11:01 am
he is in the first sunday show interview since taking the post. then, intentions ramp up for the us preemptive attack on north korea, we will discuss the president military options with one of the top national security voices in congress. republican senator lindsey graham. it is a "fox news sunday" exclusive. plus the president speaks about the violence in charlottesville. details to call the white supremacist. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of bigotry and violence on many sites. >> will ask our sunday panel whether the president's comments went far enough. all right now on "fox news sunday". hello again from fox news in washington. a war of words between the president and north korea keeps escalating. with growing concern it will
11:02 am
become a military confrontation. in a few minutes we will talk with mike pompeo, director of the cia about the situation on the north korea peninsula. but the president is dealing with another controversy. a white nationalist rally in charlottesville turned violent when a car ran into capture protesters killing one and injuring dozens. a number of republican leaders are criticizing the president for failing to condemn the white supremacist. kristin fisher is covering the president as he continues his time in new jersey. >> it is not so much with the president said it is what he did not say. on twitter and in person he never even mentioned the white supremacist that gathered in charlottesville.and the removal of a confederate statute. but the fbi and justice department have lost a civil rights investigation and the governor of virginia has
11:03 am
declared a state of emergency. one woman is dead and 19 others injured after a car plowed into a crowd of people came to protest against the white supremacists.they believe that james alex fields was behind the wheel and is been charged with murder and other chemistry to state troopers were also killed when their helicopter crashed while patrolling the protest. the president calling for unity and denouncing the violence. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms, this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sites. on many sides. >> so the president is declining to take sides while a growing course of republican lawmakers are urging him to call it what it is. senator cory gardner says mr. president, we must call evil by its name. these are white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism. but no one can accuse the president of not talking tough enough to north korean leader kim jong-un.

11:05 am
>> all of the news this week, that north korea cannot put a warhead in a missile. how close is the regime to being able to deploy a nuclear weapon that can hit the us mainland? >> i do not want to get into specifics but it is the case they are closer. they have been getting closer for two decades plus now. other leaders have not taken is on. the president is taking this on now.we have had united the world with sanctions against north korea. it is a 15 to zero vote. among the first times that they believe the correct answer has to be a day nuclear -- day nuclear eyes peninsula -- to understand the threat make sure we can deliver that.
11:06 am
>> he say close are we talking months or early talking years? >> is difficult to put a timeline. every time the testing of the missile or conduct a nuclear weapons test they develop expertise. it is fair to say they're moving towards that end and ever alarming rate. >> i want to pick up on that because there has been criticism that the intelligence community including the central intelligence agency has been surprised over and over how fast north korea is moving with the weapons program. there is a former un ambassador bill richards. >> it worries me because he should have been on this long ago. we were caught off guard and north korea was way more advanced than our intelligence told us. that is a massive intelligence failure that should never happen again.>> why were we surprised when north korea couple of weeks ago, we found out that they had this but why
11:07 am
were we surprised to learn that they could put a warhead on a missile? are those as richardson says, intelligence failures? >> with all due respect he is wrong. we were not surprised. most of this work, i have been doing is a handful of months now. the intelligence community has done remarkable work to deliver the progress that they have been making. that not surprising that both became before me now act surprised. they did nothing. the intelligence community has delivered a consistent message about kim jong-un, his capacity to develop missiles, his intent and so i do not think there is any surprise by policymakers that have been following the progress the regime has been making to put an icbm with a nuclear warhead. >> what is your psychological profile of kim jong-un? >> he is pretty isolated today. for the first coming of the
11:08 am
chinese and the russians. we are crating conditions for the leader to make it clear to him that it will be unacceptable to continue to develop the missile program. >> was your psychological profile of him? is a rational, disciplined, you tell me. >> i would describe him as rational. he responds to adverse circumstances. and has the trump administration, as they continue to put diplomatic pressure on the regime, i am confident that he will see that and the people around him will see that. it will become ever more isolated and we will get you the denuclearized peninsulas that we talked about. >> i want to play with the president has been saying this week. >> north korea best not make
11:09 am
