calculation. donald trump said i know how to produce a great show. i know how to make things happen. what do you see in the numbers? >> clearly the democrats out rating the republicans this week. hillary clinton versus donald trump, the main event, we don't have the numbers yet. i suspect given the trend all week long, clinton out rated trump. it is interesting to see that. >> how much more? >> 10% to 15% ahead of the republicans during the democratic convention. you should argue it could be higher. so many democratic stars on stage the first three nights. >> and stars period. >> exactly. it is interesting to remember that only about one in ten americans, chris, tune in every night to the conventions. still a lot of people who are not choosing to watch the speeches. they hear about it through these shows and smartphones and twitter and things like that. in terms of the ratings race, i expected and most people expected donald trump to out rate the democrats. given his ratings magnetism and

history on "the apprentice." clinton last night, even the imagery. think about the imagery in the white outfit versus the darker clothes. light versus the dark. all of that symbolism adds up to something meaningful. >> you mean a better show. it wasn't riddled with production issues? >> there were some of that. >> or do you mean they rolled out every single person with star power they could find? >> both of those are true. the production of the democratic convention seemed to be more professional and more organized. both had elements of drama. that helped in the ratings. the story lines. i talked to sam feist. he covered 12 conventions. these were his favorite two. there were actual news. >> surprises. >> reasons to tune in. at the end of the day, the democrats, i think, it was surprising to see the numbers be

so strong. there's been this perception of donald trump as the higher ratings draw. it is changing a little bit. donald trump doesn't necessarily rate the way he did a year ago when you have him for an interview or speech. >> everything gets old. what did you think in terms of what moment stuck out to you in the dnc? because we're just finishing it up. >> i go back to monday night and michelle obama because of the tone she set for the week. i thought she signalled to the audience how the week would be. there were issues with the rnc, but fewer of the political stars. ultimately it was better to go second. the issue in baseball. it is better to go second. in this case, the democrats, because they were the ones in power, they got to choose. it was better to go second because they now framed the conversation. my take away last night is the only thing we have to fear is donald trump. that is my take away from the

speeches. >> donald trump said two contradictory things about the star power of his own convention. first, before it, he says it is very important to put some show biz into the convention. otherwise people will fall asleep. then afterwards, he said i wasn't looking for star power. i was looking for policy. >> right. he made an interesting choice yesterday. he put out a fund raising e-mail yesterday morning. unless you want to be lied to, don't tune in to hillary clinton's speech. a lot of people determined that to mean he was insecure or anxious about the ratings. he was worried about how well he would stack up against clinton. just so you know, he had about 30 million viewers last week. we'll see how high hillary clinton's ratings are. if he does end up losing to her in the numbers, we will take that personally. >> he is also known for his ability to take attention away from things. >> right. >> do you think he has done a good job of that with the

convention? whether it was the russians should hack us or yesterday, listening to these speakers, i want to hit them. >> he was effective in terms of getting people to talk about him and getting his name in the papers and on tv. with negative attention, with donald trump, all press is good press. >> brian, let us know when you get the ratings in. >> we will. >> thanks. >> no question that last night had very high stakes for hillary clinton. the speech was going to be seen by tens of millions of people and this was it. this was her moment. how would she do? especially in such a tight election. we have more coverage next. said sure don't get just any one. get one inspired by dentists, with a round brush head. go pro with oral-b. oral-b's rounded brush head cups your teeth to break up plaque and rotates to sweep it away.

clinton accepting the nomination for president. the first woman to ever lead a major party ticket. she shared her personal history and presented a sharp contrast she chose to fill it with attacks on him. she called for americans to rebuke his i alone message and unite at what she called a moment of reckoning. what happened, what will be its impact, we have it covered for you completely. let's begin with cnn's joe johns live at the convention hall in philadelphia. joe? >> reporter: chris, you know when you look at a speech like this by hillary clinton or anybody else, you look at the setting, the goals, the words the candidate uses, the reception of the audience, of course. by all accounts, i think people can say hillary clinton accomplished what she set out to do with this speech. it was not soaring rhetoric, but it was reintroducing herself to anud
