generousity. tim: it has been a busy thanksgiving day for tow truck operators and traffic patrols. a sheet of freezing rain followed by a couple inches of fresh snow made driving a challenge for some. in the metro about 2 inches of the white stuff came down. reminder that it's important to clear all car windowns before hitting the road. tim: for those who had to get from point "a" to point "b" .... it still requires less than two-dollars a gallon to fill up. gas stations we checked with were selling at a dollar 92 a gallon. with prices under 2 dollars a gallon... triple "a" says 2015 could end up being the first year since 2003 that the year started and ended with prices under 2 bucks a gallon. industry experts say drivers can expect the trend of lower prices to continue throgh 2016. tim: despite the cold and wet weather, hundreds of runners in downtown des moines kicked off another thanksgiving tradition... and this one had nothing to do with eatting.

just after 9 this morning the annual turkey trot hit the streets of downtown. runners worked their way through the east village near the capitol and back. most said they were out in the cold so they could start the holiday on the right foot.... although im pretty sure some used thier "left"... turkey may not have been part of the event.... but runners did pick up a free all-you- can-eat pancake breakfast at the end of the run..... saving turkey for a bit later. tim: also in des moines today, governor branstad joined members of the plymouth congregational united church of christ to deliver a proclamation. surrounded by the clergy, deacons, and choir members who dressed in authentic pilgrim costumes to celebrate thanksgiving day.... the governor acknowledged the challenges faced by iowans. "thanksgiving day is a time for us to gather as friends and family and express our apperceation for the challenges that we have met and the many blessings that are families communies and state have experinced," said governor branstad. tim:

church members start thanksgiving every year with this traditrional celebration. tim: a large helping of national security was on the menu in new york city today just two weeks after deadly terror attacks in paris france, giant balloons crowded the air over midtown manhattan for the 89th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade. marching bands, floats giant balloons paraded through the heart of the city. due to an increased threat alert, a record number of police officers were on hand serving as added security for the event. sot de blasio: "the people of ny are feeling safe & secure by voting with their feet and being out here. the people of nyc are not intimidated." department of homeland security secretary jeh johnson was in ny to watch the parade, telling new yorkers that terrorism can't prevail if people refuse to be terrorized meanwhile, american astronauts aboard the international space station celebrated the holiday with some candied yams. tim:

nearly 47 million americans hit the road this holiday season. them are the country right through the heartland. reporter brad douglas flagged a couple of drivers down in see where their adventures are taking them " reporting, "you i've found that one of the best things about the i-44 rest stop in joplin is. you have an endless supply of off the road and and i found some good ones tonight." steve moffat is from tulsa and he's headed to kansas city. but before he got there he had to pull over because he's got a van full of weak bladders. so who's got the weakest? steve moffat, traveling with dogs, "probably my wife. i'm the one that needs to stop quicker than all of them though so." he's traveling with his three dogs marshal, thao and oscar. and he says transporting dogs are tough when it's hours on end. steve moffat, traveling with dogs, "it's probably a little challenging with dogs just because they need to stop more often than than humans do."

the siouxland autism support group. tim: christmas trees again fill the south dakota state capitol in pierre. the 2015 grand lighting ceremony kicks off the holiday season at the capitol. the capitol christmas display includes nearly 100 trees that are decorated by volunteers from communities, schools, churches, nonprofit organizations and state government offices. this year's theme is "christmas around the world." the largest tree in the capitol is a 29-foot colorado blue spruce that had to be trimmed just to fit inthe capitol. tim: drones are fast the hot ticket hoping to find this hoiday with drones are now increasing in popularity. conflict. as the personal hobby has become commercial airplanes pilots. abc's brandi hitt reports. tomorrow's the big game the undefeated iowa hawkeyes are taking on their rivals to the west, the nebraska cornhuskers who are hoping to play siler to the hawyeye's perfect season. but for those of you headed out to memorial stadium for the hy-vee heroes game,

there may be some things you want to keep in mind. the game is scheduled to kick off at 2:30pm tomorrow, but due to an increase in security officials are asking fans to show up to memorial stadium a bit earlier. big bags or backpacks are not being allowed in the stadium and officials are encouraging folks to keep other unecessary items at home or in the car. students planning on attending the heroes game say the added security efforts at memorial welcome, some of the recent threats around the world. with recent events want to increase doesn't make me fear fearful of going to the game or anything like that police will have increased security at doors and gates at the stadium. and don't be surprised if they ask you to open your jackets and coats at the gate authorities want to know there is no specific threat against the game, it's just a precaution due to recent overseas. .

from pound puppy to k-9 officer... reporter jannay towne explains how one five-year-old boy helped an abandoned pooch get a job on the ankeny police force "(tristan, raised money for bosco) "hi bosco." five-year-old tristan sommerfeld helped welcome the newest member of the ankeny police force, bosco the tracking dog. "if you don't pay attention he'll grab something that he should not be playing with, like a shoe, quite enough frequently." tristan wants to be a police officer when he grows up and has already found a way to give back to his community. (amber sommerfeld, tristan's mother) "for his birthday, tristan's birthday in october, rather than asking for gifts from friends and family, we asked for donations for the k-9 fund." the five year old donated 1,500 to the canine fund, others followed suite. to date, the city has raised about 30,000- dollars to bring bosco from a rescue shelter in indiana to ankeny. (chief gary mikulec, ankeny police dept.) "he can find missing persons, he's also trained to find drugs." (officer bret lappin, ankeny police dept.) "we've had some cases in the past where people have gone missing and having a dog that can track is going to be very helpful." handler, bret lappin, a four-year-veteran of the department is ready to put boscos nose to work. your age i wanted to be a police officer too." thanks to support from the community. (amber sommerfeld, tristan's mother) "it's paying it forward and gifting community and the superheroes we call the police and the serve. a way of showing their appreciation to the good guys.
