behind. he was the front-runner after multiple victories. >> i'm so honored by this victory. if you would have told me on june 16th when we came down the escalator at trump tower and it looked like this, a lot of cameras here tonight, it looked literally like the academy awards. i had never seen so many cameras in my life. it takes a lot of courage to run for president. i've never done this before. i've been a job producer and i have done a lot of things. this is nothing i've never done but i felt we had to do. >> last night, trump defined himself as a uniter and vowed he will win in november if his party unites. >> we are going to be a much finer party, a much -- we're going to be a unified party. i mean, to be honest with you. and we are going to be a much billinger par billinger bigger party. our party is expanding and all you have to do is take a look at

the primary states where i've won and we've gone from "x" number to a much larger number. that hasn't happened to the republican party in many, many decades. >> donald trump saying that he's adding numbers to the party by gaining interest and momentum. people getting involved and joining the gop. apparently we have someone at the table who has an issue. >> yes. i want to fix something written in the intro. a producer wrote a sweep of 7 out of 11. how do you sweep 7 out of -- don't you have to sweep everything? they swept the series? you don't sweep 7 out of 11, you morons. >> you do sweep a 7-eleven. >> yes, that is true. it's like they gave lisps to lebron james. trump did good. he could have done better. >> those in glass houses. >> i could have said give dolly

parton a wonder bra. you've got cruz with 26. that's not failing too far behind. that's 93. that's my quibble. proceed with a fantastic opening. >> thank you. >> i'm going to take the numbers and go through the numbers line by line because everyone wants to go at me because i've been saying this is a trump nomination to lose. in the b block, i'm going to break it down -- >> you know that is mine, right? >> i do. >> what he did, it came out with a press conference, took questions, it wasn't a rally or campaign event. you notice the flags behind? it was almost like he said hillary tried to do the same. i think what is important, though, is that what we found out is the turnout in the states have been phenomenal. they broke records in south carolina and in nevada and in new hampshire. they are doing exceeding lie

higher than prior years average turnout and so the numbers, i would hope, would be more indicative of what the voting population is looking for. >> do you believe there's a nexus between the voter turnout that we're seeing right now that has definitely increased and then the general election because that was part of the problem with mitt romney? >> well, that is the speculation if people who normally didn't vote for a party who would come out -- owe want to get engaged. >> right. or to become engaged. it's interesting, the breakdown, people are saying trump is the older white party or the white party. it's not. it's almost falling along the same demographic lines as he had been doing prior to that. in other words, it's not like the voter turnout is coming. >> are you kidding me? look at the numbers sometime. it's like 90% of the voters are white. >> my point is, with the additional people right down at the same rate as people who are

voting for him prior to that. >> i'm a little confused but i certainly think it's overwhelming that the people voting in these primaries are white. it's not even close. >> dana perino looking so nice. >> thank you very much. >> i think hillary clinton making the pivot to the general election, it's easier for her to do because democrats, even though there's going to be some concernation that the bernie sanders voters are not happy about, they will consolidate and rally around her. remember, the democrats tend to treat the general election as if it is the olympics. in the midterm elections they don't show up as much which is why the republicans were able to take back both the house and senate and governorship. they do not do well in national

presidential elections. john mccain got roughly 60 million votes in 2008. mitt romney got around 61 million. obama secured 70 million of those same votes. so in this election, just numberwise, they did better than in 2012 and the democrats have to do worse. >> but that's what is happening, right? >> for the republican party, i hope that is true but i also remember being here about a month before the election in 2012 and believing the polls and that some people said -- not everyone, everyone said romney can't win. nobody is going to vote for obama, right? and then we thought, we have to take an ambien because we just lost. >> you know what is interesting

upcoming contest on march 15th. >> super tuesday and trump sweeps 7 of 11 states. the establishment is so ticked off. mitt romney comes out. >> yes. he's going to give a speech tomorrow. >> think about this. now they want to do it. it's like, your life has left you. she's gone. she's already married the personal trainer, they have two kids and now -- >> those are my metaphors. >> that's good. >> it was very good. >> okay. guys, i've go to clean this table up. it's getting sloppy and i don't like it. >> the report that ben carson is dropping out of the debate raises the question, how could you tell? >> it raises the question, where do people who support him go? do they go to cruz and -- >> also, he was an -- >> because they had 80%.

