and that will get singleton back to the free-throw line. and because of the fourth foul, demontez stitt will check back in. as you mentioned, offensive for defensive institutions. we'll see plenty of them between now and the end of this one. >> mike: saw oliver purnell trying to get some size out there defensively. >> tim: and a reminder, immediately after our game, it's game two of acc sunday night hoops, our doubleheader, duke and virginia. duke now because of -- well, two reasons really, the thumb injury was one factor. but today earlier michigan state did beat perdue. one would think the squad could be the beneficiary for possible number one seed, especially if they are to continue this roll that they're having in the acc regular season and win the acc tournament. >> mike: michigan state thinking the same thing. they could be. >> tim: absolutely.

and a quick 30-second timeout taken. only 27% on the year for tanner smith. but really, a timely shot for him. and here is the drive. you get the two-man game and you're setting up singleton. snuck in on the post player, allowed tanner smith to get a good look. when they lost terrance ogles by, that smith would help in that area. he's got a great stroke. the percentage just hasn't been good. >> mike: but i don't know that that was such a bad defensive play by singleton. he didn't want grant getting inside. he was sitting in his lap. you got a guy who is not proving himself as a three-point shooter, but tanner smith came up big. percentage-wise, that's the way to play. >> tim: you just get a feeling use watch the game, mike, and at some point clemson, they just continue applying this pressure. florida state's fortunate that
7:34 pm
they haven't turned the ball over any more than they have. and if you don't get the steal, then you're going to have to make free throws. >> mike: that's really the tempo of this game. >> tim: been very difficult for florida state to get the ball past the court. each time they went along the sideline. >> mike: and i can't think of any agency in the game either where they have gotten it past half-court, but gotten back in their offense. >> tim: if you're just joining us after clemson's largest lead, 32-27 here in the second half, florida state went on a 9-0 run. >> tim: reid, that looked to be a lot of leverage by booker.
7:35 pm
the foul committed by tanner. >> mike: it wasn't a great closeout that time by jerai grant. used the pump-fake well and got into the paint. >> tim: second foul on booker. >> mike: you see this right here. you have to come out of control. grant got turned around a little bit, out of position and that forced booker to step up and make a play. >> tim: generally going to get whistled, and he was. lauderdale links, the home of ryan reid. came to florida state by way of boyd anderson. >> mike: they made their last pitch at the line after being 7 of 14. they're certainly going to have more chances one would think before this is done.
7:36 pm
>> tim: stitt finds booker. right back to demontez. out of bounds to florida state. they have an over rule here. >> mike: he's down. >> tim: sure. well, his hand was hurt, now his ankle is hurt. >> mike: a tough night at the office. >> tim: has he ever. loucks is going to check in for him. >> mike: i think the team you get loucks and another ball handler against clemson. >> tim: still a two-possession game with 1:48 remaining.

