>> monday, july 16th, this is an early of "fox and friends first". rob: the stage is set for the high-stakes helsinki summit. jillian: we are 3 hours from the face-to-face it down with vladimir putin. rob: the world is watching closely to see how donald trump handles several critical agenda items with election meddling at the top of the list. jillian: it is a busy monday morning. rob: we have a fox news team coverage live in helsinki, and henry and allison barber. jillian: kevin, what can you tell us? >> reporter: interesting
12:01 am
opportunity for the president, his perspective is easy to understand, you can't advance your agenda when it comes to world leaders you had past problems with unless you are willing to listen and talk and that is the cornerstone behind what we saw play out in singapore when the president met with north korean leader kim jong un and we'll see it again here is the pres. meets with vladimir putin. before telling you what we can expect on the schedule today the president had an opportunity to meet with finland's president and talk about the relationship we have with their country and the last opportunity for the two leaders to meet over the nato summit. listen to what the president said not long ago. >> highly respect your country and our personal relationship is very good and i enjoyed being with you a couple days ago.
12:02 am
nato has never been stronger and clearly was a little bit tough in the beginning and turned out to be love. really was great and everybody together and very worthwhile but appreciate your support and help and you treated us beautifully, thank you very much. >> the president pleased with the way he feels this country has been treated and earlier this morning we saw the pres. and first lady meeting their finish counterparts at the residence, a chance to soak it all up, an opportunity not just for the president to meet with b meant to solidify our relationship with finland, another great country in europe. just give you a lay of the land in terms of what we expect today but let me take you to twitter,
12:03 am
the president talking about russia at length and i suspect we will hear him talk about russia on twitter not just before the meeting but during and even after the summit with vladimir putin. is with the president said about russia, a relationship with russia has never been worse thanks to many years of us foolishness and stupidity and now the rig to witchhunts. that sentiment echoes the president's previous criticism of past leaders ostensibly for paling to do anything but play the same old same old card when it comes to russia but keep in mind critics said that is because russia is at the stabilizer across the globe. here is the schedule i was promising you. we expect the president to meet and go one on one, trump and vladimir putin, expanded bilateral before 8:00, this will slide depending on the schedule and then at 9:15 or 10:00 we expect the joint press
12:04 am
conference and vladimir putin, the world cup gathering will make his way for the meeting, third interaction with donald trump, this is the first bilateral and not sideline event we have seen at large international gatherings and we do expect trump and vladimir putin to talk about a number of issues including vladimir putin will look to get accommodation on sanctions we do not expect them to recognize the annexation of its neighbor. >> we will see. that is the question on crimea. election meddling taking center stage at the helsinki summit just days after russians were indicted by special counsel. national security adviser john bolton says that will give the president an upper hand. >> allison barber picks up team coverage live from helsinki,
12:05 am
finland. >> reporter: the administration says that they have the upper hand going into this, no secret many democrats are uncomfortable with this meeting, chuck schumer spoke with secretary of state mike pompeo on sunday telling him he doesn't believe the meeting should take place but if it is going to happen donald trump must press vladimir putin hard on election interference, can't simply raise it, accept vladimir putin's denial and let him off the hook. 12 russian intelligence officers on charges related to the hack of democrats emails during the 2016 election, schumer says the president should demand expediting all 12 officials and send them to the us to stand trial, for many that indictment is another piece of evidence showing what the us intelligence committee concluded long ago, the russian government interfered in the election
12:06 am
intending to help trump's campaign and discredit hillary clinton's. the latest incitement puts him in a position of strength heading into the meeting with vladimir putin. >> i would say it strengthens his hands, it shows the justice system, the powers of justice are aware of the russian efforts election meddling, the president can put this on the table and say this is a serious matter we need to talk about. >> donald trump seeming to take a different tone on twitter when it says the us's russia relationship is at its worst, according to donald trump that is thanks to the rig witchhunts and he asked vladimir putin about the election meddling and potential russian interference but he said he essentially that is all he could do, ask about it and thought vladimir putin would deny it but that is all he
12:07 am
seemed to say he would be able to do. jillian: we will see more on twitter, we will keep an eye out and here to way and live from helsinki's chief national correspondent and henry, good morning to you. what is the feeling over there. how will this or will it be different than meetings in years past? >> nobody knows for sure. when you step back, excellent reporting about what we expect today. let's look at what happened in just one month, only june 12, 13th, the president went to singapore to sit down with kim jong un, the north korean dictator and you had critics before that saying nothing would come of this and the north korean dictator has already won before the meeting started