>> ted cruz won alaska. that just shows you how important a sarah palin endorsement is. >> yeah. >> alrighty then, let's talk about the party of juan. the donald certainly knows how to hit right back after being mocked. >> we're going to make america great again, folks. we're going to make it great again. and i watched hillary's speech and she's talking about wages have been poor and everything is poor and doing badly. she's been there for so long. i mean, if she hasn't straightened it out by now, she's not going to stretch it out in the next four years. it's just going to become worse and worse. she wants to make america great again. it's going to be much better than making america whole again. >> all right. so a little bit of back and forth getting a little bit of flavor for the general election. what do you think?

almost like a kinder, gentler tone. >> i'm not sure he wears that well. i was watching thinking, where is the, i'm waiting and want to be your nominee. >> he wanted to make a joke. he wanted to make a joke. i had that feeling. i'm like, here it comes. >> you usually say it. >> but he showed restraint. >> yes. >> that's the new donald. >> you like it? >> what i liked as a pr nerd is looking at how the three front-runners handled their speeches last night. they were very distinct, different ways to handle it. i thought cruz had a very good speech. had he a big crowd there and it was written exactly to give him the boost when he wanted them and the applause when he wanted them. i thought he sounded really good. >> get a room. >> yeah. come on. >> i thought that donald trump -- the tone that a lot of

people have loved for eight months didn't love. i thought, i could listen to that a little bit more. i also think the republicans have made a mistake over the years on overpromising on things they could never deliver and i don't mean on big tax reform or things like that. i'm talking about things that you could get the obamacare repealed by shutting down the government. >> uh-huh. >> and there are people who cheered from the sides because it was great for ratings and never going to be possible. we all knew that president obama was never going to sign a bill to repeal obamacare. >> i wouldn't have known -- >> if i could finish this thought. i know you need to move on. it could be that somebody like donald trump comes along and all of a sudden compromise is not the dirty word that was slapped on ryan knows for all of this time. they are like, if we want to get a tax reform, maybe we need to get to the middle of it. >> can i reiterate that?

now they need a compromise. >> one thing donald trump is talking about compromise and that's refreshing and it would be good for the republican party instead of trying to shut down a government for planned parenthooded with a 75% approval rating. >> the people, the anger that is there, they feel like the establishment class has made a lot of things like obamacare. >> who was cheering on ideas like, you can shut down the government and repeal obamacare which we knew was never going to happen. that's my point. it's refreshing. >> i'm agreeing with you that it is refreshing. >> he will w. it's good to know that that is the case now if you were against shutting down the government plan before, you were called all sorts of names. >> let me just say that what strikes me -- we were talking about establishment background. i'm still interested in what

senator marco rubio finally scored his first victory last night winning minnesota but he didn't win elsewhere. he's still confident, though, he's going to win. >> no matter how many states it takes, no matter how many weeks or months it takes, i will campaign as long as it takes and wherever it takes to ensure that i am the next president of the united states. >> and he is still keeping up his new line of attack on front-runner donald trump. >> just five days ago we began to unmask the true nature of the front-runners so far in this race. five days ago, we began to explain to the american people that donald trump is a con artist. we are going to send the message that the party of lincoln and reagan and the presidency of the united states will never be held by a con artist. >> charlie rose of cbs challenged rubio for his attacks last night. he thinks the senator is

insulting trump supporters. >> donald trump had a good night and many will say when you call him a con artist, you are criticizing the people who are voting for him. >> con artist. i don't deny that there are some people that have been taken by his message. look what happened in virginia and virtually every other state that donald did not sweep. he's a con artist and conning people into believing that he fights for the little guy. >> i don't know. i don't like it. i like rubio. i don't like that. i think as a prosecutor and con artist, straight up criminal, put him in jail forever and throw away the key. he keeps saying it and it's getting repetitive to the point where it's becoming problematic and a lot of people, say he were to become the nominee, you want to get all of that support and aggregate it and people are saying, what are you saying? i'm being duped by somebody?

