i don't scare them in the tiniest bit. what scares that is you. -- scares them is you. [applause] them is that the old reagan coalition is coming back together, of conservatives. [applause] we are saying conservatives and evangelicals and libertarians and reagan democrats all coming together as one, and that terrifies washington, d.c. [applause] and so to the people of iowa. heidi and i say thank you to your incredible hospitality. thank you for welcoming us into

your homes come into your living rooms. thank you for welcoming my father to preach from the pulpits of your churches. [applause] say to my parents -- mom, thank you. -- thank you, for the incredible, unconditional love that you have given me every day of my life. the knowledge that whatever i might do, whenever i might say, that my mother loves me. [applause] to my cousin beebee, who is like

a sister to me, we grew up together. i love you. and to my dad. [applause] man who came from cuba at age 18 with nothing, with $100 in his underwear. he doesn't carry money in his underwear anymore. a man who was in prison, who was tortured, who washed dishes hour, who has lived the american dream, and a man who is today a pastor, traveling the country, preaching the gospel. [applause]

>> the american dream now coming to fruition. sen. cruz: my dad is 76 years old and yet, he has the energy of a teenager. you have been my hero my whole life. i love you, dad. [applause] when the sun rises tomorrow, this campaign will take the next step. we will continue to campaign the same way, sitting down person to leader, vfw h to returningkin' donuts, to the great state of new hampshire. [applause] and let me speak for a minute to the men and women of the state of new hampshire.

36 years ago, you welcomed to the granite state a candidate running for president who was also deeply disliked by the washington establishment and the washington cartel, a candidate who had been dismissed outright by the media. some polls had him 15-20 points behind. to let his that and the cartel and the media to do your thinking for you -- to let the establishment and the cartel and the media do your thinking for you, not accepting a position because of the latest media polls, but instead because of a conservative philosophy that grounded him so that he knew exactly what he believed, exactly what the principles were that built this great nation. [applause]

and so, tonight, i want to say what -- say to the people of new hampshire, thank you for what you did 36 years ago. thank you for giving america, and the world, and history itself, our 40th president of the united states, ronald wilson reagan. [applause] and i asked the people of new hampshire and the people of south carolina and the people of nevada and the people of the 1per tuesday states on march -- to interview, do not listen to our words. -- to each of you. do not listen to the rhetoric of our campaigns, but hold each and every one of us accountable. hold me accountable and every other candidate accountable to

be a consistent conservative. if you want a candidate to repeal obamacare, that support a candidate who has led the fight to repeal obamacare. if you want a president to stop amnesty, to secure the borders, and to keep us safe, that support a candidate who has led the fight to stop amnesty, to secure the borders, and to keep us safe. [applause] if you want a candidate to support life and marriage and religious liberty, that support a candidate who has spent decades of his life fighting to defend life and marriage and religious liberty.

if you want a candidate to defend the second amendment ,ight to keep and bear arms then ask of every candidate, where were you in the spring of 2013 when barack obama and harry reid and chuck schumer tried to undermine the second amendment right to keep and bear arms. candidate who will stand unapologetically with the nation of israel. that support a candidate who has led the fight over and over again to stand by our friend and ally, the nation of israel. [applause] and if you want a commander-in-chief who will

fulfill the most solemn obligation of the president to keep this nation safe, then support a candidate who has demonstrated a commitment, the judgment, the experience, the clarity of vision to identify our enemy, to call it by its name -- radical islamic terrorism. [applause] and to utterly and completely defeat isis. if i am elected president, every militant on the face of the planet will know, if you go and join isis, if you wage jihad on the united states of america, if you attempt to murder innocent

americans, you are signing your death warrant. [applause] i will tell you this. if the states across the country follow the lead of iowa and support this campaign, then i tell you this, this july in cleveland, you will hear these words spoken from the podium of the unified republican convention. tonight, i want to say to every member of the democratic party who believes in limited government and the opportunity -- and the united states constitution and a safe and secure america,, home. -- america, come home. [applause]

to the reagan democrats -- your party has left you. wantse republican party you. we welcome you back. together, this year, republicans and the reagan democrats can send an unmistakable message. the message of a reagan-like landslide that will once and for all drive be liberal elites and the washington cartel into the potomac and out to see. together, we can bring out economic security and the future

of hope that our children deserve. if we aspire to govern by a higher standard, a standard that transcends political party and race and gender and income, and to everyone who is tired of a president who divides us daily on racial, as they, -- racial, ethnic, gender lines, we will have a president that once again seeks to bring us together and unite us on our shared values of who we are as americans. [applause] the most solemn responsibility of the president is to keep this country safe. we will stop the weakness and appeasement. we will stop making excuses for global bullies and terrorists

and simply do what it takes to defeat them. i give you my solemn promise. we will finally, finally, finally secure the borders and and sanctuary -- and end sanctuary cities. [no audio] [applause] -- [applause] i want to speak for a moment to the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines. i want to speak to the moms and dads let a child serving overseas, i want to speak to the husbands and wives who wake up at night wondering if their loved ones are still alive, i want to speak to the little kids who have been waiting months and months to get a hug from daddy, a kiss from mommy. to all of our men and women sent into combat with their eyes -- with their arms tied behind

their back with rules of engagement that are wrong, that are immoral, that will and in january 2017. end in january 2017. [applause] you will have a commander-in-chief who finally has your back. and to the police officers and the firemen and the first responders, the heroes who rushed into burning buildings instead of out of burning buildings, the last seven years of having a president, having an attorney general that demonizes you, then vilifies you, that sidesith the -- that with the criminals rather than law enforcement, that will end in january 2017.

so tonight, the state of iowa, the democrats here seem to be a at a virtual tie between one candidate who admits he is a and the other candidate who pretends she is not. luck. them both but i will tell you this. as margaret thatcher observed, the problem with socialism is eventually run out with other eventuallyney -- is you run out with other people's money. [applause] let me tell you, tonight, i cannot wait to stand on that debate stage with hillary clinton. [applause]

win by speaking the truth with a smile. the truth is, the american people are fed up with washington, with the corrupt class that enriches itself and leaves behind the working men and women of this country. the truth is, the american people are fed up with a federal government that views the bill of rights and the constitution as a rough draft and and anonvenience -- and inconvenience and something to be set aside, and we are ready to take back the inalienable rights that are given to us by our creator. [applause] the reason all of you are here is the same reason i am here.

heidi and i have spent every waking moment for the last year. we love our kids. our girls, caroline and 5,herine, at age 7 and age everyone of us here, when we go to bed at night, we think, what kind of world are we leaving our kids? are we giving our children a brighter future? are we giving our children what our parents gave us, a country with greater freedom, greater opportunity, more promise, more hope? you want to know why i am getting on a plane in about an hour and flying all night to new hampshire to knock on doors and sit down and visit with people to ask for their support. becauseon is simple, when i look my girls in the eyes

10 or 20 years from now, i am not going to tell them we could have stood up to save this country but we didn't do everything we could. instead, i am going to tell them that millions of americans saw that america was in jeopardy, and we rose up together and said that we are going to preserve this nation for our children and grandchildren. [applause] to those who supported other candidates in this race. the republican party is so blessed to have a bounty of talented, young, dynamic candidates, people who are friends, people i like and respect. to those who supported other candidates, i will tell each of them, we welcome you as part of our team. [applause] together as one, if

the american people stand we want ourd say, " there is no," force in washington that can stand against the american people, that can stand against the grassroots, that can stand against our unity. we are going to do this together as a movement from the people. and i tell you tonight, iowa has made clear to america and the world, morning is coming. morning is coming. thank you, and god bless you. journey, there were 17 candidates. i was told by everybody, do not go to iowa. you could never finished even in the top 10. i said, but i have friends in iowa, i know a lot of people in iowa, i think they will really like me. i said, i have to do it. we finished second, and i want to tell you something, i am really honored. andnt to congratulate ted all of the incredible candidates, including mike huckabee, who has become a really good friend of mine. .ongratulations to everybody [applause] i want to thank all of the folks that worked with us. we have a great team and we will continue to have a great team, happy with how

everything turned out. i want to thank my wife and laura, and eric, and vanessa, and don. they were doing speeches. , i thinkdon and eric you did about six speeches today. i want to thank my family. [applause] we have had every indication. we have a poll where we are at 28 points ahead. new hampshire, we love new hampshire. we are leaving tonight, and tomorrow afternoon, we will be in new hampshire. we are going to be here next week and i think we will be proclaiming victory, i hope. i don't know who is going to win between bernie and hillary, i don't know what is going to happen with hillary. she has other problems, maybe bigger than the problems she has got in terms of nominations. but we have had so many

indications and polls that we beat her and would be her easily, and we will go on to get the republican nomination, and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie whoever the hell they throw up there. iowa, we love you, we thank you. you are special. in -- many,ack many many times. in fact, i think i might come here and buy a farm. >> that -- marco rubio won seven delegates with 23% of the vote. this is 10 minutes. ♪ sen. rubio: thank you. so this is the moment they said would never happen. for months, they told us we had no chance. for months, they told us because we offered to much optimism in a time of anger we had no chance. they told us because we didn't have the right endorsements or the right political connections, we had no chance. we did have a chance because my hair was not great enough and my boots were too high.

they told me i needed to wait my turn. >> this is your turn! [applause] sen. rubio: but tonight, here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to take our country back. [applause] this is not a time for waiting. everything that makes this nation great now hangs in the balance. this is a time when we need a president who will truly and defendd protect the constitution of the united states. not one that undermines the constitution of the united states. [applause] this is a time for a president who will defend our second amendment rights.

not a president to undermines them. this is a time for a president who will rebuild the u.s. military, because the world is a safer and better place when the u.s. has the most powerful military in the world. this is no ordinary election. 2016 is not just a toy's -- not just a choice between two political parties, 2016 is a referendum. it is a referendum on identity as a nation and as a people. as americans, there are only two ways forward for us now. we can either be greater than we've ever been or it can be a great nation and decline. if bernie sanders or hillary clinton get elected, if they were to win, we will be a great nation and decline. if they win, obamacare becomes permanent. they win, these

unconstitutional executive orders from this president become permanent. military begins to decline. if they win, the balance of our supreme court will be controlled by liberal justices for a decade or longer. they cannot win. hillary clinton is disqualified from being the president of the states. [applause] because she stored classified and sensitive information on her e-mail server because she thinks she is above the law. hillary can never be becauser-in-chief anyone who lies to the families of people who lost their lives in the service of this country can never be commander-in-chief of the united states. [applause] so tonight, i thank you here in iowa.

i thank you because tonight we have taken the first step, but an important step, towards winning this election. if i am our nominee, and i will be our nominee thanks to what you have done here in this great state -- [applause] nominee, we're going to unify this party and we are going to unify the conservative movement. when i am our nominee, we are going to grow the conservative movement. we are going to take our message to the people who are struggling paycheck to paycheck, to the students living under the burden of student loans, to the families struggling to raise their children with the right values, we will take our message to them and bring them to our side. we will unite our party, we will grow our party, and we will defeat hillary clinton or bernie sanders or whoever they nominate. [applause]

i want to thank an all-powerful and mighty god for the chance that he has given us to be a part of this endeavor here in iowa. i want to thank my wife and my family. [applause] i want to congratulate my friend, senator ted cruz, who worked really hard here in iowa and earned his victory tonight. i want to thank another good friend of mine, governor mike huckabee, for his service to our country, to the state of arkansas. he has announced tonight that he is suspending his campaign. we have tremendous admiration for governor huckabee and we thank him for all he has done.

