meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking it all for us.lous for my spirit, allison, where is this going to be and for how long? >> yeah, that's the question. i will point out, victor, it's not quite as warm as you think. 40s is what folks are feeling. all of the red dots are showing areas that have had their warmest winter to date. orange dot indicating certainly within the top five of the warmest winters to date. you'll notice a lot of them are blustered across the midwest and northeast. that's having an impact on snowfall. because most of the precipitation they're getting in the form of rain, marquette, michigan, syracuse and erie. all looking at 50 inches lower than what they would normally have this time of year, even minneapolis and cleveland, about 2 feet below average for snowfall. it's not just snow but size. great lakes looking at 5%. normally, this time of year, 30% of that ice coverage. it's probably not going to increase anytime soon. all of these dots that you see here have a potential to break record temperatures in the next

meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking it all for us good morning. how is the recovery looking so far? >> a little slow. honestly, there's still rain in the forecast. that's going to limit how quickly they can get in and clean a lot of this it up. this was a very moisture-rich system that moved through california. it's starting to spread into the rockies. and again, look at the tremendous amount of rain that fell across several of the areas. bel air, california, over 13 inches. even downtown los angeles, picking up over 8.5 inches. as we said, it's still raining. nowhere near the amount of rain we have seen the last few days. but still, even at this point, half an inch, it's going to exacerbate the flooding in southern california. we're starting to see more of that moisture spread into eastward states as well. you still have some of the flood watches and warnings in effect with several of these expected to come back down as we go through the next few hours. here's an overall scope. you can see still some rain showers in southern california. a new sto

meteorologist allison chinchar is joining us.his is shaping up to be a significant form. >> and some of these places had record rainfall on thursday and some had the wettest january on record. the ground is already saturated before this moisture arrives. it's going to start across central california before shifting the bulk of the moisture into southern california as we wrap up the weekend and head into the early upcoming week. for some areas you're looking at a level 3 atmospheric river producing a substantial amount of not only rain, but also snow. but since we have the saturated ground already, that's going to exacerbate the potential for flooding. you've got flood watches that exist for pretty much up and down most of the state of california. but it's going to be spread out over different days. the focus today is mainly across portions of the coastal areas of central california. by sunday it still includes those, but we start to see a shift into southern california and we also start to pick up additional moisture, increasing

. >>> let's go to allison chinchar at the cnn weather center.d talking about the acute risk at the moment. those looking forward in the next couple of hours, what's causing all the flooding and rain? what should they expect? >> right, yeah. the reason behind this, the reason why we're getting so much rain and those strong winds is this atmospheric river that's set up. you can see that plume of moisture down there south of hawaii, that's basically creating a fire hose into california. and it has been for the last 48 hours and will continue for at least the next 24 hours. you're still looking at intense amounts of rain and snow. the snow especially across the sierras, the rain along the coastal regions and the mountain. let's look at where that rain is right now. because we have incredibly heavy rain amounts still coming down across northern california, places like eureka and crescent city and then especially into southern california. that's where some of the biggest flooding is on going at the moment. numerous flash flood warnings and flood warni

. >>> let's go now to allison chinchar at the cnn weather center.ison, we just saw what chad is experiencing on the ground and what's to come. can you talk about the cause of all of this? >> yeah. the cause is an atmospheric river funneling the moisture into california. it has been for the last 48 hours and will continue for the next 24. it's not just southern california. even areas of northern and central california are still getting some pretty heavy bands of rain right now. but the heaviest rain is still focussed over portions of southern california. specifically across areas of los angeles. that's where we have a lot of these active flash flood warnings. what that indicates is that it's active on going flooding. so you're having landslides, you're having flooded roadways. a lot of these areas from los angeles, stretching back west towards malibu, scenes like this. this is from yesterday. but this may still end up happening today as more rain is expected to come in across many of these areas. you look at some of the rain fall totals so far, you'r
