u.s. and chinese officials meet for a final day of talks to prevent a looming trade will. follow him down in jordan this is al jazeera lawyer from doha also coming up thousands are told to leave their homes after one of the world's most active volcanoes erupts in a wide plus. some information i am aware of and some i'm not one caught off guard top white house officials struggle to defend president trump differing versions of the scandal involving a former porn star. and a major victory the man is in south africa who contracted fatal lung diseases on the. crucial talks between the u.s. . and china are into the final day trying to resolve differences that push them
11:02 am
close to a trade war the two sides have been meeting in beijing but analysts say a significant breakthrough remains unlikely china in the us are two of the world's biggest economies and both the proposed high tariffs on each other's goods well there are plenty of other issues the two countries differ on the u.s. as long accused china flooding the global market with metals at low prices market access is also a problem the u.s. says american companies can't compete with the chinese on a level playing field it's also difficult for u.s. businesses to trade in china and then there's the trade deficit the gap hit three hundred thirty seven billion dollars last year which is more than half of the total u.s. shortfall in goods and services donald trump wants china to reduce that by one hundred billion dollars let's go live now to our china correspondent adrian brown in beijing age and both sides have been downplaying expectations of a breakthrough at the talks expected to end in a few hours time so what's your assessment of how things are going.
11:03 am
well i guess the fact they're still talking could possibly be seen as good news these talks mean that we're perhaps a step further away from there being a trade war happening any time soon but let's look at the composition of the people in that room there really is a mixed bag of experience on the u.s. side we have people like a peter navarro he is a white house trade an economic advisor who cited some pretty blunt things to say about china he's written several books that criticize chinese trade practices but then we also have people like robert lite hisor who's the u.s. trade representative who's an advocate of free trade on the chinese side we have lou her who is a vice premier very close to president xi jinping and then of course we have the issues on the table it's not just tariffs i think that is the real sort of area of contention here at the moment i think it's chinese trade practices generally the
11:04 am
united states is worried about chinese industrial policy in the years ahead particularly xi jinping made in china twenty twenty five because this involves billions of dollars going to state owned companies in new technology areas and the u.s. is worried that really china is beginning to dominate this sector globally and we've seen a bit of pushback actually from the united states in the last few weeks for instance the u.s. department of defense of now been ordered by the government not to purchase chinese made mobile phones the use of phones made by way their d.n.a. which are both companies that received substantial subsidies from the chinese government so yes these talks are continuing but i guess the longer they go on the more the possibility that perhaps they could stray into saturday or even the the weekend and i john there are reports that president xi and his vice president will meet the u.s. side is that likely if there is no agreement. i
11:05 am
don't think president xi jinping and his vice president one xi showing will want to meet the u.s. trade delegation if there's no good news president xi jinping tends to meet foreign leaders foreign dignitaries when there is good news and in fact on friday darren president xi jinping has had something else on his mind namely karl marx whose two hundredth birthday falls on may the fifth on saturday he was addressing a large gathering of communist party officials in the great hall of the people extolling the virtues of marxism and also saying basically that the communist party leadership the membership as well need to remember their communist party roots as she jingping strives for the great rejuvenation of the chinese nation and part of that rejuvenation of course is standing up to foreign powers over trade adrian brown there in beijing adrian thank you. ten thousand people in hawaii have been

ordered to evacuate their homes after the killer way a volcano erupted steam and love are threatening at least one residential neighborhood the volcano erupted after a series of earthquakes the national guard has also been deployed well can a through bit as a professor vulcanology at the university of hawaii he says killer is one of the best monitored volcanoes in the world and the evacuation should go smoothly. kill always been erupting continuously since one thousand nine hundred three for the last decade in two other locations and started a couple of days ago a series of events unfolded after which there was a migration of earthquakes into this residential part of the volcano it's what we call down river it's. about fifteen kilometers away from where it had been active in for roughly two and a half days or has been a high frequency of earthquakes and the residents in the area have been reporting things like ground cracks in the roads so this part of the island is not high risk
11:07 am
zone it's very sparsely populated it's. urban to rural i would say many of the homes out there are not fully connected to water systems and the electrical grid for instance and so there's a protocol for people who live in high risk zones in hawaii our risks and our risk from volcanoes also we have tsunami inundation zones along our coast so people who live in those areas become prepared ahead of time bout what the evacuation plans and where the shelters will be set up where they should go they oftentimes have boxes or. sensual stuff that they want to sit with them ready to go and it's fairly well coordinated now the u.s. president has changed his story about hush money paid to a former porn star stormy daniels says she had an affair with him a decade ago donald trump denies this what trump now admits reimbursing his lawyer
11:08 am
for the payment made to donald but says it was not part of the campaign fund white house correspondent can be held at reports. as shifting story for us president donald trump appearing at the white house rose garden ironically on the national day of prayer trump spoke about the importance of faith but nothing. about a lie he told reporters a month ago aboard air force one you're very. stormy daniels is an adult film star who alleges she had an affair with trump a two thousand and six trump's lawyer michael cohen paid her one hundred thirty thousand dollars during the presidential election campaign to keep quiet and for the first time a member of the president's legal team rudy giuliani admitted the president knew about that payment from the through over the president repaid back to put the president in legal jeopardy because the campaign never disclosed the payment add it

