9:00 am
in a moment. we await joe biden. his big speech on the economy coming up as the dow falls 43 points. a lot of news friday morning. great to be with you. >> great labor day weekend to you. >> sandra: see you back here next week. "outnumbered" starts right now. >> fox news alert we're awaiting remarks from president trump at the white house after he strongly denied a report in the atlantic claiming he insulted former u.s. service members and chose to skip a ceremony honoring them in france. the atlantic citing unnamed forces. different from the official reason why the president didn't make the 2018 trip to a french cemetery and that he referred to the u.s. marines buried there as losers and suckers. the president last night forcefully denying the allegations calling the story totally false. >> president trump: i would be
9:01 am
willing to swear on anything that i never said that about our fallen heroes. there is nobody that respects them more. what animal would say such a thing? and especially since i've done more i think than almost anybody to help our military. that is a total never trumper magazine and other people trying to influence the outcome of a presidential election. >> john roberts joins us live from the north lawn. john, you have done a lot of reporting on this and have good insight. share it with us. >> i was there in november 2018 when the president was there for veterans day in france. he was supposed to go to the ceremony near bello wood, two hour drive east of paris and the next day to another cemetery on the western side of paris. we had heard that they canceled because the weather was bad and
9:02 am
the helicopter wasn't going to be able to fly and to get him there by motorcade would be difficult and decided to go in a different direction. the atlantic is reporting the reason the president didn't go out there was because a, he didn't want his hair to get wet and b, he didn't want to go out there because the 1800 marines who died in the battle there back in world war i were suckers and that other people were buried there are losers. i talked to two people who were in the meetings to make the determination whether or not to go to the cemetery. one was john bolton who doesn't have any great love lost for president trump. both those people told me president trump never, ever said that. the president tweeted this morning at the atlantic saying that magazine is dying like most magazines. they make up a story. the story is refuted th. is what we're up against like the fake dossier. we fight and fight is dying li
9:03 am
magazines, so they make up a fake story to gain relevance. story refuted, this is what we're up against, just like the false dossier, you fight and fight and people realize it is a total fraud. this is more of what people said last night, coming back from pennsylvania route. listen here. >> pres. trump: t-- to think i would make statements negative to military and fallen heroes, when nobody has done what i've done with the military budget, getting pay raises for the military, it is a disgraceful situation by a magazine. i would be willing to swear on anything that i never said that about our fallen heroes. there is nobody that respects them more. >> so i just double-checked with the reporting i did back in november 2018 about the cancellation, the suggestion for the cancellation was made by
9:04 am
zach fuentes, an aide to chief of staff john kelly. john kelly conquered and the president said he wanted to go up to bellowwood. kelly, according to a white house official i spoke to back then said it is not a big deal because you are going to the cemetery the next day and talking about the idea the president not wanting his hair to get wet, he did a speech for an hour out in the rain, so clearly that wasn't a concern for him the following day. and here is the official e-mail that was sent out bithe military advisor to the president about not being able to fly in the chopper. it says, team, we are a bad weather call for today's lift, chief of staff general kelly will replace potus for today's ceremony. please advise if any questions. those are the facts as we know them from the white house and talking to people in the meeting and one of the people i spoke to this morning said john bolton,
9:05 am
who also wrote about that decision in his book, and it wasn't mentioned in the book nor did he say "suckers" or "losers" everemanated from the president's mouth and a former official conquered that did not happen. there are other things in the article we are understanding may have happened, but that according to two sources i talked to today, on both sides of the fence, it didn't happen. >> wow. pretty big discrepancy in reporting there. definitely need to get to the bottom of that. john roberts, thank you so much. we are getting a tape played back where the president addressed the issue on the atlantic and talking about the economy and those jobless numbers that we got today. we will bring you those questions and answers just as soon as we get them turned around. you are watching "outnumbered" and i'm melissa francis. here is host of kennedy on fox
9:06 am
business network, kennedy herself and fox news contributor, katie pavlich, fox news's jesse jackson /* /- jessica torlov, and charles payne. charles, i'm deeply suspicious of this because i heard just two days ago some democrats talking about the fact that joe biden is pulling with the military and that is where the president had been strong in the past. it seems coincidental that this story would then chip away at that further, especially when there is so much reporting. you heard john roberts talking about ambassador bolton, who has nothing for the president, who says it is not true. what are your thoughts on this? >> i'm with you a thousand percent. i got to tell you, it really is scary how listen, the media,
