i think it is a serious problem for them and it is something that i'm considering talking about more in the near future. it is also becoming clear now that the trump campaign is very aggressively trying to narrow a 20 point deficit among female voters revealed by a fox news poll released last night because the campaign rolled out a brand new ad about women's issues starring his daughter ivanka. >> my father will change outdated labor laws to support women and american families. and child tax care. allowing women to support their families and further their careers. >> trump is also turning criticism of his pre dawn tweets about former miss universe detractor alicia machado, including one encouraging followers to seek out a sex tape. for those few people knocking me for tweeting at 3:00 in the morning, at least you know i'll be there awake to answer the

hirn kn hillary knows she can't win so she continues to bring up those controversies. >> if he didn't take the bait. if he just let it pass this wouldn't have happened. >> right. but i think he's frustrated. i know the campaign is frustrated and i'm frustrated and many supporters are not at him but at the media for constantly giving this person carte blanche to say these unsubstantiated claims over cnn, fox. every network possible. >> the media holds her to account. they don't give her carte blanche. she could have more press conferences that's for sure. >> there's been more coverage of miss machado than of the three men on sean hannity all three miss universe candidates and all saying glowing things about donald trump and how he thepd hem etc. and i think the campaign would like to see fair coverage -- >> the he didn't tweet these, they wouldn't be covered.
2:22 pm
do you think it is possible to start tweeting policy instead of these personal attacks? >> sure. again going back to the debate you saw him really making an effort to speak about jobs, his vision for america and that sort of policy argument. it was clinton who again continued to go pack to these personal attacks. she wanted this whole week to be dominated by personal attacks. she ginned up stories about cuba and everything in between. donald trump attacked her also this week, you know, about her foundation and other substantive things but we're just not seeing the same level of coverage. >> a lot of analysts say he missed a lot of opportunities in that debate. what do you expect in the next debate? do you think he'll be more substantive in terms of policies? as he says bring up monica lewinsky and everyone else? >> in you judge people fairley and equally if he brings up some of the women hillary clinton has silenced and bullied after they were involved with bill clinton over the years i think that

some new reports from syria today. nearly one hundred children have been killed in aleppo since the cease fire collapsed there tw weeks ago. new air strikes targeting rebel held areas in the northeast part of that city reportedly hitting one of aleppo's remaining hospitals. it is a dire, horrible situation of untold carnage. russia meanwhile warns the united states not to intervene.

