saying they grilled her for seven minutes about her e-mail and at one point he asked somebody in the audience, i believe, a navy vet to ask a question of former secretary clinton and here's her question that she got from him and a bit of her answer. with a new excuse. >> secretary clinton, how can you expect those such as myself who are entrusted with america's most sensitive information to have any confidence in your leadership as president when you clearly corrupted our national security. >> you know and i know classified material is designated. it is marked. there is a header so that there is no dispute at all that what is being communicated to or from someone who has that access is marked classified. and what we have here is the use of an unclassified system by hundreds of people in our

government to send information that was not marked. there were no headers. there was no statement, top secret, secret or confidential. >> that goes against everything that we all saw in the fbi investigation that she did receive and send classified information. but she keeps sticking to that. >> she dodged the question. because the fbi found 110 e-mails contained classified information. >> that and's the problem. you can have a credible questioner but if the moderator, it's certainly not matt lauer's job maybe. but if they do not hammer on the facts, we're never going to get the answers. they were simmering in the green room, heard that, said this. >> paraphrase ronald reagan, there she goes again. she came up with yet another new e-mail excuse. let's review the bidding. it's getting complicated now.

first she said there was no classified information on my server, fbi says that's not true. then she says no classified information at the time, also untrue. then she says nothing marked classified. also untrue. now she comes up with a new excuse, there was nothing with a classified header. that all classified information has a header. first of all, that's not true. and law says she's required toe protect that information whether marked or unmarked. the fbi director said she should have known. second, if there were classified information on her server without any headers, how did it get there? the way it got there was she and her staff took the headers off. classified information can't just appear. it has to be entered in. >> that's right. he makes a great point. we talked about it. brian remembers this. it was about a year ago, we were talking about how it was revealed in one of the e-mails we saw between hillary clinton and jake sullivan where hillary clinton told jake sullivan to take the headers off.

so there was an instruction with her inner circle, hey, take off those headers. that way she can go out on stage on the intrepid and say there were no headers, because her staff took them off. >> her trouble for e-mail scandal, her trust issues with the voters, this is why donald trump is doing better and better in the polls. lindsey graham who ran against donald trump in the beginning as you remember, he has come out and said that trump is getting better, you can see a more disciplined message. if he can hold it together for eight more weeks, he thinks he can win. >> might be donald trump's number one critic and first critic on the right. >> right. donald trump was asked about some of the things he's said. in the past, he said i know more than the generals when it comes to beating isis. is that true? here's the question and the answer. >> so let me read some of the things you said. i know more about isis than the generals do. believe me. is that the truth? >> the generals under barack obama and hillary clinton have

when she discovered josiah was able to spell out messages of faith on his ipad. her experience detailed in her new book called josiah's fire. autism stole his words, god gave him a voice. we're joined right now. i started this and i'm getting tears. tell me about your son and what you've gone through. >> he was developing typically for the first about two years of his life. then all of a sudden over about a 3-week period, he lost eye contact, he lost play skills and stopped responding to his name. we thought we were completely losing him and what had happened to him. when you get that diagnosis of autism and you hear no known cause, no knowncure, lifelong and you're staring at a 2-year-old boy, suddenly you wonder where is hope when there is no hope. >> how did you find your hope? >> we went through all sorts of

things, all sorts of therapy. we threw ourselves into everything we could possibly do. medically, there's not a lot that's available. we did biomedical treatment and therapies. really, it was the breakthrough that we had doing a particular method that for about a year i had been working with him and then all of a sudden one day, even though he had kind of marginal success up to that point, i was using the children's bible to read him a lesson from. i was reading about how jesus healed the blind man. i said josiah, what did jesus he-e-a-l or pla-l-a-y with the blind man? he's nonverbal at this point. he chooses heal. then i said, okay. let's spell heal. i had the ipad up with all the letters and so he presses g and he was -- he presses h. he was missing it. actually, he presses g and then

o and ends up spelling god is a good gift giver. >> wow. >> his first ever independent sentence. i had never given him those words. >> what did you do? >> i thought i was on candid cam rachlt i thought i had cracked or is this real. it was amazing. it was a moment where i really believe and felt that we had a divine experience happen. >> it's amazing that he didn't speak and now all of a sudden he can read and he can write and send you messages on his ipad. >> the great thing about an ipad, everything that he writes is saved. everything he's ever written is saved on an ipad. by now, it's like hundreds and hundreds of messages that some are just normal everyday things that he wants ice cream. but actually, he started writing these beautiful wisdom words and poetry. things that are extremely profound. that really has been the most amazing thing for us. not only has he been able to