12:08 am
because he gets a grand stage with the president and pictures of vladimir putin, the same thing now, vladimir putin has already won, he wants to be a big fighter in the world stage, donald trump is handing over crimea and this and that, they will accuse him of anything and everything but back to what happens one short month ago, north korea signed a piece of paper they were going to denuclearize which no one thought was possible. we have to be clear i that north korea has been backsliding in recent weeks, not clear they will follow through on their commitments but the president said he will hold them to it. the same deal with vladimir putin, he is not someone you can completely trust either so the idea the president will be criticized for sitting down, this should be canceled somehow because of indictment of those
12:09 am
russian intelligence officials. everybody on the way to singapore, this president won't get anything and kim jong un was the winner, i suspect the president is lowering expectations because he thinks he will get something out of these talks. >> the narrative we heard for so long that the president is under vladimir putin's from, quite funny this administration hasn't been good for vladimir putin or russia at all, costing a lot of money, he would prefer to still have obama. >> reporter: he would prefer to have obama because there have been tough us sanctions against russia. and under barack obama people forget he was caught on a hot mike saying tell vladimir if i get reelected in 2012 after the election i will have more flexibility. you see the pictures from 2009, barack obama was saying on that hot mike i will have more flex
12:10 am
ability to cut deals with vladimir putin. the worst thing in the world to sit down with russian president, a former kgb guy, can't trust anything he says, we will lose the whole store. barack obama a few years ago was saying he wanted to cut deals with vladimir putin and remember hillary clinton, the reset button, secretary of state saying we don't get along with him on everything, let's be honest and fair to her, there are a lot of things we don't trust, and need to talk, see how close she got to vladimir putin. the idea donald trump wants to open a dialogue and people were criticize it seems rather ridiculous. let's give them a chance to sit down and see what they can do. us sanctions, donald trump has followed up with that red line and issued military strikes, something barack obama held back on, he follows talk with action and finally let's not forget in
12:11 am
the last hour ukraine is a flow, that is where crimea is, russia doesn't want the us to send defense of arms to ukraine, barack obama said we won't send them. donald trump send those arms to ukraine in recent months against russia's wishes. there have been occasions this president has bucked vladimir putin despite what critics say. jillian: we are looking at the midterms, how important is it at this point for donald trump to make sure everything is clear as far as the conversation goes with election meddling? >> a really good question, no matter what the president says about 2016 meddling, he made this joke at a news conference, he could have a perry mason moment, throw vladimir putin against the wall and say you did and vladimir putin could say you
12:12 am
got me, i am guilty and the democrats would still say it is not enough. instead of looking in the rearview mirror like a lot of democrats in the media want to do, would be better for the president to be looking forward which is more important to the american people, what is russia doing now ahead of the midterms you mentioned. all indications are the pres.'s intelligence team, director of national intelligence and others testified under oath on capitol hill there is a blinking red light that russia is up to no good in 2018. seems to me i give the president for what he did in singapore, we need to be tough on the idea that once and for all he needs to tell vladimir putin knock it off because if it is happening ahead of the midterms the american people need to know that they can trust there is not interference in our elections but let's be clear. what was said by rod rosenstein
12:13 am
last week, there is no evidence there was collusion between the trump campaign and russia so display the allegations, no collusion, no evidence of obstruction of justice, there was meddling but didn't change one vote in 2016. way up north, thank you, appreciate it. >> what do you want the president to address and hope the outcome of the summit will be, we will share them throughout the show. >> donald trump and vladimir putin meeting face-to-face, what happens when the art of the deal meets the kremlin's playbook. >> daniel hoffman, former cia station chief in moscow, the president is about to draw a red line that vladimir putin will pay attention to when we come back. my father passed this truck down to me,
12:14 am
that's the same thing i want to do with you. it's an emotional thing to watch your child grow up and especially get behind the wheel. i want to keep you know, stacking up the memories and the miles and the years. he's gonna get mine -but i'm gonna get a new one. -oh yeah when it's time for your old chevy truck to become their new chevy truck, there's truck month. get 18% of msrp cash back on all silverado 1500 crew cab lt pickups when you finance with gm financial. that's $9,000 on this silverado. plus, during truck month make no monthly payments for 90 days.