tensions between the u.s. and russia over syria those diplomatic exchanges do go on. they spoke on friday and this comes as the "new york times" published wh it kams to be leaked comments from kerry in the u.n. last week saying he pushed military force to back --. but of course obama disagreed. russia joined exactly a year ago tipping the balance of the war in favor of assad. it is now warning the u.s. against trying to remove assad from power. international monitoring group say the russian air strikes have killed around 3,000 civilians in syria. the u.n. says today in addition to that, over 00 have died in the last couple of weeks alone. a third of those are children. it is urging for a pause in the fighting to let vital aid in. >> kitty. thank you. just so horrible there.
2:33 pm
thank you. >> it really is so horrible and with much focus on the conflict itself, sometimes the human toll gets overshadowed. this video from another syrian city under siege. a one month old baby girl pulled from the rubble of her home. rescuers say they searched for hours and consider it a miracle they found her alive. she was found crushed between floor and ceiling and the man who found her understandably crying as he holds her. while another paramedic attends to her. 14 others killed in that attack and the fate of the girl's family is unknown. ben collins is here a u.s. army special forces veteran and green beret. he served three tours in afghanistan. ben, it is so hard to watch that video. i want to get your reaction first. >> well, look, i mean anybody that is a parent. i have three kids. a7-year-old daughter, a 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old boy. and i don't think there is any
2:34 pm
parent or anybody alive that just can't watch scenes like that and just feel absolutely torn apart at what they are seeing. and this isn't a natural disaster. i mean that is kind of the point of this thing. we know that this is happening. this isn't a mistake. this is what's happening in the middle of a war. you have upwards of 50,000 children killed in this, in the last five years. 50,000. and that is part of the 400,000 civilians that have died. this is a humanitarian crisis that is of a magnitude that we haven't seen since world war ii. >> and according the united nations, some 275,000 citizens are under attack in eastern aleppo. yet the russian and syrian governments are saying their warps are only targeting isis fighters in eastern aleppo. so how is it from how you see it, how is it that so many civilians are being killed? >> well, look, if they can identify from the sky, you know, who's an isis fighter and who's
2:35 pm
a rebel fighter that is simply trying to take on assad or just take on -- i mean, the absurdity is incredible. and this that report kitty said she only something like 30 doctors are left in aleppo. that is city of about 250,000 civilians. so equates to about one doctor for every 8 thousand citizens. the different, not only have they stepped up the number of air strikes but the munitions. bunker-busting bombs. a lot of the civilians trying to stay away from the fighting have gone under ground and that is how they are hitting the families and hitting these kids. the children that are even still going to school. that is where they set up the schools. they are in underground. there is absolutely no ability for the russian military to discern which is which. and just a week ago in fact that they hit a u.n. aid convoy that
2:36 pm
was carrying medical supplies. you are talking about blood and bandages for transfusion they hit. they killed twenty people but there are just no medical supplies left. >> and russia is saying it is doing all it can together with the syrian government to help the u.n. arrange for those weekly pauses needed to stop the fighting in aleppo thoin order deliver the humanitarian goods. do you see it that way that russia is really cooperating to stop the fighting? >> no. absolutely not. you have to look at the priorities here for everybody. and the only priority that exists, at least for russia and vladimir putin is to assure that assad stays in power. that is it. and you are talking about a country that has a 10% essentially shia majority that has a rule over 75% sunni population. so you are talking -- i mean -- what vladimir putin and what russia is -- the only thing they care about is maintaining their influence over a country that would have access to natural gas
2:37 pm
and pipeline. it is about control. that is it. they don't care about civilians. when we -- we accidentally struck a syrian military installation not too long ago and i think we killed 70 syrian soldiers and that was an accident and right away they went to the u.n. and filed a complaint. >> i want to get this in before we go. so the state department is threatening to end all diplomatic talks with russia on syria if the attacks on aleppo continue. so is that enough? how should this civil war in syria be handled? >> no, of course that is enough. we've been listening to this. and the problem is nobody believes this anymore. this is the same place where president obama said that there was a red line in the sand if assad used chemical weapons. this is the same place where at first we said assad had to go. now it is maybe assad doesn't really have to go. and kerry just the other day saying look, our patience isn't
2:38 pm
limitless. what is the limit? you are talk about 50,000 children. how many kids washing up on the beaches? >> -- >> the reality here. to be honest if i had an answer for that, you know, it would be something. but you are talking about a political solution which nobody is yet to discuss, which is the removal of assad. that is the whole reason the rebel groups are fighting u. you have to defeat isis. you have to stop the rebel groups that are fighting. the humanitarian cost. economic. syria has absolutely been destroyed. the gdp has collapsed. most of their country lives in absolute poverty. so how do you fix it? you are talking about diplomatic, military, economic. and the united states, if we've learned anything we have no business thinking we can solve it. we can't. but certainly from a humanitari humanitarian effort i know we can do something there. but we have to back our word. when we say we're going to do something. we have to do it. >> and ben collins. we'll see you again. thanks. >> thanks arthel. >> and polls showing donald

