officer shooting him in the head. fellow officers caught up with the suspect and another gunfight broke out. that suspect was left dead and there was a woman with him apparently, also that woman still on the run this morning. debris found floating off the north coast of oahu, hawaii, may be all that's left of two marine helicopters that collided over the pacific ocean on friday. the coast guard says that debris is consistent with the type of chopper that those two groups were flying during a nighttime training mission. rescue crews have expanded their serve to cover nearly 20,000 miles. 12 marines remain missing. federal aid is now flowing into flint, michigan. president obama signing a relief order for emergency funds to help with the tap water crisis that involves lead contaminat n contamination. michigan's attorney general also investigating a deadly legionnaires' outbreak in the city that began in 2014. ten people have died as a result. that is the same year that the city switched its water source to save money.

iranian prison for a crime he did not commit. amir hekmati is coming home. amir's friend and fellow marine joins us right now. nick, you got to be happy. >> it's a great day, good morning, how are you, sir? >> good. tell me about the relationship

you two had. >> amir and i served together in the marines. we were at language school together in monterey, california, from 2002 to 2004. he consider him a great friend. he's a fantastic marine and i can't get the smile off my face he's finally out of iran. >> what reason was he going there? >> he was going there to celebrate with his family religious observance and he was born in america, lived in michigan, and has family still in iran. he went to spend time with his grandmother i believe and was able to be there for about two weeks with family before he was rolled up by iranian forces and held in captivity. >> arrested in august of 2011. he gets wrongly convicted, besides that, he was jailed for no reason, he's in germany waiting to meet his family. the reunion will be tremendous. for the first time, nick, share

with me what you know about what his captivity was like, for example some of the things he was forced to go through. >> sure, so amir's captivity in eben prison is a cold one, no heat and electricity, he suffered long bouts of isolation, purposely given lithium so they could get him addicted to him and took it away so he could experience the withdrawal symptoms. they would whip the bottom of his feet, obviously they coerced a confession out of him early on which led to his conviction in iran of espionage and they charged him with a death sentence but fortunately that was overturned and reduced through their kangaroo court system. we're just very thankful he's out of iranian soil and back on a u.s. military base in germany. >> and nick, when he meets his family and comes back you'll have a chance to talk to him again. do you feel when you look at

what happened with him and your buddy, do you feel the government has done enough to get the marines out of harm's way? >> listen, it was always a humanitarian issue with us. i speak with his sister fairly often and amir himself never really wanted to be part of a political process, never felt like he wanted to be a political pawn and we always just pushed for four and a half years since 2011 for his release on humanitarian basis. why is this american citizen being held? why is this u.s. marine being held and you know he would dictate letters over the phone to his mother and open letters to our president, to the ayatollah in iran, anybody who would listen just to seek medical care, seek time with his ailing father. that was the biggest push to get the family back together. >> i'm sure he appreciates the hard work. nick kaywork, your friend is back and we cannot wait to hear his story.

beginning, so broadly critics of this move say it opens the door and you just heard that from 2016 candidates. it opens the door to more of this. it doesn't discourage it. that said, you know, the families of those five are ecstatic that they are out of iran in custody and dual track negotiation that took some 14 months. >> so the president by the way is going to be speaking to the secretary of state shortly but the president really seems to be taking a bow for the white house yesterday, deservedly? >> well, listen, the administration is very clear that they believe they have stopped iran from getting a nuclear weapon, that it's going to take one year to have a breakout to a nuclear bomb. there are a lot of other people who don't believe that that one year is intact and that iran can do things secretly and has been separately. the big issue is compliance and how we'll check and make sure

that they're meeting all of the obligations of the deal. israel obviously feels differently. >> all right, let's switch to domestic politics, bret, two weeks from today the iowa caucuses. last night on abc in what is probably going to be a lightly watched debate, given when it was and hillary and bernie and martin squared off. unlike the first time they went at each other. for folks who missed it and we know it's a lot, listen to the former first lady and the senator from new england spar over a myriad of topics. watch this. >> fact is, we have the affordable care act. that is one of the greatest accomplishments of president obama of the democratic party and of our country. >> what the secretary neglected to mention, not just the 29 million still have no health insurance, that even more are underinsured with huge copayments and deductibles.