12:17 am
good morning and welcome back, donald trump preparing to bring his dealmaking skills into a summit with vladimir putin. >> what comes out of this meeting? thanks for coming on this morning, everyone talking about russian meddling and whether we get a confession with vladimir putin. what do you expect? >> vladimir putin's kgb officer, used to lying a lot. and to deny it. from my perspective what would make the most impact on vladimir putin's if donald trump simply said we know you meddled in the election, but i'm telling you if you continue to do that you will
12:18 am
pay a price and you know when i drive a red line like i did in syria, and cyberspace. >> in a press conference in the state on twitter, various outlets but another thing to do it face-to-face with vladimir putin. do you think he should? >> that is what vladimir putin understands and our relationship with russia and the soviet union was never a binary relationship but a combination, times when we are most effective in collaborating during the second world war, we saw nazi germany and the soviets stole our nuclear secrets into the 1990s we worked well together the russians running high-level penetrations and a wrap on the
12:19 am
knuckles rather than moral persuasion it doesn't get you anywhere. >> there must be a level of respect from vladimir putin. is the type of person that respects strength and this is a different president than we had the last eight years. >> he does respects strength and actions, how do you think vladimir putin will use the summit to suit his own aims. if you want to go to the land of fake news go to moscow, it is all about propaganda and state run media, they will try to twist what was said to fit his own vision as it is. it will be over to our intelligence community to reflect on all the russians side, and taking any steps in which we agree. >> everyone knows vladimir putin
12:20 am
is someone you can't go into the meeting and trust what he is going to say. what do you expect to say? >> what i would like to see is we hold him accountable for election meddling, violating ukraine's territorial integrity and step out smartly on the other issues we worked together on arms control, the new start treaty beyond its expiration date of february 2021, in syria, proliferation and combating organized crime. those are key issues that get an overarching framework and the able hands of secretary pompeo. jillian: 20 minutes after the hour. former pres. obama wants mitt
12:21 am
romney for calling russia one of america's biggest political threats. >> when you ask what is the biggest your political threat facing america he said russia, not al qaeda, he said russia. the 1980s are calling for their foreign-policy back. jillian: tried and failed to reach that in the us russia relationship. are you ready to take your wifi to the next level?
12:24 am
then you need xfinity xfi. a more powerful way to stay connected. it gives you super fast speeds for all your devices, provides the most wifi coverage for your home, and lets you control your network with the xfi app. it's the ultimate wifi experience. xfinity xfi, simple, easy, awesome. >> this than 3 hours from now, donald trump and come face-to-face. >> they want to recess that is reassess our relation. we will do it together.