2:45 pm
she's hit the campaign trail with him already. now we're told she's planning to increase the campaign appearances in the last month leading up to the election over the next 40 days? will all this strategy work? betsy, do you think ivanka can soften mr. trump's image with women? or that image just baked in the cake? >> it is very much an open question. i think especially when you talk about her influence with women it is easy to over state how much clout she has. just because she's female doesn't mean women in the demographic are going to like her. and 18-34-year-old women, in that area where trump really has a lot of room to improve. only 28% actually had a favorable view of ivanka. while upwards of 40% saw her unfavorably. so there is a possibility she doesn't have quite the clout with women the campaign might need at this point.
2:46 pm
that said at this point she's a star and very well respected within the campaign. there is a good chance she'll be able to be an asset. we just can't overstate -- >> tiffany trump. who's donald trump's younger daughter. 22 years old. congratulated from upenn. we're told she's going to be hitting the campaign trail. she's been kind of hidden till now. do you think that will work or will it have any effect with millennials? >> my suspicion, my gut is this isn't the kind of thick that actually moves millennial voters. the candidate who had the most look with courting millennials over the last year or so was bernie sanders who was often cantankerous sounding very old gentlemen and folks young were completely enchanted with him. and now hillary clinton seems to be suffering with millennials in some ways because so many of the young people who liked bernie sanders don't like her. so just because, for instance, folks like ivanka and tiffany are young and might seem relatable doesn't necessarily mean the conventional wisdom is right and millennials will like
2:47 pm
them. the reality is kids were aged 18-34, first time voters care more about the demographic than who's talking about them. issues is really important. and it will be something certainly to keep an eye on. >> what does trump do about what he's said about women is this calling fat pigs. zusing slobs and alicia machado who say says calling him a bigoted misogynist and all all these other terms. does this get out of women's minds somehow when they vote? or how does that impact the voting booths. among women voters mrs. clinton is 23 points ahead of donald trump. you have just over a third of women supporting him. i mean, this is a huge issue in this campaign. how does he get about it? >> you know, i don't know it's necessarily fixable for him. the reality is he's had three
2:48 pm
different teams in the upper echelons in his campaign and over the course of the last year and change, that he's been running for office, this is the way that he's talked. you can't take donald trump and make him stop being donald trump. it is not possible. theoretically his campaign manager could take a phone away but that doesn't seem like a realistic outcome. at the end of the day the reality is that he is who he is. and he's going say what he wants to say. so that means that in trump tower there are a lot of spence with the two debates coming up. because thus far nobody's really been able to discipline him. and it could be seriously damaging him with female voters. >> do you expect him to change? >> you know, i think a lot of folks have lost money betting that donald trump is going behave differently. it is like every couple of weeks we have conversations about oh my goodness, donald trump final in control. final getting more disciplined.
2:49 pm
i don't think he'll change. thankfully hillary clinton's team was able to coax a better performance out of her than trump's team was and you don't have to ab math geek to understand he lost the debate according to all the credible polls. trump is trump and i don't know that's necessarily changeable. >> we'll see. we'll all be doing it again. thank you so much as always. >> sure thick. >> and with less then six weeks to the presidential election donald trump and hillary clinton still struggling to win younger voters. why many millennials are not supporting them. plus more evidence that hackers are trying to interfere with the election. what they are targeting and whether they could effect the outcome. ugh. heartburn. sorry ma'am. no burning here. try new alka-seltzer heartburn relief gummies. they don't taste chalky and work fast. mmmm. incredible. can i try? she doesn't have heartburn.

dangerous category 4 storm. maximum winds, 156 miles an hour. the big question tonight, could it impact the mainland of our country? we have the latest track coming up. first up, donald trump campaigning in the swing state of pennsylvania today, scheduled to hold a rally there next hour. the real clear politics average has hillary clinton with a slim lead over her republican rival after a rough week for trump following his first face-off with hillary clinton, with a series of twitter tirades bashing former miss universe. that has even some close allies cringing. our new fox news polls now put mrs. clinton ahead by five points after trailing by -- just by one just before the date. i don't know what that prompter says. let me keep going. the second debate is just a little over a week away, as you

well know, this time in a town hall format. peter doocy, who is traveling with the trump campaign, is in pennsylvania. we will get to him a little later. >> as we wait for peter to come on with us, hillary clinton meanwhile has been gaining ground on donald trump in the latest fox news poll. the democratic nominee also coming out ahead when voters are asked about the issues of honesty, temperament, we hear about that a lot, and other measures of this presidential race. for more, let's go to christian fisher to explain more. >> reporter: about an hour ago trump posted on twitter that he won the debate but the ratest fox news poll shows most people who watched the debate would disagree. 61% of registered voters polled said clinton won. only 21% say trump won. 12% said it was a tie. according to this poll, clinton beat trump in the debate by 40 points, that's a huge margin. but trump surrogates like mike huckabee are continuing to blame