any more threats to the united states. they will be met with "fire and fury". like the world has never seen. let me hear kim jong-un say it. he is not saying it. he is not to say much for the last three days. >> can you be sure how kim will react to statements like that especially those that call him out personally? >> the president has made very clear to the north korean regime how america will respond if certain actions are taken. we are hopeful that the leader of the country will understand them and in precisely the way that they are intended. to give him a place where we can get the nuclear weapons of the peninsula. it is that straightforward. from an intelligence perspective what is most important is that the communications are clear. the fellow who intensive fit pain on the united states of

>> are we confident that he will play your game? >> it is very difficult situation in north korea. >> how worried should people be? >> there is nothing imminent. we have seen much of -- we have seen what has been said. there is nothing imminent. the continuation, this is a very serious threat and we will treated as such. >> he said there is nothing imminent when you can only talk about from the united states side.he mentioned that there is nothing imminent from the north korean side? >> we have a pretty good idea. >> what is the idea? >> i cannot share with you the information we have about what is going on in north korea but make no mistake, the intelligence community is excellent work in understanding what is going on on the north korean side. it is a dangerous border. >> obviously there is huge concern and interest in people

of the us intervention in latin america, a us military option in venezuela creating huge uproar and what is the justification for this in terms of us national security? >> i will leave the defense department piece of this to secretary james mattis. i'm confident he can answer that. from an intelligence perspective we have watched in my seven months in office, a continued deterioration of maduro continuing to assert more power, inflict more pain on the people in venezuela. you can see the beginning of fissures amongst various groups and what i believe the president was trying to accomplish this week was to give the venezuelan people hope and opportunity to create a situation when democracy can be restored in venezuela and intelligence makes very clear that they maduro regime continues to put snipers and towers and do things that are
11:14 am
horrible, repressive and the american policy to work with the latin american partners to try and restore democracy. >> that would involve a military option for the us? i mean is a terrible war and i understand is a terrible situation but ultimately why is our problem? >> venezuela can very much become a risk to the united states. the cubans are there, the russians are they are. this has a risk of getting to a very bad place. america needs to take this very seriously. >> we cannot get the cia director of the program very often so i will take advantage of the fact that you're here to do a lightning rod for quick questions and answers we can cover territory. is it true you went to afghanistan last week and you left quite disturbed by the lack of confidence of the afghan leadership? >> no. the predicate to the question is correct i went to
11:15 am
afghanistan i did not leave disturbed. in a relatively short period of time we developed policies and wanted to talk about what the cia is doing there and how we can be a part of the good objective for america. >> after 16 years of war, why do you believe sending in more us troops will make a difference? >> the president will make that decision. we are presenting a wide range of options to the president. that cover a broad range of different alternatives so we can fundamentally change the trajectory of what is going on in afghanistan. >> what if we do not send more troops, what with that situation being afghanistan? >> it depends what other decisions are made alongside of that. their questions not only about the number of trips, capacity, the way we coordinate, how we bring in allies to achieve the directive. it is not just about us force numbers in the objective that
11:16 am
we hope to get to in afghanistan. >> before taking the job you a member of the house band on the committee. a federal judge just asked the state department to look again to see what emails were sent particularly by hillary clinton with regards to ben ghazi. do you believe we have gotten to the bottom of that attack and hillary clinton's role? >> i will leave litigation to the other side and pretty busy with the cia these days.>> the cia director let me ask you about a different one. this is more directly in your wheelhouse now. i assume that you have seen the unmasking request by members, officials of the obama administration. was there an effort by people in the obama administration to spy either on the trunk campaign or the trump transition? >> -- we will continue to make sure that they can perform their oversight functions properly. >> abusing all of the requests
11:17 am
that were made by the obama administration officials to find out when a trump person was caught up in servility front of the person was? have you seen those requests? >> yes. >> we provided that to capitol hill. >> but you will not tell us? >> there is an active investigation going on we will let them complete their work. >> does it merit the investigation? >> is a former member of congress i want to give them all of the headroom they possibly could want. >> finally, there has been criticism. that you are too political. instead of being the honest intelligence that the cia director always is, sometimes you try to bolster their views and opinions, policies of the president. her response to that? >> is fundamentally false. i do have biases. there is no doubt about that.