trying to work the pick-and-roll. kitchen. singleton puts it on the bench, and in doing so going to induce -- i like that play. again, looking for a second like he was going to settle for the three. instead of doing that, put pressure against the foul call. >> tim: mike, he does have an innate ability to put it on the deck and face up player. and then the creative skills to at least get fouled when he goes inside. don't forget coming up. there was a time in the season you would have said he was the player of the year this year. he'll have to have that kind of evening against duke. >> mike: against duke they have a way of taking out the top four.
7:38 pm
>> tim: a good matchup. two big misses by singleton. opening the door for clemson with a minute and change left. young, he rattles it home. and it's a one-possession game with 1:10 left. >> mike: nice play after the three-man games. >> tim: snaer back out there. reid has it swept away. grant gets it started. three-on-one to stitt, and he is fouled. boy, exactly what oliver purnell would have prescribed. let's take a look at this two-man game right here. he just reverses and uses booker again to get the screen and knock down the shot. >> tim: that was the first block, mike, by clemson as jerai
7:39 pm
grant came up with it at just the right time. >> mike: at the other end, reid trying to off the dribble. and grant figuring this break and getting two free throws. >> tim: just like that. demontez stitt to make it a 1 point game. >> mike: if you're clemson, no foul and in that situation, just play solid defense. >> over time, that kind of pressure and clemson will deliver weighs on you. and while florida state is able to stave them off for much of this game, you got a feeling that it was only a matter of time before they had a chance to maybe get back the lead in this game. and jerai grant's block certainly has given them the chance. >> mike: that's the one thing that with florida state, they don't have the act to pull away from you offensively and bury you. and certainly they had an opportunity to do that in the first half.
7:40 pm
clemson's defense that. >> came up and defended very well and allowed themselves to stay in it. you let a team linger like that, their confidence runs, they played much more efficiently offensively in the second half with the tigers. >> tim: when you inquiry now what leonard hamilton has in front of him, first and foremost, make sure that the best guy inbounding the ball does so, and this none of those guards, mike, can run away. they've got to come back and help, don't they? >> mike: it's got in the perimeter three-ball handing. you've got loucks, kitchen and snaer, all who are very good with the basketball. and you've got your bailout guy in solomon alabi. if you're clemson, you do not have to foul here. you're going to get it back with plenty of time to maybe factor your own shot. >> tim: you don't want to be in a position to have to make free throws to close this one out if you're florida state. they've been inconsistent there as well. >> mike: if you're clemson, the guy you want to put on the line is singleton. >> tim: look at that.
7:41 pm
snaer losses. the tigers with a chance to take the lead right here. and 15 second differential between the shock and game clock. the 20th florida state turnover. young for three. yes! >> mike: how about the drive and the foul and the fill-in behind by young. what a terrific play. >> tim: 49-47. loucks will get it over mid court and a time-out. this worked out just the way oliver purnell wanted. first the turnover. snaer just lost it here. >> mike: you wonder if he had a hurt wrist, if he couldn't catch the basketball. but young digging in. and this is the drive in. everybody collapses. the good kickout by booker. what a big-time shot by andre
7:42 pm
young. we said he'd be playing in winning time together. indeed. >> tim: super sophomore that had that career game in the first meeting. back at littlejohn. and as oliver purnell told me, he said this guy is one of our big-time players. how about the reaction emotionally from the clemson bench? watch this? >> mike: it's been to two shots andre young. they had the same reaction at the end of the first half, and he comes up big there. how about those six points in the game? >> tim: that's your basketball game right there. and that sense of urgency, mike, by the team that appears to be more desperate. i believe is the theme of the weekend in college basketball. >> mike: a lot of upsets with the higher ranked teenagers. a lot of road victories, which hasn't been the case in this league. >> tim: room for notre dame in the big east. that was yesterday. louisville today.
7:43 pm
now florida state reaches for the tie right here. for the win, the three-ball. alabi, he is fouled. booker was airborne. foul committed by number 3. >> mike: they cleared out a lot of space. he has a open look over the top inside. the best free throw shooter. 81%. coming into this game. think about it. gone to the line 109 times. improving the free throw shooting for florida state.
7:44 pm
in fact that's his specialty. >> tim: you can certainly appreciate it too, mike as a guy that will take you to the free-throw line a great deal in college as well as in the pros. you were always up and around 80, 85%. >> mike: you don't hang your resume on making a 75% shooter an 80% shooter. but when you can take a guy in the 50s and make that jump, that's a major overhaul, a reclamation project. >> tim: our game reset. each team with a time-out remaining. which could be crucial. particularly if they tie the score at 49 with this next free throw for solomon alabi. if you're clemson and thinking of the potential of needing a bucket late, andre might be your good night. he is the just for men player of the game.
7:45 pm
>> booker comes down with it. that's just the pressure of the moment. we talk about free throws and percentages. and it's all about scoring clock. and he did pull the string a little bit on that. it wasn't the same follow-through. >> tim: singleton picked up the foul. that was all that florida state could do. booker will get to the free-throw line. now dulkys is going to check into the game. brian reid will sit down. so you get another three-point shooter on the floor. >> mike: booker 3 for 5 tonight at the line.
7:46 pm
>> tim: if he makes it, florida state still has a chance to tie wit a three. clemson and the free-throw shooting over this last stretch in the last five minutes of the game, up over 80%. the lead is three. stitt will quickly check in for clemson. and jerai grant sits down. >> mike: well, let's see what happens here as they get the clock under five seconds. >> tim: dulkys. singleton to get the quick time-out with 7.2 remaining.
7:47 pm
this game is so huge in the middle of the acc conference. you look at the story for clemson. this is just so big for them, mike. largely because it would give them their second road victory in the conference. and for florida state, if they could get to 9 and 5, it will virtually -- and they've got another home game left. for clemson it would assure them .500 in the conference and give them 20 wins, which wasn't the benchmark today that it has been in years fast. but it still looks good on the resume. the road win is the big part of that. >> tim: with the games coming up that they have, imagine the confidence that you glean from having a road victory against a team that has won three in a row in the acc like florida state has. >> mike: i'm curious now to see what oliver purnell does to the situation. if one, he decides to wrap up, and at what point did he decide to wrap the guy up on the outside and not let them hit a bomb. you are definitely building a
7:48 pm
wall around the three-point line and defending on the outside of that. >> tim: one would think too, mike, 7.2 remaining, they would need desperately to get the ball up quickly when opportunity. >> 7.2 seconds left in florida-state-clemson game. they have tipped off. we'll get you out to that game as soon as they conclude. right now clemson and sfu, 7.2 seconds left in regulation. >> tim: shooting a paltry 22% in the first half. a great half-court shot gave them the momentum necessary to make a strong run here in the second half. kitchen will inbound it for florida state. dulkys and snaer, both options along with luke loucks. dulkys from the way it was projected by booker, and he quickly fouls. >> mike: first team all defense, acc. wow.
7:49 pm
>> tim: what a play. they're switching everything. what you want to do in that situation. you've got smalls out there. you can do that. and then booker watching a three-point attempt. see him out there, he is recovering. he reads the play correctly. and even with the quick release able to go up, not only block it, but gets the possession back and forces a foul. >> tim: that was mindful, mike of the one syracuse had in the game against kansas for the national championship. they had one. booker. no doubt about it. booker may put this one away. a shooter's touch. >> mike: this is a game that would have been better served on radio. but at the end of the day, it is a huge win for oliver purnell. much more important win for them.