there's a negative connotation there that i think charlie is hitting on. i think rubio should be talking about why he should be the one. >> are the negative attacks working on trump? >> the first question for marco rubio is what else is there to do? because he didn't stoop to this level before but he wasn't getting any traction. he does this, he gets attention, we're discussing it. i think he's saying something that is on the mind of many republicans, not to mention democrats. they think trump is basically a carnival barker and he's got a lot of people entertained and distracted but there's no reality in terms of what he is promising these people. >> what i think he would say, i think what he was trying to say last night, he was trying to close the gap. not in the sound bite that we showed but in the last few days before super tuesday, he was able to significantly close the gap in virginia to be right behind donald trump. if you look at the exit polls last fight, late deciders,

people who weren't already dug in for their candidate trump, cruz, kasich or carson, late deciders went for rubio. also, virginia is a very interesting state. it's now a purple state. it used to be a red state. georgia is going to go republican no matter what. virginia is this must-win state for republicans this year. and it's a different look and feel and in that state, donald trump did 7% better than rubio with men and rubio did 7% better with women, millennials and independents and moderates. virginia is a must-win state. rubio is making the case that he can try to close that gap. >> and swept one of 11. to use a metaphor, a guy walks into a bar, gets sucker punched and punches the guy back and gets arrested by the cop. the soccer punch is donald trump beginning this low-blow affair

when it started, talking about mccain, mocking his suffering as a war hero, talking about carly fiorina's face, fiorina's face, if i can remember her name, talking about a guy's disability. all of these things started well before marco went darko. this happened. by the way, you know who is insulting their followers most? donald trump. in that interview with jake tapper, when he started to waiver on the kkk stuff, why? perhaps as rush limbaugh said, he was worried about alienating his voters. >> it was an earpiece. >> as promised, can we do the math? i love doing the math. this is camera six. okay. the remaining delegates in the month of march, 830 left. 459 are proportional. 371 are win or take all. here is the percentage of the proportional votes that trump and rubio and cruz has got so

far. if you apply that to these proportionalities, here's what you have. trump is leading every single win or take all states. the polls have been spot on straight through with the exception of iowa first. he ends up with 582 delegates by the end of march, added to his 319, he finishes march with 953 votes. delegates. that's 77% of the way. if you do the same math for cruz, he gets 151 proportional. he doesn't get any of the win or take all. that gives him a total of 377 at the end of march. and then you go to rubio. rubio is 77 proportionals. 59% of all delegates would have been awarded by the end of march. trump will be at 77%. you're not getting there via ted cruz. you're not getting there via marco rubio because he can't get

there statistically. donald trump has new york and he has pennsylvania, win or take all states, on the calendar in april and that's another 160 votes and that puts him over the threshold. >> the hope for rubio and cruz is somebody gets hot quickly. >> it doesn't matter. >> yes, it does. everything doesn't need to be proportional. in the win or take all states, somebody gets hot and starts racking up these win or take all states and suddenly they can push the numbers and even in the numbers, as you add them up, trump is only three-quarters of the way there. >> trump has won it -- even though i'm an english major, trump is one in three in close primaries where republicans can vote. the next ten, eight are closed. >> he's 77% -- >> i know. but he's not there. >> cruz is 30%. he's not getting it and rubio is not either. >> it opens the door to what is now being discussed widely, which is a brokered point that

the other two can't get the nomination. >> yes, they could come together and then you get the brokered convention and in the republican party you have pledged delegates, about 500. what happens if they say, we don't want trump? >> we have to. by law they have to vote trump. >> no. the pledged delegates, i'm talking about people who are like rnc officials or elected officials. >> right. >> i was agreeing and listening and being very interested and i believe colorado did something where they didn't want to obligate their delegates or something. that's frustrating and confusing. >> they are yelling at me. we've got to go. our take on hillary clinton's huge victory last night and we'll check in with ed henry, coming up.

and then we saw what happened, barely winning iowa and lost in new hampshire. wins big in nevada and south carolina and then last night had a very big night. she's got a rally going on behind me at the center in new york city because she wants to pivot out of super tuesday and say this campaign is going national if she doesn't believe bernie sanders can keep up. guys? >> he did win four states. >> swept four. it clearly looks like she's focused on bernie. is he done? should he say, see you later? >> reporter: no. he's going to stick around. winning four states is better and i'm not saying if he should or shouldn't stay in but if you're bernie sanders, why would you get out? you're raising more money right now, number one.

number two -- >> ed, you get out because you're not going to win. i mean, come on, it's almost the same delegate math on -- it's worse on the democratic side than on the republican. what are you doing, going to spend some donors' money? >> reporter: well, mathematically, you're right. i think hillary clinton has taken command of this mathematically but with proportional delegates, even when you walk away with delegates, maybe he wants to have a bigger voice at the democratic convention in philly in july. that's up to him. not me. >> juan williams? >> i thought the biggest victory was massachusetts. i thought bernie sanders was going to win massachusetts. it's senator elizabeth warren's home state. she's the heroine of all liberal democrats at the moment. she has not endorsed. what does it mean for hillary clinton to win massachusetts? >> you know, i think it does mean a lot.