9:07 am
most of the media, their disdain for president trump has taken them so far away from -- i used to love the atlantic, i was reading 50 to 60 magazines per month, it was one of my favorites. it is such a grievance, it is all negative trump stuff and nothing is ever good. like "washington post" and "new york times," they have given up a lot of journalistic credibility in my mind and for what, really for what? let's not forget who we're talking about here, our nation's heroes, we don't want to put them in the middle of this nonsen nonsense, salacious stuff, it is ridiculous, really shameful. it is really a major, major blow to their credibility. >> melissa: kennedy, he didn't want to go because he didn't want to get his hair wet? we just watched him on the
9:08 am
battleship north carolina and there was thunder, you could hear rain. i mean, certainly getting his hair wet there. that is like a detail somebody who is really gunning for him would throw in there. your thoughts? >> kennedy: there are enough people who dislike the president, who would go on record and you could use any one of those sources. they are now filling libraries with anti-trump books, people who left the administration, you would have no problem at all finding someone on the record to say something bad about the president and the fact that the atlantic needs to use anonymous sources, just goes to show you that print is dead. this is the political equivalent of headline that says melt belly fat overnight by eating this vegetable. [laughter] >> melissa: okay. we had a good time on that. i understand we are getting the play out now from the president. is that right?
9:09 am
okay. yeah, so we're going to have a tape playback in just a second, where he's going to address this very issue. we saw him in john roberts report last night, even though the video wasn't great, deny thanksgiving video and offended by it, saying what animal would say this. he will talk more is a signing ceremony going on with serbia and kosova, tri-lateral meeting. we'll listen in to this and he's going to address issues on the economy. we have great jobs numbers reports. unemployment rate dipping to ha 8.4. a lot of folks said if you could get it under 10 by the election, it would be the big thing if it could hurts or help the president. >> at this pace, it would take a full year before all jobs lost before pandemic are regained. is that good enough?
9:10 am
>> pres. trump: i think what is happening, you will see tremendous growth in the very near future. we're rounding the curve, coming up with vaccines, the vaccine has been announced soon. you are going to see great companies announcing the vaccines. spoke with pfizer today, i speak with different companies, johnson & johnson doing really well. ladurna. we have tremendous talent, tremendous scientists and they are really right there and i think you will hear very good news and also, to me, maybe even better, i think when it comes to therapeutics, you will have, peter, incredible news coming out very soon. i say therapeutics because that is you walk into the hospital and whether it is a transfusion or a shot, people get better, that is something that i think right now is really incredible. the numbers are way down, as you know. florida is doing very well.
9:11 am
arizona has been actually a little bit of a miracle how quickly it went down. it went up and went down very quickly. two really great governors. texas, great governor, same thing. california, the numbers are way down. so we're really starting to see those areas that popped up are really going down. the mortality rate, look at percentage what is happening, that is because of the convo lessent clause because of rod e rodesver. a lot of different reasons. we have therapeutics that are having an impact and looking at numbers from 50 to 85% better, so that is really something. so we're very proud of the job we're doing. i think in particular it, not only the great companies, but companies, every one has said to me, if this was a more typical
9:12 am
kind of presidency, i'll be nice, more typical kind of president, getting these approvals would take two or three years and they'll have them, i mean, as far as we're concerned, they're very close to announcing some very big news. so we're honored by that. i've had a team, whether it is vice president mike pence, head of the task force and the people have done a great job, i don't think they've been recognized for the great job they have done. last night i ran out into in pennsylvania, the home of great arnold palmer, read statistics compared to other parts of the world and we are doing phenomenally well. if you took new york, new york was just really, they made a lot of mistakes in new york, but if you took that out, tremendous number of deaths in new york. if you took that out, our numbers are just about as good
9:13 am