weren't happy. >> you're not supposed to recommend policy even at the highest level. however, humans being what they are, if you are briefing with the most classified secrets, you will have an opinion about the direction that the united states is taking. >> can i ask you about the sexual assault question. are you glad that was included? >> no, i'm not. that was a tweet that was brought up over three years ago. and i think when you see what donald trump was saying, that the ratio is incorrect. you have 26,000 people bringing up some claims of sexual assault or sexual harassment, he was saying, look, the ratio isn't the same. it's less than 300 people prosecuted, the numbers don't add up. once again, i think people are misinterpreting what he's saying. i got what he was saying. i brought the conversation up again in terms of how to combat it. >> it was amazing in a wide open forum how matt lauer had the sexual assault stats handy when i don't think even our brain room would have gotten them that quick.

most. and donald trump has an advantage. 50 to 35. why does this matter? >> what it comes down to is enthusiasm. we have seen that this in the poll that donald trump voters are more enthusiastic about getting out to vote. if you're a democrat and you're not that enthused about hillary clinton and then you start hearing more about the clinton foundation as well as the fbi -- or her private e-mail server and you don't like what you hear, that could potentially mean that you want to stay home. you don't want to go out and vote, not excited. >> a lot of people would say that when donald trump was airing a lot of ads in virginia, like hillary does with him, that would push that number even higher. let's look at the male vote. this poll shows that donald trump -- this is his greatest advantage. 54-32. what do you think? >> well, it could be a general gender breakdown as far as the candidates go. but i also think that donald trump seems to lead with sort of a stronger rhetoric. giving the appearance of a little bit more of leadership that could be a reason why men are more inclined to vote for

donald trump. so that could potentially be a reason. >> so when it comes to the efemale vote, clinton has a 53-38 lead over donald trump. how does he cut into that? >> she's running as the first woman president and that helps with the young, single women voters. that's where she's reaching as well. i think he improves his numbers by staying on message. being more of a disciplined candidate. i think his tone could be off putting to women. so that's important for him to continue to stay on message. >> right now losing almost every battleground, but not by much. could that change? >> that could change. look at wisconsin, particularly as a battleground state. i think if he continues to do what he's been doing post convention. or at least post that rough spot post convention staying on message, giving some of the substantive speeches he could do that. >> lisa boothe, thank you very much. still ahead, donald trump slamming president obama and

i think under the leadership of barack obama and hillary clinton, the generals have been reduced to rubble. they have been reduced to a point where it's embarrassing for our country. you have a force of 30,000 or so people, nobody really knows, but probably 30,000 people and i can just see the great -- as an example general george patton spinning in his grave as isis we can't beat. >> so that was donald trump last night in the forum on nbc. and at which time a lot of people said, uh-oh, he call out the generals, what is donald trump the civilian doing? to put perspective on that from the military perspective, lieutenant general michael flynn. was he right? >> he's absolutely right. there's a severe disconnect between this white house and frankly the president and our military. i mean, there's a lot of frustration within the ranks and there's a lot of frustration i know in the senior leadership

about what we're not able to do. one of the things that we cannot ever -- i mean, there's no enemy that's unbeatable. and what we have right now, is we have over 4 1/2, 5 years of fighting isis now as though they're some unbeatable enemy. there's again an enormous frustration. frankly, this business about reducing them to rubble, you look over the past eight years of generals that have been moved out of the service for whatever reason -- >> for example? >> for disagrees or just the lack of being able to push a particular strategy that we know that, you know, that can lead us to victory. you know, guys -- i mean -- >> give us some names. >> general mccarron and general mcchrystal, flynn -- >> rubble yourself? >> yeah. so this business about -- donald trump has enormous respect for our military, for our military leaders and he also said last night for our intelligence professionals. i know i have been in a couple of these intelligence briefings

that have been in stark contrast to the policy decisions we are seeing coming out of this white house. so this is a very dangerous time. and frankly, one of the comments that hillary clinton made was when she pulled a card off the table saying, you know, i'm not going to put any boots on the ground. i mean, quit telling the enemy -- we have become the best enemies in the world because we constantly -- >> why does that bother you? why does it bother you? why does it bother -- >> telegraph what we'll do. >> why does it bother you she won't put the troops in the ground? >> it doesn't make any difference whether we do or not. in warfare you do not want to telegraph or be predictable as to what you'll do or not do. >> what's the problem -- you said we can beat -- >> absolutely. absolutely. >> is the administration not listening to what the generals are telling him to do? >> yeah, it's a very narrow strategy and frankly, the policy and the strategy that has been directed and approved by the white house is what we're executing right now. it's taking forever.