here's why. bernie sanders virtually gave up the south because he knew she had a big edge with african-american voters. the clinton camp, frankly, in private, are scratching their heads why massachusetts. he desperately wanted that state. it's obviously near new hampshire where he did well and near his home base of vermont which he won last night. hillary clinton played there as well and beat him. they feel very good about that in the clinton camp. >> kimberly? >> hi, ed. i think it's a good reason for bernie to stay in. he's got all of the cash, right? he's got a tremendous amount of cash and can only bode well for him going forward in the future with this movement he's created and also there is a that nasty little investigation that she's facing with the e-mail server. you never know what could happen. >> well, you raise a good point here, kimberly, which is what vice president joe biden and all of these other democratic

up against donald trump in the general election? television commentator tabitha smily suggests black america could get on the trump train. something tells me if donald trump is indeed the republican nominee, it might be a miscalculation for democrats to assume that black voters are a lock for their nominee, even with the first black president and barack obama both campaigning for her. so the question is, gregory, do you believe that tavis smiley is right or wrong? >> i think he's more right than people think. it's about alienati. if you said what would you rather be, a blm activist or someone like donald trump, someone who is successful in business? i am willing to bet that most

black and white men and women would prefer the latter. i think the republicans could do better in outreach. however, it's hard for the republican party to do outreach when you are fearful of being humiliated or marginalized or mocked for doing it. that's why you see a lot of republicans shying away and don't do that kind of thing. maybe it was rand paul. >> rand paul gets a pretty good reception. >> yes. i think it was romney. rand paul did as well. he went to howard university and the like and delivered what greg said about, you know, don't you want to be successful in your life? and i was commenting to dana about the politics of this because i was having an argument with someone we know well who said, if donald trump can just

get like 20%, 15% of the black vote, more than this romney gro that's all it takes. >> that's a lot of ground to make up. it's not easy to do. however, i think tavis smiley is good to listen to because he's tapped into the question, what is going to be different? in the exit polls, republicans said like by 90%, they want an outsider in the election. okay? democrats will say they want somebody with experience. but could donald trump actually convince them that their life could change and there is a trajectory for something bette.? >> i think it's going to be terrifically difficult. you don't have a black candidate at the top. you don't have barack obama running. >> that's good for the republicans. >> here's all you need to do.

if barack obama was such a great president for the african-american community over the last eight years, now why is the poverty in the african-american community gone up under president obama? why has unemployment gone up? >> wait. hold on. i've heard this. >> the only group, the only group, not whites, not hispanics, not asians, the only ones to have a lower median income is an cfrican-americans. >> bottom line is, he's understanding that there is opportunity there. you have to at least try. you can't just say, well, that box is checked. you have to be able to get out there and try and secure that vote because tavis smiley is sitting on that vote. there's a struggling middle class in this country and they want jobs and lower taxes and they are looking at him as

as a symbol of submission. pity when the alpha goes beta. they become your jacket holder, a tail between their cheeks. christie is now the reluctant thug who did the dirty work. he took people out like rubio. his only way out. earning accolades from daddy. but he's still sad. not the only one. many men are reduced and happiness predicated on the attention for papa. for christie, his first love is bruce springsteen. at least trump let's him hang around in the rear. but this is a choice between principle and survival, individuality and survivism. he certainly will not be the

last. so kimberly, trump put him out there on purpose, correct? why? >> why wouldn't he put him out there. chris christie has a tremendous amount of support, a lot of donors. >> how did he look out there? >> i think he looked fine. he's out there. whatever. that's his choice. i don't know. i think he's a man of accomplishment. >> i'm talking about him being back there. >> you were bad-mouthing him and bashing him. >> i wasn't bad-mouthing him. i was talking about how unusual it was. >> the mockery was widespread. he had a vacant stare. six papers came out. >> the manchester union leader is not owned by the group.

>> i think a lot of people in the gop establishment said what happened to chris christie. >> he's entitled to endorse whoever he wants but it looks so bad, the optics. >> i think that's why he did it. everyone is thinking, chris christie, where is he going to go? i think it's smart on trump's part. >> that is true. >> and even if chris christie might have just been -- the looks could have captioned anything but it's hard to be standing there and you don't have a role and the speaking go long time. especially for a press