11:18 am
i will be aggressive and we met. will be the premier espionage organization in the history of the world. that is my only bias. >> in terms of this being too political? >> because the job we deliver truth to the president. i get a chance almost every day to be with the president and deliver the exquisite information. the cia and the intelligence, we do great work and he is very demanding on us to do that. when we asked for money gives it to us. he finds the intelligence community an important part of his capacity to deliver national security for the american people. >> director pompeo, thank you for your time please come back, sir. >> i will. >> is the president helping with the north korean situation or inflaming it? senator lindsey graham will

violence in charlottesville virginia during the white supremacist rally. the citizens of charlottesville today were having none of it twice. one of the organizers of the last two days if you want to go is in the news conference but the crowd ran him off. the citizens of charlottesville surrounding his microphone and him in front of city hall and took to chants, go home. -- tensions remain high and we have a fox news correspondent
11:23 am
in charlottesville right where they had the news conference yesterday. hello doug. >> fascinating how this develops. all the protesters in the people shouting shame, murder and go home all of that stuff. it materialized out of nowhere. by the time the press conference at 2:00 p.m. came around, they had surrounded all of the cameras here and shouted out anything that he might have wanted to say. they, just like us, with everyone in today's world monitors social media and kessler and spencer another white nationalist apartment to be here today which he did not show up, had announced they would be having the press conference. and so upon is our way of it. they may know when to show up as well. literally they ran him off. he exited to the left through the bushes accompanied by state
11:24 am
police officers but the crowd followed him right through the woods to an awaiting car. it was a very tense moment. you can see remnants of some of the protesters behind me right now as they spout slogans in various things. it was a tense moment. a little calmer than anything yesterday.well a lot calmer. and i have a theory that as to why it was calmer in why it did not erupt into total violence. it is because i think most of the anti-bomb protesters were not here. if so he would've been pummeled. also accompanying that the police kept a very close watch on everything. they infiltrated through the crown and disaster averted here in short. >> he made a point earlier today in terms of the police presence. is it stronger and more thoroughly in that sense deployed today trying to
11:25 am
prevent any other incidents later this afternoon? >> there was no shortage of police yesterday. they were here in force.no shortage today as the announcement of the press conference began to take hold. and if there was a difference i would say they tended to be more interest in the crowd and were prepared to react more quickly than yesterday. and as it turns out there was nothing being thrown, and no one being hit. they are on higher alert perhaps is a good way to put it. >> and of course no incidents. meanwhile the suspect, james alex fields from ohio was allegedly driving the car in the crowd that killed heather heyer. their reports today from the ap that his former teachers that he had an infatuation with nazis. he had infatuation with adolf hitler and apparently headed picture of hitler on his facebook page. information on the charges
11:26 am
against him as you await his appearance in court tomorrow? >> because he is a relatively young man, only 20 years old, he had to have been fairly well-known by his mother. she had to know what he was up to at least to some extent. the associated press tractor done yesterday and did an interview with her. in which she was somewhat dumbfounded of what her son was doing but perhaps she knows more than she let on. we are monitoring the situation and right now the way it goes when people are arrested over the weekend they will have a fun hearing on monday morning. we will see whether or not that will happen they have been responsive thus far. will be at the courthouse tomorrow in the event that he doesn't show up for a bond hearing. >> thank you. will have news on this and update about an hour and and a half from now at 4:00 p.m. eastern with julie banderas and
11:27 am