we are in this sort of perpetual conflict. we can't afford it. about two days ago, a report came out that showed that we have spent $6 trillion in the last 15 years in this war., it' $6 trillion. that's coming out -- two days ago that came out. we have to stop this perpetual war that we are in. let's go owin and -- let a go win and figure out what to the day after is the more important thing and that's where hillary clinton in her going in to -- you know, her support of the current policies in the middle east, really pushing for libya, i mean these places are a disaster. we have a fire raging in the middle east in north africa that's bringing all sorts of problems in the refugee crisis, this immigration problem into europe. europe is having severe problems and we'll have our own problems

here if we bring in another 600,000 that hillary clinton wants to bring in. >> 400,000 in syria -- >> hundreds of thousands are streaming into europe. we have 20,000 begging to get into here. >> yeah. we don't know anything about the backgrounds. i mean, so we have to be very conscious and very cautious about what it is that we do and we begin to bring these folks into this country. >> well, one of the things you mentioned a moment ago, trump said there was something jaw dropping that he didn't realize before, but he said he could by the body language of the briefers what they were presenting was not essentially to the president. the president was making a contrary decision based on his ideology rather than perhaps the scenario that presented itself. >> yeah, so the intelligence briefings we have been given were very professional, and the intelligence briefers they represent a large body of our intelligence analysts around the

world, they were very good. the interesting thing is that, you know, intelligence professionals will present really, you know, what is going on. >> just the facts. >> exactly. just the facts. what they believe is going on around the world. and the issues that we touched on in both the first two intelligence briefings have are very, very serious and they present the next perils the next president will deal with. they brief you but they don't make the policy decision. they don't make the decision as to what we'll do about it. it starts at the white house, starts with the president. i will just it is here and tell you they're in stark contrast to what we're seeing. so the dangers -- >> so donald trump came out and said, i read their body language was he correct? >> he's correct. >> because the critics say you don't don't get that -- >> you absolutely do. the questions that were asked by donald trump they were very good questions. they would say that's a decision for somebody else.

i don't make that. this is the intel folks that were briefing us, those aren't decisions that we make. we present the facts. >> it's all top secret information, you give them that information so when they do take office that they have a -- they're prepared. donald trump -- you were talking about hillary said we won't put troops on the ground. that's her strategy. donald said if i win, i don't want to broadcast to the enemy exactly what my plan is. do you agree with that? >> absolutely. we have to stop being the best enemies in the world. we tell -- we say everything we're going to do. i mean, most recent one was just probably a month and a half ago, maybe two months ago. now secretary as defense said we'll send another 525 guys in. he actually sat in a briefing and said we'll attack from this city, we'll attack from this city. when we go into mosul -- i mean, this is warfare. >> right. >> this is not about a basketball game that you can walk away. >> lives are on the line. >> life and death decision, quit telegraphing what we'll do on the battlefield. >> well, the facts on the ground

are we're picking up land against isis, they're being forced out of isis and in iraq, iraq is getting back ramadi, fallujah and soon mosul. is there a story inside that story? >> absolutely. we don't have enough time to talk about it. yesterday's town hall down in philadelphia that donald trump spoke to, he talk about four -- essentially four points to go after them militarily, via cyber, financially. he's talked about the oil and things like that. they're bringing in $1 million to $2 million a day, isis is. i believe most importantly, attack this ideology, like we attacked communism and naziism. we are not allowed to describe this enemy the way they're -- they actually are. so when somebody says, you know, who is it that you're facing, hey, we're facing a radical islamist enemy, and they have grown, they have expanded tremendously. >> so has iran.

iran -- they're charged to take back the iraqi cities. it's criminal. >> what did you think of -- there was no header on it? >> yeah, unbelievable. i mean, you know, she -- i thought the questions last night were very fair. very fair, and when you're explaining something like that, you're wrong. >> is she wrong? >> absolutely. >> is she lying? >> she is -- is being about as dishonest -- like the one guy that asked the question in the first part of it, like he said, hey, i would be -- i would be in jail. >> the navy vet. >> yeah, the navy vet. it was a great question. some great questions last night. i would be in jail for a tenth of what we're talking about here. so, you know, i mean, either we have laws or we don't have laws. either we follow the policies and the guidelines and the rules we have or we don't. you can't have somebody who wants to be commander in chief or president of the united states that says, hey, i'm sorry. >> right. >> i got it. i accept your apology. but there's a consequence. >> but your excuses don't fly.

