i thank you very much indeed forjoining me from port—au—prince.e it. hello there. the rain has been pouring down on wednesday in snowdonia, in wales — there was about a third of a month's worth of rain injust 12 hours. things are not looking quite so dramatic over the next few days. there will be some further wet weather, rain or showers, and for many parts of the country, it's going to be mild — particularly across england and wales, where we've seen the milder air coming from a long way south. things are a little bit chillier to the north, in northern scotland. in between, we've got the weather front — that's been bringing the rain, but that's moving northwards, taking wet weather into scotland and northern ireland. there's the wet weather that we've got in northern ireland and southern scotland — that moves its way northwards. for england and wales, there may be a bit more sunshine arriving in a southerly breeze before those showers push across from the west. but we're introducing some slightly drier air from france, hence the cloud breaking up

his exit was the primary demand of haiti's powerful gangs who took over the capital, port—au prince,or a un—backed police force. the transitional council — announced by the caribbean community bloc — will be in charge of nominating a new prime minister. but haiti's gangs are demanding a seat at the table. our central america correspondent, will grant, is just outside of haiti and sent us this report. this is the dajabon border crossing between the dominican republic and haiti, and we have already seen dominican authorities deporting haitians back in to the poorest country in the americas at a time that it is facing its most acute humanitarian crisis since the 2010 earthquake. it is also that they are being deported into a political vacuum. prime minister ariel henry stood down, citing the fact that his situation was untenable given to the violence on the street of the capital, port—au—prince. his decision came after the caricom group of caribbean nations and the us secretary of state held an emergency meeting injamaica, and made clear that they saw the roadmap towards a transitional

the situation in port—au—prince remains very volatile.gang members were killed in a weekend operation to clear roadblocks and seize weapons in the delmas district of the capital. they've been trying to arrest the leader of the gangs controlling most of the capital. 0ur central america and carribean correspondent will grant gave us this update on that. well, it appears there was quite an extensive swat team operation in an area of the capital, and that is where there is known to be one of the strongholds of this gang. they were clearly trying to capture the leader or kill him but they were successful in neither of those attempts. they were a number of casualties in the gangs by all accounts, but if anything it has beget more violence. today there has been more shooting in the capital, and a quite fierce response from the gangs to the operation by the police. this paints a picture of what is going on, really. it is a sort of cat and mouse game going on in the neighbourhoods, with the police who are outnumbered by the gangs at this stage, un

that is the demand of the armed gangs that have seized control of most of port—au—prince.en't had elections in haiti since 2016, they've been living with a president since 2021 when he was assassinated —— living without a president, so the prime minister was elected to get something going. the problem is in haiti for many years, there's been a tension between security and politics and there's never been enough security for the political reforms needed to move on. the ex prime minister was in kenya, trying to rustle up support for a un mission of policemen and women, a lot of them from kenya, this was agreed for a new cabinet to come in —— a new force to come in to bolster the police force because there is a complete weakness of state institutions, almost state collapse, so the key question is does the removal of the prime minister unlock some of those processes? at the moment, there is such a degree of lawlessness on the streets of port—au—prince, i think there has to be a question mark over that. there are various plans to try and move things on politically but until we c