two centuries ago, an extraordinary generation living in one place at one time here in ,merica, of an english colony declared their independence from the most powerful empire in the world. a powerful word in principle that our rights come from our creator, they do not come from our government. the rest is a two century history of the most incredible country in the history of mankind. i know america is special i know what life is like out of america. i was raised by people who came to this country with nothing. they barely spoke english at the time, they had no money. my father stopped going to school when he was nine years old. he had to go work. he would work for the next 70 years of his life. when my parents arrived here in this country, they were theyuraged, but

persevered. less than a decade after they arrived here with less than a decade after they arrived here with nothing. nothing. had a safe and stable home in a state and stable neighborhood. the most important thing of all for them, they left all four of their children with a life better than their own. this is the purpose of my parents life to give their kids a chance to do all the things they could not. that is not just my story, that is our story. that is america's story. that is the story of your parents. your parents who sacrificed and gave up so much so you could be what they could not. it is the story of those parents today who is doing the same. it is this that makes america special. it is this what we fight now to

preserve. this is the kind of country i want to leave for my children. this is the kind of country your children deserve to inherit. this is what we must now decide. whether we will remain that country or whether we will be the first generation to lose it. did --n important choice choice. one that each generation before us had to make. america is not a special country by accident. america is a great nation because each generation before us that their part. each generation sacrificed. they confronted their challenges. they embrace the opportunities. for over two centuries, each generation has left the next better off. now the time has come for us to do the same. the moment has arrived for this generation to rise up to the calling of our heritage. now the time is come for us to take our place and do what we must. when i am elected president, we

will do our part. [cheering and applause] sen. rubio: when i -- [cheering and applause] rubio: when i am elected president, we will embrace all of the principles that made america great. we will apply them to the challenges of this century. isn our work is done, here what history will say of this generation, it will say that we lived in the early years of this new century in an uncertain time. were.embered who we we rose up to the challenge of our time and we solved them.

did, did, -- because we the american dream reached more people and changed more lives. because we did, our children and grandchildren grew up to be the freest and most prosperous --ricans are we did it americans. we did what needed to be done. it was a new american century. [cheering and applause] sen. rubio: this is the task before us. my lord and savior jesus christ. i thank god for allowing me the opportunity to come this far with each of you. i am grateful to you iowa. he believed in me when others do not think this night would be possible. when perhaps you were lost in the daily narrative.

some suggested that perhaps it was time to step aside, you believed in me. you walked with us. you made the calls and knocked on doors. you made a huge difference. we are going to be back. i will be back here in october, next year. september of this year. [cheering and applause] rubio: because -- i said next year. i mean, back in october and september of this year, because when our -- because when i am our nominee, we are going to win iowa. [cheering and applause] tonight, while the results are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie.

[cheering and applause] and while -- >> bernie. bernie. bernie. resultsders: while the are still not complete, it looks like we will have about half of the iowa delegates. [cheering and applause] i want to take this opportunity

to congratulate secretary clinton. [cheering and applause] organization for waging a vigorous campaign. i want to thank governor o'malley -- [cheering and applause] it is never easy to lose. i have lost more than one campaign. he should know he contributed a whole lot to the dialogue. he ran an issue oriented campaign. he won the respect of the american people. [cheering and applause] as i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of iowa have sent a profound message to the political

establishment, to the economic establishment and, by the way, to the media establishment. [cheering and applause] [chanting] the enormous given crises facing our country, it is just too late for establishment politics and establishment economics. what the american people have , i heard by the way this not just from progressives, i hear it from conservatives and moderates, and that is we can no longer continue to have a system.campaign finance [cheering and applause]

i am the former chairman of the senate veterans committee and in that capacity, not only have i ever worked hard to try and had the-- i have privilege of meeting so many men and women who put their lives online to defend our way of life. what they were protecting is an american democracy of one person, one vote, not billionaires buying elections. [cheering and applause] i am overwhelmed. i am moved by the fact that millions of people throughout this country have helped , thateer in our campaign

we have received in this campaign 3.5 million individual constitutions -- individual contributions. people who went to bernie sanders.com. you know what the average conservation was? $27. [cheering and applause] we do not represent the interests of the billionaire class, wall street or corporate america. we don't want their money. i am very proud to tell you we are the only candidate on the democratic side without a super pac. [cheering and applause]

the reason we have done so well here in iowa. the reason i believe we are good to do so well in new hampshire and other states that follow, the reason is the american people are saying no to a rigged economy. [cheering and applause] they no longer want to see an economy in which the average american works longer hours for newr wages while almost all income and wealth is going to the top 1%. [cheering and applause] peoplee american understand is this country was based on fairness. top .1%t fair when the today owns almost as much wealth

as the bottom 90%. the 20ot fair when wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than the bottom half of america. [cheering] you guys ready for a radical idea that? [cheering] so is america. that idea is we are going to create an economy that works for working families, not just the billionaire class. [cheering] [applause] yes, when millions of our people are working for starvation wages, we are going to wage -- we are good to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

-- we are going to raise the minimum wage to $50 an hour. we are going to have to pay equity for women. [cheering and applause] over thisn all beautiful state of iowa. .e have spoken to 70,000 people meeting after meeting, and hear people say bernie, i went to college. i graduated college. now i am 60, 80, $90,000 in debt. that is crazy. people should not be punished by -- punished financially because they want to get a decent education. [cheering and applause] believe in the , public colleges and

universities should be tuition free. [cheering and applause] then my critics say that is a great idea. how are you going to pay for it echo i will tell you how we are to pay for it. we are going to impose a tax on wall street. [cheering and applause] the greed, the recklessness and the illegal behavior of the wall street drove this economy to its knees. the american people bailed out wall street, now it is wall street's time to help the middle class. [cheering and applause]

when we talk about transforming america, we will end the disgrace of having more people in jail than any other country. [cheering] disproportionately african-american and latino. [cheering] what we are going to do is provide jobs and education for our kids, not more jail and incarceration. [cheering and applause] i will tell you something that really does astound me. among the senate energy committee, i have talked to scientists all over the world. the debate is over climate change is real -- the debate is over. climate change is real. [cheering and applause] we have a moral responsibility to work with countries

throughout the world to transform our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. [cheering and applause] me is we have not one republican candidate for president prepared to come up and tell us and agree with virtually all scientists agree with. you know why they are not prepared to do that? they doon the day acknowledge the climate change, there were to lose their campaign funds from the koch brothers and the fossil fuel industry. i say to the republicans, stop

worrying about your campaign funds from big oil or the koch brothers or the coal industry. worry about your planet you are going to be leaving your children and grandchildren. [cheering and applause] now, i have been criticized during this campaign for many things. [laughter] day. single that is ok. [crowd noise] but let me repeat what i believe. i believe that at a time when every major country on earth guarantees health care to all people as a right, i believe we

should do the same in the united states of america. [cheering and applause] so for all of my critics out there in the wall street journal and the washington post and in corporate america, wherever you may be, let me tell you straight up, yes, i believe that health care is a right, not a privilege. [cheering and applause] that is why i believe in a medicare for all single-payer programs. which will not only guarantee health care -- it will not only in the pharmaceutical ripoff of the american people, but it will save the middle class family thousands of dollars a year in health care costs. [cheering and applause]

let me conclude by saying what no other candidate for president will tell you. that is that no president, not bernie sanders or anyone else will be able to bring about the changes that the working family and the middle class of this country, that our children, that the seniors deserve. no wonder president can do it, because the powers that be, wall street, with their endless supply of money, corporate america, the large campaign donors, are so powerful that no president can do what has to be done alone. what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. [cheering and applause]

a political revolution that says when millions of people come together, including those who have given up on the political process. they are so dismayed and so frustrated with what goes on in washington, with young people who before had never been involved in the political process. when young people and working people and seniors begin to stand up and say loudly and clearly, enough is enough. [cheering] that our government, the government of our great country belongs to all of us, and not just a handful of billionaires. when that happens, we will transform this country. thank you all very much. [cheering]

♪ >> if you're interested in the process, it all has to begin in iowa and new hampshire. we don't set the rules in terms of which state's first or second we had to cover the candidates where they are. there are a lot of people interested in this election. every four years, the american people make a decision to say who should be the leader of the free world. for those who want to follow the process and do it anyway that is completely unfiltered, we are the only place that does that.

the other thing to keep in mind is as you look this campaign and you look at these candidates, you are able to see how they are able to try and close the deal. during the final days of any campaign, there is a lot of attention on every nuance, every new story, every speech, every ad. how is one candidate try to rebut the other. in this day and age of social media and twitter. we are the one place that can allow you to step back and watch it. you can get the analysis on other networks. you can hear fewer calls and way in on the programming. we are the one place that allows you to see it as it happens and make up your own decision. >> senator rand paul finished fifth and i was republican caucuses with 5% of the total vote. the candidate spoke briefly to supporters in the morning.

-- supporters in the morning. paul: liberty is alive and well in iowa. [cheering and applause] since we are thinking people, i want to thank my wife for letting me do this for the last few years. [cheering and applause] i want to thank my brothers and sisters and nephews and nieces for all coming up to speak. [cheering and applause] and most of all, i want to thank you guys. everyone of you for making this -- making those phone calls, because you believe in a government so small, you can barely see it. [cheering and applause] liberty they say requires

eternal vigilance. to have eternal vigilance, and requires a new generation. every generation has to renew that vigilance of liberty. there will always be people who want the easy way out. there will always be people who say give me power and i will take care of you. give me your liberty and i will take care of you. it is the remnant, it is the few . it is those who will stand up and say we are not standing up desk we will not trade our liberty, -- we will not trade our liberty, not now, not ever. [cheering and applause] against all odds. against all -- against a little bit of bias here and there.

[cheering and applause] the two hugo wrote that ideas are stronger than armies. i think the idea of liberty .ives on in you and us we will continue to fight. tonight is the beginning. liberty will live on. we fight on. thank you for all of your support. governor o'malley: look. i cannot -- words cannot express how grateful i am to all of you, my true friends, who have helped me in waging this courageous battle. when i got into this eight months ago, i had no doubt that it would be anything but a tough fight. it is a tough fight. i have always been drawn to a tough fight. i felt when i got into this, as i looked down the road, i felt very firmly that our country was scanning the horizon looking for new possibilities and new leadership. a way to heal our divisions and move us forward. you guys have been with me every step of the way. i cannot thank you enough. i have come to love iowa. [cheering] ,he beauty of your landscape the warmth of your people.

[laughter] iowa has been like a second home for me this past year, from college campuses to family farms. i have had the privilege of getting to know i wince whose passion -- getting to know iowans whose passion is well renowned. i would share with you one brief story, i was in burlington, iowa . i collected some in stores across your state. from decent, caring, compassionate men and women who love our country. i will never forget one of these . in fact, i told a reporter earlier today it is the story i will always carry with me. i met a woman whose son has done -- she said of governor, when all of the candidates are on stage together, i want you to please tell the other candidates not to

as a pair ofon boots on the ground. my son is an american soldier and he is my son. i was so proud to be able to honor that request of hers. in essence, that is what these iowa caucuses are all about. it is about each person's voice being heard. it is about each person story being heard. i decidedthe kids and it would be an extreme poverty indeed if the democratic party only had two candidates to choose from. [cheering and applause] .o we made this fight i cannot thank you enough for giving me an opportunity to be a part of writing the story of our country's future.

i want to thank everyone who came out to our events and went to meet your ear. everyone who went out to caucus for me tonight. [cheering and applause] i want to give you my deepest gratitude. i was getting tweets from people in caucus locations. god bless dennis and i the way. [cheering and applause] we were getting calls from other people, tweets saying we are here. they are yelling at us but tell the governor we are holding strong. [cheering] [crowd noise] my parents taught the six of us that the only -- politics is a noble service to others here at the only thing wrong with it is not enough good people bother to try. each of us has the power and

responsibility to hold strong and point our country to a better future. our economy is not money, it is people. no one who works hard for a living should ever have to raise their children in poverty. it is their cause that we made our cause. it was a part of this tough fight. we have to hold strong for that fight. we have to continue that fight to make the minimum wage a living wage. so that every family that works hard can get ahead. to pay overtime pay for overtime work and equal pay for men and women. to move our country forward. + [cheering and applause] we have to hold strong to the values and the principles that unite us. we have to be unafraid to face challenges. we have to be able to look at climate change and see that it is the greatest business opportunity to come to the united states in 100 years.

