12:01 pm
helped engineer his climb to the top of the republican presidential field. that's what a senior aide with the trump campaign says in a statement trump spokeswoman says the campaign is great follow corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future. it comes hours after gq published an article, claiming lewandoski regularly screamed at her and made her cry. the magazine reports one outburst came after hicks claimed she wanted to leave the campaign and return to her old pr job at trump tower. according to the article, quote, lieu -- lieu want do you said to hix, you made a bleeping mistake. your bleeping dead to me. he says i don't recall she specific incident. he don't know why trump fired him and said he still supports donald trump and it was a privilege and honor to be part of the campaign.
12:02 pm
you may remember police arrested lewandoski a couple of months ago and charmed him with battery after a reporter accused him of pulling her arm and bruising her. lewandoski denied hurting the reporter, and prosecutors then dropped the case. one trump adviser responded to corey lewandoski's firing by tweet, quoting, ding-dong, the witch is dead. donald trump is clarifying comments he made about the orlando terror attack. here's what he told a conservative radio host the day after the shooting. >> it's too bad that some of the young people that were killed over the weekend weren't -- didn't have guns attached to their hip, frankly, and where bullets could have flown in the opposite direction. >> today trump quoted, when i said that, if in the orlando club you had some people with guns i was obviously talking about additional guards or employees. the presumptive nominee still facing opposition from the never-trump movement. organizers say a thousand g.o.p.
12:03 pm
insiders took part in a conference call last night to hammer out a plan to change the convention rules and deny donald trump the nomination. we'll have more on that in a moment. first to john roberts live at trump tower here in manhattan. john, any more details on the whole lewandoski firing? >> reporter: trace, depending on who you talk to at the trump campaign you get different stories. the official version is that this was merely an amicable parting of the ways, that they have reached a point in the campaign where they had to do some shuffling and corey was not the best person to lead the transition in the general election campaign. the story you get from the troops on the ground, on the front line, is this was probably the final battle, the trump game of thrones, the power struggle that has gone on for months between corey lewandoski and pal manafort, the delegate wrangler for the convention in july.
12:04 pm
for the third party, that he just could not work with lewandoski anymore. me guy was just getting in the way, not let can manafort do what he need to do to get the campaign on the right track and if things did nodjack, manafort said he would be gone. that's when trump's children stepped in particularly ivanka and this son-in-law to say we can't afford to lose map afort. he has -- manafort. he has more experience than most of the people in politics these days put together. we need to have him on the campaign and the only way to keep him on the campaign is to get rid of lewandoski. and that is the unofficial but from the troops on the frontline standpoint as to why corey lewandoski is no longer with the trump campaign, and by many
12:05 pm
counts, many people inside the campaign are not crying a lot of tears he is gone. >> that's expected. so what next for the trump campaign? >> reporter: obviously he has to do some work to get this ship righted. if you look at the poll numbers they have been going the wrong way. a new monmouth poll shows him trailing hillary clinton nationwide by seven points. by eight points in the important battleground states. even utah is up for grabs. donald trump saying over the weekend he is going to campaign in utah, and a republican has not lost utah since lyndon johnson won it for the democrats in 1964. and for the most part, republicans win that state with a margin of anywhere between 30 and 52-point. the fact that utah is competitive is a sign there's trouble here atrium -- at trump tower. they have to make sure they keep corey lewandoski in somewhat good standing because he's the chairman of trump's new
12:06 pm
hampshire delegation and has again on record saying that he is going to do everything he can could make sure he delivers every delegate from the granite state to donald trump in the convention "game of thrones" has nothing on the terrorism campaign. >> thank you. the g.o.p. strategyity and fox news distributor, you heard john say you have these battleground states, an eight-point lead for hillary clinton has to be concerning. >> the map is really interesting because i don't think of the traditional lines, like the campaign, which is not that traditional with trump. so you have utah, georgia, arizona, traditionally reliable republican state but polling out of pennsylvania shows trump well within the margin of error, doing very well in key states like ohio. so i think hillary clinton clearly wants to run a 50-state strategy. she senses vulnerability in the trump campaign. but i do also see the opportunity on the other side for trump to get the reagan
12:07 pm
democrats largely populating the rust belt states on his side, to put states like pennsylvania and potentially wisconsin in play. >> it's not time to panic for the trump campaign but look at the mix of lewandoski and was it really a paul manafort and lewandoski and manafort came on top. >> i think john roberts was right to classify this as a power struggle. anybody observing the campaign has seen that. late in the game to seal up the delegate battle. you can't have a tail of two campaigns. while corey lewandoski was an excellent tacticianer, he had a hard time transitioning, and there was pressure for the trump campaign to begin to organize for a general. so this is an important reset. >> an orbit reset but all along trump has been saying this is not your conventional campaign. not going to read teleprompter and not going to raise now. enough he is reading the