also military helicopter pilots, right? >> well, my younger sister laci was in the airborne with me and my sister kelly is still a c-130 pilot in the california air national guard. both of my pilots are my parents -- my parents were civilian pilots as well. >> my word. gosh, what a wonderful family, serving our country. you're part of flying security for president george w. bush. you got that call the morning of, right? that this is a top secret mission. what happened? >> so it was one of the last missions that i flew in afghanistan in 2008 in december and i remember it was supposed to be my day off. they told me, no, we have a mission that we need you to fly on. they wouldn't tell me what it was about, but they said i would be glad i was flying that day. so obviously that interested me and i was all right, let's do this. when i came in for the mission brief that morning i realized we were flying aerial security for air force one as they flew into the air base. so all of the air space is closed exempt my team that was there.

hundreds of people in our government to send information that was not marked. there were no headers. there was no statement top secret, secret or confidential. >> nbc did a fact check, newt. they said to that question she was dodging the question because the fbi has found -- that we know of at least, 110 e-mails containing classified information and she has a new excuse. there was no header up there. >> she's such a liar it's disgusting. when the fbi says to her, what about the paragraphs that had "c," "c" meaning classified she said, oh, i didn't realize that meant classified. i thought that was just a part of organizing the paragraph. >> yeah. >> where's the "a" and the "b"? >> the fact she had 2,300 different documents that had "c" in the document itself. meaning classified. and she routinely tries to lie her way out of this. and of course it comes back up

again and again, because it is so patently false. >> there was a lot of things that went on in there. i think both candidates have work to do before september 26th and they had a dry run about how to answer the most controversial questions so we got a preview. a quick thing. along the republican critics that donald trump is stuart stevens. he said if president obama praised vladimir putin like trump did an compared him to george bush he would have been asked to drop out of the race. do you agreewith that? george bush said he looked i believe to putin's eyes and saw his soul. i believe what trump said that putin was brilliant. he said that's fine f you want to say i'm brilliant, why would i complain? listen, someone is to call me brilliant, you know i'm going to get in a fight over it.

>> brian wants you to tell him how good he is at cornhole over and over. let's talk about the debates -- >> brian is a brilliant writer about history. >> yes, he is. we have 18 more days until the first debate. we're so excited to see what really happens. how is donald trump preparing? i know you have compared him to babe ruth. what do you mean about that and how is he prepare? >> i think it's important to remember, babe ruth was a great game player, the best all around baseball player in history, he was both a pitcher and a home run king, but he was not a great practice athlete. he got a lot of extra adrenaline when it was a real game and something was at stake. trump is like that. he doesn't practice a whole lot. it's not his thing. but he listens carefully. you could tell that last night. you can tell it in his national security speech yesterday which was i think was very impressive and very thoughtful. and my guess is that what you'll get is donald trump's going to come in ready, but he's going to come in as donald trump.

relaxed. cheerfully looking forward to it. hillary will prepare, memorize, study. have 27 different strategies lined up. she'll practice with 19 different people. none of that will matter. who are you going to recruit to pretend you're donald trump. it's impossible. there's no other donald trump other than donald trump. it won't work. >> mark cuban is waiting for the call. >> he can try to do it. as interesting as cuban is, he doesn't have the speed and the assertiveness that trump has. we can send 16 republican candidates to chat with hillary and explain to her what it's like to try to take trump on head to head in a debate. >> good point. >> absolutely. >> of course, he's the standard-bearer for the republican party. the last one is mitt romney and mitt romney is part of the never trump organization, movement let's say. he sent this tweet out, newt, yesterday. i want to get your impression. he said, i hope voters get to

see former gop governors gary johnson and bill weld on the debate stage this fall. of course they're not running on the republican ticket. they're libertarians. so what is he saying? don't vote for trump, obviously. >> look i feel sad for mitt romney. i mean, this is a guy who for a long time in massachusetts claimed not to really be a republican when he ran against teddy kennedy he said he wasn't for bush and reagan in the 1980s, he wasn't for the contract of america. then for a brief, shining moment he was very republican. then it didn't work. now he's back to not really being a republican. i mean, he must have a sad, confusing life in that sense. i think we're down to the simple choice. do you want hillary clinton to be president, pick a radical supreme court, bring all the corruption into the white house or not? if you don't want her to do that, you only have one alternative that makes sense, that's donald trump. everything else is silly and in this case mitt romney is just being silly. >> do you blame the never trump movement on the right if donald trump loses? >> no, look, i think donald