>> yes for ten seconds -- >> we're going to a commercial. he didn't get it from lester holt. >> i think bernie sanders had a good night. >> yes. >> listen, both of them, hillary clinton and bernie sanders had moments. bernie sanders on wall street, fighting back on health care. from a progressive point of view, where the democratic party is, better than esanders did nothing that prevents his momentum from continuing it seems in iowa and new hampshire and that is a big deal for the clinton campaign. so i think that's, you know, there was a time when hillary clinton didn't even mention bernie sanders' name in this campaign. >> right. >> now the elbows are sharpened and this is the last debate before iowa and new hampshire. the democrats don't have another debate until two days after the new hampshire primary. >> it's very interesting. i saw the new york times said 11 anonymous sources, higher ups in the hillary clinton camp that are faulting their strategy, hillary strategy not destroying

bernie before he got all this momentum. they made another huge tactical error and again, it's hillary clinton's camp going at each other. >> yes, and that's not something you ever want to see in the press is somebody leaking about internal battles and that has happened before and the time it happened before, 2008, and right before the iowa caucuses. >> bret on the other side of the aisle the glofds caves came off the krmp krmp and senator ted cruz truce and over the weekend donald trump saying on one of the sunday shows ted cruz is a nasty guy and ted cruz came out with a tweet video asking americans to look at this, donald trump speaking fondly of the clintons. we had donald trump on the program earlier, here's how he responds. >> ronald reagan when he was younger was a pretty strong liberal and became quite conservative, not the most but quite conservative and did become a great president and ronald reagan, you'd have to ask

the same exact question of him. before i was a politician to be honest my views changed and everybody's views changed. if you look at krds krz he was very we ted cruz he was weak on immigration and now all of a sudden saying let's go a wall. i said where did that come from? everybody thought my wall idea wasn't so good and now all of a sudden they're saying let's build a wall. >> who is winning this back and forth? >> well, it's kind of a tie i think. ted cruz is making some points, started with new york values that ended up backfiring it seemed at the debate but in iowa, that is kind of planting the seed about some things that donald trump has said before in positions he's had before on interviews that will certainly be playing in iowa soon. but trump pushing back he is where he is now. he owns it, and that authenticity that i think is

who hates him. >> shkreli claims the drug price hike is why he was arrested. fox news alert now, beginning of the end of a nightmare for americans held in iran. three of them on their way back to freedom right now, after an historic and controversial swap of iranian prisoners. >> this is surely a victory for the men and their families. was the swap ultimately a victory from the iranian president and how does this affect our future relations with iran? >> secretary of state john kerry jounz joins us live from the state department in washington, d.c. good morning to you, mr. secretary. >> good morning to you. >> before we get started about the iran deal i wanted to ask you about the three american contractors who have gone missing in iraq. what can you tell us? >> i can just tell you that we are in very direct contact with the iraqi authorities. we have a good sense of what may have happened, the people following up on it and that's all i can really say at this time. there is a very full effort going to find them as soon as

possible. >> it does sound like they were kidnapped, doesn't it? >> i'm not going to get into the circumstances of what may or may not have happened except to say we have pretty strong indications of where this might have emanated from and we're working hard with the iraqi authorities and hopefully we can secure their release. >> again, mr. secretary, as far as the iran deal goes, what a blessing for the four families and an answer to prayers, but some have said this is a bad deal, four innocent americans for seven criminals and giving clemency to 14 on the interpol list. senator marco rubio had this to say about the iran deal. >> what the president's now doing not just with this but with the castro brothers and what he did with bergdahl, put a price on the head of every american abroad. >> does he have a point, mr. secretary? >> i think he's running for

president, if i've been following the news correctly, and so i'm really going to just address the reality of what took place here. the fact is that we had people that we felt were wrongfully held and wrongfully convicted and then imprisoned in iran, and we also had some people here who had committed violations of sanctions law. we were about to lift the sanctions, and many of those people who had been in prison, we had enforced the law and convicted them and done what we needed to do to enforce the sanctions but several of them, a good number were months away, just literally a few months away from getting out anyway, so we don't feel like we traded something that was critical with respect to a principle. we enforced the law, put them in jail. we also kept the sanctions in place and then we lifted them when the terms of the agreement were met and we thought it was appropriate to get our people home. that was critical.

