todd piro is here with the latest. todd? >> todd: steve and ainsley we are learning that shaeed woodard and brown were already dread. williams survived the kidnapping and back in the u.s. all four traveled from south carolina to mexico so mcgee could get a tummy tuck procedure. mcgee's mother giving update she is doing okay. she was crying. she watched two of them die. they died in front of her. this photo in the scene shows mcgee in the back of the ambulance after she was rescued by mexican authorities. she'll and eric james women's crossed the border and brought to a hospital in texas shortly after they were safe. the victims all held hostage in this small shack located in a rural part of eastern mexico where officials say they likely got lost and carttled members may have mistaken them from road haitian drug smugglers. mexican police arresting a mexican national in connection with the violent kidnapping. that suspect identified as jose

found out about the kidnapping online. and they didn't know that they were americans until they saw the license plate so they called u.s. authorities. you know what the mexican authorities did they used surveillance cameras in the area to determine the number of cartel vehicles involved in the attack. so if the guy outside the wooden shed where they were keeping the two survivors was not from a cartel it would be amazing because obviously they used the cartel camera to figure out who everybody was. >> ainsley: yesterday, when we heard mexico, we instantly thought spring breakers. a lot of people go down to mexico for spring is break. the u.s. government is warning all of you if you have plans to go to mexico to avoid the cartel hot spots amid the spike in violence. travel agents are reporting the post pandemic boom. they are saying numbers are very similar to the pre-pandemic year, pre2020, so if you are going down there, be very careful. these individuals were from the

and texas congressman dan crenshaw and the congressman from the state that brian is in, in florida, michael waltz, recently introduced a bill giving the president authority to use u.s. military against the mexican cartels. if the mexican cartels, ainsley, had that kind of threat hey, you know what? if we grab people across the border they might send a cruise missile at us or something maybe they wouldn't do it. >> ainsley: lindsey graham is working on legislation too because he represents south carolina where these victims lived, resided. when you hear her say we are at a record low for fentanyl. >> steve: crazy. >> ainsley: it is not true, like you said, steve. in 2022, cbp says they seized almost 15,000 pounds. the year before that 11,200 pounds. it's graze that they are seizing that. if the numbers are increasing in what they are seizing, i'm sure the numbers are increasing in what is actually making across the border that they aren't

mistaken for haitian smugglers. this is all highlighting the dangers of the drug cartels that are operating just across the border. texas department of public safety lieutenant chris olivares joins us now. good morning, lieutenant. >> good morning, ainsley, thanks for having me on. >> thanks for coming on. this was a shocker yesterday when we learned of this news. some americans go across the border. they go to mexico mainly for vacation. they were there for a medical procedure. this happened just across the border. what do americans need to know about this threat. >> one thing we are telling, of course, anybody that is wanting to travel to mexico try to refrain from traveling to mexico now. too dangerous. too much crime as far as with the cartels operating in mexico. especially not morass the gulf cartel operates smaller groups of enforcement groups that pretty much carry out attacks

within those groups several groups fighting within each other. because of that the violence has increased in that particular area. we talk about the haitians. one thing to keep in mind too. those cartel groups are recruiting meigss for organized crime. because of that any part of mexico from these dangerous cartels. >> this just is a good reminder of why our border security is so important because these cartels are so close to america that is one thing with spring break coming up. visitors not only in texas but out of state that travel to that particular part of mexico matamoros one thing we are trying to tell our people trying to travel to those areas is do

not go into mexico to stay away from mexico before historically that was a place to be. everybody would want to go to mexico for the restaurant and the clubs and the bars that were there. in case now, with the violence that's taking place within miles of the texas-mexico border, it's very dangerous to go into mexico right now. these cartels don't care as far as who they are dealing with and who is coming across. we saw on that video just they weren't worried. they weren't worried about the military. they weren't worried about the police. they were taking their time to, you know, kidnap the female and also recover the bodies. that's very rare and i have fortunate that the female and the other male that were released that survived this vicious attack actually were released by the cartels because in most cases the cartels would not allow anybody to survive. they would not leave any victims or evidence behind. but, in this case they realized that they actually made a mistake. they shot at u.s. citizens and they are going to receive pressure from both sides from mexico and the u.s. >> ainsley: lieutenant. thank you so much for coming on this morning and thank you for what you do. >> appreciate it, ainsley.

companies lay people off since the beginning of this year. american company are very resilient they are almost planning ahead for the fact that we could possibly go into a recession at the latter part of 2023. in fact facebook which is now meta is planning on coming out with more layoffs by the end of this week. amazon, disney. have already laid people off since the beginning of this year. overcompensating bringing people on board. almost overhired because such a competitive market and now they are laying people off. remember, the unemployment rate actually comes out friday. we will see what it says. that's a lagging indicator. every time we get the number. every time the administration talks about the number. it's retroactive with something that happened in the past. eventually it's going to catch up to it where we will see that number tick up and it could be this friday and in you could see another negative reaction in the stock market by the end of this week. >> steve: here is the head of the fed talking about raising rates yesterday. watch.

>> come in stronger than expected. which suggests that the ultimate level of interest rates is likely to be higher than previously anticipated. if the totality of the data were to indicate that faster tightening is warranted, we would be prepared to increase the pace of rate hikes. >> steve: okay. so, increase the pace, increase the amount. ultimately, if you have anything on credit, it's going to cost you more and it's going to make it much harder to buy a house. >> first of all, i think anybody that wanted to buy a house probably bought a house when the boom happened. you could have sold your house and made tons of money. >> steve: if you could find something. >> a lot of people down sized. people wanted to retire early. things like that. or move to a cheaper state. obviously people are moving around a lot across the country after covid that played a part in it. by the end of the year see mortgage rates 8%. years ago they used to be 9 and 10. when my parents bought their first house i think it was 13%. >> steve: i remember 18% during the carter years. >> 8% is cheap for you.