i was honored to be the first candidate to put forward a plan to move us to 100% clean 2050 andenergy by create 5 million jobs along the way. [cheering and applause] we are a great nation. we are a good. we are a compassionate and generous people and we have to hold on values that make us america's best make us americans. this too was what this fight was about it we need conference of immigration reform. -- i met with so many people across our country. i met with the family -- the ramirez family in texas. two parents undocumented. by daughters covered president obama's executive

action. there are 13 euro girl, abigail, born in the usa, americans -- their 13-year-old girl, abigail, born in the usa, american. home thehat which goes doors of her home will be kicked open and her parents will be deported. we are better people than that. we need to host on to the truth that the enduring symbol of the united states of america is not the barb wire fence, it is the statue of liberty. [cheering and applause] two of the most incredible people i met on the course of this campaign were sandy and lonnie phillips. they lost their daughter in that theater shooting in our, texas. and aurora, texas. they used this campaign. we transformed the grief of all

of those who lost loved ones to guns and gun violence. it was because of our campaign that we drove this issue. it is because of this campaign that we will restore commonsense gun legislation. [cheering and applause] look, this cause continues. this fight continues. proud ofver been more the people that have been associated with this campaign. i have never worked with a better group of young americans and patriotic men and women than the ones i have worked with. i want to say this. no man ever had a stronger, more courageous family and tough fight than i have. [cheering and applause] , thank you for standing by me every step of the way.

thank you for being the love of my life, my sword and my shield. without you, we would never would have been able to help with as many people as we had. tara, jack and william. [cheering] this fight continues. ink, we fought very hard order to give the people a choice. the people have made their choice tonight. it was hard to get over the threshold. i know that those numbers do not reflect all of the hard work that you did. we have driven this debate. tonight, i have to tell you that i am suspending this presidential bid, but i am not ending this fight. the fight that you and i are engaged in is a tough fight. i believe the toughness of the fight is the way the hidden god has a telling us we are fighting for something worth saving. the american dream is worth saving. this planet is worth saving. as a march 4 to the fog, let us all -- as we march forward to

continue tot us point our country forward. we must hold strong for that third grade kid who is only going to be in third grade wants. we must hold strong for that senior citizen who has worked her whole life and now find yourself having to choose between her food and medicine. let us hold strong for that mom and dad who are working three jobs between them, in order to make ends meet and sweating over cutting up the bills after the kids are in bed. we are a great country. we are a good people because of our generosity, because of our compassion, because of the believe we share and the dignity. our own responsibility to advance the common good. our understanding that we are all in this together, all of us, , american muslims, gay and lesbian, transgender americans. all americans.

contributions poured in to tedcruz.org as courageous conservatives said, "yes, we can!" 800,000 contributions at tedcruz.org with an average contribution of $67. that is the power of the grassroots! [applause] it is more than that. it is 12,000 volunteers here in the state of iowa. [applause] over 200,000 volunteers all across this great nation. [applause] know, during the course of

this campaign people have asked heidi and me, are you tired? is 16-18l admit, it hours a day and seven o days a week. we are not tired at all. [applause] to the contrary, we are inspired by each and every one of you. [applause] bed every morning, that at a time when our country is in crisis, every one of us has a chance to stand up and lead. inspired by the stories i

see every day. working men like jerry done leave the from columbus -- like jerry dunleavy from columbus, ohio, who requested entire month off his job to come to iowa and cruz andave at camp volunteer full-time. [applause] refused toployer give him the time off, jerry quit his job and came anyway. [applause] >> i love you ted cruz! senator cruz: and i love the great state of iowa.

i am inspired by people like elliott and josh, students at the university of chicago who spends their winter break at camp cruz. but they did not stop there. they came back this weekend. they hit the phones and pavement so students across this country, rather than having mountains of debt, will instead, have two, three, four, five high-paying job offers and a chance for the american dream. [applause] people liked by alexandra, a 13-year-old girl day, at ourwho yester campaign headquarters, made 823 volunteer calls. [applause]

that has always been the strength of this campaign. by the men and women gathered here, standing up and speaking us out, lifting this country up in prayer each and every day. and let me say, our leadership team. our iowa state chairman matt scholz, what an extraordinary job. [applause] have done organizing a grassroots army and let me say to the iowa state director, brian english, what you amazing job brian has done. [applause] cochairmannational

and steve king. [applause] these men have become dear and trusted friends. they are warriors, they are men of principle. they stand and speak the truth. they stand and defend their values and let me tell you, these leaders, day after day and week after week, have been crawling across broken glass with knives tween their teeth. [applause] i am grateful for the support, the early support, of my friends. we are grateful for the over 150 pastors across the state of iowa who joined our team to energize

people of faith. are grateful to the state senators, to the state representatives, to the volunteer leaders in each of the 99 counties who stood up and said, we will be heard and this will be decided at the grassroots. [applause] and then, i am so grateful to national leaders, people like dr. dobson. and tony perkins. [applause] and phil robertson. [applause] and governor rick perry. [applause] beck.enn [applause]

leaders who have stood and led, bringing together a coalescing conservative here in iowa and all across the country. do you want to know what scares the washington cartel? actually, not remotely. i don't scare them in the tiniest bit. what scares them is you. [applause] what scares them is that the old reagan coalition is coming back together, of conservatives. [applause] we are saying conservatives and evangelicals and libertarians and reagan democrats all coming

together as one, and that terrifies washington, d.c. [applause] and so to the people of iowa. heidi and i say thank you to your incredible hospitality. thank you for your love. thank you for welcoming us into your homes, into your living room. thank you for welcoming my father to preach from the pulpits of your churches. [applause] and let me say to my parents, mom, thank you. thank you for the incredible, unconditional love is that you have given me every day of my life. the knowledge that whatever i might do, whenever i might say, that my mother loves me. to my cousin beebee, who is like a sister to me, we grew up together. i love you. [applause] and to my dad. [applause] a man who came from cuba at age 18 with nothing, with $100 in his underwear. he doesn't carry money in his underwear anymore. [laughter] imprisoned, who

was tortured, who washed dishes making $.50 an hour, who has lived the american dream, and a man who is today a pastor, traveling the country, preaching the gospel. [applause] >> this is the american dream now, coming to fruition. senator cruz: my dad is 76 years old and yet, he has the energy of a teenager. you have been my hero my whole life. i love you, dad. [applause] when the sun rises tomorrow, this campaign will take the next step. we will continue to campaign the same way, sitting down person to

person, leader to leader, vfw hall to dunkin' donuts, returning to the great state of new hampshire. [applause] and let me speak for a minute to the men and women of the state of new hampshire. 36 years ago, you welcomed to the granite state a candidate running for president who was also deeply disliked by the washington establishment and the washington cartel, a candidate who had been dismissed outright by the media. some polls had him 15-20 points behind. but you refused to let the establishment and the cartel and the media to do your thinking for you. you refused to let him to tell them tell you how to vote.

accept a position because of the latest media polls. instead, because of a conservative philosophy that grounded him so that he knew exactly what he believed, exactly what the principles were that built this great nation. [applause] and so, tonight, i want to say to the people of new hampshire, thank you for what you did 36 years ago. thank you for giving america, and the world, and history itself, our 40th president of the united states, ronald wilson reagan. [applause] and i asked the people of new hampshire and the people of south carolina and the people of nevada and the people of the ,uper tuesday states on march 1

to each of you. do not listen to our words. do not listen to the rhetoric of our campaigns, but hold each and every one of us accountable. hold me accountable and every other candidate accountable to be a consistent conservative. [applause] if you want a candidate to repeal obamacare, that support a candidate who has led the fight to repeal obamacare. [applause] if you want a president to stop amnesty, to secure the borders, and to keep us safe, that support a candidate who has led the fight to stop amnesty, to secure the borders, and to keep us safe. [applause] if you want a candidate to

support life and marriage and religious liberty, that support a candidate who has spent decades of his life fighting to defend life and marriage and religious liberty. if you want a candidate to defend the second amendment right to keep and bear arms, then ask of every candidate, where were you in the spring of 2013 when barack obama and harry reid and chuck schumer tried to undermine the second amendment right to keep and bear arms. if you want a candidate who will stand unapologetically with the nation of israel. [applause]

then support a candidate who has led the fight over and over again to stand by our friend and ally, the nation of israel. [applause] and if you want a commander-in-chief who will fulfill the most solemn obligation of the president to keep this nation safe, then support a candidate who has demonstrated the commitment, the judgment, the experience, the clarity of vision to identify our enemy, to call it by its name -- radical islamic terrorism. [applause] and to utterly and completely defeat isis.

[applause] if i am elected president, every militant on the face of the planet will know, if you go and join isis, if you wage jihad on the united states of america, if you attempt to murder innocent americans, you are signing your death warrant. [applause] and i will tell you this. if the states across the country follow the lead of iowa and support this campaign, then i tell you this, this july in cleveland, you will hear these words spoken from the podium of the unified republican convention. tonight, i want to say to every member of the democratic party

who believes in limited government and the united states constitution and a safe and secure america, come home. [applause] democrats, your party has left you. republican party wants you. we welcome you back. [applause] gether this year, thi republicans and the reagan democrats can send an unmistakable message. the message of a reagan-like landslide that will once and for all drive be liberal elites and the washington cartel into the potomac and out to see. -- and out to sea, never to be

seen again. [applause] together we can bring out a new era of economic growth, of military strength, of international security and the future of hope that our children deserve. if we commit to do more than hope, if we aspire to govern by a higher standard, a standard that transcends political party and race and gender and income, and to everyone that is tired of a president who divides us daily on racial lines, ethnic lines, gender lines, on socioeconomic lines, we will have a president who once again seeks to bring us together and unite us on our shared values of who we are as americans. the most solemn responsibility of the president is to keep this country safe. we will stop the weakness and appeasement. we will stop making excuses for global bullies and terrorists and rather, simply do what it takes to defeat them. [applause] i give you my solemn promise. we will finally, finally, finally secure the borders and end sanctuary cities. [applause] i want to speak for a moment to the soldiers, and sailors, and airmen, and marines. i want to speak to the moms and dads let a child serving overseas, i want to speak to the

husbands and wives who wake up at night wondering if their loved ones are still alive, i want to speak to the little kids who have been waiting months and months to get a hug from daddy, a kiss from mommy. to all of our fighting men and women who have been sent into combat with their arms tied behind their backs with rules of i engagement that are wrong, that are immoral, that will end in january 2017. [applause] you will have a commander-in-chief who finally has your back. [applause] and to the police officers and the firemen and the first responders, the heroes who rushed into burning buildings instead of out of burning buildings, the last seven years of having a president, having an

attorney general that demonizes you, that vilifies you, that sides with of the criminals and looters, rather than the brave men and women of law enforcement, that will end in january 2017. [applause] so tonight, the state of iowa, the democrats here seem to be at a virtual tie between one candidate who admits he is a socialist -- [laughter] and the other-- candidate who pretends she is not. i wish them both luck. but i will tell you this. as margaret thatcher observed, the problem with socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money. [applause]

let me tell you, tonight, i cannot wait to stand on that debate stage with hillary clinton. [applause] we will win by speaking the truth with a smile. the truth is, the american people are fed up with washington, with the corrupt class that enriches itself and leaves behind the working men and women of this country. the truth is, the american people are fed up with a federal government that views the bill of rights and the constitution as a rough draft and an inconvenience and something to be set aside, and we are ready to get back to the vision of the

framers of protecting the inalienable rights that are given to us by our creator. [applause] you know, the reason all of you are here is the same reason i am here. the same reason heidi and i have spent every waking moment for the last year. we love our kids. our girls, caroline and catherine, at age 7 and age 5, everyone of us here, when we go to bed at night, we think, what kind of world are relieving our kids? leaving our we kids? are we giving our children a brighter future? are we giving our children what our parents gave us, a country with greater freedom, greater opportunity, more promise, more hope? you want to know why i am

getting on a plane in about an hour and flying all night to new hampshire to knock on doors and sit down and visit with people and ask for their support. the reason is simple. because when i look my girls in the eyes 10 or 20 years from now, i am not going to tell them , we could have stood up and saved this country, but we did not do everything we could. instead, i am going to tell them that millions of americans saw that america was in jeopardy, and we rose up together and said that we are going to preserve this nation for our children and grandchildren. [applause] to those who supported other candidates in this race. the republican party is so blessed to have a bounty of talented, young, dynamic candidates, people who are friends, people i like and respect. to those who supported other

candidates, i will tell each of them, we welcome you as part of our team. [applause] because if we stand together as one, if the american people stand together and say, "we want our country back," there is no washington that can stand against the american people, that can stand against the grassroots, that can stand against our unity. we are going to do this together as a movement from the people. and i tell you tonight, iowa has made clear to america and the world, morning is coming. morning is coming.

