aaron, what do you think? that's obviously a big topic for them. why not talk about donald trump, if it's such a big topic for them. >> you guys know, ron desantis and nikki haley, they've gone after each other on china, much more than trump, and i think it just sort of kind of, it's the same as the other issues and ways that we talk about how ron desantis and nikki haley, all the candidates have had to deal with running against the former president, and they've had to walk a fine line between criticizing him and trying to distance themselves from him on certain issues. while being careful not to upset the republicans including especially those in i still like some of the things that the former president did while in office. so we will be seeing a balancing act sort of, and only recently are we starting to see an increase in those more pointed criticisms of the former president from candidates like desantis and haley. >> aaron, i want to stay with you because obviously the news out of perry, iowa, the high school there, a shooting taking place. we

she would do if she did win, right, is nowhere close enough, i don't think, to doing what, you know, aaron was talking about in the context of a republican primary where it's clear people have made their bed. their loyalty is to donald trump. >> you're totally right for these candidates throughout this sort of campaign. the concern around alienating trump supporters really and trump's base has completely dominated the strategy thus far for both of these candidates. it has led to hess ten stoi attack him and also -- hesitancy to attack him and answering direct questions whether the history of the civil war, whether it be other questions that have to do with race relations in america, that's when you've had the sprawling, unclear, you know, answers that i think do frustrate undeclared voters in new hampshire as well. >> on the flip side of that you have what you always have no matter who is running at this point in the election, things start to get uglier than they were before, but when there's donald trump in the race, and he is trying to make his supporters get off the couch and make clear

or participated in last night. >> look, i was struck early on in the debate when nikki haley basically said, my opponent is donald trump. that's who i'm running against. then basically for the rest of the debate was engaging with the guy who really wants to bring her down because he's worried she's going to take second place in iowa, at which point desantis would have a hard time moving forward. i think the setup of the debate was tricky for her because it made it so there were two candidates and she really had to respond, if he was going to go after her, she had to respond in kind. she got bogged down at a time where she wanted to drive at least some kind of a message that was geared more toward donald trump and she wasn't able to do that until the end of the debate when there were helpful questions that brought the two of them out a little bit. >> we tried at the beginning on donald trump, but they weren't going there because they did seem so determined to take one another down. and you just have to look at the url, the website she mentioned like more than a dozen times. let's just g