as anybody in the world and even without that, without taking it out, you see the numbers we have. so we've done a good job, done a great job in helping governors. i think every governor is very happy, not everybody expresses it to the media, they do at task force meetings. we have had task force meetings where we are laying praise on us. they talk to the press and won't be as generous, but that is okay. for the most part, we have helped in every case and governor, helped them a lot. some we've made look good and some are doing great job and others haven't. but as a country, we have really done a terrific job. i want to thank vice president pence. but i won't thank too much right now, we'd like to get the job finished first. the vaccines will come out soon and therapeutics are continuing and that is why we're having the kind of numbers we have. i will be doing a news
9:14 am
conference today at 5:00, i will see you there. >> sir, do you need to apologize to servicemembers and veterans? >> pres. trump: no, it's a fake story written by a magazine that was probably not going to be around much longer, but it was a totally fake story. that was confirmed by many people who were actually there. it was a terrible thing that somebody could say the kind of things and especially to me, i've done more for the military than almost anybody else. look at how the va is doing, it is doing incredibly well. we've got all sorts of things done from accountability to veteran choice to everything and right now, it's got the highest approval rating that it has ever had. 91% approvala rating, never been anywhere close to that. nobody has done what i've done, that includes salary increases, but really includes rebuilding of our military. you know when i came here, our military was totally depleted
9:15 am
and we spent almost 2.5 trillion, much more than you spent on your military, i can tell you that, slightly more. $2.5 trillion, all made in the u.s., f-35s, brand-new jets and rockets and missiles and hope to god we never have to use it, but our nuclear is now in extraordinary shape, including new weapons. i just hope we never have to use that, that is a level of power you don't even want to talk about, you don't even want to hear about it. it's a fake story and it's a disgrace they are allowed to do it. interestingly, i hate to bring up this book, but john bolton, no friend of mine, i thought he didn't know too much about what he was doing, he was -- didn't do a good job, but he wrote a book and talks about this incident and he doesn't mention it and frankly a lot of repor
9:16 am
reporters, even bad ones read that and thought it was ends of the story. there is nobody that considers the military and especially people that have given their lives in the military, to me, they're heroes. it's even hard to believe how they could do that and i say that, the level of bravery and to me they are absolute heroes. thank you very much, everybody. >> thank you very much. thank you very much. >> melissa: okay, we were waiting for a second to see if the president was going to answer any more questions, obviously so much of what he talked about there was anger over this article we were talking about in the atlantic that came out overnight. we were in the middle of the conversation, jessica, i will get your take, the president saying it's a fake story. he obviously loves the military.
9:17 am
he has spent a lot of money, increased salaries. the military was depleted before he took over and really just ramming against that story he saw saying it is fake news. your thoughts? >> jessica: he says everything is fake news. we have the president on record calling john john mccain a loser. he doesn't like people who got captured, there are hundreds of thousands of soldiers who are buried and given honors because they got captured and showed the level of bravery john mccain did. at a rally after john mccain's funeral, he said, i didn't get a thank you for that. you are a con, a gold-star parent talking about how donald trump feels about the military. i respect john bolton's account, but this is so much more -- yeah, he's still talking, not that donald trump suddenly woke up and decided he liked the military. what the --
9:18 am
>> melissa: i think he's always been outspoken about loving the military, jessica, you fell off a cliff there. katie, go ahead. >> jessica: saying i love the military and calling john mccain a loser do not work with one another. that is impossible. he didn't get veterans choice passed, approximate president obam obam obam -- no, the words in that story mimic what donald trump says all the time. he calls people losers and suckers and mocks the disabled. a part where he says i don't want amputees in the military, who wants to look at that. look at that one, she's a beauty. it sounds exactly like him, you can't deny it. >> melissa: okay. ica katie. >> katie: there were many political disagreements with the
9:19 am
way john mccain voted on healthcare. john mccain was not a big fan of the president running for the white house in the first place, that was a political issue, not reflection of how the president feels about the military. the journalistic integrity or lack thereof. the media's credibility is in the toilet because of pieces like this. there are plenty of officials who could go on record and does not like the way the president operated, who could talk about all the things they claim are true. it is all anonymously sourced. in journalism, you reserve anonymous details for people who could be persecuted for speaking out against corruption or serious wrongdoing that should not be reserved as we've seen over and over again with pieces on russia and other hit pieces on the president for political operatives who don't want to be revealed.