the mainstream media for trump's perceived loss. >> donald trump has never, ever, i don't care what he says, what he does, he would have the most magnanimous performance ever but the mainstream press is never going to say wow, donald trump mopped the floor. >> reporter: let's look at how the debate performances translating into voter preference. in a four-way matchup, clinton is ahead by three points, up from just one point in mid-september before the debate. statistically, they are still tied. but in a head-to-head matchup, when you take gary johnson and jill stein out of the equation, clinton's lead grows to five points. just two weeks ago, this same poll had trump ahead by one point. so it's pretty clear that clinton is enjoying a post-debate bump in the polls but the consequences of the first debate become especially clear when you look at their honesty and temperament ratings. 67% of voters polled now say clinton has the right temperament to be president, up eight points from before the debate, while 59% say trump does
3:04 pm
not have the right temperament to serve as commander in chief. when likely voters were asked how comfortable are you with trump as president, 47% said they were not at all comfortable while only 18% said they were very comfortable. so in this next debate, trump needs to do a lot more to convince voters that they can be comfortable with him in the oval office. eric? >> thanks so much. arthel? investigators have now interviewed the engineer whose train smashed into a station in new jersey. the crash killed a young mother on the platform and injured more than 100 other people thursday morning. and urine tests awaiting on the engineer. laura ingle is live in hoboken with the latest. >> reporter: apparently we are not going to learn what investigators talked to the engineer about, at least not yet. they say they are not going to be releasing any of the transcript summaries until all of the interviews are complete with all of the crew members. there's no word on when that's

going to happen. of course, a lot of people want to know what this engineer had to say but we are all going to have to wait. we want to give you a picture of what it looked like inside today. we were able to glean a little bit of a view. here's what the crash scene looks like. it's all boarded up with plywood and plastic, really guarding the investigative efforts going on behind that now from the public view. but we were able to have limited access with our cameras around the terminal today which allowed us to see some of the work being done to repair this terminal which of course received so much damage in thursday's crash. the ntsb also said environmental and structural issues are still preventing the removal of the train from the station. it's clearly still a mess in there. when the train came barreling into track number five thursday morning, the canopy, the ceiling came crashing down which has been a major factor in the cleanup and safety of workers trying to get the data recorder and cameras from the front controlling cab of the train.
3:06 pm
those remain inaccessible to investigators tonight. now, the first data recorder from the last car in this crash has been taken out. it was extracted and has made its way to the recorders manufacturer's facility in kentucky. the ntsb announcing tonight they have personnel in kentucky there and are supervising the attempted download of that information. the ntsb also saying that investigators have obtained video from other trains that were here at the hoboken terminal thursday morning to see what those cameras captured from the incident. they also say they have found no signal anomalies on the tracks leading to the terminal but a full signal study won't be completed until the train is actually pulled out of the terminal, which we have been told will be at least seven to ten days. that's how long the ntsb expects to be on scene. as far as the remaining victims being treated in the hospital, earlier today there were close to a dozen. a lot of people were released today. we are now hearing that four remain in the hospital and one is in icu.

arthel, back to you. >> we will get you back to the c campaign trail now. peter doocy joins us from pennsylvania, where a very large crowd is awaiting donald trump. peter? >> reporter: very large indeed. we just learned for the first time tonight donald trump is really going to hit hillary clinton for some comments she made at a february fund-raiser that we just found out about because of some leaked audio where hillary clinton told some wealthy donors at the fund-raiser that she thinks the only reason anybody would ever support bernie sanders, who you remember gave her quite the run for her money in the primaries, is because they were a child of the recession who lives in their parents' basement which could be problematic coming out right now because a lot of sanders' supporters are of course still deciding between clinton, trump, johnson and stein. so we got our hands on a partial copy of trump's remarks tonight where he accuses clinton of
3:08 pm
casting away bernie sanders' supporters as basement dwellers and adds this. quote, in short, if you are not a die-hard hillary clinton supporter from day one, hillary clinton thinks you are a defective human being. how on earth can hillary clinton try to lead this country when she has nothing but contempt for the people who live in this country. we also have new proof tonight that the dust still hasn't settled from monday night's debate between trump and clinton because trump just tweeted that quote, the so-called commission on presidential debates admitted to us that the audio and sound level was very bad so why didn't they fix it, he asks. looking ahead to the next debate it does sound like trump is getting ready to hit hillary clinton where nobody has, at least not to her face, on a debate stage. he is talking more and more about her personal life, telling the "new york times" in an interview published today that quote, hillary clinton was married to the single greatest abuser of women in the history of politics. hillary was an enabler and she attacked the women who bill clinton mistreated afterwards. i think it's a serious problem