12:25 am
>> looking at the history of this. >> donald trump addressing the state of america's relationship with russia this morning, our relationship with russia has never been worse thanks to foolishness and stupidity in the rigged witchhunt. to 1987 ronald reagan and mikhail gorbachev signing the intermediate range nuclear forces treaty that prevents both parties from possessing ballistic missiles with ranges between 300-3400 miles, both countries have accused the other of violating the treaty. george w. bush met with vladimir putin in slovenia, the two leaders agreeing to open
12:26 am
cooperation toward common solutions but the invasion of iraq in 2003 with sour the relationship. next, pres. obama attempting to start a new chapter in 2010 by signing the new start treaty with dmitry medvedev and obama can't on an open mic discussing missile defense before his reelection. >> i had more flexibility. >> reporter: he stepped down in 2012 to let vladimir putin reclaim the job and accused the us of encouraging mass protests in moscow against his return to the presidency. now comes donald trump calling for a more productive relationship with russia since the campaign trail. dan sullivan highlighting why this administration could make it happen. >> rebuilding our military. this administration has given lethal weapons, the javelin antitank system to ukraine.
12:27 am
12:30 am
12:31 am
attention in finland. >> reporter: a great deal of attention. the mood is one of cautious optimism because from the expulsion of russian diplomats, the airstrikes in syria, the incredible pressure on the sanctions regime, the president's willingness to sell heavy armaments to ukraine, he has been tough on ukraine -- despite the harangue from the left that he should do more, something they didn't complain about as much when it came to president obama or that is what the white house will tell you and against that backdrop they argue the president will meet his russian counterpart later today and while let me give you a topic, the times could slide a bit but this will help you what we understand or expect later this morning, at 6:20 eastern
12:32 am
time they sit down. anyone in the room except interpreters, very interesting and the bilateral before 8:00 or 7:50 to keep your eye on and a joint press conference cannot wait for that at 9:50. as for expectations of the day and the summit here is the president in his own words. >> i don't expect anything. i going with very low expectations, getting along with russia is a good thing. we are greatly hampered by this witchhunt going on in the united states, the russian witchhunt. >> for his part vladimir putin is riding the wave of emotion after a successful world cup in his country but he comes here soberly trying to assess what if anything can be done to de-escalate tensions between our
12:33 am
countries particularly on the financial front in the face of those crushing sanctions. jillian: i am curious what the talk has been, what is the biggest thing donald trump once, a lot of topics on the agenda, election meddling, syria, crimea, what is the most important thing for the president? >> you are so right on. i want you to keep an eye on the expanded bilateral where not just leaders themselves but senior officials carefully craft their messaging, voice their opposition to previous positions taken by their counterparts and maybe massage away forward, a compromise and a chance to work together. when it comes to big topics we have been talking about them for
12:34 am
some time. syria, ukraine are the big ones, especially from the pres.'s perspective, what does he expect with russia? nato, huge issue, election meddling and the nerve agent attacks. not surprisingly, this would be an interesting conversation. >> live from helsinki. just days before the helsinki summit the left democrats ramping up their attacks on donald trump saying he is too week on russia. and softer on russia in many ways. >> let's put it together.
12:35 am
>> a nice moment. to reset relations in 2009. the question do democrats evitable standard when it comes to russia. here is republican strategist jen kearns. we went to start with you. the democrats judge the president regarding russia, and not based on the actions to the administration. >> we judge the president, and many things he does but somebody tell you who they are, the president showed us who he is, plenty of blame to go around with democrats but a lot of people want to give barack obama a hard time. the russians middle in elections after donald trump was elected in november we kicked out a slew of diplomats and put in
12:36 am
sanctions. that is showing real action. rob: the white house imposed a number of sanctions on vladimir putin, and ukraine to help them fight off any russian aggression, there have been a number of moves that have shown strength against the administration. >> left-wing media will never give donald some credit for this but he has been tougher on russia, then his predecessor barack obama. it was barack obama caught on tape, not donald trump, saying he would have more flexibility after the election to russia. if you look at sanctions donald trump is enacted, nesting russian dolls, one on top of another and top of another and they are very fierce. and regarding facebook ads that were purchased, they punished a
12:37 am
lot of people in vladimir putin's inner circle, 7 of the wealthiest people in russia, 17 top government officials prohibiting them from ever being able to have a bank account in the west or travel to the united states, and in august, and the energy industries in russia, and facilities in seattle, in new york, washington, what happens, been tough on russia and the media. rob: he cost russia a lot of money. i want to get your reaction in 2012. >> after my election --
12:38 am
