another hour of velshi begins, right now. good morning, sunday, february the 4th. i'm ali velshi. in case you hadn't heard, with all the missiles flying around, there was an election yesterday, the democratic party held its first official primary of this election cycle in south carolina. and the result was on surprising. as an incumbent who wasn't facing any credible challenge, joe biden won the contest in a landslide. yesterday's race, if you can even call it a race, stands in stark contrast to what happened in the last presidential election cycle. for years, ago the south carolina primary was high drama. biden lost badly in the first three states that held caucuses and primaries in 2020. he placed fourth in iowa, fifth in new hampshire, and a very distant second in nevada. heading into south carolina, to make his presidential campaign was on its last legs. but just days before people head into the polls, biden received a key endorsement from the south carolina congressman james clyburn, one of the most powerful and influential black lawmakers in the country. it helped biden lock

i'm ali velshi in for nicolle wallace.t a few hours ago, attorneys for donald trump filed a brief defending their can client's place on the ballot in that critical 14th amendment case that's before the supreme court over whether his role in the january 6th insurrection bars him from running for office. oral arguments before the justices are on thursday. we are also hearing from special counsel jack smith, his prosecutors are mounting a defense of the classified documents probe in a filing to judge aileen cannon. we're going to have more on that in a little while as well. we begin with developments in the middle east where the threat of further air strikes looming across the region and a furry of diplomacy with one goal, preventing the war in gaza from widening even further. president biden and his officials say there will be more air strikes in retaliation for the deaths of three service members in jordan by iranian-backed militia groups. officials are not saying when they'll take place or how they'll be carried out, just

i'm ali velshi in for nicolle wallace. an incredibly important question looming over democracy, can presidents be held accountable for crimes committed in office. a unanimous ruling by the d.c. court of appeals rejected donald trump's claims of immunitity in the federal election case. the decision by the judges is a stinging rebuke of the ex-president in what has become a months' long push to get the charges against him dismissed. in their ruling, the judges make the point that while donald trump is a former president of the united states, he is in the eyes of the law, just another criminal defendant. for the purposes of this criminal case, frp has become citizen trump with all the -- any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as president no longer protects him in this prosecution. prosecuting presidents for things they did in office would have a chilling effect, finding, in fact, the possibility of legal legal accountability would, in fact, be a boost to the rule of law. quote, the risk of crimina

i am ali velshi. we continue to follow the situation in the middle east where the israel and gaza war continues its steady creep outward, threatening to explode into a widespread regional conflict or worse at any moment. within the last hour, u.s. central command announced a round of strikes, targeting six houthi anti ship cruise missiles preparing to launch among ships in the red sea. this is the latest in the series of strikes that the united states has conducted against the houthi forces who have been targeting vessels, commercial and military, that are sailing among the red sea toward or from the -- to the crossing in egypt. it is related, but separate from the campaign against iranian-backed proxy forces which are operating in the region, and there are iranian antlers operating alongside them. that started on friday. the biden says that friday strikes against these groups on u.s. troops in the region since the october 7th attack on israel. that includes last sunday's deadly attack on tower 22. it