toward jamaica and haiti right now. the storm has weakened but is still a category 4 hurricane. matthew expected to hit cuba and the bahamas early next week, sustained winds over 155 miles an hour. will it strike us as well? janice dean is live in the weather center with more. what about its path? >> this is the strongest hurricane that the atlantic basin has experienced in almost a decade, and we could see catastrophic results as it moves very close to haiti. a lot of folks are still suffering from the 2010 earthquake in portions of western haiti and we are watching jamaica as well as the bahamas so category 4 storm, a very strong category 4. 150 mile per hour sustained winds. now we have hurricane warnings for the western portion of haiti as well as all of jamaica and hurricane watches in effect for cuba. now, the steering. what is going to happen with this storm? some of the reliable forecast models keep it offshore as it makes its path over cuba into
3:19 pm
the bahamas perhaps as a major hurricane or will it come closer to shore. those are the questions we need answers to. we will certainly get that in the next couple of days. but we really need to watch this storm as it continues its northward trek and it started to move northward as of the last advisory. so there's the track weakening a little bit as it moves over cuba. that's expected. but then it could strengthen again in the bahamas. look at the timeline. this is thursday, still talking about this storm system. if you live anywhere from florida up to maine you need to be keeping close watch over this. two reliable forecast models watching these very carefully, in good agreement as it looks like it moves over eastern cuba and then into the bahamas. gfs and the euro, pretty good agreement. this one is a little faster, the gfs but watch as we head into friday coming close to the east coast, just 12 hours ago the euro was near bermuda so coming into a better agreement here. we could see some impact
3:20 pm
certainly late next week along the east coast. there's a future radar, looking at jamaica, obviously very vulnerable here and haiti as well as cuba and the bahamas. again, the water is very warm here so we are expecting the potential for a very strong category 2 or major hurricane. forecast wind gusts at the very least tropical storm force we think for portions of jamaica and haiti and again, so vulnerable here, 70% of the population of haiti in this area are below poverty level. this could be catastrophic for them. our hopes and prayers that this somehow doesn't reach them in haiti but we are expecting we think to thread the needle between jamaica and haiti and into cuba and then going further, what will happen. but i will tell you the benchmark of hurricanes was hurricane hazel for portions of the carolinas in 1954, a major category 4 hurricane and you see
3:21 pm
that path is covering that right there. a lot of uncertainty in the days to come. we need to monitor this so closely. so dangerous, one of the strongest hurricanes we have had in a decade. we need to be watching this very carefully. >> that we will be doing it here and you will be doing it. our hearts and our thoughts with the people of haiti. they have suffered so much through these years. thank you, janice. >> of course. you know, we don't just shrug our shoulders when we see something that needs fixing. we don't get resigned or apathetic or blame other people and turn on each other to find scapegoats. we roll up our sleeves. we get to work to try to make things better in our neighborhood, our community, our city, our state and our country. that has been our story, the american story. since the beginning of our nation. and it is still going strong today. >> that's hillary clinton courting voters in florida, bolstered by her debate performance on monday. mrs. clinton spending time this