>> dan: one of the adjustments that they have made is assane sene and jerome meyinsse together in the game. >> rich: farrakhan in the lane. zoubek patrolling there. he got a piece of that pass. shot clock running down, farrakhan has to get it up. he does. it draws iron and virginia will keep that possession. tony bennett right now telling the official that the ball hit the rim. from our vantage point, it looked like it did. >> dan: i'm not sure it hit the rim before the shot clock expired. and that's the issue. the ball does hit the uess it did hit the rim before the shot clock expired because they're going to give it back to virginia. meyinsse comes down with the

rebound and the cavaliers will keep it. >> rich: and they get a fresh 35. zeglinski and sene, this is the turn-around. zoubek sucks up a rebound. virginia has very few offensive threats on the floor right now. not only is landesberg out for the night, mike scott not on the floor. singler shot blocked. >> dan: mike scott hasn't been an offensive threat when he was on the floor. didn't score against miami, didn't score in the first half tonight. >> rich: zero of seven at miami and zero of four in the first half here tonight. evans, fouled out high. with jenn hildreth. >> jenn: yeah, i talked to tony bennett coming back on the floor. his team really in a tough situation, one they haven't been in all year not having sylven

landesberg. he said defensively we need to be more sound. we cannot give up easy shots to duke on the defensive end. offensively we panicked and took some early shots. we just need to calm down but likes the effort. >> rich: jenn, for tony bennett and the rebuilding projects he's been involved in as a player, as an assistant coach, defense has been the cornerstone because his father, one of the best defensive coaches in recent ncaa history, dick bennett. >> dan: well, but your defense, it's always harder to play defense when you can't score. and i don't know that there's any real connection, objective connection that you can make between the way you play offense and the way you play defense, but if you simply struggle to score on offense, it makes playing defense that much more difficult. >> rich: virginia would be okay if tony bennett had some more eligibility left because he could flat out score when he was in college. he is still the all-time leading