exceeds the twenty five thousand dollars legal limit for contributions that money was not campaign money sorry i'm giving you a fact now that you don't know it's not campaign money but melanie sloan a former federal prosecutor says that legal argument is flawed if they made the payment to stormy daniels with the intent that it influenced the campaign it can be an in kind contribution which also can be a felony given the amount on thursday trump defended the move on twitter saying payments like the one to daniels are very common among celebrities and people of wealth the white house press secretary defended the president's shifting story of the night she'd ever lied to reporters instead suggesting the president had also left her in the dark those first awareness i had was during the interview last night and i'm giving the best information i have some information i am aware of and some when i can answer i will but beyond that i really don't have anything to the
11:10 am
latest scandal follows a shakeup and doll trumps legal team two lawyers have left in the past two months just as there are more questions about another controversy whether or not trump's presidential campaign colluded with russia kimberly help at al-jazeera at the white house well matthew mccovey yak is a republican consultant he says trump is convinced the media are biased against him . in terms of press conferences in terms of of interviews with media organizations trump is is far behind his predecessors done very few interviews anywhere outside of fox news i do stand very very few press conferences that said they are briefing every day that you answer questions they asked answer questions at events he answers questions with foreign leaders usually to two for each side every time you as a foreign leader with him at the white house so they are somewhat accessible it's not
11:11 am
quite as accessible as predecessors then but i also would add though that this administration has been attacked more consistently by the press corps probably than any president since nixon the relationship between the white house and the press corps is as bad as i can remember it in my almost forty years of being alive i mean it really is a war every day and i remember back when steve bands in the white house used to call the media the opposition party and i think for a lot of republicans they see the press corps as trying to impeach truck every single minute of every single day and i think that's part of the reason why trump lashes out at the press corps the french president to manual microphones visiting the pacific island of new caledonia where he's been greeted by thousands with pro frons ronnie's micros first trip to the french territory comes ahead of an independence vote in the van but the majority of the island's indigenous counted ethnic group support a full breakaway from france and to tell us more now from noumea. there about so
11:12 am
you thousand people taking part in this profile rons march these are people who come november will vote for the new caledonia through a main parts of france the holding it now of course because president mccrone is in the territory and i want to make that very clear to him officially the president is neutral in this upcoming referendum he says what he wants is the whole process to be seen as bad as the distant because that's years ago when there was another referendum on independence here that was not like takes the. we wanted independence did not see it as legitimate and they boycotted the process of all process brought down there was violence more than seventy people were killed nobody wants that to happen this time around this referendum has geopolitical consequences as well china is increasing its rates in the pacific having a french territory right in the middle of it with a big french military presence as well as in macros eyes and other leaders are these important part for the geo political balance time for

we sort of also yesterday twenty two says a cooling trend here you see the orange now all know whole there's not much on that frontal system want to showers maybe most of the energy is in the showers here so from really greece through slovenia and switzerland particularly it's really you know we haven't we showers it will cool down overnight the circulation continues the showers continue is much the same place actually the winds going to be quite strong off the air coast you can see from that point of view and we're down to nineteen in warsaw but we're in the sunshine is still thirty here so the heat is still there for north africa this is the area where you know what to expect these wind rain not particularly warm to the east this streak of cloud hides the differential it's hot in us one not quite so in kyra. the weather sponsored by. going green bacteria in a. gas escaping from. this is really.