rob: at the time newt gingrich says it looks like president obama is only worried about russia. will he answer to the american people and give something away after his election? what is your response? >> a huge responsibility. when you have 12 indictments against russia the first thing you want to do is go we are at war with russia and they are trying to affect our democracy. stand up and say don't mess with us or we will miss with you. there is no collusion. come up and say something, we are at war with you and you have to stop this. >> the president in his tone those attack the mueller investigation rather than give credence to the idea that the russians impacted the election. >> donald trump has been clear
12:39 am
through his actions and sanctions we just mentioned, and the deep state is alive and well, no mistake that the timing of the 12 indictments came down friday evening 36 hours before donald trump was wheeled out to helsinki, the deep state did that, mueller's special counsel did this to embarrass the president prior to him sitting down with vladimir putin and the obama administration did act after meddling in the election but they only did so a couple days after the election when donald trump won instead of hillary clinton won. >> that is elementary 101. pull your head out of the sand. >> we have to go, a busy show today. jillian: a lot going on in helsinki, the pres. and first
12:40 am
lady, not much to see you here. just wrapping up that breakfast and making their way out and keep you updated on developments from finland as they are happening. what do you want the president to address and hope the outcome of the summit will be. next is my prediction a deal is made to turn over the 12 indicted russians and for once the dems are speechless. day on facebook, you can see donald trump will do what he does best for our country and that is that, and doesn't matter with the rest of the planet thinks he should do, everyone relax and enjoy the show. jamie says i am hoping for a good outcome, make america great again. we will be reading them. vladimir putin, how is donald

12:44 am
>> welcome back. it finland, that is the pres.'s vehicle heading to the residence where he is staying to get ready for this big summit with vladimir putin. jillian: the president and first lady wrapped up a breakfast with the finish president, preparation for the summit a few minutes away. rob: there they are. he is ready to meet with
12:45 am
vladimir putin. jillian: your with expert insight is international relations expert dr. rebecca grant, thank you for joining us. what will make this summit a success? >> the fact that it is happening is a success. they shouldn't be meeting. >> these are the countries with the largest amounts of nuclear weapons in the world, they need to meet and it is time for trump to get in the room with vladimir putin and take the measure of the man. rob: we have an island off the coast of ukraine, part of ukraine or was, russia annexed it under pres. obama's watch, donald trump was critical of that move in people question the democrats and liberals say the president has been soft on vladimir putin and might recognize the move to annex crimea. i don't think that will happen. >> it was a terrible thing, jim
12:46 am
mattis was right to say this with an illegal annexation as bad as what the soviet union did after world war ii. i don't see trump doing that at all. he will have to probe for a vladimir putin's reaction to what is going to ukraine, where is vladimir putin on syria, is there a prospect for nuclear arms control? none of it will happen today. this is about probing and seeing what is possible. jillian: what should the president because of? >> he should because us a vladimir putin but he knows that. vladimir putin has a terrible reputation. russia has been very aggressive militarily. a few days ago they flew some bombers into south korea. they do this all the time. trump needs to be cautious and not listen to the critics, he
12:47 am
needs to go with his own judgment and figure out is there a way to work with vladimir putin on anything however small, back to cold war factory? rob: do you think the president sent a message to vladimir putin? if it wasn't engagement with russia directly he sent the bombs into syria, was that a message to vladimir putin that i'm not here to mess around and drive redlines, just not enforce them? >> that strike in april was a very bad night for moscow because britain, france and the us through those russian air defenses. vladimir putin took note of that and the fact that nato had a pretty good meeting at the end, looking at a 32 partner in finland, sweden and ukraine had meetings during this time. finland has an 800 mile border
12:48 am
with russia. vladimir putin is taking note of the military might and nato has never been stronger from a military perspective. you bet vladimir putin knows that. jillian: is vladimir putin able to strengthen a relationship with the united states? >> excellent question. we just know vladimir putin wants to make russia great again. does he want something? is he ready to deal or create world chaos? rob: i thought it was interesting how he goes into the nato summit a few days before this meeting and slams this deal, billions of dollars to russia, the oil pipeline deal, that should have been a message to vladimir putin, not afraid to criticize the things you are doing and not afraid to mess up your deal have cost you some money. >> the back story is poland and the baltic republics are opposed to the deal and gives russia potential leverage. it is a military strategic
12:49 am
consideration, trump had to bring that up, we don't want russia to use energy to blackmail germany and use military force, you have vladimir putin got that message. jillian: thank you for your time, appreciate you joining us. rob: 49 after the hour hillary clinton trolling donald trump just hours before this sitdown with vladimir putin cracking a joke about the world cup and which team the president is playing for. jillian: carly shimkus is here with online reaction, good morning. ahh... summer is coming. and it's time to get outside. pack in even more adventure with audible. with the largest selection of audiobooks. audible lets you follow plot twists off the beaten track.