endorsement or right political connections we had no chance. they told me we had no chance because my hair wasn't great enough and my boots were too high. [applause] they told me i needed to wait my turn, that i needed to wait in line. [applause] tonight here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to clean up this mess. [applause] time for waiting. for everything that makes this nation great now hangs in the balance. this is a time where we need a president that will truly preserve and protect and defend the constitution of the united states, not one that undermines,

attacks, and ignores the constitution of the united states. [applause] this is a time for a president who will defend our second amendment rights. no ap a president who undermines them. this is a time for a president who will rebuild the u.s. military. the world is a safer and better place when the united states has the strongest military in the world. [applause] this is no ordinary election. 2016 is not just a choice between political parties. 2016 is a referendum, a referendum on our identity as a nation and as a people. and in america there are only two ways forward. you can either be greater than we have ever been, or we can be a great nation and decline. bernie sanders or hillary clinton, will they get elected?

[booing] if they win, obamacare becomes permanent win, these unconstitutional executive orders from this president become permanent. if they win, our military continues to decline. the balance of our supreme court will be controlled by liberal justices for a decade or longer. they cannot win. hillary clinton is disqualified from being the president of the united states. [applause] she stored classified and sensitive information on her e-mail server because she thinks she is above the law. hillary clinton can never be commander-in-chief because anyone who lies to the families of people who have lost their lives in service to this country can never be commander in chief of this country. [applause] we will unify this party and we will unify the conservative movement. [applause] when i am our nominee, we will grow the conservative movement. we will take our message to the people, who are struggling paycheck to paycheck, to the students living under the burden of student loans, to the families struggling to raise their children with the right values, we will take our message to them and bring them to our side.

country and of the state of arkansas. he has announced he is suspending his campaign. we think governor huckabee for all he has done. [applause] ago anturies extraordinary generation living in one place at one time. time here in one america declared their independence from the most powerful country in the world. our rights come from our creator, not from our government. the rest is a two century history of the most extraordinary nation in the history of mankind. i know america is special week as i was raised by people who knew what life was like outside of america. i was raised by people who came to this country with nothing. they barely spoke english at the time. my father stopped going to school when he was nine years old.

he had to go work. he would never go back to school and work for the rest of his life. when my parents arrived here in this country they struggled, they were discouraged. they persevered. less than a decade after they arrived here with nothing, my father owned a home. not a mansion, but a safe and stable home in a safe and stable never heard. decades later they were able to ti retire with dignity. they left all four of their children with a life better than their own. this is the purpose of my parents' life, to give their kids the chance to do what they never could. that is not just my story. that is our story. that is america's story. that is the story of your parents. your parents who sacrificed and gave up so much so you could be

what they could not. it is the stories of those parents today doing the same for their children. it is this that makes america special. it is this that we fight to preserve. this is the kind of country and want to leave for my children. this is the kind of country your children deserve to inherit as well. and this is what we must now decide. whether we will remain that kind of country, or whether we will be the first generation to lose it. and itn important choice is one that each generation before us had to make. america is not a special country by accident. america is a great nation because each generation before us did their part. each generation before us sacrificed, they confronted their challenges, they embraced their opportunities, and each generation has left it off better than they had it.

arrived forent has this generation of americans to rise up to the calling of our heritage. the time has come for us to take our place and do what we must and when i am elected president of these great united states, we will do our part. are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie. [applause] and while -- >> bernie! >> bernie! bernie! bernie sanders: and while the results are still not complete, it looks like we will have half of the iowa delegates. [applause]

i want to take this opportunity to congratulate secretary clinton. yep. [applause] her organization for waging a very vigorous campaign. and i want to think governor o'malley. [applause] it is never easy to lose. i have lost more than one campaign. but he should know he contributed a whole lot to the dialogue, that he ran an issue oriented campaign, and that he won the respect of the american people. [applause] i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of

iowa have sent a very profound message to the political, establishment, to the economic establishment, and by the way, to the media establishment. [applause] bernie sanders: and that is, given the enormous crises facing our country, it is just too late for establishment politics and establishment economics. [applause] the american people have said, and by the way, i hear this not just from progressives, but from conservatives and that is, we can no longer continue to

have a corrupt campaign finance system -- [applause] the former chairman of the senate veterans committee and i have worked hard to protect the interests of veterans. i have had the privilege of meeting so many men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our way of life. what they are protecting is an american democracy of one person k, one vote. not billionaires buying elections. [applause] i am overwhelmed and i am moved by the fact that millions of people throughout this country

have helped volunteer in our campaign. we have received in this 3.5 million individual contributions. [applause] people who went to berniesanders.com and do you know what the average contribution was? it was $57! [applause] we do not represent the interests of the billionaire class, wall street, or corporate america. we don't want their money. youi am very proud to tell we are the only candidate on the democratic side without a super pac. [applause]

and the reason we have done so reason i in iowa, the believe we will do so well in new hampshire, and the other states that follow, the reason is the american people are rigged"no" to a economy. [applause] they no longer want to see an economy in which the average american works longer hours for lower wages, while almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%. [applause] what the american people understand is this country was based and is based on fairness, on fairness. 1/10 oft fair when the

1% owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%. when the 20ir wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than the bottom half of america. [applause] ready for a radical idea? [applause] america!is and that radical idea is, we are going to create an economy that works for working families, not just the billionaire class. [applause] and yet, when millions of our

people are working for starvation wages, we could raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. [applause] ng to havee are goign to pay equity for women. [applause] been all over this beautiful state of iowa. some 70,000en to people and after the meetings, i hear people standing up and they i graduated college. $60,000-$90,000 in debt. that is crazy. people should not be punished financially because they want to get a decent education. [applause]

and that is why i believe that in the year 2016, public colleges and universities should be tuition free. [applause] then, my critics say, that is a great idea? how will you pay for it? i will tell you. we are going to impose a tax on wall street circulation. [applause] the greed, recklessness, and the illegal behavior of wall street drove the economy to its knees. bailed outn people wall street. time tois wall street's

help the middle class. [applause] and when we talk about transforming america, we will en d the disgrace of having more people in jail than any other country. [applause] , africantionately american and latinos. [applause] do ise are going to provide jobs and education for our kids. not more jail and incarceration. [applause] and i sen. sanders: and i will tell you something that astounds me. i am on the senate environmental committee. i have talked to scientists all over the world. the debate is over. climate change is real. [applause]

and we have a mortal responsibility to work with countries throughout the world to transform our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. [applause] sen. sanders: and what totally amazes me is that we have not one republican candidate for president prepared to come up and tell us and agree with what most scientists agree with. and you know why they are not prepared to do that? doause on the day that they acknowledge the reality of climate change, and call for change, they will lose their campaign funds from the koch brothers and the fossil fuel industry. [applause]

sen. sanders: so i say to the republicans, stop worrying about your campaign funds from big oil or the koch brothers where the coal industry. worry about the planet you will be leaving your children and your grandchildren. [applause] sen. sanders: i have been criticized during this campaign for many, many things. [laughter] sen. sanders: every single day -- that's ok, that's ok. [applause] repeatnders: but let me what i believe. i believe that at a time when every major country on earth

guarantees health care to all people at the right, i believe that we should do the same in the united states of america. [applause] sen. sanders: so for all of my critics out there at "the wall street journal" and "the washington post" and corporate america, let me tell you straight up. yes, i believe that health care is a right, not a privilege. [applause] sen. sanders: that is why i believe in a medicare for all single pay her program which will not only guarantee health care for all, not only and the pharmaceutical ripoff of the american people -- [applause] willsanders: -- but it

save the average middle-class family thousands of dollars per year in health care costs. [applause] sen. sanders: let me conclude by saying what no other candidate for president will tell you, and that is that no president, not bernie sanders, not anybody else, will be able to bring about the changes that the working families and the middle class of this family, that our children, that our seniors, deserve. no one president can do it, because the powers that be -- wall street with their endless supply of money, corporate america, the large campaign donors -- are so powerful that what has to can do

be done alone. that is why what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. [applause] sen. sanders: a political revolution that says, when millions of people come together, including those who have given up on the political smayed,, that are so this maddi young people who have never been involved in the political process, working people, seniors, begin to stand up, and say loudly and clearly, "enough is enough" -- [applause] sen. sanders: -- that our government, the government of our great country, belongs to all of us, and not just a handful of billionaires. when that happens, we will transform this country. thank you all very much.

[applause] ♪ >> if you're interested in the process, you have to begin in iowa and new hampshire. we don't set the rules in terms of which state's first or second. we certainly have to cover the candidates where they are. there are a lot of people interested in the selection. every four years, the american people make a decision to say who should be the leader of the free world. who should be our president. for those who want to follow the

process and do it in a way that is completely unfiltered. the other thing to keep in mind is that as you look at this campaign in these candidates, you are able to see how they are able to try and close the deal. during the final days of any campaign, there is a lot of attention on every nuance, every speech, every ad, how is one candidate trying to rebut the other. in this day and age of social media and twitter, the new cycle is constant. we are the one place that can allow you to step back and watch it. you can get the analysis on other networks. you can certainly hear fewer that we areigh in, the one place that just allows you to see it as it happens and make your own decision. >> senator rand paul finished fifth and i was republican

caucuses with about 5% of the total vote. the candidate spoke briefly to supporters in des moines. [applause] sen. paul: thank you. liberty is alive and well in iowa. announce he is dropping out of the presidential race. he made the announcement from his campaign headquarters in des moines. this is 10 minutes. [applause] gov. o'malley: thank you. words cannot express how grateful i am to all of you, my friends, who have helped me in waging this courageous battle. when i got into this eight months ago, i had no doubt that it would be anything but a tough fight, and it is a tough fight. but i have always been drawn to a tough fight. and i felt when i got into this, as i looked down the road, i felt very firmly that our country was scanning the horizon, looking for new possibilities and new leadership, and a way to heal our divisions and move us forward. you guys have been with me every step of the way and i cannot thank you enough.

i have come to love iowa -- [applause] the beauty of -- your landscape, the warmth of your people. iowa has been like a second home this year, from college campuses to family farms, i have had the privilege of getting to know owans, whose passion for our democracy is well-known and renowned. i want to share with you one brief story. iwas in burlington, iowa, and collected so many stories across your state, from decent, caring, compassionate men and women who love our country. but i will never forget one of these. i told the reporter earlier today, the story i will always carry with me. in clearly 10, i met a woman -- in burlington, i met a woman whose son served tours in iraq.

she knew there was an upcoming democratic debate and she said, governor, when all of you candidates are on stage together, i want you to please tell the other candidates not to a pair ofy son as "boots on the ground." she said, "my son is an american soldier, and he is my son." and i was so proud to be able to honor that request of hers. and in essence, that is what these iowa caucuses are all about. it is about each person's voice being heard, each person'story bein story being heard. katie and the kids and i decided it would be an extreme poverty democratic party only had two candidates to choose from. [applause] gov. o'malley: and so we made this fight.

