1:44 pm
tell the folks at home why. >> i think bret's a question was right on target. if you look at the exit polling for the last election, the failure to address inflation the creation of inflation is what destroyed the biden presidency and killed the harris candidacy. this is that mandate for voters. tariffs and do add cost. tariffs are taxes. their taxes on trade. there's a question about who ends up paying the full bill, how much consumers, how much producers et cetera. but it is a cost. this is going to make goods more expensive. now, if you are looking to be optimistic the recent negotiations with canada and mexico, people wondering does the president want tariffs for their own sake or as a tool to encourage federal policy in certain places? these tariffs may not be forever. they may not be negotiated tools

1:46 pm
of a ploy for a little tactic you do have to be measured and how you roll out the tariffs, do you agree? >> into your point is a good not butnot great economy. the job market, still a lot of positions available for people who want them. but it is slowing. it is softening. solid but getting softer as we start the trump era here. i think maintaining economic growth and the animal spirit that's the optimism of people in business wanting to invest a pretty wanting to create and try new things. tariffs going up just like the regregulations or things that discourage those things so obviously he's very aggressively looking to cut government regulation for that's a plus for the economy. very welcome in the markets wall street, main street but the tariffs are a concern.
1:47 pm
i think to the extent to people in business see them as negotiating tools and not as a permanent long-term costs he is a better off in the economy probably does better as well. >> i suspect that's what they are going to be. we have seen what's already happened not just respect to canada and mexico but in other areas. sometimes that's all it takes is the threat of a tariff or it may be the temporary pain of some reciprocal tariffs and people do either come to heal or they get to the table and try to negotiate. americans have been unfairly treated as it relates to some tariffs around the globe and we need look no further than canada and derry for example. why would you charge americans three 100% for our dairy products were yours come here basically for nothing? so i think his point is be fair or else we will match tariffs. and perhaps it's a negotiating ploy. we'll all have to find out
