tonight looks different. >> as we noticed last night when they took the wide shot of kamala harris and you saw that empty room. it was just weird! tonight i do think they will try to take that to another level. i tried to find out this afternoon walking around here whether or not this was a recent development. it seems like it has been in the work. there will be an outside event behind us here. they could fit about 100 cars back there and they will. he is expected to make the speech inside as kamala harris did. that's what they are telling us so far today. we think after that traditional be an outside event with fireworks perhaps. hallelujah. everybody is dying to see some regular excitement. it's been a somber week. >> like a drive in with

fireworks. the president is not letting up. hammering joe biden for abandoning his home state of pennsylvania and left them high and dry and open borders and high taxes. not letting his foot off biden's neck on his big night. >> the key difference these are specific claims by trumps as opposed to the -- i don't know. insults about trump's personality. things that can't be measured. what trump is talking about can be murder. -- measured. i want to talk about tonight. i thought the convention was already over. >> [laughing]. >> i forgot about joe. i am wondering if anybody at home felt the same way. i forgot that joe will be there and accept the nomination. completely forgot about it. it's an interesting comparison again.

this has been nothing but trump bashing and that makes sense. you are the outside party so you are going to portray him as awful. but they replaced awful with evil. and voters who are unsure about joe or voted for obama and then voted for trump. if you are voted for trump you are racist and sexist and evil. this puts targets on voters backs. that worries me. i used to teach politics. both groups say each one is wrong. but the democrats game plan lifted from the feverish hate on twitter and antifa and they are demonizing in exchange for power. i worry about the consequences

of that. >> juan, what are your expectations for joe biden this evening? this is a week with a lot bigger and brighter stars than joe biden. here he is thursday night and a lot of pressure. >> well, i think joe biden has to be up for the fight. democrats want to know he is in their. biden has a great slogan. this is a battle for the soul of america. tonight he has to be clear that he is a whaarrior for the soul america. he won't get distracted by trump in scranton, pennsylvania. joe biden is a much loved son of scranton, pennsylvania. while he says biden ripped someone off. you see steve bannon indicted for ripping off republicans who sent him money to build a wall.

it's not just bannon. flynn, manafort, michael cohen. drain the swamp and build the wall. in terms of the speech tonight, he has to make it clear: soul of america. this election is a referendum about donald trump and about trump's record over the last 4 years. do you want another 4 years of this? that's the point he has to deliver tonight. >> do you think joe biden is capable of delivering as juan said? >> well, joe biden has political strength but public speaking has never been one of them. it's not likely one he will all of a sudden get. it's hard to do a speech like this without a crowd. imagine not having anyone start a chant or shout your name or start crazy applause and you get to stand there and bask in that energy. instead, you and greg are

fantastic at doing monologues and you read into a prompter. during the pandemic you don't have audience feedback. that's hard and sad. but i think it will be okay. i think it's hard to screw up a prepared speech reading off the teleprompter. when you see biden and harris into interviews like this weekend on abc news, that's where you will see more room for error. at the end of tonight, the goal for the democrats has to be to look a little bit more like clinton and gore than dole and kemp. i am not sure what the consensus will be there. >> i miss basking in the applause of live audiences. that barack obama was supposed to the last speaker but he wanted to be seen as the attack dog and she could rise above. was she overshadowed or did he have her own moment? >> i think he didn't want to be an attack dog. yes, it was a hand off to kamala harris. a man who had been president saying this woman is well prepared to be vice-president. but the bigger point, i think, is obama overshadowed. i don't think there is any question. he is a former president. he is much better known and in my opinion a much better speaker. i didn't think there was a contest there. it was an act of grace on his part to say she should be begin the primary spot on her night when she makes history. a black woman nominated to be vice-president of the united states.