jillian: donald trump will sit down for his historic summit with vladimir putin but not everyone is on board. rob: carly shimkus with serious xm 115 is here with reaction from washington. >> a lot of reaction. we had some democrats say the president should cancel this meeting with the town has shifted with those critics serving up some major suggestions how he should handle it and one thing on everybody's my dues russian interference in the presidential election. chuck schumer has been tweeting up a storm, saying donald trump to meet with vladimir putin without addressing the outrage of the american people in securing real projects would be terrible for the us and the security of our election system.
12:54 am
california sen. dianne feinstein said by not holding vladimir putin accountable for interfering in the 2016 election donald trump is failing to protect our national security and the integrity of our democracy. more cautious message from rand paul, russia shouldn't metal in our election, there is no excuse. the us shouldn't do it either. we should remain rational and not yelling war crime. massachusetts sen. marky what's the two to meet, don't cancel, confront. election hacking, crimea, syria, nuclear weapons, we have pressure on vladimir putin, use the summits to demand progress on key issues. rob portman chimed in with this message, i hope the president takes an opportunity to make clear to vladimir putin that russia abstractions to interfere
12:55 am
are unacceptable and russia's behavior must change of it once improved relations with the us. most people agree the president should not going with any niceties and should hold vladimir putin accountable. rob: after the 2016 election we are not surprised to hear from hillary clinton ahead of this meeting. >> a matter of time before hillary clinton chimes in on this. she used the other big news of the day, the world cup, great world cup, question for donald trump as he meets vladimir putin, do you know which team you play for? the president's supporters not letting her get away with that, cara says she's the last person who should ask that question. michelle says the real question is what team do you play for? we know it is not america. joseph says you did not make the cut. a lot of hostile reaction.
12:56 am
jillian: apparently today fear makes your problems better. >> according to a finish brewery they released a special trump vladimir putin summit beer, here is donald trump with the tagline let's settle this like adults, also make breweries better again. rock paper scissors, having a lot of fun with it and announced it on twitter you have difficult decisions to make in helsinki, disagreements to solve because we are the best in problem solving. they say beer makes things better. who knew? rob: beer makes your problems worse? >> you get too much beer. that is coming up. rob: thank you, carly. much more still to come in our next hour of coverage, donald

rob: kevin corke. hi, kevin. >> great to be with you guys. it's easy to understand why he loves to have conversations with world leaders with whom we've had past problems. the idea of being you can't get anything done if your unwilling to listen and then talk. the backdrop from which the president will operate as he meets with russian president vladimir putin. consider what happened back in singapore come this conversation with north koreas later kim jong un. today a very different circumstance, but a similar opportunity. a chance to have the conversation and advance the american agenda with israel. and and i use that word defensively, buresh is destabilizing behavior led many to believe they have been a quite some time. the president this morning at the breakfast with the president of finland, with whom we work very carefully and closely at the nato summit took time out to
1:03 am
thank them for their support. >> nato was i think never been stronger and it was a little bit tough at the beginning and it turned out to be loved. it really was a great meeting that we had and brought everybody together. i appreciated your support and your help and i will say again come you to do this beautifully. thank you very much. reporter: a lot of fire and brimstone during the summit, but afterwards all smiles obviously is the president says there's a lot of love in the room. let me show you briefly what to expect on the agenda today. one-on-one between president trump input and expected runs 6:20 eastern time and then a joint press conference which we can all bring you right here on fox news channel somewhere on
1:04 am
