south carolina for sure. governor john kasich is in michigan. and front runner donald trump is unleashing new attacks on jeb bush and his brother as the former president responds of strong words of his own. we have ed henry following the democratic race and there are signs that bernie sanders is gaining on hillary clinton. first, we'll go to carl cameron live in colombia, south carolina with more on on the the republican race, carl? >> reporter: hi, john, george w. bush on the campaign trail is having an affect. today ted cruz held an event to talk about his military and defense policies on the uss worktown in north charleston. he has been be very aggressive

in a battle with marco rubio over defense policy. rubio said that cruz voted to cut defense spending. and today cruz is making the argument that he is in favor of a robust military and outlining how he would do that. and jeb bush, having had his brother here last night is pushing hard and going after donald trump, not only for criticizing his brother over the iraq war and weapons of mass destruction and saying that george bush lied. but making the point donald trump doesn't have military experience. he called him militaryistic because he went to a military school. here is jeb bush taking a shot the at donald trump. >> the leading candidate for president on our side said we don't need sois increase spending. i guess the real estate skills will magically bring to light

10:06 am
moments ago, sharpton talked about clinton's cand daze. >> i think that secretary clinton was candid and open and it is a dialogue hopefully with all of the candidates. >> reporter: interesting, remember right after his victory in new hampshire, bernie sanders went to new york himself to have breakfast with alsharpton. clinton didn't just meet with sharpton. it is interesting because sanders in south carolina today reaching out to the african-american vote and trying to twist and turn a bit of his wall street message and tailor it to an african-american audience. >> the african-american community is suffering even more. [applause] >> and when we talk about what is going on in this country and
10:07 am
the fact that virtually the entire nation suffered terribly as a result of the greed and recklessness and illegal behavior of wall street which drove the economy in a terrible recession, the african-american community suffered more and recoveried in a much less significant way. >> reporter: interesting, both clinton and sanders will come back here ahead of saturday's caucus and hillary clinton on saturday night will be heading to houston, texas. they are not voting until march, but this is a state she is looking ahead to. if she has a unfavorable result saturday she needs to find insurance policys in other states. >> what does that say about her campaign and what will happen? >> four days after the south carolina primary donald trump is
10:08 am
in the polls. he is leading with 36 percent and ted cruz at 18 percent and mark row yubio with 16 and remaining three in single dinlits. with us now is shane. and donald trump out to a 2- 1 lead. those are not the most recent polls out there. and it is the most significant number we have at this point. does it feel like that where you are in south carolina? >> it certainly feels like we've got several days, jon, of a number of attacks on donald trump. we have a long way to go before saturday. i think there is a sense among the rival campaigns that there is potential weakening in trump's polls in south carolina and that centers on saturday's
10:09 am
debate where trump essentially, but did accuse the former president of lying in the iraq war and didn't keep the united states safe. it is a heavy military presence and they make up a large portion of the republican primary electorate and the bush campaign and cruz and rubio are making a bet that it is significant in south carolina. and so we have got several days of nasty campaigning to go. and i would be very surprised if we don't see weakening in trump's numbers. >> obviously jeb bush brought in former president george bush and his mother popular first lady. on the one hand, got big numbers in a rally in south carolina, but on the the other hand, it gives something for donald trump
10:10 am
to make him a punching bag. what is the net affect of george bush's visit, can you tell? >> that is the question. how much of george w. bush's support here in south carolina which is very high. he is 80 plus percent approval rating and what is transferable to his brother. you got the distinct sense that the folks were there to see the former president more so than to see jeb. and i think the former president turned in a good campaign performance and i think jeff with his brother, i think it shows that the former president is significantly better campaigner and i think that president bush made a better case for his brother's candidacy than jeb bush made in months. how much of that is transferable.
10:11 am
they have the endorsement of senator lindsay graham and popular in south carolina and with the former president stumping for him, that is where he has to make a stand. if he doesn't show strength here, frankly i don't see how he has a rational to continue. >> there is a new opinion piece. marco rubio can still win and here's how. he gained momentum in iowa and after the debate mishap and fifth place finish, rubio needs a new strategy to stay in the race. he can show he can takedown trump. you are looking live at senator rubio who is holding a town hall meeting insomerville, south carolina. can he takedown trump? does the wisdom of this opinion
10:12 am
piece? >> i think rubio regaped his footing on the stump after new hampshire and the disastrous debate performance. he's regained energy on the campaign trail and i think from what i have seen in south carolina, he's connecting with voters and drawing crowds. and the chance is there. the problem for marco rubio and same problem for ted cruz. they are sitting there at 18 and 16 percent in the rpc polling averages. someone has to consolidate anti- trump support. if donald trump manages to it win south carolina and we go forward and there are three plus republican candidates in the race aside from donald trump, it is increasingly difficult to see how donald trump doesn't sweep the majority of states in super tuesday. there has to be a consolidation

of the nontrump vote in the republican primary and i am not seeing it yet. >> in the democratic race. a daily beast explains why a vote for bernie sanders is a vote for donald trump. a socialist who wants to raise taxes on everyone and cannot beat any republican period. they suggest if sanders is the democratic nominee, anybody on the republican side, even donald trump wins the election, what do you make of their logic, shane? >> there is not any doubt that senator sanders is not the election ideal for democrat candidates. hillary clinton would be the stronger candidate and given the missteps of her campaign and lack of connection she's been able to make with the democratic voters, it is saying something that she is a significantly better general election candidate than general sanders. it is undoubtedly true who ever