12:08 pm
teleprompter and this dustup with lewandoski being out, is it a signal he is about to say, okay, we're about to run a very conventional, republican campaign? >> i think it's a combination of both. there's this kind of idea on those who observeolitics, has to be one way or the other. i think trump is going to create a hybrid and we know trump will be trump. the important part its for him to get the traditional aspects over the race, the fundraising, party apparatus in line as well and that's something manafort has a lot more experience with, and if you look the polling, the monmouth poll, where trump is losing support are among independents independents and actually maintain the same share of run as hillary but with women and independents he is very vulnerable and that's because he hays not made that pivot from a republican primary audience. >> now you have trump saying really this thing starts after the g.o.p. convention. he is eight points down in
12:09 pm
battling ground states and baning the idea it's going to start in earnest at the end of july. that puts him way hind the eight ball. >> definitely concern he has yet to run an ad. hillary clinton has had tens of millions of dollars in critical states but attachment trump can make up for that with a little of the free earned media he gets. at this point what he has to understand, and i think people around him are beginning to understand, changes need to be made because you cannot rest assured these large groups of donors and activists who have yet to see trump make this post in a meaningful enough way -- -- you have what it takes to win a general election. >> do we start to see it today? with the firing of loon down -- lewandoski does the change take place today. >> it's an evolution, and it's not as dire as some of the polling seems to suggest. if you look at the real clear average, hillary clinton has not gained so mump.
12:10 pm
it's that trump has actually lost a lot of that support. so some will be easy to get back if he reassures the public he is running the right kind of strategy. think you'll see it implemented slowly in time. and it's not a panacea to fire a campaign manager but an opportunity to refocus into the right direction. >> as britt human was saying earlier, this is late in the game to fire one of your main guys you. say this is transitional and happens a lot in campaigns. seems to be late in the game. >> it's not ideal but better now than after the convention which would cause more damage. >> we'll find out. tony, good to see you. hundreds of delegates want the right to vote for anyone they choose at the republican convention next month, and that they should not be bound to vote for donald trump. that is according to the "washington post." it reports a group called free delegates held greens call and have a thousand supporters and claim rules that bind some delegates to the outcome of their state's contests are unconstitutional. the donald trump says any attempt to take the nomination away from him is illegal.
12:11 pm
let's get live now to blake burman in washington. what else are we -- the anti-trump republicans trying to accomplish here? >> reporter: year told about a thousand members of the republican party talking here about activists, even december dels, joined in, in a conference call last night to discuss the process of potentially unbinding delegates at the republican convention next month. the current expectation right now is all bound delegates have to vote on the first ballot based on their local results, which easily clears the way for a donald trump nomination. however, this group says they're looking to influence the conventions rules committee by having them set up what would be called a moral conscience clause. i asked a leader of the movement why they think they would have any success at stopping trump,
12:12 pm
considering countlet groups have failed. this person admitted to me it was a, quote, uphill battle. that's the way it was put to me. but they also are arguing they feel they're getting some momentum here. >> it is an uphill battle and a long shot, but donald trump is still going to respond. what's he saying? >> absolutely. trump over the weekend called this attempt everything from illegal to a hoax, but the house speaker and convention chair, paul ryan, tried to put the issue in the laps of the rnc and rules committee members. listen here. >> number one they can't do it legally. number two, i worked for one year and we won all of those delegates. guess almost 1600. >> not my job to tell delegates what to the do or not to do or weigh in on things like that. they write the rules and make the decisions. all i want to make sure is it's done above board, clearly, honestly, and by the rules. >> trace, this does appear to be an uphill battle. a spokesperson for the rnc called the efforts to undermine

the gunman in the worst mass shooting in american history called 9-1-1 from inside the gay nightclub saying, quote, i'm in orlando and i did the shooting and i pledge allegiance to isis. according to newly released transcripts of phone conversations the shooter had with police during the standoff, and seems to warn that similar attacks would follow and told polices, quoting, you're going to see more of this type of action going on. investigators say the gunman also claimed to have a car rigged with bombs outside the club, saying, quote, you people are going to get it, and i'm going to ignite it if they try to do anything stupid. investigators say they never found any explosives. the fbi is refusing to release the audio of the calls, and the feds at first only released a partial transcript. it omitted the shooter's references to islamic state terror groups and leaders.