and i think we did this by the way, iran asked for many of the people, they asked for people with criminal records. we didn't touch any of them. they said no we will not let anybody out who committed murder, any terrorist, anybody else. these are people with sanctions violations. so we feel very comfortable that the united states of america held onto its principles, got its people home, kept the faith with them and i do not believe we have invited further situations any more than everyday that unfortunately is part of the reality of life on a global basis but nothing here encourages it, believe me. >> by almost all accounts i think you'll agree with me that these americans who have dual citizenship in some of the cases were wrongly jailed and we found out about an hour ago they were being tortured in prison through forced addiction and being slapped on the bottom of their feet. in the big picture people see eight criminals convicted, and

we see five americans who were wrongly jailed and we don't see that that is being equal. >> well there is no equivalency in terms of what they were being held for, you're absolutely correct. we never asserted that. there is no owe quif lency whatsoever between someone in the united states violating the law and being imprisoned and people wrongfully held. the issue is how do you get them home? some of them faced sentences up to 2021, 2022, jason rezaian a longer sentence. the question is if you get them out, there had to be some component of exchange and what we gave up we believe were people about to get out anyway and people that we couldn't get our hands on. so i just don't agree. i think there is a rectitude in what we achieved. we kept our principles. the sanctions, by the way, we will continue to sanction if there is activity that is

inappropriate. sanctions remain in place for human rights, for arms trafficking, for missiles, and we will continue to enforce that, as you have seen the president has done. >> right, and in fact over the weekend this country has put new sanctions on the country of iran after those ballistic tests of missiles in october. mr. secretary there's a story out there that apparently the iranian foreign minister called you up and said that if you were to put these sanctions on earlier, it's going to screw up this prisoner swap thing. >> no. >> that was a report in reuters. you're saying that didn't happen. >> no, he never called me up to suggest that and we had conversations about the tracks but these tracks were separate. we almost had these folks out several months ago, and then there was a snag that occurred and delayed things. >> the time looks a little suspicious. >> well what can i say?

we were not going to waste any time getting them home. >> so just a coincidence in. >> that is absolutely a coincidence. >> hmm. >> we as i say, with he almost had them out, with he had an agreement i thought in principle two months ago and then there was a difference of opinion over the meaning of something. we had to work that through over the course of the next month, but this was a separate track and we kept it separate very distinctly. i might add that it was, and it's important for people to note that we were lifting sanctions as a result of the iranians walking back their nuclear program, making the world safer, allowing inspectors in, destroying their centrifuges, their reactor and indeed, there was going to be a lifting of sanctions there and it made sense for us to link sanctions related offenses which were about to expire anyway and be released to the release of our people who had years ahead of them in jail.

i'm convinced we got what can be considered to be an appropriate agreement for the united states of america and our people are home and thank god for that. >> mr. secretary, were you as outraged as most americans to see the video of our ten sailors on their knees with their hands behind their head and did you know that when you addressed the american people about their release? >> no, i did not know it at that point in time but yes, i was furious about it and i immediately contacted my counterpart and we indicated our disgust at tha thing. it was clear that it did not come from the ministry of foreign affairs. it was something i think the military over there released on their own, and it was very, very unfortunate, inappropriate and as a former sailor, and member of the military, i was infuriated by it and i expressed that very directly to my counterpart. >> john kerry joining us today

again? i'm seeing the story over the weekend in the "new york times" about 11 different anonymous sources starting to point fingers at each other, could have stamped out the bernie sanders mania before it got started. they didn't. they didn't take him seriously. now it seems to be a familiar pattern. >> right, and you know what is fascinate being that story in the "new york times" democrats close to the clinton campaign taking shots at the democratic national committee for the truncated debate schedule over the weekend nobody is watching. why did they do that, to protect the front-runner hillary clinton. everyone's known that for months. now the clinton campaign when they're down is saying well we want more debates now because hillary clinton they think is a good debater. so all of that flips around. here is where not to just say hey bernie sanders had a great night, where bernie sanders is vulnerable, as he rises in the polls and we learn more details about his plan as a socialist, let's not beat around the bush,

hillary clinton was kicking on that last night. quick example right before the debate he released details of his health plan. how will he pay for it, at least five different taxes, a payroll tax for your employer that will be passed on probably to the consumer, expanding the estate tax and if you make more than $10 million this might kill me, for example, 52% is what bernie sanders wants for income tax, he's coming after you, brian. >> absolutely. the thing is, when he talked about it, he did talk about guns and bernie tends to be more siding with republicans when it comes to guns and that's what hillary clinton is trying to beat him up with. >> right, and that's a vulnerable no doubt for bernie sanders, that he had been more in the middle on some gun control measures. he pushed back and said no, i'm left and nra can't stand me. here is another big issue is that hillary clinton time and time again last night threw her arms around president obama and