myself continuing coverage of the story. of course now james alex fields faces a second-degree murder charge, hit-and-run but has not been prosecuted yet. this is under review by the department of justice civil rights division. he will be in court tomorrow. meanwhile, there are tensions that continue in charlottesville.thankfully as of this afternoon on sunday, no more violence as we saw yesterday that toward the heart of what this nation stands for. we'll have more about an hour and and a half half from now or in one hour. we now return to "fox news sunday". >> the last report i know he will do that i hope that north korea and china understand and frankly he has no with a choice. >> want to turn to another subject as i discussed with the
11:28 am
director pompeo. out of the blue the president raised the possibility on friday of military options. what i assume is military intervention in venezuela. with the socialist regime of nicholas maduro. why would we want to get involved militarily and would congress support that? >> i have no idea why we use military force in venezuela. i know that if we do not send more troops to afghanistan it is going to fail in every soldier in afghanistan has an insurance policy against 9/11. i know that we have troops in iraq and syria to train people to destroy iso. we have groups and europe to prevent against graphic north korea and russian expansion. i have no idea why we would use military force in venezuela. i'm open minded to a reason but at the end of the day, our military should be deployed when there is a national security interest that can be articulated to the american
11:29 am
people. i do not see one in venezuela in terms of military force. >> let me turn to another issue. the president has been going after your republican leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell. raising the possibility that perhaps he should step down or at least not closing that off. here he is. >> get to work and let's get it done. they should have had this last one done.they lost by one vote. for anything like that to happen is a disgrace. >> is mitch mcconnell's job in any trouble ultimately as you decide who would be your leader, is his job in trouble and do the attacks help or hurt the effort to get sent all of the things that you have to get done in september? >> mitch mcconnell is not in trouble in terms of his members. we all like him and believe he is a good solid leader. all of us are in trouble as republicans were promising for
11:30 am
seven years we would repeal and replace obamacare and failing miserably. i do not mind the president being upset with us. at the end of the day, if we do not deliver repeal and replacing obamacare we are all going to be trouble. including the president. i do not want to go from repeal and replace two propped up. that's why have a new idea to grant all of the money back to state that they would spend obamacare. hope the republican leadership will embrace that in help me with that in september. if we move on and ignore the failure on healthcare, repeal and replace.we will fail miserably in 2018 and 2020. >> are just one last question about your health care plan which is a basically be federal rising giving the money to the states and letting them decide what they want to set up. have you gotten any commitment from senate leadership that they will bring this to the floor in september when you come back rather than moving down the subjects and how many
11:31 am
cosponsors do you have? >> i think my chief cosponsor, i believe there are 50 votes for this. i'm hoping to have 25 republicans to come out taking all of the money to washington and sending it back to the states by 2026 every state gives the same contribution. i think federalism is the right approach here. alexander will allow a hearing when we put together. there will be tremendous amount of pressure on leadership to take this up. i think mitch will but i want to stress again, for seven years we promised to repeal and replace. we just cannot move on. i think it would be a disaster and the president's right to call us all out.mitch mcconnell's job is not in jeopardy. but the future of the republican party is in jeopardy. >> senator graham, thank you. thank you for sharing your sunday with us. always good to speak with you sir. >> thank you. >> up next will bring in our centigrade -- we will talk about charlottesville.
11:32 am
11:34 am
into a crowd of counter protesters in charlottesville saturday. killing at least one and injuring 19. it is time now for our sunday group former speaker of the house, newt gingrich. a state department spokesperson, tran 25. former democratic congressman, donna edwards and tom rogan from the washington examiner. let's start with thoughts about the rally in charlottesville yesterday. the violence and criticism.