9:20 am
they are too cowardly to say things on the record. general keith kellogg said it was not true, sarah sanders said it was not true. the weather was bad that day, all evidence points to this being -- completely false. he could here is why they use anonymous sources. >> they don't want to be inundated with anonymous tweets and we push hard and have you to do this reporting with more belted suspender approach. dotted i's and crossed t's. this is a judgment call. does the public interest in needing this information outweigh the ambiguo ambiguitie anonymous sources and i decided i thought i knew this information well enough from
9:21 am
multiple sources that i thought we should put it out. >> melissa: charles, what is your reaction to that? >> charles: i mean, just so bogus, so bs. i will piggyback off what katie said, we should flush journalistic integrity and make it official. kennedy's point, four anonymous people who missed out on half a million to a million dollars. i would take a million dollars if the only thing i had to worry about was mean tweets. anonymous figures didn't get in line to get a big paycheck like everyone else upset with president trump, i don't believe it, no, i don't. >> melissa: yeah, i don't know, you could fill a stadium with people who are happy to go on record against the president, meanwhile democratic joe biden will speak out, what he is expected to say next.

>> melissa: president trump speaking earlier at the white house. the economy added $1.37 million jobs in august, according to the labor department, which says unemployment rate fell to 8.4%, lowest since the pandemic struck back in march. president trump tweeting, great jobs numbers, wow, better than expected. broke the 10% level faster and deeper than thought possible. democratic nominee joe biden is expected to speak soon in wilmington, delaware. his camp says he will accuse president trump of making the economic downturn worse by failing to get the coronavirus under control. katie, i will start with you. the number of folks cited that 10% number. i have lay people saying that to me, who aren't deeply involved in politics, if unemployment got close to 10%, it would not hurt
9:27 am
the president. this seems to be a conventional wisdom point. what do you think? >> katie: yeah, this is really good news for the american people and for the president, considering he's been saying for months we'll get the economy back on track, he's been saying it is going to be a v recovery and the numbers match up to what he's been promising and really going to come down to politically what each candidate has in terms for the future. joe biden wanted to implement taxes and more regulation, the president talked about doing the opposite. two big contrasts. the issue for joe biden is what would he have done differently if he's going to accuse president trump of doing things and making it worse, especially when you had him saying he would shut the economy down again, that is what we did in march and the numbers were as terrific as they were early in the summer. it is good for the country we're seeing a recovery. >> melissa: kennedy, the other
9:28 am
thing joe biden would do, i heard him talking yesterday, he would spend a bunch more money. he talked about the fact that we kept the great recession from turning into the great depression by putting forward the big bill, the shovel ready jobs money, weren't shovel-ready jobs, but giant spending the obama-biden administration did. do you think that would have been a better solution? >> kennedy: there was mri plento shovel, that is for sure. the former vice president rememberss the recovery was very, very slow and we had a segment economy for years, so if that is the kind of economy joe biden is going to give us, i say no thank you. and he's talking about spending all this money, trillions and trillions of dollars and only going to raise taxes on those making $400,000 a year, that will never supply tax receipts
9:29 am
necessary to support this kind of spending, which is wildly irresponsible, so he's going to have to raise taxes on middle class or have to be honest about that, i think we're going to have another good jobs report from september. you'll see it in october and that -- imagine where the economy could go with kids back in school. >> melissa: yeah. charles, the obama-biden recovery was slowest on record according to the if the reserve ever, since they have been keeping records. your thoughts? >> charles: ever, ever. what happened in the last month, black americans, 367,000 went back to work, asian americans 187,000 went back to work. hispanic americans, 1 million went back to work last month. one million. we are heading in the right direction, getting there faster than anyone thought we could. president trump needs to get

9:35 am
as much information as we should and hopefully it will trickle out faster than a lot of the other cases like what is going on in kenosha, where we don't have the full report about jacob blake. i do know it is important both sides be very clear about condemnation of violence. we have lost people from the right and from the left, no good no matter what. heartened to see joe biden talking about this forcefully. i want to make sure the bipartisan point is emphasized and unacceptable for people to be losing their life and get the full report on the takedown last night and what ties to groups he may have had. >> melissa: don't you think good idea for joe biden to go to portland and tell the protesters and rioters and looters and agitators to calm down? >> jessica: yeah, i think so, it was valuable to see him in kenosha yesterday. if you are making the case you are going to be the candidate