the 9:00 in the maybe 10:00 hour. meanwhile, russia's president vladimir putin, his decision to a crimea obviously a major problem and is expected to be a major topic. it won't produce very much agreement. >> you can work up the possibility he might recognize russia's annexation of crimea appeared highly unlikely. spin the crimea was in international law. we all recognize that policy. >> obviously ambassador huntsman with chris wallace on "fox news sunday." one last nugget i want to share with you guys. if you haven't seen it, go to twitter and check out hillary clinton's twitter feed. she took a jab at the president asking him what team is beyond with respect to the u.s. and russia. you sort of expect it, part and

parcel to the 2016 election fallout. i expect nothing less. >> she's bitter about the 2016 election? breaking news. kevin, thank you very much. jillian: center stage at the helsinki summit just days after a dozen russians were indicted by the special counsel. national security adviser john bolton says w. the president and upper hand. rob: ellison barber takes up our coverage from helsinki this morning. reporter: good morning. the administration says they have the upper hand, but it's no secret democrats say this meeting that is makes them uncomfortable. chuck schumer says he spoke with secretary of state mike pompeo on sunday. he told pompeo he doesn't believe the trump putin meeting should take place without, but if it's going to happen,
1:06 am
president trump must press hard on the issue of election interference. you can't simply raise that accept elections denial and let him off the hook. the justice and of the 12 officers related to vacuum leak of democrats who knows during the 2016 election. they should demand that britain extradite all 12 of those officials can send them to the u.s. to stand trial. the indictment is a strong piece of evidence showing what u.s. intelligence community concluded long ago paid the russian government to help then candidate campaign and discredit hillary clinton. the latest indictment put them in the position of strength heading into the meeting with vladimir putin. >> i would say the practice strengthens his pay in. the department is aware of these efforts at election meddling. they can put this on the table and say this is a serious matter we need to talk about.

reporter: president trump seemed to take a different tone on twitter when he said the u.s. relationship is at its worse because of the red witch hunt. earlier this week the president said he would discuss election meddling with putin, but that is really all he can do that he would bring about. he also said he thought putin would deny it. >> sticking with that exact topic. at his back with us again and how the president would broach the subject with vladimir putin. what do you think? >> democrats are demanding that. but frankly the president is sick and tired of it. he keeps calling it a witch hunt. these frankly frustrated that most of the media wants to focus on meddling cannot focus on the

fbi agents who started the investigation and their text messages saying we need to get trump. we need to get candidate donald trump. so look, the president sees one narrative in the mainstream media that he doesn't like. he likes to put out a separate narrative. a lot of people not talking about the president and previous governments were this not on the sidelines in the habit might quite like this one-on-one before. he has also sent heavy defensive weapons to ukraine, something russia has long opposed, but then not to ukraine and ally. the media doesn't like to talk about that. is it going to come up? yes. is it going to be the dominant part of the conversation? no way. this president has been transparent about the media might not want to admit this but will be good if the u.s. had a better relationship with russia. we can work or inferior. we can work in iran.

all range of important issues that he wants to focus on rather than election meddling. the president said a couple days ago there could be a perry mason moment were pressed putin against the wall and say did you do it and he was so you've got me, and guilty. remodeled in the election. democrats still wouldn't be satisfied. putin didn't say it firmly enough. you didn't throw it against the wall hard enough. frankly he spends too much time election meddling. but if he spends too much time on it, it's going to be a waste. a lot of other big issues that this president will talk about. >> election meddling likely won't be the dominant part of this conversation. what do you think will be? >> i think syria is one of them. the president comes into this meeting and says to cbs in an interview, i've got really low expectations. i'm not sure lots going to happen.
