she tweeted "we have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the u.s., hamas, israel, afghanistan, and the taliban. she then later tried to walk it back insisting she wasn't equating terrorist organizations with democratic countries that have well-established judicial systems. the republicans are claiming a double standard is clearly at work. they are demanding to know why speaker pelosi is still keeping her on the has foreign affairs committee. take a listen. >> we need to see more democrats in congress speaking out. we need speaker pelosi to remove her from the committee. ilhan omar shouldn't have been appointed to the committee and the first place. this has nothing to do with religion, ethnicity, race, gender, political party. this has to do with her as a member of congress putting out all of this anti-american propaganda. there should be a had a political price be paid. we all know that if ilhan omar

was a republican, pelosi would be the one leading the fight to hold her accountable. >> gillian: all of this is unfolding as president biden is out of the country on his first foreign trip as commander in chief. he met with leaders in the u.k. today to kick off the g summit. hi, jackie. >> hey, jillian. when that group of 12 jewish democratic lawmakers put out that letter to congresswoman omar demanding to clarify why she appeared to equate the u.s. and israel with terror groups, congressman omar's initial reaction was to slam her colleagues. she also accused them of these and is. after nancy pelosi backed them and asking her to explain, members of the squad lashed out at democrats in the media saying that her views were deliberately disregarded, abetting targeted attacks on her.
8:03 am
rashida tlaib wrote "freedom of speech doesn't exist for muslim women in congress. the benefit of the doubt does not exist for muslim women in congress. has democratic leadership should be ashamed." we can't ignore a right wing media echo chamber that is deliberately and routinely attacked a black what muslim women in congress. one of the democrats he wrote that letter says there isn't anyone else to blame. speak out if you make comments like these, you need to be held accountable for them. i would think that applies to all members of congress, democrats and republicans. i don't think there is anybody to blame. i think you just have to be held accountable for your words. >> he said that he was to democratic leadership asked omar to explain. he was also happy that she did. she did walk that comment back saying she wasn't drawing a

ilhan omar's words. she said i was not at all equating the u.s. and israel with terrorist groups hamas and the taliban. we just pulled up her tweets twice. it seems like that was precisely what she was doing. the entire point of the entire tweet. right? >> 100%. it is good that democrat leaders are finally speaking out about this, but it is too little, too late. she doesn't need to clarify her comments. she needs to be removed. nobody who thinks that israel and the united states are the equivalent of the town abandon hamas in terms of the atrocities they have committed deserves to be sitting on the has foreign affairs committee. her explanation now that she wasn't equating countries with judicial systems like the united states and israel with groups like hamas and the taliban is completely untrue. the context of her remarks -- she was questioning -- the tweet came out when she was questioning antony blinken about why the u.s. won't allow the

international criminal court, which is an illegitimate u.n. court that the u.s. is not a part of. to investigate and try service members for war crimes in afghanistan. if she believes they have a great judicial system that hold people accountable, then why is she pushing for an icc investigation by an illegitimate u.n. court that could actually try and jail american service members war crimes? >> gillian: i am going to pull on a thread that you mentioned. the even bigger context -- omar's comments, on the heels of one of the worst streams of anti-semitic comments we had seen in decades. it is hard to decouple her criticism of israel and of the jewish people from the violence that we are seeing in u.s. cities across the nation, is it not? >> no doubt. first of all, democratic

different. twitter is having an epic meltdown after disgraced cnn legal analyst made his first on-air appearance back at the network. since the new yorker fired him after a zoom meeting debacle. he says he accidentally exposed himself to his colleagues. take a listen to part of his apology. >> i have spent the seven subsequent months miserably. i can certainly confess. i've been trying to be a better person. i have tried, and i am trying now, to say how sorry i am. i have a lot to rebuild, but i feel very privileged and very lucky that i'm going to be able to try to do that. >> gillian: critics are shredding cnn for bringing him back on air. one tweeting "this man must have had dirt on somebody with power. this is just beyond." jeffrey t then is the definition of liberal privilege. any conservative man would have lost his job.

this was a disgusting ridiculous thing that is not something that people do. people don't do this. if anybody else had done this, i think that i would change my name and move to another country. that would be the only option that you or i would have. the woman did that? absolutely would not have a career. >> gillian: in the spirit of being generous, we have to look at the other side. what about giving disgraced people second chances? >> right. i understand that, but this is a truly wild type of thing to have happened where you are thinking to yourself am i living in a simulation? this is not just his second chance. he has a repeated pattern of creepy behavior when it comes to the same area of his life. >> gillian: have to ask you.

this is a question i have not heard anybody ask but it's really important. what if this had happened in the workplace? lord knows we have all had to make adjustments during the pandemic and have learned how to be professional and abide by certain codes of conduct while we are working from home. what if this incident had happened at work? where would we be? >> who knows. there is also an argument to say that this was at work. it was on a zoom video call. it is also not that tough. i know camera sign. people can figure that out. children figure it out all the time. they are getting out of classes for the resumes glow. they figure out the cameras in first grade. this is a chief legal analyst. >> gillian: i want to move on to our other story at the day about great men doing great things. disgraced former democratic congressman anthony weiner has