and i cannot thank you enough for giving me an opportunity to be a part of writing this story of our country's future. i want to thank everyone that came out to our events, everyone who went up to caucus for me tonight -- [applause] gov. o'malley: and i want to give you my deepest gratitude. i was getting tweets from people in caucus locations. god bless denison, by the way. si, se puede. [applause] gov. o'malley: we were getting calls and tweets, "we're here, there yelling at us, but tell the governor we are holding strong." politics is a noble service to others, and that the only thing wrong with it is that not enough good people bother to try. each of us has the power and the responsibility to hold strong and point our country to a better future. our economy isn't money, it's people. it's all of our people. no one who works hard for a living should have to raise their children in poverty. it was their cause that we made our cause, and is part of this tough fight. we have to hold strong for that fight. we have to continue to fight, to make the minimum wage a living wage, so that every family can work hard and get ahead, to pay overtime pay for overtime work and equal pay for men and women. [applause] and we also have to hold strong to the values and the principles that unite us. we have be unafraid to face our challenges, right?

we have to look at climate change and see it is the greatest business opportunity to come to the united states of america in 100 years. [applause] gov. o'malley: and i was honored to be the first candidate to put forward a plan to move us to 100% clean, electric energy grid by 2050 and create 5 million jobs along the way. [applause] gov. o'malley: we are a great nation, and we are a good and compassionate and generous people. we have to hold strong to the values that make us americans. that, too, is what this tough fight was about. our diversity is our strength, and we need comprehensive immigration reform to lift in 11 million of our neighbors out of the shadows and into the full light of the american economy. i met with so many people across the country. i met with the ramirez family in texas, and two parents,

undocumented, two adopted daughters covered by president obama's executive action, and their 13-year-old girl abigail, born in the usa, an american citizen. this little girl goes to school every single day, wondering and fearing all day, that when she goes home, the doors of her home will be kicked open and her parents will be deported. we are a better people than that. and we need to continue to hold strong to the truth that the enduring symbol of the united states of america is not the barbed wire fence, it is the statue of liberty. [applause] and two of the most incredible people i met in the course of this campaign were sandy and lonnie phillips, who lost their daughter, jessie, in

that shooting in aurora, texas. they used this campaign to transform their grief, and you know what? we also helped transform the grief of all of those who have lost loved ones to guns and gun violence. it was because of our campaign that we drove this issue, and it is because of this campaign that we will restore commonsense gun safety legislation in united states of america. [applause] and so, look, this cause continues. this type of fight continues. i have never been more proud of the people that have been associated with this campaign. i have never worked with a better group of young americans and patriotic men and women than the ones i worked with on this campaign, and i also want to say this. no man ever had a stronger, more courageous family in a tough fight and i have had --

[applause] gov. o'malley: in katie o'malley. thank you for standing by me every step of the way, and thank you for being the love of my life, my sword and my shield. that, i would've never been able to help as many people as i have. grace, tara, jack, william. [applause] i think one of the proudest moments of this campaign is when i tuned into william, veryw clearly and without any anger, call out the racist and fascist rhetoric of donald trump. [applause] and say very: firmly that he is looking forward to the fall, because his father is going to hit donald trump like a freight train.

[applause] gov. o'malley: this fight continues. but look, we fought very, very hard in order to give the people a choice, and that people have made their choice tonight. it was hard to get over the threshold, and i know the numbers don't reflect all the hard work that you did, but we have driven this debate, and so tonight, i have to tell you that i am suspending this presidential bid. but i am not ending this fight. the fight that you and i are engaged in is a tough fight, and i believe that the toughness of the fight is the way god has for telling us we are fighting for something worth saving. our country is worth saving, the american dream is worth saving,

lobbyists settled on other candidates in this race, when the media in one voice said a conservative cannot win, nationwide, over 800,000 contributions poured in to tedcruz.org as courageous conservatives said yes, we can. [applause] bed cruz: i leapt out of every morning, amazed that at a time when our country is in crisis, every one of us has the

opportunity to stand and lead, that we have been put in the place of leadership for such a time as this. inspired by the stories of heroism that i see every day. working men, like jerry dudley the from columbus, ohio. unleavy fromnell columbus, ohio, who requested an entire month off his job to volunteer full-time. [applause] sen. cruz: when his employer refused to give him the time off, jerry quit his job and came anyway. [applause]

sen. cruz: and i love the great state of iowa. [laughter] [applause] sen. cruz: i am inspired by people like elliott geiser and josh hammer, students at the university of chicago, who spent their winter break at camp cruz. but they didn't stop there. they came back this weekend and hit the phones and pavement, campaigning so that students across this country, upon graduation, rather than having mountains of debt, will instead offersve high-paying job and a chance at the american dream. [applause] sen. cruz: i am inspired by people like alexander ziegler, a 13-year-old girl from lubbock, texas, who yesterday, at our

campaign headquarters, may 823 volunteer calls. [applause] sen. cruz: that has always been the strength of this campaign. than that and women gathered courageous conservatives standing up and speaking out and lifting us up in prayer, lifting this country up in prayer, each and every day. and let me say, our leaders are shifting. our iowa state chairman, what an extraordinary job. [applause] you have done organizing a grassroots army, and let me say to our iowa state director, what an amazing job brian has done. [applause]

sen. cruz: and to our national cochairmen -- [applause] sen. cruz: -- these men have become dear and trusted friends. they are warriors. they are men of principle. they stand and speak the truth. they stand and defend their values, and let me tell you, these leaders, day after day, week after week, has been crawling under broken glass with knives between their teeth. i'm grateful for the support, the early support, of my friend, steve days. sen. cruz: we are grateful for the 150 pastors across iowa who joined our team to energize people of faith. [applause] we are grateful to the state senators, the state representatives, the volunteer leaders in each of the 99 counties, who stood up and said "we will be heard and this will be decided by the grassroots." [booing] sen. cruz: actually, not remotely. i don't scare them the tiniest bit. what scares them is you. [applause] sen. cruz: what scares them is that the old reagan coalition is coming back together, of conservatives. [applause]

sen. cruz: we're seeing conservatives and evangelicals and libertarians and reagan democrats, all coming together as one, and that terrifies washington, d.c. [applause] and so do the people of iowa. heidi and i say thank you for your incredible hospitality. thank you for your love. thank you for welcoming us into your homes, into your living rooms. thank you for welcoming my father to preach from the pulpits of your churches. [applause] sen. cruz: and let me say to my you for the, thank lovedible, unconditional

that you have given me every day of my life, the knowledge that whatever i might do, whatever i might say, that my mother loves me. [applause] sen. cruz: to my cousin, bibi, who is like a sister to me -- we grew up together -- i love you, bibs. [applause] my dad -- and too m [applause] a then who came from cuba at age 18 with nothing, with $100 in his underwear.

he doesn't carry money in his underwear anymore. [laughter] sen. cruz: a man who was imprisoned, who was tortured, who washed dishes making $.50 per hour, who has lived the american dream, and a man who was today a pastor, traveling the country, preaching the gospel. [applause] sen. cruz: my dad is 76 years old, and yet he has the energy of a teenager, and dad, you have in my hero my whole life. i love you. [applause] sen. cruz: when the sun rises tomorrow, this campaign will take the next step.

continue to campaign the same way, sitting down person-to-person, leader to leader, bfw halted dunkin' donuts, returning to the great state of new hampshire. [applause] and let me speak for a minute to the men and women of the state of new hampshire. 36 years ago, you welcomed to the granite state a candidate running for president who was also deeply disliked by the washington establishment and the washington cartel. a candidate who had been dismissed outright by the media. some polls had been 15-20 points behind. to let theused establishment and the cartel and the media do your thinking for you.

he refused to let them tell you how to vote. you want to the candidate who didn't adopt his positions because of the latest opinion polls, but instead because of a deep and underlying conservative philosophy that grounded him, so that he knew exactly what he believed, exactly what the principles were that built this great nation. [applause] sen. cruz: and so tonight i want to say to the people of new hampshire, thank you for what you did 36 years ago. thank you for giving america, and the world, and history itself, our 40th president of the united states, ronald wilson reagan. [applause] sen. cruz: and i asked the people of new hampshire, and the

people of south carolina, and the people of the father, and the people of the super tuesday states on march 1, to each of you, do not listen to our words. do not listen to the rhetoric from campaigns, but rather hold each and every one of us accountable. hold me accountable and hold every other candidate accountable to be a consistent conservative. [applause] sen. cruz: if you want a candidate to repeal obama care, then support a candidate who has led the fight to reveal obamacare. [applause] sen. cruz: if you want a president to stop amnesty, to secure the borders and keep us safe, and support a candidate

who has led the fight to stop amnesty, to secure the border, and to keep us safe. [applause] if he wanted candidate to support life and marriage and religious liberty, and support a candidate who has spent decades of his life fighting to defend life and marriage and religious liberty. [applause] if you want to candidate to defend the second amendment right to keep and bear arms -- [applause] then ask of every candidate, where were you in the spring of 2013, when barack obama and harry reid and chuck schumer tried to undermine the second amendment right to keep and bear arms? candidate who will

stand on apologetically with the nation of israel -- [applause] sen. cruz: -- then support a candidate who has led the fight over and over again to stand by our friends and ally, the nation of israel. [applause] sen. cruz: and if you want a commander in chief who will for sell the most solemn obligation of the president, to keep this nation safe, then support a candidate who has demonstrated the commitment, the judgment, the experience, the clarity of vision, to identify our enemy, to call it by its name -- radical islamic terrorism. [applause]

sen. cruz: and to utterly and completely defeat isis. [applause] i am elected president, every militant on the face of the planet will know, if you go and join isis, if you wage jihad on the united states of america, if you attempt to murder innocent americans, you are signing your death warrant. [applause] sen. cruz: and i'll tell you this. if the other states of this country follow the lead of the good men and women of iowa and support this campaign, then i tell you this -- this july in

cleveland, he will hear these words spoken from the podium of the unified republican convention. i want to say to every member of the democratic party who believes in limited government, and personal opportunity and the united states constitution, in a safe and secure america, come home." [applause] sen. cruz: to the reagan democrats, your party has left you. and the republican party wants you. we welcome you back. [applause] sen. cruz: because together, this year, republicans in the reagan democrats can send an unmistakable message -- the

message of a reagan-like landslide that once and for all will drive the liberal elite and the washington cartel into the potomac and out to sea, never to be seen again. [applause] sen. cruz: together, we can bring out a new era of economic growth, of military strength, of international security, and the future of hope that our children deserve. if we can and to do more than hope, if we aspire to govern by a higher standard, a standard that transcends political party and race and gender and income, then to everyone that is tired of a president that divides us daily on racial lines, on ethnic lines, on religious lines, on gender lines, on socioeconomic lines, we will have a president that once again seeks to

unite us and bring us together on our shared values of who we are as americans. [applause] sen. cruz: the most solemn responsibility of the president is to keep this country safe, and we will stop the weakness and appeasement. we will stop making excuses for global bullies and terrorists, and rather simply do what it takes to defeat them. airmen andd thei marines, to the husbands and wives who wake up at night wondering if their loved ones are still alive, i want to speak to the little kids who have been waiting months and months to get a hug from daddy, a kiss from mommy. to all of our men and women sent into combat with their arms tied behind their back with rules of engagement that are wrong, that are immoral, that will end in january 2017. [applause] you will have a commander-in-chief who finally has your back. [applause] and to the police officers and the firemen and the first responders, the heroes who

rushed into burning buildings instead of out of burning buildings, the last seven years of having a president, having an attorney general that demonizes you, that vilifies you, that sides with the criminals rather than law enforcement, that will end in january 2017. [applause] so tonight, the state of iowa, the democrats here seem to be at a virtual tie between one candidate who admits he is a socialist and the other candidate who pretends she is not. [laughter] i wish them both luck. but i will tell you this.