week in that swing state that has until recently been leaning towards republican nominee donald trump. now, the latest real clear politics average out of florida shows clinton with a razor thin edge over donald trump in a four-way race. mayor levine is here, the mayor of miami beach, clinton campaign surrogate. mayor, thank you for being here. >> thank you. >> i want to start here. peter doocy was just reporting that hillary clinton was overheard referring to millenials as basement dwellers and we have a response from hillary clinton that happened during an exchange on the campaign trail last week. in part it says some are new to politics, referring to millenials, completely. they are children of the great recession and they are living in their parents' basement. they feel that they got their education and the jobs that are available to them are not all what theyen visioned for themselves and they don't see much of a future. i get back to you.
3:23 pm
why is it that hillary clinton is having so much trouble connecting with millenials and can she provide them the future that they are looking for? >> well, i think she's not having so much trouble. what's going to happen now, when you look at the millenial young person who graduated or maybe is in college, they are saying what's best for their future. what's important to a millenial? number one, climate change. that's something secretary clinton has been all about. millenials are very passionate about making sure we are doing everything we can to make our planet more sustainable for the future. now, donald trump says it's a hoax from china. that's one issue. number two, when you are looking for college, you are a young person, you are in debt for college, secretary clinton is saying if your parents make a certain amount of money we will help you, make sure you go to college debt-free. that's important to them. >> pardon me so everyone can understand what you are talking about, that is that hillary clinton promises to make public in-state colleges tuition-free for families who make less than $125,000 a year. but as you well know, congress
3:24 pm
would have to approve that plan. >> but i think that they will. this is something which is very important to millenials, a lot of young people want a future. what's also important to them, a country which is together. not a country which is divisive. donald trump is all about racism and division and pulling us apart and secretary clinton is saying over and over again we are stronger together. i think this appeals to millenial folks. let me tell you, it's not so easy for them. >> yeah. apparently it's not so easy for mrs. clinton to relate to them. she's still having trouble. i know you did point out just now some ways you think that mrs. clinton can connect with them. let's talk about this. what about those people who say they just can't vote for hillary clinton? they don't like her, she's too much more of the same. what's your pitch to them? >> well, i think we are in a situation today where we have somebody who is eminently qualified for the position. she is qualified to be the ceo of the united states of america. we know she will do a great job. we know she will show up. we know she's disciplined and has the capability. the alternative is somebody we know is a fraud, who is not
3:25 pm
really a billionaire, who says one thing and changes his mind, somebody who thinks climate change is a hoax, who acts racist and says terrible, terrible things, is not a model for the nation. you look at these candidates, people in the middle will say you know what, i think secretary clinton is the right person for the job. it's going to take time. i think that's happening right now. i think during that debate, we saw that first-hand. one was fit to be president. one looked presidential. one looked like just a deflated reality tv star who has no business being up there. >> so mayor, i think what i just heard you say regarding the people who just say they can't go and vote for hillary, you are saying sort of what has become part of the conversation around the country which is i don't necessarily like her, but it's kind of like going for the lesser of the two evils is what i think -- that may or may not galvanize people to the polls. >> if you are undecided, look at the two choices. understand secretary clinton is the right person for the job and she will make our country, she will continue in a positive course and do the right things
3:26 pm
for our nation. donald trump is not fit to be president. i think people are seeing that. looking forward to the next two debates as well. >> you know, i understand what you are saying but even with a bit of a post-debate bump for hillary clinton, why then based on everything you just laid out for us, why do you think the race is still very competitive with just 38 days before the election? >> well, i'm not sure that has ever been a race that hasn't been competitive. unfortunately our country is very divided right now. i think whoever wins this presidency and i think it will be secretary clinton, i think it will be objective of that president to bring our country together. there's a whole long conversation of why we are divided but i think like she says, we are stronger together. i think that's the message of where we need to go as a nation today. >> mayor, before i let you go, you are of course the mayor of miami beach. there's a couple of new cases of zika reported in miami beach but in a new neighborhood. can you tell us about that? are you really getting a handle on this zika virus from spreading there? >> sure. absolutely. in the one zone which was our original zone, we did a series
3:27 pm
of things with our county, aerial spraying and things we had to do and there's been no additional cases reported. now, in the expanded zone, there's been no cases of individuals with zika but there's actually a couple of different pools that had zika carrying mosquitos. we are on it, we are fumigating, doing everything possible to make sure we reduce the mosquito count to the lowest level. we are very confident we have it under control. we will continue doing what we're doing. >> good luck. we want everyone there in miami beach to be safe. mayor levine, thank you very much. good luck to your candidate. thank you. >> thank you. well, planning to snap a selfie? really? as you cast your vote? it's illegal in half the country. back off. one reason some officials object to voting booth selfies, seriously don't do it and why they say the photos violate an important american right. >> i think it's important. >> i will take a look at that in a few moments. plus, differing views from two u.s. cabinet members about our syrian policy. this is the carnage there only gets worse and russia tells us to take a heek. now that fedex has helped us simplify our e-commerce,