just a quick note on obama's speech. it's interesting to me. i think it was chris wallace, it was not hope and change. it was a different tone. i felt like he was speaking to people who were disillusioned and became cynical about american politics. problems don't get solved. in terms of civil rights, he said people who were beaten and getting hanged didn't give up hope in those days, but kept their faith in the american principles of equal rights and justice. he said john lewis told him on the day barack obama was born, john was ushered into jail in the south. things change quickly. you have to get out there and organize and vote. in that sense i found it inspiring. >> greg, it wasn't so much hope and change as you better vote or

we are all screwed. >> it went exactly as i predicted. nothing that obama said was fact based. it was all feelings based. he is unfit. he is mean and bad. these are opinions. they are not tied to any data. there is no bottom line that the voter can grab on to. they want to hear about jobs. they want to hear about the economy and specifics. this is just more of that stuff you already heard on cnn and msnbc, which is trump is a big meanie. he is going to be even meaner. what kamala harris said about trump is he caused a loss of certainty. how can you lose something you never had before? i think kamala harris forgets the weekly beheadings that occurred when obama was president. you want to talk about anxiety

and uncertainty. we were doing "the five" and everybody here was marose and uncertain about the next terrorists attack. there was no counter offensive. the democrats offered no response. that created a level of uncertainty we had not had since 9-11. now we are seeing the same thing with the interior terrorism, the stuff in the united states. the violence on the streets. the murders. there is no counter offensive from the democrats running the city. that's creating uncertainty and anxiety in the american population. those are the people that will vote. the democrats are letting them down. they are not even touching this idea because they know they are responsible. >> interesting that you bring up the point about the cynicism and barack obama, martha, saying we have to get out there and have

hope. yet there was one line in kamala harris's speech that stuck out to me. talking about what they will accomplish, she said we may fall short? i thought what? she said we will be honest with you. we may not get there. i didn't think that was rousing. >> yes, it's a great point, dana. you think about the two times in recent history that an incumbent has lost his job. you have bill clinton who presented this vision of the man from hope. this young, inspiring, uplifting. whatever you think about bill clinton, that's what got him to that moment. then you go back to ronald reagan. it's an uphill battle to beat an incumbent. very hard to do in a difficult economic time. reagan had morning in america. where is the morning in america?

barack obama had a unique opportunity in that opportunity to say here's why joe is the man. here's why he is the one who can turn this thing around. here's what he will do to build us back better and create that momentum. the joe lines were throw away. he is descent and nice and my brother. let's talk about other stuff. you better get out there and vote. i think it was a wasted opportunity. >> jesse, do you think last night for either former president obama or kamala harris, did they bring in any new voters? anyone who didn't vote in 2016 or never voted democrat before? >> death it. -- doubt it. president obama looked terrified. he knows this will be a low turnout election and the internal numbers for the

democratic party must be horrific. he knows joe has no base. he didn't want joe to run in 2016 and didn't want joe to run this year. he knows covid is on the down trend. football is around the corner and schools are opening. the writing is on the wall. to say that donald trump is a threat to democracy, all democrats believe in they don't win it's a threat to democracy. i think the threat to democracy is buying foreign intelligence to wiretap the opposing campaign. what do i know? it looked like obama was disdainful of the current president. he left his legacy in tatters. the obama mandate is gone. the iran deal is out of there. the only thing left is a cloud of scandal. president obama knows if biden doesn't win, bill barr stay there is and durham continues to investigate obama gate.

president obama was not an effective leader. he was frozen any time he had to make a decision. he had a weak recovery and high gas prices and racial polarization. these were not great times. to say trump has bad character. come on. everybody in the democratic party was palling around with harvey levin and jeffrey epstein. you had crooked hillary out there. where is hunterer biden. a lot of times people say barack obama gave us donald trump. he could have apologized to the democratic party for delivering that. he knows this will be a tough race. >> god love you, jesse. they are putting an effort into it. the progressives may not get everything they want but that's a big difference. she should do self-examination as to why that was and why people didn't turnout. >> dana made a very good point. >> [laughing]. >> hillary clinton is not like her husband who was a popular scoundrel. she is not popular among the democrats. does the party have to weigh the cost and benefits of having her on? >> no. especially for women. most of this convention is targeted at women. last night you had clinton and warren and pelosi. you can go down the line. the idea here i think is that president trump said it last week. if he doesn't win, then the election was rigged. obviously he talked about delaying the election and trying