as margaret thatcher observed, the problem with socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money. [applause] let me tell you, tonight, i cannot wait to stand on that debate stage with hillary clinton. [applause] we will win by speaking the truth with a smile. the truth is, the american people are fed up with washington, with the corrupt class that enriches itself and leaves behind the working men and women of this country. the truth is, the american people are fed up with a federal government that views the bill

of rights and the constitution as a rough draft and an inconvenience and something to be set aside, and we are ready to get back to the vision of the framers to take back the inalienable rights that are given to us by our creator. [applause] the reason all of you are here is the same reason i am here. the same reason heidi and i have spent every waking moment for the last year. we love our kids. our girls, caroline and catherine, at age 7 and age 5, everyone of us here, when we go to bed at night, we think, what kind of world are we leaving our kids?

leaving our kids? are we giving our children a brighter future? are we giving our children what our parents gave us, a country with greater freedom, greater opportunity, more promise, more hope? you want to know why i am getting on a plane in about an hour and flying all night to new hampshire to knock on doors and sit down and visit with people and ask for their support. the reason is simple. because when i look my girls in the eyes 10 or 20 years from now, i am not going to tell them , we could have stood up and saved this country, but we did not do everything we could. instead, i am going to tell them that millions of americans saw that america was in jeopardy, and we rose up together and said that we are going to preserve this nation for our children and grandchildren. [applause] to those who supported other candidates in this race.

the republican party is so blessed to have a bounty of talented, young, dynamic candidates, people who are friends, people i like and respect. to those who supported other candidates, i will tell each of them, we welcome you as part of our team. [applause] because if we stand together as one, if the american people stand together and say, "we want our country back," there is no washington that can stand against the american people, that can stand against the grassroots, that can stand against our unity. we are going to do this together as a movement from the people. and i tell you tonight, iowa has

made clear to america and the world, morning is coming. morning is coming. [applause] 16 when we started this journey, there was 17 candidates. i was told by everybody, do not go to iowa. you could never finish in the top 10. and i said, but i have friends in iowa, i know a lot of people in iowa. i think they will really like me, let's give it a shot. they told me not to do it. we finished second and i want to tell you something. i am just honored, i am really honored. andnt to congratulate ted all of the incredible candidates, including mike huckabee, who has become a really good friend of mine.

so, congratulations to everybody. [applause] congratulations. i want to thank all of the folks who worked with us. we had a great team and will continue to have a great team. the wayo happy with everything worked out. i have to think my wife and laura, and eric, and vanessa, and don. they went out and redoing speeches. did ak vanessa and don six speeches today. i have to thank my family. they have been so amazing and so supportive. will be appear next weekend. be proclaiming victory, i hope. i don't know who is going to win between bernie and hillary. i don't know what is going to happen with hillary. she has bigger problems, may be bigger than the problems she has in terms of nomination. [applause] but we have had so many different indications and polls that we have beat her. theill go on to get republican nomination and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie, or whoever the hell they throw up there. iowa, we love you and we thank you. you are special. , manyl be back many times. in fact, i think i might come back here and buy a car. thank you. thank you very much. they told us because we offer too much optimism in a time of anger we had no chance. for months they told us because we did not have the right endorsement or right political connections we had no chance. they told me we had no chance because my hair wasn't great enough and my boots were too high. [applause] they told me i needed to wait my turn, that i needed to wait in line. [applause] tonight here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to clean up this mess. [applause] time for waiting. for everything that makes this nation great now hangs in the balance.

this is a time where we need a president that will truly preserve and protect and defend the constitution of the united states, not one that undermines, attacks, and ignores the constitution of the united states. [applause] this is a time for a president who will defend our second amendment rights. no ap a president who undermines them. this is a time for a president who will rebuild the u.s. military. the world is a safer and better place when the united states has the strongest military in the world. [applause] this is no ordinary election. 2016 is not just a choice between political parties. 2016 is a referendum, a referendum on our identity as a nation and as a people. and in america there are only two ways forward. you can either be greater than

we have ever been, or we can be a great nation and decline. bernie sanders or hillary clinton, will they get elected? [booing] if they win, obamacare becomes permanent win, these unconstitutional executive orders from this president become permanent. if they win, our military continues to decline. the balance of our supreme court will be controlled by liberal justices for a decade or longer. they cannot win. hillary clinton is disqualified from being the president of the united states. [applause] she stored classified and sensitive information on her e-mail server because she thinks she is above the law. hillary clinton can never be

commander-in-chief because anyone who lies to the families of people who have lost their lives in service to this country can never be commander in chief of this country. [applause] we will unify this party and we will unify the conservative movement. students living under the burden of student loans, to the families struggling to raise their children with the right values, we will take our message to them and bring them to our side. when i am our nominee, we will unite our party, grow our party, and we will defeat hillary clinton or bernie sanders. [applause] i want to thank our all powerful and mighty god. [applause] that he has given us to be a part of this endeavor here in iowa. i want to thank my wife and my family. he worked really hard and earned his victory tonight. [applause] i want to thank another good friend of mine, governor mike huckabee for his service to our country and of the state of arkansas. he has announced he is suspending his campaign. we think governor huckabee for all he has done. [applause] ago anturies extraordinary generation living in one place at one time. time here in one america declared their independence from the most powerful country in the world. our rights come from our creator, not from our government. the rest is a two century history of the most extraordinary nation in the history of mankind. i know america is special week as i was raised by people who knew what life was like outside of america.

i was raised by people who came to this country with nothing. they barely spoke english at the time. my father stopped going to school when he was nine years old. he had to go work. he would never go back to school and work for the rest of his life. when my parents arrived here in this country they struggled, they were discouraged. they persevered. less than a decade after they arrived here with nothing, my father owned a home. not a mansion, but a safe and stable home in a safe and stable never heard. decades later they were able to ti retire with dignity. they left all four of their children with a life better than their own. this is the purpose of my parents' life, to give their kids the chance to do what they never could. that is not just my story. that is our story.

that is america's story. that is the story of your parents. your parents who sacrificed and gave up so much so you could be what they could not. it is the stories of those parents today doing the same for their children. it is this that makes america special. it is this that we fight to preserve. this is the kind of country and want to leave for my children. this is the kind of country your children deserve to inherit as well. and this is what we must now decide. whether we will remain that kind of country, or whether we will be the first generation to lose it. and itn important choice is one that each generation before us had to make. america is not a special country by accident. america is a great nation because each generation before us did their part. each generation before us sacrificed, they confronted

their challenges, they embraced their opportunities, and each generation has left it off better than they had it. arrived forent has this generation of americans to rise up to the calling of our heritage. the time has come for us to take our place and do what we must and when i am elected president of these great united states, we will do our part. [applause] when i -- [applause] i am elected president, when we together achieve this victory, we will embrace all of the principles that made america

great and we will apply them to the unique challenges of this century. when our work is done, here is what history will say of this generation. it will say we lived in the early years of this new century and in uncertain and difficult times, but we remembered who we were. we rose up to the challenge of our times and confronted our problems and we solved them. and because we did, the american dream did not just survive. it reached more people and changed more lives than ever before. because we did, our children and grandchildren grew up in the freest and most prope prosperous america. the 21st century was not just as good as the 20th century. it was better. it was a new, american century. this is the task before us. and i think my lord and savior is as christ. i think god for allowing me the opportunity to come this far with each of you. i am grateful to you, iowa. you believed in me when others didn't think this might was possible, when perhaps we were lost in the daily narrative. but some suggested that perhaps it was time to step aside. you believed in may. he walked with us. he walked with us. you made the calls and knocked on doors. we are going to be back. i will be back here in october of next year and september of this year. [applause] because, i said next year. i will be back next year too, but i will be back in october and september of this year the

cousin when i am the nominee, we this yeareptember of because when i am the nominee, we will win iowa and we will win this election. [applause] bernie sanders: nine months ago we came to this beautiful state. we had no political organization. we had no money. we had no name or position and we were taking on the most

powerful, political organization in the united states of america. [applause] and tonight, while the results are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie. [applause] and while -- >> bernie! >> bernie! bernie! bernie sanders: and while the

results are still not complete, it looks like we will have half of the iowa delegates. [applause] i want to take this opportunity to congratulate secretary clinton. yep. [applause] her organization for waging a very vigorous campaign. and i want to think governor o'malley. [applause] it is it is never easy to lose. i have lost more than one campaign. he should know he contributed a whole lot to the dialogue. he ran an issue oriented campaign. he won the respect of the american people. [cheering and applause]

as i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of iowa have sent a profound message to the political establishment, to the economic establishment and, by the way, to the media establishment. [cheering and applause] [chanting] sen. sanders: given the enormous crises facing our country, it is just too late for establishment politics and establishment economics. what the american people have said, and by the way, i hear this not just from progressives,

i hear it from conservatives and moderates, and that is we can no longer continue to have a corrupt campaign finance system. [cheering and applause] i am the former chairman of the senate veterans committee and in that capacity, not only have i ever worked hard to try and protect -- i have had the privilege of meeting so many men and women who put their lives online to defend our way of life. what they were protecting is an american democracy of one person, one vote, not billionaires buying elections. [cheering and applause]

i am overwhelmed. i am moved by the fact that millions of people throughout this country have helped volunteer in our campaign, that we have received in this campaign 3.5 million individual contributions. people who went to berniesanders.com. you know what the average conservation was? $27. [cheering and applause] we do not represent the interests of the billionaire class, wall street or corporate america. we don't want their money. i am very proud to tell you we are the only candidate on the

democratic side without a super pac. [cheering and applause] the reason we have done so well here in iowa. the reason i believe we are good to do so well in new hampshire and other states that follow, the reason is the american people are saying no to a rigged economy. [cheering and applause] they no longer want to see an economy in which the average american works longer hours for lower wages while almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%. [cheering and applause]

what the american people understand is this country was based on fairness. it is not fair when the top .1% today owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%. it is not fair when the 20 wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than the bottom half of america. [cheering] you guys ready for a radical idea that? [cheering] so is america. that idea is we are going to create an economy that works for working families, not just the billionaire class. [cheering]

[applause] yes, when millions of our people are working for starvation wages, we are going to wage -- we are good to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. -- we are going to raise the minimum wage to $50 an hour. we are going to have to pay equity for women. [cheering and applause] i have been all over this beautiful state of iowa. we have spoken to 70,000 people. meeting after meeting, and hear people say bernie, i went to college. i graduated college. now i am 60, 80, $90,000 in debt. that is crazy. people should not be punished by -- punished financially because they want to get a decent

education. [cheering and applause] that is why i believe in the year 2016, public colleges and universities should be tuition free. [cheering and applause] then my critics say that is a great idea. how are you going to pay for it i will tell you how we are to pay for it. we are going to impose a tax on wall street. [cheering and applause] the greed, the recklessness and the illegal behavior of the wall street drove this economy to its knees.

