into florida. there may even be some h

chad myers unless the weather center. chad, where's the bad weather and where's it heading next?ll in south dakota, nebraska, kansas, colorado. that's the worst of it. what's happening right now is that the sun is setting. even though the sun on these pictures, you can't see it, it's actually warming the ground a little bit. when that sun goes away and the roads are a little bit wet, that wet becomes ice. so that's the black ice we are going to see tonight in this area toward the west. it is slowing down. the storm is now cut off from the moisture source. we call this a low pressure system that is kind of just swirling around. i like to call it a ho ho. you get the idea. there's not any additional moisture getting into the storm so there won't than much additional snow. there will be ground blizzard conditions. we still had over a foot of snow in spots. now it's just blowing around, it's just going in all different directions. so even though some spots have picked up a foot of snow, as you saw, there was a three-foot drift, then you could see the driveway. that's how it's been go

let's go over to chad myers who is in the weather center. chad, how are the next few days shaping up? >> reporter: well, wet for new york city, boston, philadelphia today. and also low clouds. although i'm very surprised. according to flight aware, only 140 airplanes have been canceled so far today. out of thousands and thousands in the air at this point. now, a couple thousand, 3,000 are delayed a little bit. that's typical when you have full flights and everyone is trying to get on the same flight at the same time. sometimes it takes 10 minutees to get the door closed. there's the rainfall in new york. the rain in pittsburgh and now the storm that made the snow in nebraska, colorado and kansas, it's winding down. it's lost its moisture and energy. there could be one to three inches of snow. it's over st. louis tonight. at sunset, that could be a problem. the moisture and energy shifted to the east. that's where the rain will be. there's a slight risk of even some flooding from pennsylvania and new jersey. the delaware water gap and then th

cnn's chad myers joins us with the latest now. is there a chance to storm actually lets up so people can find a window to get home? >> reporter: yeah. i mean there's only 98 cancellations at the airport right now. it's not really that bad. 3000 delays, sure. planes are being 15 or 20 minutes late, but if you are only canceling 100 planes in a day that's pretty good. the people who have to drive through this, proof of a white christmas in nebraska, also south dakota and parts of colorado. what if you have to drive in this, this is where it is slow driving. it's still good across parts of the east and northeast. tomorrow is when the fog rolls in, the low clouds into those big airports in the northeast, that will be slowing things down again. we are kind of a big pinwheel here, and this is the area we are seeing snow. back out here towards the west, those are the blizzard conditions. we have some spots here with over a foot of snow. if you take that and you blow it around at 60 miles per hour you are going to get a blizzard without a

cnn's chad myers has our look ahead. >>> an unusual time of year, but kind of the way spring tries to bring warm air to the north, pushing away the cold air, while the wintertime tries to push the cold air down and the warm air away. it's the same clash between the air masses. and so we will see the potential for severe weather today, especially tonight. and likely really after dark tonight. there is the area here that we most likely will see a tornado risk, small, but still the threat of gusty winds over 70 miles per hour, and even the potential for some hail there. the rain does move up the east coast for tomorrow. could be a blustery day for a lot of nfl games tomorrow afternoon for sure. and then snow back out into the colder air behind it. that's where the cold air will be. it does look like all the big cities will just be wet, not white. but you get into the poconos, the adirondacks and catskills, certainly there will be snow. and by sunday, there will also be some wind along the east coast as that low tries to run up the east coast and make kind of a small nor east coastal low.

cnn's chad myers joins us right now from the weather center. hi, chad. merry christmas. >> merry christmas, danny. the rain is now going to be moving into florida and all the way up to minnesota. so this is a top-to-bottom kind of storm. severe weather possible across parts of florida, heavy rainfall in places that really need it. and then, this is going to turn into a blizzard into parts of nebraska, south dakota, and even kansas. in fact, blizzard warnings are posted there already. difficult travel across i-80, 76, i-90. now, it's a long drive across those interstates, and i take that from experience. but that's a foot of snow in parts of south dakota. that's a lot. and then the rainfall here across parts of the mid-atlantic states. so now let's get to it. 6:00 tonight, it's raining from chicago all the way down to florida. move you ahead until tomorrow, and this is where people are maybe driving back home. i-95 going to be wet. 75 as well. and there's your blizzard back out, even getting some snow to denver and maybe even in the mountains. we'll take

