the president said he was disappointed that house majority leader nancy pelosi and senate democratic leader chuck schumer declined the invitation to attend the meeting. mattis was also in the room and provided information on the north korean missile launch. pres. trump: thank you very much. as you probably have heard, and some of you have reported, a a littleas launched while ago from north korea. let me tell you we will take care of it. we of general mattis in the room with us and we have had a long discussion on it. schumerng said, chuck and nancy blew see did not show firm -- pelosi did not show up for meeting today. i am not that surprised. we have a lot of differences. they are weak on crime, illegal immigration. they want the illegal folks to -.e into our border
9:13 pm
we have it without the wall which we are going to get. before this meeting and missile launch, we have been week on military, in terms of spending. the military is always secondary to them. the military to me. this will not be here without her powerful military. we're building a stronger, bigger, better military than ever before. general mattis can testify to that. they want tax increases. and we want major tax decreases .and decided not to show up they want tax increases and we want major tax decreases. they decided not to go show up. they are all talk and now it is not even talk. they did not show up for the meeting. in light of the missile launch, they will be here very quickly or at least the sessions will

take place fairly quickly. in a good are position in terms of the meeting we just had. with the republican senators. it was outstanding. i think we have tremendous support. i was informed by mitch we had a unanimous vote from the republican side at least. we have a unanimous vote on the tax bill, and it goes now to the next step. i think we will get it passed. i think it will pass and it will be very popular. it will have lots of adjustments before then, but the and result will be a very, very massive -- the largest in the history of our country -- tax cuts. lots of good things are going to happen, including bringing back -- and probably will end up being over $4 trillion money offshore. . companies were just notable to bring it back i think it will be a number
9:15 pm
over $4 trillion. corporate will be able to compete now against the world. if you look at china, so many other countries, many of the countries. china is at 15%. they are lower sns. we are getting it down to a level that will either be lower all right in the ballpark so that we can compete better with our great, great companies. that means jobs and lots of other things. thevery happy to see consumer confidence level is just about the highest it has ever been. in fact, i do not want to make any mistakes in terms of press because you will get me on it. to the best of my knowledge, it is the best it is ever been. consumer confidence has been setting records. their confidence in the people leading. i think it will get better and better. i think this vote on taxes, which are really tax cuts and reform, will be very important. we had a really good day today.
9:16 pm
we had a phenomenal meeting with the republican senators. it was very special, that meeting. it was very, very special. camaraderie. it was somewhat of a love fest. they want to see it happen knowledge for the republican party, but they want to see it happen for the country because they know how important it is. to compete and win. with that, i understand you want to say a few words. i will ask mitch mcconnell. >> i think it is regrettable our democratic colleagues chose not to join us today. congress have to pass the bill and the president signed the bill. that means congress on the white house always negotiate legislation. we have important work to do. we have deadlines to meet. we have a military in need of our supports. that needs to happen now. i think it is regrettable that
9:17 pm
are democratic colleagues in leadership chose not to participate because we have to negotiate these bills to get this work done so the people we represent -- and to help our difficultith these situation. i hope our friends and leadership on the other side of the aisle can choose to participate so we get the work done. pres. trump: thank you. i haves going to say, been in his position with a previous president and i do not recall turning down anything from the white house. only one person in america can sign a bill into law and that is the president of the united states. you cannot negotiate the spending bill without the person who signs the bill in the room. democratic leaders in the house and senate need to understand the way the government works. administration has to be part of the ultimate negotiation over what the spending level is

going to be for the next year. pres. trump: we are very far apart, because our views on crime and immigration and the military, so many are different. but a lot of things have happened, even over the past two hours with respect to the missile launch. our military funded and funded now. it is going to be, bigger, better, stronger than it is. that is the difference from this morning. when i told them we are way far away, and with that, i may have general mattis say a couple of words about what he has found out. do want to say couple of little pieces of information? over two and a half hours ago, north korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile. thannt higher, frankly,
9:19 pm
any previous shots they have taken. the research and development effort on their part is to be building ballistic missiles that can threaten everywhere in the world, basically. the south koreans have fired some pinpoint missiles out into the water to make sure north korea understand that they could be taken under fire by our ally. the bottom line is it is a continued effort to build a threat surge that endangers world peace, regional peace, and certainly the united states. pres. trump: thank you, general. we will take care of that situation. thank you all very much. i appreciate it. thank you. changed.mp: nothing nothing changed. we have a very serious approach. nothing changed. we take it very seriously.
9:20 pm
pres. trump: i would absolutely blame the democrats. if it happens, it is going to be over. illegals pouring into the country's. crime pouring into the country. nope boardwalk. i got elected partially because of a border wall. we want strong funding for the military. they don't. so many things. as an example, they want high taxes, we want to cut taxes. we will reform and simple by. -- simplify. they want high taxes, we want low taxes. we will see. right now, things have changed over the last two hours because two hours ago a missile was launched. that will have a huge effect on schumer and pelosi. i think. we will see. we will learn very soon. they should be calling immediately and saying that we
9:21 pm
want to see you but probably they won't. nothing, to them, is important other than raising taxes. that is the only thing they like doing. raising taxes. thank you all very much. thank you.: thank you very much. is a tweet from nancy pelosi responding to the president. "donald trump knows his verbal abuse will no longer be tolerated. showspty chair photo op he's more interested in stents than addressing the needs of the american people. poor ryan and mcconnell regulated to props. sad." that from nancy pelosi. following the meeting with president trump, majority leader mitch mcconnell spoke briefly to

reporters about the tax bill and the decision by democratic congressional leaders not to attend a meeting with the white and the president. he was joined by other senate leaders, including john cornyn. later, we will hear from chuck schumer. sen. mcconnell: good afternoon, everyone. as you know, we had lunch with the president. members q&a for our for about an hour. this is about the first comprehensive tax reform and 31 years in which we fully intend to accomplish in the next few days. the budget committee will be meeting at 2:30 to take a step that is