to undermine the post office. he said he doesn't have faith if in the structure because people want to engage in fraud. tongue in cheek she said she won by 2 million votes and still lost the election. she is not saying anything illegal happened, but suggesting don't close your eyes in a poker game with donald trump. all that matters for him is winning. it's not about decency or standing up for american democracy. it's about winning. >> unlike the democratic party about compassion as cities explode. martha, it seems like the democrats want to be the party of women. even though they partied with

harvey levin and with jeffrey epstein. they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. >> i thought scott jennings who worked at the bush white house with dana had a great moment on our rival cable network. he said how has bill clinton not been cancelled? everybody has been cancelled. how has he survived this process? that's a good question given pictures that came out that day. doing these interviews and kamala harris and joe biden sit down, you will get into gritty questions about her saying that she believes the women who accused joe biden. tara reid is back out there today telling her story which is something they are not excited about. a lot of hypocrisy around here. i think you are about to see a bare-knuckled moment surface.

as soon as this moment is over, getting through the dnc, this guy is descent and nice. both sides want to win. you will see this get really, really ugly in the coming weeks. mark my words. this has only just begun. hypocrisy with the issues of women is not going to end. >> jesse, i felt like the real worry i got from hillary clinton was that voters won't show up for joe which explains why they are pushing mail-in ballots. they have to make it easy for uninterested voters to vote. >> yes, they know it will be a low turnout. they are making sure everybody gets their ballots in early. she looked like a ghost haunting

the country. screechy audio. it was lifeless. to have democrats complain about fairness in elections. the democrats have the media if their back pocket and unions squeezing the president before an election to get what they want. come on? hillary paid $9 million to get a wiretap. if she plays poker with the president she only one card and that's the race card. we have seen that too many times. she called on democrats to work as poll workers. i think they are nervous about turnout and trying to work the angles or get ahead of this thing to have an excuse when they lose. >> her husband loves a good poll

unrest. they threw rocks and battles and hammers at authorities. greg, everyone is moved by the story of gabby who spoke about her son being shot at a birth party by a stray bullet. given the what is going on around the nation and an 80% increase in gun sales because people are concerned, is this moment -- are they needing the moment? >> no, i said this yesterday. rather than have the courage to condemn the very specific crimes of violence that are terrorizing rise now the citizens in our cities, they instead created a broad target out of generic gun violence. they used tragedy as a shield. when you do that, you are saying

everything, good or bad, resulting from the gun is like all the same. they are all equal. by doing that, they think they sidestepped confronting an american crisis they are in part responsible for. these are cities run by democratic leaders. they know by not doing anything it creates tension and anxiety so the voters might stop and think whether voting for trump will make this worse. they are leveraging terror. extorting a vote out of america. it's pretty disgusting. >> juan, i wonder with all of this discussion about the sub b suburban voter, who sis concernd about what is going on in the

cities, concerned about the defund the police if violence will move from the cities to the suburbs. this video is from new york. i warn you, it's a horrific scene. a former police officers was assaulted in mid town in the middle of the afternoon. they pulled 600 police officers off the streets. now we are seeing this. is this a mistake for democrats to ignore this? >> they are not ignoring it. first of all -- >> they haven't mentioned it once. >> there is not widespread violence in american cities. let's not buy into donald trump's nonsense. >> hold on. >> that's not true. >> [overlapping talking]. >> violent crime in this country

it goes away. i don't blame the democrats for bringing that up. they need to think about something that was brought up last night. the new york attorney general called to dissolve the national rifle association. in a close election, i understands why they appeal to the younger people and parents. >> looting, arson and murders are up. maybe the democratic party is misreporting their own criminal activity. i doubt that. this is not 2015 when we are seeing a rash of school shootings. this is 2020. you are seeing a rise in homicides, and quality of life issues.

homophob homeless, riots and street crime. if you live in a major area and turn on the local news every night, they lead with crime stories. if you are in the burrbs you are seeing crime at the top of every hour. then you go to social media and you look at viral media. the guy in portland that got kicked in the head and almost died. that has more views than democrats speaking at the convention. you can't censor this where cnn doesn't report it or the "new york times" doesn't report it. everybody feels it. if you say defund the police during this surge ever chaos, that's a recipe for disaster. not only have they not mentioned crime, they have not mentioned china, russia, impeachment, judges, north korea, a border wall, trade, god or terrorism. maybe they are just ignoring