joining me is cnn meteorologist chad myers. chad, great to see you on this christmas eve. wow, that looks like a lot of nasty weather in the midal /* middle of the country. >> only 134 planes according to flight aware have been canceled today. with all this weather, from minneapolis down to new orleans and houston. 2,000 flights have been delayed, but only 134 actually said no, we're not going. in all honesty, this area is in a dreadful drought. they're saying you had 364 other days to rain. did you have to pick christmas eve? here we go. we'll take the grain when we can get it and not look back. there will be areas with 2-4 inches. could cause certainly ponding on the roadways. some of those highways could be flooded for a time. something else that's going on. an awful lot of wind. you talked about the snow. a blizzard warning in effect for parts of nebraska. winds will be 50. it's going to be snowing like crazy. it's not going to stop for the next couple days. moving ahead to tomorrow, noon, still raining from minneapolis -- it's raining from minneapolis to the gefl coas

here to break it all down for us, meteorologist chad myers. good morning.hat sounds like a white christmas for some. >> for some, absolutely. if you're going to the mountains, skiing in colorado, even down toward mexico there could be snow on the ground and trying to wrap up late sunday night into kansas city. this is a rain event. yes, there are some winter weather advisories, but the weather in the warmth -- we're talking 50s for temperatures in the plains. no chance of snow there. there will be heavy rainfall in parts of the plains, all the way down to houston. that could slow things down. the only delays out of orlando, we're seeing 10- to 15-minute delays there. only 40 airplanes so far today have been canceled, and that's out of thousands. so we'll take 40. there's the snow coming in through denver and around parts of minnesota into the dakotas. rain down south is where we could see the slowdowns. not a great weekend to have christmas presents for the outside, especially across the've part of the u.s., anywhere from st. louis down through atlanta. it'

we have chad myers with a closer look. fortunately not a 2,000 mile crack. officials say the lava flow down to a quarter of last night's levels. that's got to be an encouraging number. >> reporter: it true will is. there's five of the mountains left. when i was watching mesmerized and terrified really. depending on how close you were. some of them were 500 feet tall. spewing hot lava. now why did this all happen? well, because there's something called a mid atlantic ridge. there's an area in the atlantic ocean that separates north america from europe. that split goes all the way down through here. north america is going that way. europe is going that way. and along that split, right through iceland, because it's there. that's why iceland is there at all. that's where the earthquake and all of those earthquakes and the volcano happen. as we zoom in, we'll take you closer to where this happens. up here to the north where there have been earthquakes and volcanos before, in fact, some of these shield volcanos are still there. we have a power plant here and somet

chad myers is at the world weather center with more. >> most of this storm now is still in the gulf of mexico. but by later on today, it will affect florida. tomorrow the carolinas and by monday it will be in the northeast delaying or canceling flights. so let's get to it. the storm is still west of florida. by later on this afternoon, heavy rainfall and flooding all the way from jacksonville down to south florida. there may even be a few tornadoes embedded because the storm is spinning so much. this is a nor'easter without snow. it's just not cold enough. there's no snow on the backside of the storm to put down nor'easter-type snow. but we'll get rain, we'll get the wind, we'll get the surge, we'll get windment coming on shore pushing that water on shore and causing beach coastal erosion and sol of these bays, rivers andest wares will be flooding for sure. so yes, rain today. look how much rain in the carolinas tomorrow. 4 inches likely of rainfall. on top of those mountains, that water has to go somewhere. it will try to slide back into the ocean, but it's going to take time doing it

chad myers has more. >> reporter: just in from the copernicus climate change service, november was themest november on record and probably to no one's surprise. 1.75 degrees celsius, 3.15 degrees farenheit, above pre-industrial levels. we didn't really start out in the record territory, but we got there in a hurry. june, july, august, september, october and now november were all records by a large margin in some spots. and, yes, november of 2023 will take this line and push it all the way into record territory. there is very little if anything december can do to not make 2023 the entire year the warmest year on record globally. because we are so far above where we should be. in fact some days we're even two degrees celsius, 3.6 degrees farenheit, above normal. there was a little bit of an area where october and into november, but now we're so far above the old line which was 2016, another el nino year. but 2023 will be the warmest year on record for sure. >> climate activists are confronting heads of oil and gas companies at the cop 28 summit. protestors are calling for an end to the u