the american people bailed out wall street, now it is wall street's time to help the middle class. [cheering and applause] when we talk about transforming america, we will end the disgrace of having more people in jail than any other country. [cheering] disproportionately african-american and latino. [cheering] what we are going to do is provide jobs and education for our kids, not more jail and incarceration. [cheering and applause] i will tell you something that really does astound me. among the senate energy

committee, i have talked to scientists all over the world. the debate is over climate change is real -- the debate is over. climate change is real. [cheering and applause] we have a moral responsibility to work with countries throughout the world to transform our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. [cheering and applause] will what amazes me is we have not one republican candidate for president prepared to come up and tell us and agree with virtually all scientists agree with. you know why they are not prepared to do that? because on the day they do acknowledge the climate change, there were to lose their campaign funds from the koch

brothers and the fossil fuel industry. i say to the republicans, stop worrying about your campaign funds from big oil or the koch brothers or the coal industry. worry about your planet you are going to be leaving your children and grandchildren. [cheering and applause] now, i have been criticized during this campaign for many things. [laughter] every single day. that is ok. [crowd noise]

but let me repeat what i believe. i believe that at a time when every major country on earth guarantees health care to all people as a right, i believe we should do the same in the united states of america. [cheering and applause] so for all of my critics out there in the wall street journal and the washington post and in corporate america, wherever you may be, let me tell you straight up, yes, i believe that health care is a right, not a privilege. [cheering and applause] that is why i believe in a medicare for all single-payer programs. which will not only guarantee

health care -- it will not only in the pharmaceutical ripoff of the american people, but it will save the middle class family thousands of dollars a year in health care costs. [cheering and applause] let me conclude by saying what no other candidate for president will tell you. that is that no president, not bernie sanders or anyone else will be able to bring about the changes that the working family and the middle class of this country, that our children, that the seniors deserve. no wonder president can do it, because the powers that be, wall street, with their endless supply of money, corporate america, the large campaign

donors, are so powerful that no president can do what has to be done alone. that is why what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. [cheering and applause] a political revolution that says when millions of people come together, including those who have given up on the political process. they are so dismayed and so frustrated with what goes on in washington, with young people who before had never been involved in the political process. when young people and working people and seniors begin to stand up and say loudly and clearly, enough is enough. [cheering]

that our government, the government of our great country belongs to all of us, and not just a handful of billionaires. when that happens, we will transform this country. thank you all very much. [cheering] ♪ >> if you're interested in the process, it all has to begin in iowa and new hampshire. we don't set the rules in terms of which state's first or second we had to cover the candidates where they are. there are a lot of people interested in this election.

every four years, the american people make a decision to say who should be the leader of the free world. for those who want to follow the process and do it anyway that is completely unfiltered, we are the only place that does that. the other thing to keep in mind is as you look this campaign and you look at these candidates, you are able to see how they are able to try and close the deal. during the final days of any campaign, there is a lot of attention on every nuance, every new story, every speech, every ad. how is one candidate try to rebut the other. in this day and age of social media and twitter. we are the one place that can allow you to step back and watch it. you can get the analysis on other networks. you can hear fewer calls and way in on the programming. we are the one place that allows you to see it as it happens and make up

your own decision. >> senator rand paul finished fifth and i was republican caucuses with 5% of the total vote. the candidate spoke briefly to supporters in the morning. sen. paul: liberty is alive and well in iowa. [cheering and applause] since we are thinking people, i want to thank my wife for letting me do this for the last few years. [cheering and applause] i want to thank my brothers and sisters and nephews and nieces for all coming up to speak. [cheering and applause] and most of all, i want to thank you guys. everyone of you for making this -- making those phone calls, because you believe in a

government so small, you can barely see it. [cheering and applause] liberty they say requires eternal vigilance. to have eternal vigilance, and requires a new generation. every generation has to renew that vigilance of liberty. there will always be people who want the easy way out. there will always be people who say give me power and i will take care of you. give me your liberty and i will take care of you. it is the remnant, it is the few. it is those who will stand up and say we are not standing up desk we will not trade our liberty, -- we will not trade our liberty, not now, not ever. governor o'malley: look. i cannot -- words cannot express how grateful i am to all of you, my true friends, who have helped me in waging this courageous battle. when i got into this eight months ago, i had no doubt that it would be anything but a tough fight. ut a tough fight. it is a tough fight. i have always been drawn to a tough fight. i felt when i got into this, as i looked down the road, i felt very firmly that our country was scanning the horizon looking for new possibilities and new leadership. a way to heal our divisions and move us forward. you guys have been with me every step of the way. i cannot thank you enough. i have come to love iowa. boots on the ground. my son is an american soldier and he is my son. i was so proud to be able to honor that request of hers. in essence, that is what these iowa caucuses are all about. it is about each person's voice being heard. it is about each person story being heard. i decidedthe kids and it would be an extreme poverty indeed if the democratic party only had two candidates to choose from. [cheering and applause] .o we made this fight i cannot thank you enough for giving me an opportunity to be a part of writing the story of our country's future. i want to thank everyone who came out to our events and went to meet your ear.

their 13-year-old girl, abigail, born in the usa, american. home thehat which goes doors of her home will be kicked open and her parents will be deported. we are better people than that. we need to host on to the truth that the enduring symbol of the united states of america is not the barb wire fence, it is the statue of liberty. [cheering and applause] two of the most incredible people i met on the course of this campaign were sandy and lonnie phillips. they lost their daughter in that theater shooting in our, texas. and aurora, texas. they used this campaign. we transformed the grief of all of those who lost loved ones to

guns and gun violence. it was because of our campaign that we drove this issue. it is because of this campaign that we will restore commonsense gun legislation. [cheering and applause] look, this cause continues. this fight continues. proud ofver been more the people that have been associated with this campaign. i have never worked with a better group of young americans and patriotic men and women than the ones i have worked with. i want to say this. no man ever had a stronger, more courageous family and tough fight than i have. [cheering and applause] , thank you for standing by me every step of the way. thank you for being the love of my life, my sword and my shield.

without you, we would never would have been able to help with as many people as we had. tara, jack and william. this fight continues. ink, we fought very hard order to give the people a choice. the people have made their choice tonight. it was hard to get over the threshold. i know that those numbers do not reflect all of the hard work that you did. we have driven this debate. tonight, i have to tell you that i am suspending this presidential bid, but i am not ending this fight. the fight that you and i are engaged in is a tough fight. i believe the toughness of the fight is the way the hidden god has a telling us we are fighting for something worth saving. the american dream is worth saving. this planet is worth saving. as a march 4 to the fog, let us all -- as we march forward to continue tot us

point our country forward. we must hold strong for that third grade kid who is only going to be in third grade wants. we must hold strong for that senior citizen who has worked her whole life and now find yourself having to choose between her food and medicine. let us hold strong for that mom and dad who are working three jobs between them, in order to make ends meet and sweating over cutting up the bills after the kids are in bed. we are a great country. we are a good people because of our generosity, because of our compassion, because of the believe we share and the dignity. our own responsibility to advance the common good. our understanding that we are all in this together, all of us, , american muslims, gay and lesbian, transgender americans. all americans. we are one. our causes one.

see every day. working men like jerry done leave the from columbus -- like jerry dunleavy from columbus, ohio, who requested entire month off his job to come to iowa and cruz andave at camp volunteer full-time. [applause] refused toployer give him the time off, jerry quit his job and came anyway. elliott and josh, students at the university of chicago who spends their winter break at camp cruz. but they did not stop there. they came back this weekend. they hit the phones and pavement so students across this country, rather than having mountains of debt, will instead, have two, three, four, five high-paying job offers and a chance for the american dream. [applause] people liked by alexandra, a 13-year-old girl day, at ourwho yester campaign headquarters, made 823 volunteer calls. [applause]

that has always been the strength of this campaign. by the men and women gathered here, standing up and speaking us out, lifting this country up in prayer each and every day. and let me say, our leadership team. our iowa state chairman matt scholz, what an extraordinary job. these men have become dear and trusted friends. they are warriors, they are men of principle. they stand and speak the truth. they stand and defend their values and let me tell you, these leaders, day after day and week after week, have been crawling across broken glass with knives tween their teeth. are grateful to the state senators, to the state representatives, to the volunteer leaders in each of the 99 counties who stood up and said, we will be heard and this will be decided at the grassroots. [applause] and then, i am so grateful to national leaders, people like dr. dobson. and tony perkins. [applause] and phil robertson. [applause] and governor rick perry. [applause] beck.enn [applause] leaders who have stood and led,

bringing together a coalescing conservative here in iowa and all across the country. do you want to know what scares the washington cartel? actually, not remotely. i don't scare them in the tiniest bit. what scares them is you. [applause] what scares them is that the old reagan coalition is coming back together, of conservatives. [applause] we are saying conservatives and evangelicals and libertarians and reagan democrats all coming together as one, and that

terrifies washington, d.c. [applause] and so to the people of iowa. heidi and i say thank you to your incredible hospitality. thank you for your love. thank you for welcoming us into your homes, into your living room. thank you for welcoming my father to preach from the pulpits of your churches. [applause] and let me say to my parents, mom, thank you. thank you for the incredible, unconditional love is that you have given me every day of my life. the knowledge that whatever i might do, whenever i might say, that my mother loves me. [applause]

to my cousin beebee, who is like a sister to me, we grew up together. i love you. [applause] and to my dad. [applause] a man who came from cuba at age 18 with nothing, with $100 in his underwear. he doesn't carry money in his underwear anymore. [laughter] imprisoned, who was tortured, who washed dishes making $.50 an hour, who has lived the american dream, and a

man who is today a pastor, traveling the country, preaching the gospel. [applause] >> this is the american dream now, coming to fruition. senator cruz: my dad is 76 years old and yet, he has the energy of a teenager. you have been my hero my whole life. i love you, dad. [applause] when the sun rises tomorrow, this campaign will take the next step. we will continue to campaign the same way, sitting down person to person, leader to leader, vfw

hall to dunkin' donuts, returning to the great state of new hampshire. [applause] and let me speak for a minute to the men and women of the state of new hampshire. 36 years ago, you welcomed to the granite state a candidate running for president who was also deeply disliked by the washington establishment and the washington cartel, a candidate who had been dismissed outright by the media. some polls had him 15-20 points behind. but you refused to let the establishment and the cartel and the media to do your thinking for you. you refused to let him to tell them tell you how to vote. accept a position

because of the latest media polls. instead, because of a conservative philosophy that grounded him so that he knew exactly what he believed, exactly what the principles were that built this great nation. [applause] and so, tonight, i want to say to the people of new hampshire, thank you for what you did 36 years ago. thank you for giving america, and the world, and history itself, our 40th president of the united states, ronald wilson reagan. [applause] and i asked the people of new hampshire and the people of south carolina and the people of nevada and the people of the ,uper tuesday states on march 1 to each of you.

do not listen to our words. do not listen to the rhetoric of our campaigns, but hold each and every one of us accountable. hold me accountable and every other candidate accountable to be a consistent conservative. [applause] if you want a candidate to repeal obamacare, that support a candidate who has led the fight to repeal obamacare. [applause] if you want a president to stop amnesty, to secure the borders, and to keep us safe, that support a candidate who has led the fight to stop amnesty, to secure the borders, and to keep us safe. [applause] if you want a candidate to support life and marriage and

religious liberty, that support a candidate who has spent decades of his life fighting to defend life and marriage and religious liberty. if you want a candidate to defend the second amendment right to keep and bear arms, then ask of every candidate, where were you in the spring of 2013 when barack obama and harry reid and chuck schumer tried to undermine the second amendment right to keep and bear arms. if you want a candidate who will stand unapologetically with the nation of israel. [applause] then support a candidate who has

led the fight over and over again to stand by our friend and ally, the nation of israel. [applause] and if you want a commander-in-chief who will fulfill the most solemn obligation of the president to keep this nation safe, then support a candidate who has demonstrated the commitment, the judgment, the experience, the clarity of vision to identify our enemy, to call it by its name -- radical islamic terrorism. [applause] and to utterly and completely defeat isis. [applause] if i am elected president, every

militant on the face of the planet will know, if you go and join isis, if you wage jihad on the united states of america, if you attempt to murder innocent americans, you are signing your death warrant. [applause] and i will tell you this. if the states across the country follow the lead of iowa and support this campaign, then i tell you this, this july in cleveland, you will hear these words spoken from the podium of the unified republican convention. tonight, i want to say to every member of the democratic party who believes in limited government and the united states

constitution and a safe and secure america, come home. [applause] democrats, your party has left you. republican party wants you. we welcome you back. [applause] gether this year, thi republicans and the reagan democrats can send an unmistakable message. the message of a reagan-like landslide that will once and for all drive be liberal elites and the washington cartel into the potomac and out to see. -- and out to sea, never to be seen again.