9:36 am
that brings calm to the u.s., what polls are expecting, people think joe biden's america will be safer than donald trump's. debbie dingell in michigan is calling for joe biden to make his presence felt for lawless and rioting and social justice movements. >> melissa: i agree with you, that is a good idea. i don't know if i see that happening for the nation's most famous basement dweller, but katie, there is -- what? there is a big shift in the way democrats are now talking, they are acknowledging the violence, they are acknowledging the looting and they have made a big turn. do you think that is working for them? >> jessica: well, democrats have only acknowledged this on a serious repetitive level because the polling showed that it was going to be an issue and president trump has bridged the gap in a number of swing states
9:37 am
in wisconsin and pennsylvania as a result of democrats just ignoring the idea that rioting actually does devastate the lives of minority communities and the very people they claim to be standing up for. joe biden is way behind the curve on this and it is tra transparent they were doing this because polling showed it was bad for them. meanwhile, the president for 100 days tomorrow, has been calling for calm and providing additional backup and federal law enforcement to actually stop these things from occurring, that has been rejected by democratic governors. katie. >> kennedy: charles, when does it stop? >> charles: that's a great question. i'm not sure. appeasement has embolden these folks. glad if it took polls to nudge biden toward conciliatory actions, the cities and states where they encourage this stuff and keep looking the other way,
9:38 am
hypocrisy of having police in your neighborhood or moving out of your neighborhood while allowing other people to do this is ridiculous. in the meantime, americans are fleeing cities and states and the consequence of this are going to be felt for many years to come. it is a step in the right direction, has to be more forceful. >> kennedy: it will get worse this weekend. counter factions will face off in the city of roses and neighboring law enforcement agencies have said, we are not helping out, we will not send in our officers. white house officials pushing back after critics accuse president trump of telling supporters to illegally vote twice in the november election. that discussion is next.

if on election day or early voting, that is not tabulated and counted, you go vote. if for some reason after that, shouldn't take that long, it comes in, they will not be able to tabulate it because you will have voted. >> kennedy: president trump again telling reporters who vote by mail to follow-up at the polling place on election day. critics say president trump encouraged people to vote twice, which is illegal. kayleigh mcenany says they are taking president out of context. >> the president is not suggesting anyone do anything unlawful, he said make sure the vote is tabulated, if it is not, then vote. >> melissa: chief of staff mark meadows says president trump was not urging people to cast twice, but to cast provisional ballots if they learn their mail-in ballots were not reported.
9:44 am
melissa, how will they know if their ballots were not recorded on election day? >> melissa: this brings up an interesting question, a lot of people are asking this right nonow the truth is it depends on how your particular state or city does it. we are all wondering. martha maccallum said she sent for absentee ballot, but in her state, they are automatically sending out ballots, she expects to get two. people asked me, if you get an absentee ballot and mail it in, how do you know they receive it on time. kayleigh mcenany explained there is a digital process by which you can go in and see if your vote has been received. i do know that it varies from state to state and i'm really concerned about if you send in some other ballot, if it's going to count. as a result, a lot of people are
9:45 am
focused ongoing in person and doing it themselves because they're unsure how the system works. i think the president did clarify what he was talking about, but it does kind of highlight that point, even though i'm someone who got an absentee ballot mailed to me, i'm concerned if i follow the directions properly, will it make it in time, will it be counted? it is worrisome. >> i have a bad feeling about this, charles. [laughter] >> charles: i do, too. i'm voting in person. by the way, be careful, there are big nuances between absentee voting, voting by mail and early voting, three distinct different things. in fact, voting by mail declined in the last presidential election, the idea it is easy and the systems are ridgeit enough to handle this, not sure if they can handle the massive vote by mail. the that being said, i feel like this is taken out of context
9:46 am
nothing burger stories to be frank, could fill up entire day, if you want to misconstrue things trump and biden says could do that all day long and get off track, we have a very important day coming up real soon. >> melissa: jessica, is it a nothing burger and are you hungry? >> jessica: starving actually, would love a burger. >> me, too. >> jessica: real cow meat, not impossible meat, for those who say that is all liberals eat, not true. i don't happen to think this is a nothing burger. >> charles: yeah. >> jessica: this is not a nothing burger story, it is not just the president who said it, w says a lot of things that don't make sense. the attorney general sat down and said he didn't know it was a felony in all 50 states to cast two ballots and went on to make up incredible story about a man who filled out 1700 ballots.
9:47 am
