hill on that play. >> derrin: mike montgomery coaching up his team. like sean miller, he says the one thing he wants to see more of from his young team is they need to be a little tougher. he had some great teams in stanford, jacobson, these guys getting on the floor in the pac 10. that's one of the things he wants to see more of from his team. >> marques: i think the stanford teams were tougher than this cal team. arthur lee, julius barnes, the point guard. the officials look at the play and decided there was nothing flagrant by gutierrez. >> derrin: derrick williams wants to work on boykin. he goes up strong.

series. they beat arizona state on thursday, and now with a four-point lead gns the wildcats of arizona. wise splits the double-team and a blocking foul by robertson. >> marques: mike montgomery thought they did a pretty good job with their position defensively. again, nic wise puts so much pressure on you. and he's got the starting lineup back on the floor after a brief rest for the freshman derrick williams who needed it because he was kind of throwing the ball away, got a little fatigued, not making his normal decisions with the basketball. >> derrin: saw the graphic there talking about the sweep in the desert. nic wise's first free-throw is good, 89% for him with a great free-throw shooters in the history of arizona basketball.

we are at the cumberland county public library and say of the north carolina speaking with author of a home on the field how one championship team inspires hope for the revival of small-town america. mr. cuadros, what made you decide to write this book? >> i decided to write this book because i noticed that what was happening in the the of rural communities in the south and midwest was a space change, a migration of latino immigrants to the small towns that i knew was a way to transform of the culture and those communities. i thought i was a very interesting story and when the

what influence and change the country and for ways and that is a story of is interested in doing and capturing. >> why did you choose styler city what did you find? >> i chose styler city because at the time they had to poultry processing plants, feed mill, about 300 chicken farmers in the county and was an easy choice because the food processing industry is a big generator for white people are migrating from mexico or central america into the small town communities. >> when you're there you are writing about people who didn't want immigrants living in their town but they wanted to benefit from having immigrants living there in the sense of the sood labor they wanted their food cheaper. how did you talk to them about this dichotomy? >> the town is a chicken council it runs on the poultry processing industry, and the people in syler city began to

see the city changed quite rapidly during the nineties and they responded to it in various ways, a lot of confusion, and there was a really interesting and difficult part to capture for the town folks, the longtime residents of syler city. since then, they've come to an accommodation with the migration. syler city is perhaps more than 50% hispanic today and the town has been transformed and changed and that to the economically it has done a lot better. the times are tough now for everybody that there's no doubt the growth of syler city during the nineties and early part of 21st century is due to the chicken workers, the foreign workers that have come and settle there. >> you had a unique approach you used to assimilate the newcomers. why did you choose soccer? >> i choose to the to -- to a

soccer because i was bored, didn't have anything to do. i've played completing high school, and i got involved in a group of boys coaching them and quickly it became apparent to me that there was no varsity team at a high school and the latino boys definitely wanted to play a high school and had been advocating for several years to create a team at the jordan high school. unfortunately the administration didn't think it was a good idea and so i lead an effort to try to get a team together at j.m.. we were successful and had success on the field with these kids but really, the boys served as a means to let you know who the community is, why they've come, with their dreams are, what their hopes are and how they are assimilating into the society. >> what do you think we as a country where government need to do regarding immigration policies, what you think needs to be enacted? >> this is a complex question to answer. the president has called on

beginning a debate about immigration or migration and hopefully that will happen this fall. dreeben proponents to provide some sort of access or pathway to citizenship for some of the migrants who have come and perhaps that is a good idea. there are people of course opposed to that. i think when you look at the kids, the team and where they've been they've grown up here and have gone to the schools here and they have assimilated to the society. they are having children of their own and getting married, having children of their own, and yet the immigration status may be in question. i think that for that population something needs to be done to assist them to integrate into the society. >> are you still in contact with any of the students in the research and? >> i am. i went to one of the kids his son turned 1-year-old last weekend so i went to the birthday party. was actually pretty good.

>> what is the summer program and what role does europe early in the program? >> the summer reading program is a program that is designed to basically get incoming freshmen to read one particular book and then to begin to talk about the issues in that book. and this year they've chosen home on the field which i'm very grateful for so we will be talking about some of the themes and issues in the book itself, issues like immigration, migration, globalization, assimilation, all those issues we've been discussing and what makes it kind of good i think for the university is that the students will be basically reading about people their own age and people that have had a very different experience than they had, and hoping they will be that connectivity between the characters and the readers. >> what is next for you? any books on the horizon? >> i've got a lot of different projects and interested in doing. i think this is a fna