[applause] together we can bring out a new era of economic growth, of military strength, of international security and the future of hope that our children deserve. if we commit to do more than hope, if we aspire to govern by a higher standard, a standard that transcends political party and race and gender and income, and to everyone that is tired of a president who divides us daily on racial lines, ethnic lines, gender lines, on socioeconomic lines, we will have a president who once again seeks to bring us together and unite us on our shared values of who we are as americans. [applause]

the most solemn responsibility of the president is to keep this country safe. we will stop the weakness and appeasement. we will stop making excuses for global bullies and terrorists and rather, simply do what it takes to defeat them. [applause] i give you my solemn promise. we will finally, finally, finally secure the borders and end sanctuary cities. [applause] i want to speak for a moment to the soldiers, and sailors, and airmen, and marines. i want to speak to the moms and dads let a child serving overseas, i want to speak to the husbands and wives who wake up at night wondering if their loved ones are still alive, i

want to speak to the little kids who have been waiting months and months to get a hug from daddy, a kiss from mommy. to all of our fighting men and women who have been sent into combat with their arms tied behind their backs with rules of i engagement that are wrong, that are immoral, that will end in january 2017. [applause] you will have a commander-in-chief who finally has your back. [applause] and to the police officers and the firemen and the first responders, the heroes who rushed into burning buildings instead of out of burning buildings, the last seven years of having a president, having an attorney general that demonizes you, that vilifies you, that

sides with of the criminals and looters, rather than the brave men and women of law enforcement, that will end in january 2017. [applause] so tonight, the state of iowa, the democrats here seem to be at a virtual tie between one candidate who admits he is a socialist -- [laughter] and the other-- candidate who pretends she is not. i wish them both luck. but i will tell you this. as margaret thatcher observed, the problem with socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money. [applause]

let me tell you, tonight, i cannot wait to stand on that debate stage with hillary clinton. [applause] we will win by speaking the truth with a smile. the truth is, the american people are fed up with washington, with the corrupt class that enriches itself and leaves behind the working men and women of this country. the truth is, the american people are fed up with a federal government that views the bill of rights and the constitution as a rough draft and an inconvenience and something to be set aside, and we are ready to get back to the vision of the framers of protecting the

inalienable rights that are given to us by our creator. [applause] you know, the reason all of you are here is the same reason i am here. the same reason heidi and i have spent every waking moment for the last year. we love our kids. our girls, caroline and catherine, at age 7 and age 5, everyone of us here, when we go to bed at night, we think, what kind of world are relieving our kids? leaving our we kids? are we giving our children a brighter future? are we giving our children what our parents gave us, a country with greater freedom, greater opportunity, more promise, more hope? you want to know why i am getting on a plane in about an hour and flying all night to new

hampshire to knock on doors and sit down and visit with people and ask for their support. the reason is simple. because when i look my girls in the eyes 10 or 20 years from now, i am not going to tell them , we could have stood up and saved this country, but we did not do everything we could. instead, i am going to tell them that millions of americans saw that america was in jeopardy, and we rose up together and said that we are going to preserve this nation for our children and grandchildren. [applause] to those who supported other candidates in this race. the republican party is so blessed to have a bounty of talented, young, dynamic candidates, people who are friends, people i like and respect. to those who supported other candidates, i will tell each of them, we welcome you as part of our team.

[applause] because if we stand together as one, if the american people stand together and say, "we want our country back," there is no washington that can stand against the american people, that can stand against the grassroots, that can stand against our unity. we are going to do this together as a movement from the people. and i tell you tonight, iowa has made clear to america and the world, morning is coming. morning is coming. admiration for governor huckabee and we thank him for all he has done. ago, extraordinary generation living in one place at one time here in america, of an english colony, declared their independence from the most powerful empire in the world. they did it with the powerful words principle that our rights come from our creator, they do not come from our government. the rest is a two century history of the most extraordinary nation in the history of mankind. i know america is special, because i was raised by people that knew what life was like outside of america. i was raised by people who came to this country with nothing. they barely spoke english at the time. they had no money. my father stopped going to school when he was nine years old. he had to go to work. he would never go back to school. he would work for the next 70 years of his life.

when my parents arrived here in this country, they struggled. they were discouraged, but they preserve beard. less than a decade after they nothing, my father a bartender on miami beach, they owned a home. not a mansion, but it safe and stablehome in a safe and neighborhood. decades later, they would retire with dignity and security. the most important thing of all for them, they left all four of their children with a life better than their own. this is the purpose of my parents' life, to give their kids a chance to do all the things they never could. that is not just my story, that is our story. that is america's story. that is the story of your parents. you know the stories of your parents who sacrificed and gave up so much so you could be what they could not.

it is the story of those parents today who are doing the same for their children. it is this that makes america special. it is this what we fight now to preserve. this is the kind of country i want to leave for my children. this is the kind of country your children deserve to inherit. this is what we must now decide. whether we will remain that country or whether we will be the first generation to lose it. it is an important choice. one that each generation before us had to make. america is not a special country by accident. america is a great nation because each generation before us did their part. each generation sacrificed. they confronted their challenges. they embraced the opportunities. for over two centuries, each generation has left the next better off than themselves. now the time has come for us to do the same. now the moment has arrived for this generation to rise up to the calling of our heritage. now the time has come for us to

take our place and do what we must. when i am elected president, we will do our part. [cheering and applause] sen. sanders: and while -- >> bernie. bernie. bernie. sen. sanders: while the results are still not complete, it looks like we will have about half of the iowa delegates. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: i want to take

this opportunity to congratulate secretary clinton. as somebody -- [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: and her organization for waging a vigorous campaign. i want to thank governor o'malley -- [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: it is never easy to lose. i have lost more than one campaign. but he should know he contributed a whole lot to the dialogue. that he ran an issue oriented campaign. and he won the respect of the american people. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: as i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of iowa have sent a very profound message to the

political establishment, to the economic establishment, and, by the way, to the media establishment. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: given the enormous crises facing our country, it is just too late for establishment politics and establishment economics. what the american people have said -- and by the way, i hear this not just from progressives, i hear it from conservatives and moderates. and that is, we can no longer continue to have a corrupt campaign finance system.

[applause] i am the former chairman of the senate veterans committee and in that capacity, not only have i ever worked hard to try to protect the interest of our veterans, i have had the privilege of meeting so many men and women who put their lives online to defend us and our way of life. what they were protecting is an american democracy of one person, one vote, not billionaires buying elections. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: i am overwhelmed. and i am moved by the fact that millions of people throughout this country have helped volunteer in our campaign, that

we have received in this individual 3.5 million contributions. people who went to berniesanders.com. you know what the average contribution was? $27. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: we do not represent the interests of the billionaire class, wall street , or corporate america. we don't want their money. and i am very proud to tell you that we are the only candidate on the democratic side without a super pac. [cheers and applause]

sen. sanders: the reason we have done so well here in iowa, the reason i believe we are good to do so well in new hampshire and other states that follow, the reason is the american people are saying no to a rigged economy. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: they no longer want to see an economy in which the average american works longer hours for lower wages while almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: what the american people understand is this country was and is based on fairness. it is not fair when the top .1%

today owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%. it is not fair when the 20 wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than the bottom half of america. you guys ready for a radical idea that? [cheers] well, so is: america. and that radical idea is we are going to create an economy that works for working families, not just the billionaire class. [applause] sen. sanders: yes, when millions of our people are working for starvation wages, we are going

to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. yes, we are going to have to pay equity for women. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: i have been all over this beautiful state of iowa. we have spoken to some 70,000 people. in meeting after meeting, and hear people say bernie, i went , to college. i graduated college. now i'm $60,000, $80,000, $90,000 in debt. that is crazy. people should not be punished financially because they want to get a decent education. [applause] sen. sanders: that is why i believe in the

year 2016, public colleges and universities should be tuition-free. then my critics say that is a great idea. how are you going to pay for it? i will tell you how we are to pay for it. we are going to impose a tax on wall street. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: the greed, the recklessness, and the illegal behavior of the wall street drove this economy to its knees. the american people bailed out wall street, now it is wall street's time to help the middle class. [cheers and applause]

sen. sanders: when we talk about transforming america, we will end the disgrace of having more people in jail than any other country. disproportionately african-american and latino. [cheers] sen. sanders: what we are going to do is provide jobs and education for our kids, not more jails and incarceration. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: i will tell you something that really does astound me. i'm on the senate energy committee, i have talked to scientists all over the world. the debate is over climate -- the debate is over, climate change israel. we have a moral responsibility

to work with countries throughout the world to transform our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. [applause] sen. sanders: and what amazes me, what totally amazes me is that we have not one republican candidate for president prepared to come up and tell us and agree with virtually all scientists agree with. you know why they are not prepared to do that? because on the day they do acknowledge the reality of climate change and call for change, you know what happens they're going to lose their campaign funds from the koch brothers and the fossil fuel industry. so i say to the republicans,

stop worrying about your campaign funds from big oil or the koch brothers or the coal industry. worry about the planet you are going to be leaving your children and grandchildren. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: now, i have been criticized during this campaign for many things. [laughter] sen. sanders: every single day. that is ok. that's ok. [cheers] sen. sanders: but let me repeat what i believe. i believe that at a time when every major country on earth guarantees health care to all

people as a right, i believe we should do the same in the united states of america. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: so for all of my critics out there in the "wall street journal," and "washington post," and in corporate america, yes, i believe that health care is a right, not a privilege. [cheers and applause] sen. sanders: that is why i believe in a medicare for all single-payer program, which will not only guarantee health care and theit will not only pharmaceutical rip-off of the american people, but it will save the middle class family thousands of dollars a year in

health care costs. [applause] let me conclude by saying what no other candidate for president will tell you. that is that no president, not bernie sanders or anyone else will be able to bring about the changes that the working family and the middle class of this country, that our children, that our seniors deserve. no one president can do it, because the powers that be, wall street, with their endless supply of money, corporate america, the large campaign donors are so powerful that no president can do what has to be done alone. that is why what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution. [cheers and applause]

sen. sanders: a political revolution that says when millions of people come together, including those who have given up on the political process, they are so dismayed and so frustrated with what goes on in washington, with young people who before had never been involved in the political process, when young people and working people and seniors begin to stand up and say loudly and clearly, enough is enough. [applause] sen. sanders: that our government, the government of our great country belongs to all of us, and not just a handful of billionaires. when that happens, we will transform this country. thank you all very much. ♪ >> if you're interested in the process, it all has to begin in iowa and new hampshire. we don't set the rules in terms of which state is first or second. we have to cover the candidates where they are. there are a lot of people interested in this election. every four years, the american people make a decision to say who should be the leader of the free world, who should be our president. and so for those who want to follow the process and do it in a way that is completely

unfiltered, we are the only place that does that. the other thing to keep in mind is as you look this campaign and , you look at these candidates, you are able to see how they are able to try and close the deal. and during the final days of any campaign, there is a lot of attention on every nuance, every news story every speech, every , ad. how is one candidate try to rebut the other. how you're trying to respond to those in this day and age of social media and twitter. the new cycle is constant. we are the one place that can allow you to step back and watch it. you can get the analysis on other networks. you can certainly hear the viewer calls and way in a programming, but we are the one place that allows you to see it as it happens and make up your own decision. >> senator rand paul finished fifth in iowa's republican caucuses with 5% of the total vote. the candidate spoke briefly to

supporters in des moines. sen. paul: liberty is alive and well in iowa. [applause] since we are thanking people, i want to thank my wife for letting me do this for the last few years. i want to thank my brothers and sisters and nephews and nieces for all coming up to speak. [applause] and most of all, i want to thank you guys. everyone of you for making those phone calls, day in and day out, because you believe in a government so small, you can barely see it. [applause] paul: liberty, they say,

requires eternal vigilance. to have eternal vigilance, it requires a new generation. every generation has to renew that vigilance of liberty. there will always be people who want the easy way out. there will always be people who say, give me power and i will take care of you. give me your liberty and i will take care of you. but it is the remnant, it is the few. it is those who will stand up and say we are not standing up , we will not trade our liberty, not now, not ever. [applause] sen. paul: against all odds. against a little bit of bias here and there. [laughter]
