this is at the intersection, as you mentioned, of newark boulevard and jarvis avenue here in newark. someone called 911 around 430 this morning to report that this man was causing some sort of disturbance. newark police say that he is not homeless, but that they have made contact with this man before. now, when the officer arrived, the man was holding a gun in his hand. according to police. it turns out it was a bb gun or an airsoft. they haven't determined what it is yet, but the police officer didn't know it at the time, according to police. so the officer shot the man with a 40 millimeter sponge, which is considered to be less than lethal force, and also shot him with his service gun. not clear which weapon the office officer fired first. again the man was taken to the hospital, again with non-life threatening injuries. police say that the station's surveillance camera shows that the man was not behaving appropriately before the officer shot him. so back out here live, you can see the items that the man had are still out front of the gas station. newark police, they say they want