11:35 am
with president trump receiving for not calling out the white nationalist specifically. >> obviously the violence is not acceptable but what is more acceptable is the fact that the president does not name it for what it was. driven by white nationalist the kkk, white supremacists and neo-nazis. and the fact that the united states can do not say this out loud, instead, basically gives a green light to those who continue to perpetrate hate and violence in his name. and they say it decidedly that it was done in his name and support of his efforts to quote - make america great again. i think it is unacceptable. the republican leaders across the board spoke on and name to this violence and he could not. >> why do you think he did not? >> i think he used the people as part of his bait they stood out and said that they supported him and that they were doing this in his name. and what an american president
11:36 am
should do is stiff arm them. and say, i do not care what they say, if they support me. i do not support them and what they stand for. and this president of the united states failed to do that and he failed the american people. >> i think the president should speak up more clearly and i suspect today or tomorrow he will. i do think if it is fair to him the statement itself is pretty strong and condemning the violence. condemning bigotry.he talks very specifically about condemning racism. i would agree i think that clearly he should talk much more aggressively about it. i would also point out from a conservative perspective, even watching the rising tide of violence in the country. when the chancellor of us california birthday spending $9000 because they assume students will occupy his office, it tells you the pattern of this building and it is on both sides, it is dangerous, i am delighted that
quote
11:37 am
attorney general jeff sessions has sent the justice department team down there. everyone engaged in violence and and shows so should be locked up. violence is unacceptable. you can have free speech but no violence. >> i am going to put up a tweet at ivanka trump, the president's door to put out this morning. she says, for one, there should be no place in society for racism, white supremacy and neo-nazis. we must all come together as americans and be one country united.# charlottesville. it is interesting a number of republicans including ivanka trump have criticized the president what he failed to say. i will put up some of those. cory gardner tweeted, we must call this by this name. this was domestic terrorism. governor chris christie.
11:38 am
we reject the racism and violence of white nationalist. like the ones acting out in charlottesville. everyone in leadership must speak out. when you hear those, whether explicitly or not, it is pretty clear that there is in the president did not do enough. >> senator graham was actually pretty explicit we just spoke with him. we need to hear the president say domestic terrorism. and if you go back to ronald reagan or bob dole, leaders explicitly condemned the kkk, not the affiliated groups, bigoted groups, so they tried to align themselves with the republican party for this president has not. if it comes up three days later calling it domestic terrorism it will not have the same impact although i think it would be helpful for him to do. but i do not want to get anyplace in the country we are
11:39 am
equating violence on any side basically saying it is the same as bigoted and racist speech. because what i want to see happen, even if there was no violence yesterday, the president and his team should caught bigotry, hatred, these nazis. but by name. call out the kkk affiliated groups and not to this also morally equivalent which even some extreme and ambulance have on the left. there is no semblance and is to be made clear. >> tom, is this politics? clearly these hate groups are very small part of the millions of people who supported donald trump but they are a part of it. is the president unwilling to take them on? >> i think to a degree that is true and i think there is the element of the liberal protesters on college campuses. it is a huge problem. the issue is that i think from this idea of silencing speak as they do not like. from the right, this judgment
11:40 am
has to be identified as part of the right. there is a problem of the hatred against -- the president is the commander-in-chief.it is a really lesser play and is filling into but if you look at tradition, this was american service members, whether in the air above germany are on the land. they destroyed -- the president has the patriotic part against this. and he should have articulated why this ideology is so despicable. >> i want to pick up on that with you. we mentioned the missed opportunity has we remember in the 92 campaign, bill clinton had a moment with he distanced himself from a violent black rapper and said to a degree i am not going to be in the
11:41 am
democratic party is not going to be part of it anyway. he say listen i understand conservatism and problems with liberals and some of the problems he talked about on the left but there is no traffic. they will not be any relationship with that kind of speech and political belief. >> yes, he missed an opportunity and i think in the next day or two he will fill the gap and also let me point out. he explicitly repudiated the kkk. he explicitly did this. it is a falsehood to suggest the conservatism which believes in liberty has anything to do with nazi-ism. >> then why doesn't the president come out and say that? the fact is it took him days to repudiate david duke. now you are telling us that it is going to be a couple of days and he will come out and say we
11:42 am
should distance ourselves from the kkk and from white supremacists. this is not acceptable. >> first of all in his inauguration he said is unpatriotic to be racist, you cannot be good american and racist. >> and yesterday on the street -- >> yesterday said he is against all of those things. he is against - the one thing he did not say was i condemn white supremacists.>> we can do this during the commercial. it is pretty interesting but we do have to take a break. when we come back we have to get to our other big stories. the title and where we stand with north korea. and the president surprises statement that he is considering military options in venezuela. humana medicare advantage members. no, it's this john smith.