three-point shooter percentagewise in ncaa history at wisconsin green bay. virginia coughs it up. smith is tackled at half court by farrakhan. >> dan: nice job that time by the duke defense staying in front of farrakhan. he wanted to take the ball to the basket. >> rich: there's tony with ritchie mckay, his top assistant, by his side. tony averaged over 20 a game for his father and was part of the rebuilding process at wisconsin and at washington state. scheyer, step-back three. >> dan: how did he get that ball past meyinsse. did he dribble that ball between meyinsse' legs? that was really a weird-looking thing. he lost control of the ball, somehow regained it and made a three. >> rich: strong move but he couldn't flush it.
8:49 pm
>> dan: you're not going to get very many better opportunities than that if you're the virginia cavaliers. you can see virginia really trying to pick up the tempo defensively. >> rich: singler's miss, meyinsse has it. and it's a duke foul. >> dan: we were talking about that last play by jon scheyer. as he takes the ball, he's going to take it, he dribbles it right over the leg of may instan-- me. he got the opportunity to take it from jon scheyer and you really need to do so because he gets on balance and gets scared away very quickly. >> rich: a good deal of our pregame chat with mike krzyzewski centered on scheyer. and all that he means to this team. the scoring ability, his leadership, valuing the ball, his defense. >> dan: he just has a very good sense for the game and that combined -- people joke about it but he is a very good athlete. you know, he's not a guy who's
8:50 pm
going to jump out of the gym or run a 40-yard dash in three seconds, but he moves very well, he moves his feet, he has great eyes for the game, great mind for the game. >> rich: scheyer's miss. i think that's part of athleticism. >> dan: that's my point. i didn't articulate that very well but you don't have to run really fast and jump really high to be a good athlete. >> rich: meyinsse, and he's going to the free-throw line. if it zoubek, it's his third personal. >> dan: you know, there was a time when people talked about somebody who was a good athlete who could do a lot of different things. that might mean play a lot of different sports, but just had a lot of different skills. that's what jon scheyer has. so he's an athlete in the old way.
8:51 pm
>> rich: it it's not like he's a rundown old jalopy when it comes to his physical skills in the new day. >> rich: in a 6'5" point guard who values the basketball, who has one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the country and scores 19 a game. is he the player of the year in the acc? >> dan: i really think that the player of the year in the acc is between he and greg. >> rich: they'll meet this week when duke and maryland square off. scheyer drains it. >> dan: just as we're talking about it, he gets himself in position, lets the ball go and he scores. all this business about how he's not really athletic, he's just really smart, well, he is really smart and he is pretty athletic and he's got some great basketball skills. >> rich: thomas knocks away the farrakhan shot. this is scheyer. with thomas following. can't save it and virginia has

>> rich: about 45 minutes before this ball game started, it we inal purdue. michigan state beating pu, and that means one, t and eego d i twe utbe iav onofth >> dan: and you notice number one, two and three, they all go down but number one and two go down on the road and michigan state wins on the road but against a depleted purdue squad out robbie hummel but the duke blue devils really taking care of business here tonight. >> rich: jenn hildreth has more on duke. >> jenn: just one of the things that in the back of the duke

players' minds when i talked to jon scheyer, you know, his senior class has never won an acc title. since coach krzyzewski took over in 1980 and won his first acc title the '85-86 time, since that time they have never gone more than two years without winning the acc or the tournament until now. but they all know what's at stake. it would sure mean a lot to him and his class to get that acc title. >> rich: hoecoach krzyzewski, j, told both you and dan and me tonight that the ability of this team to focus on the task at hand is what separates this team from some of the others. this team, he said, really doesn't care about who got upset today, really doesn't care about who's doing what. evans, singler, farrakhan followed. when you play the last game of a

weekend like this and the one, two and three teams go down and you're number five, duke came out and made a real statement early in this game. singler, nice soft touch. >> dan: well, one of the things you heard chris collins talk about at halftime as he was going off was that they wanted to tighten up the defense on the three-point shooting by virginia. even though the cavaliers missed open shots, virginia has had no three-point looks in this half. >> rich: farrakhan, that's a push by singler. . >> dan: you can just see the virginia offensive players. they're in a little bit of a hurry here. farrakhan had more time on that. he made that shot much more difficult than it needed to be. you do the jump stop, you go up and shoot a jumper rather than that little floater that was very flat and hard. they were fortunate to pick up

the foul. >> rich: they have been leaning so heavily on sylven landesberg these last three weeks that they really seem lost without him. zeglinski, scott is in along with jeff jones for virginia. if you just joined us, landesberg has not played, deep thigh bruise. ev evans takes it to the bucket. two shots coming up. thursday night the lights are on, the house will be jumping, a pac-10 double header, arizona state trying to keep their tournament hopes alive takes on usc. ucla will take on arizona. it starts at 8:30 eastern, 5:30 pacific on thursday night. >> dan: one of the things we talked about before the game, rich, was if virginia was going to pull the upset, they were a 75% free throw shooting team, they had to be able to get to the free-throw line.
8:58 pm
they have not been there very often tonight. that's only free throw attempt number six and seven. >> rich: four for seven now. jontel evans forces a duke turnover. >> dan: and duke has not turned the ball over very much. that's only four turnovers in the ball game now. >> rich: the plumlees are in, mason and miles. that was miles with the block and the foul. >> dan: good catch that time by meyinsse, just not quick enough
