you have ben cardin saying that the administration would be good right now to come and ask for a war authorization from congress because he does envision this being a more permanent sort of military campaign against these iran backed proxies. >> they could barely keep the lights on on congress let alone approving congressional authorization. that is the appreciate point and the question is whether they could do that and get the votes. that is a whole different question. but this comes as there have been concerns about the president's handling of the israel-hamas war. not just from republicans and independents, but democrats as well. this is just the latest snapshot of 51% of democrats, a bare majority, give the president approval. and independents, that number 34% and 18% for republicans here. this is all playing out in the key battleground states. i caught up with one democrat from michigan, hillary skillton and i asked her how this is playing out in her home state and whether it is impacting biden support. >> there is a lot of pain in our state right now. we have large arab america

cardin saying that maybe that the biden administration should ask congress for an aumf, specifically. what are your thoughts on that? >> well, it's quite interesting that when president trump took out soleimani, which did over the following months restore deterrence, democrats when president trump did that demanded that he come for authorization. he didn't have the authorities. the difference is, bret, if we hit iranians in iraq across the middle east, then we do have the authority to do that right now just as president trump did. we start going inside iran proper that's a different measure and i do think you need to come to congress at that point. >> bret: congressman deluzio we have these "common ground" segments really every week. we had more and more of your colleagues in the house and senate coming up talking about what they are working on. a lot of common ground happens when it comes to homeland security and the military, y'all are working together on some things what do you tell people who say things don't get done in washington? >> i say focus on some of the places we are wor

. >> the chair of the senate foreign relations committee, your fellow democratic senator ben cardin says that he believes president biden should come to congress for a new authorization for military action. do you believe the white house should seek congressional approval for additional military action? where's the line on that? >> well, so there is a line that is approximately 90 days from the initial responses. that will happen sometime, i believe, in march or april. i do think that if the president does continue to move forward with responses, that there is a need to bring an authorization for use of military force to the floor of the senate. this is what i say to my republican colleagues who are calling for us to take it to tehran, some of them say. if you want to attack tehran, let's have that conversation on the floor of the senate. let's show a tiny percentage of the bravery that our troops are showing in harm's way by having that discussion on the floor of the senate. and then let's have a vote. you want to attack iran, let's have a vote on the floor of the senate and let's have