11:43 am
11:47 am
i am in the process of doing a series of papers and just looking at one nuclear event in one city, because i think we've gotten numb to how hard this really is and how serious it is. only cut off the supply petroleum, their answer was pearl harbor. and yes, maybe we can really squeeze him. then he has two options.we have no proof today and he would necessarily cave. i think we have to see this as a extraordinarily dangerous moment in history not like to see more on preparations on our
11:48 am
side to make sure that we minimize any chance of a single weapon. >> meaning antiballistic missiles. >> much more of that, much more civil defense.this is one bond in one city, that would be the most tremendous events in american history. >> do think we need to prepare for that? >> yes, sir. 100 percent. >> on that, donna edwards, i know a lot of democrats are upset with the president rhetoric this week and challenging kim jong-un. sometimes on the other hand you have had three presidents, two democrats and one republican that tried almost everything else. they had party talks, sending a secretary of the state over to pyongyang, sanctions, all kinds of things. we are closer to a nuclear armed icbm pyongyang than ever before.
11:49 am
what is wrong with this? >> i have been very disturbed by the rhetoric as well. but i do think we are at a moment where we may begin to think in terms of containment and deterrence. unlike we have before. and i hesitate giving a woman to quan and to run inside and hide is not an answer to a response for a nuclear attack. it is clear we have not change the defense is posture.the region and it is always at a high because of the nature of the threat from north korea. i think it is important for us to try and at least have you know the new sanctions have not even been in place for the better part of the week yet. i think the response from china was a helpful one to send to the north koreans. that they can expect help from
11:50 am
the chinese when they act offensively. but we are in a very dangerous moment. >> i want to turn to another surprising moment and that was the president's comments this week.i have discussed this with the cia director and with senator lindsey graham. that is the president volunteering, out of the blue raising a military option dealing with the maduro regime in venezuela. you have heard pompeo say absolutely makes dense, talks about castro, talks about other extremist groups and heard lindsey graham say it did not make any sense at all. >> it does not make any sense i suspect what the president is doing is asked do we have a plan for venezuela and of course yes we have a plan for everything. but when i think also might be going on is that a lot of the language on potential conflict with or be venezuela or north korea is targeted at china.
11:51 am
and i think with the president is trying to do behind the scenes is to tell the chinese weather it be the south and east china seas, whether it be nuclear programs, that if you do not deal with us on this, the consequences for your regional environment in your perspective of power are incredibly catastrophic. and in these debts, it is perhaps the one good set of these tweets. the unpredictability of the force that compels the chinese that maybe he is series and on any other level the united states does remain a world superpower. in the threat remains serious. >> marie, as a former spokesperson for the state department under john kerry, what are some of the military problems and diplomatic problems with us getting involved with a military option as the president put it in venezuela? >> i think there's a was zero chance we would get involved
11:52 am
militarily in venezuela. it makes no sense ended department of defense had to practically come out and say that. there is a very clear strategy for the whole national security team has in place. i think the president's off-the-cuff remarks this week - we have avoided sanctioning oil because doing so would probably drive prices appear so they are economic levers we can use with this kind of bombastic rhetoric that everyone knows really the solid policy foundation, does not help a regional situation that quite frankly is engulfed in flames, could have really serious impact to regional security. >> if you believe that this is just off-the-cuff and will not see as a going to get involved in venezuela, does that undercut his credibility when he is talking about a much more serious situation that we might get involved in like north korea?
11:53 am
>> 44 nations in the western hemisphere be unanimously, i think there is a real sense of isolation. my guess is if there is any meaning to this, if you decide you want to take on maduro we are with you. and i think that is our goal. you have the venezuelan military take of the cubans, kicked - kick out maduro. -- >> i would not encourage the troops unless they went in as part of an organizational of american states.a unified effort such as in the dominican republic and 65. >> thank you panel. come our power player of the week.