1:10 am
i'm calling the bluff on that because this is a president who loves the dramatic moment. we saw it in singapore. we were up in the middle of the night like this and the president after everyone said who knows if they'll be in agreement with north korea. sign a paper, get ready. i would be surprised if he doesn't try to strike with something with the electric patients are set and he comes up with something big and bold. syria is something that his predecessor, barack obama couldn't get his arms around. he said if al-assad uses military weapons. barack obama basically backed out. what a donald trump to try so far? he is attacked syria twice with with airstrikes that is backed up his words with action. i'd be surprised if they don't try to get something done on syria. >> the huge "washington post"

the term campaign and the russian government. the democrats like to seem like vladimir putin delivered the 2016 election to donald trump. there is no evidence of that. there's evidence of meddling, but no evidence that was the determining factor. that's what annoys president trump. that's what he calls this a witch hunt a witch onto the lot of of people falling into the trap and conflating two things. train to henry, great coverage. thank you so much. >> great to see you. rob: what do you want the president to address and hope the outcome of this summit will be? sinister comments on facebook, twitter, instagram. we will share throughout the show. jillian: just hours away from the president meeting face-to-face. a lot they can talk about when the art of the deal meets the playbook.

as everyone's banging on about it coming after rebate the issue of meddling. it will not change anything. he's not going to scare some agreement. they've been doing this since 1940 or 41. he's got to be strong about it. signing the latest indictment along with the previous set of indictments will be important, but we have to be realistic. what can we do, he's not going to hand over these officers. it's not going to happen. asking for puts them in a weaker position. if you want to get serious about it, we can send back a handful or dozen officers of various currently here in the u.s. and they can also not let up on the sanctions and possibly inferred that there could be additional sanctions coming down the line. at the other topics that exists, he needs to go out to syria because that is something we could benefit from in the short-term. i think we need to talk to.syria in terms of her waning influence

in how we back that off. >> lets goodyear, richard. you heard them talk about meddling in syria. are there any other issues you think will be on the table? >> good morning, jillian. i think there is opportunity in syria, but i would also put forward an opportunity to him to talk about establishing a strategic arms reduction regime again. the last strategic arms control talks we have her back in 2010. this opportunity as russia continues to modernize their nuclear forces. their intercontinental ballistic missiles cover sub launch ballistic missiles and bombers. opportunity to get something not necessarily a deal coming out of helsinki, but some bandwidth or arrangements that we can begin to have discussions for principals to discuss and put in place.
1:19 am
jillian: jesse, how do you think this to be a success for the united states? >> all the other issues are critical including ukraine and how the united states is weapon i said to ensure they will not be attacked by russia. russia sees our country as a threat to them when we've empowered our nato allies. so long without, ukraine and along with how we've been involved in syria and the attacks we displayed, put nicely played seriously under this presidency. trying to get a reset with russia, i would not expect to have the hillary clinton outcome of this. don't expect this to be very serious and maybe we won't see anything come out of it initially. when they speak i commend that that is where trump is vast. the medicine deals in negotiations he must speak face-to-face with those that he is trying to work with, trying to get strategy with and overcome the obstacles with. this is great business strategy a lot with what his role is as president of united dates.
1:20 am
>> some people have criticized president trump for wanting to continue to take part in the summit with lavender putin. do you think he should be in what he said of those people being critical? >> they need to take a deep breath and grandstanding. every president in the past has been added because they've reached out. hillary clinton and her famous effort to create a friendlier atmosphere. political theater on the part of senator schumer. that is to be expected. you have to set that aside. and henry put it best. there is noise about this issue because the democrats are conflating, jamming everything together. did russia metal? of course they were. but they went to gym that it was their narrative about pollution and that is where the there's a lot of people have been creating this great divide that exists.