comments. i think what secretary kerry has been trying to do so far unsuccessfully but very understandably on behalf of the syrian people is to put an end to the syrian civil war. that is not something that can be done militarily. it is something that has to be done politically and that has been our approach. >> we are joined by the former ambassador to the united nations, senior fellow at the enterprise institute and fox news contributor. the level of carnage, the reports out of aleppo are beyond comprehension. you have the barrel bombing of civilians in their apartments indiscriminately by russian war planes and assad's forces and mr. kerry's comments were leaked apparently to expose the dissension in the administration. why is this significant? >> well, i think when you see
3:35 pm
this kind of public bickering between two senior officials, two cabinet members, what it indicates is the smell of fear of disaster inside the administration. you know, you don't have to be holmes or brandeis to see the administration's syria policy has been a failure almost from the get-go, from the time of the arab spring in 2011, and now with really just a few months to go until the administration leaves office, john kerry on the one hand, ash carter on the other are looking to put themselves on record as saying hey, this isn't my fault. maybe somebody else's fault but it's not my fault. and i think it speaks to the incoherence of the administration's policy. that's nothing new. that goes right back to 2011, too. >> who is that somebody else? what do you think that somebody else should have done? >> well, i think obviously although john kerry didn't say it, he's talking about the
3:36 pm
president. he was one of three or four people who argued for force and somebody made a decision not to use it. i wonder who that somebody could be. look, we have had a misunderstanding of the events in syria again right from the outset of the arab spring in 2011. the view, for example, that we could negotiate with russia which has been the foundation under obama both when clinton was secretary of state and under kerry, the idea that the russians would negotiate in good faith to move assad out of power and move in a regime that all sides in the conflict would fiefind acceptable, that's wrong from the outset. it's never been the case. john kerry spent months negotiating a cease-fire. it was entirely predictable it would fail. it has failed. as ash carter so correctly pointed out in public. now we have only the rubble of a policy where one used to be.

which obviously goes to the conditions in syria which are a humanitarian disaster. >> two years ago or more, perhaps, we could have imposed a no-fly zone, bombed the runways, taken out the helicopters that would have stopped the barrel bombing and a lot of this destruction and horrendous death tolls we see now. what do we do now? the russian war planes are flying all around. we can't do that now. >> well, the series of mistakes that have been made over a five-year period, i really think it goes back much farther. i think there was maybe a theoretical case five years ago that we could have made a difference with the syrian opposition but the opposition itself is a crazy quilt of forces. some are effectively allied with al qaeda, al nusra. obviously isis has emerged in the meantime. there are press reports just this past week that the syrian opposition we have trained is allying more closely with extremists opposed to isis but extremists nonetheless. i'm not sure there is anything

we can do at this point other than continue to focus on destroying isis which whatever you think of the chaos in syria, is only going to spread more chaos not just in the region there but obviously in the united states and europe as well. >> meanwhile, finally, the poorer people of aleppo who cannot get out are being killed. hundred children, hospitals being bombed, humanitarian convoys being taken out by russian war planes and assad's forces. this is front page story in "the washington post." let me read you about this, about a family in aleppo. the bombings at night are the worst. there is no electricity so families huddle together in the dark, gathered in one room so that they don't die alone. listening to the roar of the jets and waiting for the bombs to fall. new bunker buster bombs designed to be used against military installations blasting apartment buildings that house families. secretary ban ki-moon has said that could be a war crime.
3:39 pm
those are russian bombs. will they ever be held to account? >> the answer to that is no. in large part we are in this circumstance today because for five years, barack obama misunderstood vladimir putin, didn't realize that the assad regime was critical to russian efforts to increase their influence in the middle east as america's influence was declining. this failure is not entirely due to barack obama but he is substantially responsible for the chaos and the humanitarian disaster we see in syria right now, because he projected weakness instead of strength right from the beginning. >> 500,000 people so far have been killed. that death toll climbing, no end so far sadly and tragically in sight. ambassador, always good to see you. thank you for your insight. >> thank you. >> very sad. well, there is some dramatic video from arizona this morning. we want to show it to you.