trump has an obligation to campaign well enough to win. i think based on how the polls are move, donald trump's going to win. at that point, hillary clinton can blame whoever she wants to. i think the great shock to the old republican establishment is that there's a new national populist movement that's real. that that movement carried 37 primaries for trump. that that movement wants to change washington, not accommodate it. what you're getting are the old washingtonians. the folks who are comfortable with the old order who do feel psychologically closer to hillary than donald trump because he's a major disruptive force. he wants to actually change this city and all of the folks who are in the never trump movement are kind of in -- gee, i have done all right here. i feel good about it. when i go to the club i meet my friends even if they're democrats. that's really proof that trump is real. that you have a never trump

democrats trying to bail out hillary clinton from her e-mail scandal releasing memos from former secretary of state colin powell. >> in the e-mails he outlines ways to skirt the government systems recording her communications. >> what does this mean? ed henry is talking about what this means for hillary clinton's credibility because this came out through elijah cummings. welcome back, ed. >> reporter: thank you. good morning. the democratic argument about the advice to hillary clinton about e-mail has been shifting to fit their narrative. what's new this morning, democrats on hill have now released an e-mail exchange between powell and clinton just two days after she took over as secretary of state. powell revealed he hooked up a

personal e-mail to communicate with friends without it going through state department servers. yet, remember, powell never set up his only personal server for official business. yet, clinton seemed to try to use powell to exonerate herself. she said that powell counselled her to use a personal e-mail service. well, he balked last month, telling "people" magazine that the clinton camp was trying to make him the skate goat. the truth is she was using it for a year before i said what did, now we see that memo. elijah cummings appears to be trying to pin it on powell by releasing these e-mails and he said in a statement last night, quote, this e-mail exchange showed that secretary powell advised secretary clinton on how to bypass requirements to preserve federal records although secretary clinton has made clear she did not rely on this advice. powell warned clinton in the e-mail if she used a blackberry for government or personal use,

it could be subject to recordkeeping laws. powell said be very careful. i got around it all by not saying much and not using systems that captured the data. but the most important point here to stress is that powell's talking about using his aol e-mail account for unclassified messages. when it came to classified messages, he said he used a desk on a secure state department computer. that is a lot different than the system that hillary clinton was using, guys. >> well, ed, maybe she didn't read that part of the note. she was very selective in the part she decided to implement. >> picking and choosing which advice -- >> exactly. >> thank you, ed. very interesting. look forward to see if general powell has a response or a clarification. coming up, the candidates going jab for jab over who has more skeletons in their closet. >> he clearly has something to hide. >> people who have nothing to hide don't smash phones with

even after this scandal, all the things that happened, they still would rather go to the v.a. hospital or v.a. chin inlinic te private. i have been all over west virginia, i talk to them and asked them. some are upset but the majority want to stay with the v.a. system and we're trying to improve it. i understand what's going on. >> well, what'd you make of donald trump's suggestion last night that, you know, the system is not perfect. doesn't work. hasn't worked in the past. and if you're unable to get service after a number of days or weeks or months have a card, go to your local doctor or local hospital and you get better. >> brian, steve and ainsley, we have that. it's called first choice. we're doing everything we can to give flexibility. we don't have one v.a. facility, they get waited on very quickly because they use other entities and other government run health clinics. we're doing everything we can. the veterans should get priority treatment anywhere they go. i believe that in my heart and i

believe that the democrats and the republicans believe that but most of them would like to go to the v.a. they want us to improve it and we're doing it. but if there's an illness we can't cure, they should go to the private sector and go to the closest facility you can go to get healed. >> now, senator, i was out in arizona and i interviewed those who have sued the v.a. that are complaining because their loved ones died on the waiting list. they would prefer to get treatment at the other hospitals but they couldn't because it was expensive -- >> money out of their pocket. >> i respectfully disagree about that. >> no, no, arizona it was really -- it was the head waters of all the problems there. it was the problem. i hope hope that's been corrected or being corrected. that's why we came one first choice because of the situation in arizona so they could go somewhere else. >> and something you want is

respect for the miner, coal miners. 3,600 job losses in the last year in west virginia because of coal. there's a war on coal and it's coming from the white house. >> there sure is, brian. i have said that. i disagree, i disagree wholeheartedly with the president's energy policy. you have to take the all-in energy policy. that means use everything you have. this has been accelerated because of the white house's overreach and the environmental overreaches. we have to find a balance. the rest of the world is using fossil. if you want to help clean up the global climate, i want to do that. then you better find the technology to do it. don't deny it and they're going to follow us because we have harmed our economy. they have just about crippled west virginia. six of our counties are in the deep depression right now. we're fighting to overcome this. our miners are coming. we're fighting for the miner's protection act which goes back to 1946 with harry truman saying that this is such an important product for our country, these people have delivered the energy that's built our country, fought both wars and won them.
