to school monday. that students is now being charged with carrying a concealed weapon.. the gun was identified as a 25- caliber phoenix arms pistol . authorities say the gun was in a lock-box at the child's home....but he was able to obtain the combination. according to police...the student showed the gun to a friend....whtold his parents...whom later notified the school. the child was apprehended at the school....where the weapon was found in his possession. dr. gauzman..says he chose not t t lock the school down...because school officials did not believe the student posed a threat. "we had what we believed to be the threat immediately detained and neutralized and felt that the best step was to begin the school day. you can't do a lockdown and allow someone in the building. we don't believe th in the initial conversaions that we had that there was the intent to bring a weapon into school to do harm to any other student or any other staff member, that doesn't make is any less serious to us." said dr. paul gausman, superintendent of sioux city community schools the student is now suspended....

completes an investigation on the issue.. which could last up to 45 days. the district says it will follow board policies...and the district's student code of conduct regarding the incident. according to the district's policy, the student could face explusion from the school for one year. dr. gauzman says, it's not clear why the student brought the gun to school. now. some parents have expressed ncerns over not being notified about the incident immediately. coming up at six... we'll hear from one of those parents. jenna: an accident on i-29 backed up traffic for quite sometime early this morning... around 6:50, a southbound car ran out of gas and couldn't pull onto the shoulder because of construction.n. then, an oncoming car hit the vehicle,e,locking both lanesf traffic near the

exit. two people were taken to mercy hosptal with minor injuries. no charges have been immediately filed. tim: an improperly disposed cigarette is to blame for monday's fire at sneaky's chicken in sioux city. that's the word today from sioux city fire rescue. six units and 18 firefighters responded to the big in a storage area at the back of the business. owner dave ferris tells us the restaurant will be closed for several weeks for cleaning and repairs. sneaky's catering will continue operations from a different location. jenna: the kind of cold we've been experiencing... can be downright dangerous... especially if you don't have a warm place to go. elisa raffa has some tips for staying warm yourself... and how folks in sioux city are taking care of people who can't keep themselves warm. "you'll start having some numbness or tingling of your fingers or toes or ears. you may get some redness of the area, and then it may turn white or might get kinda of waxy hard looking" says cindy lewin, nurse practitioner. lewin says babies, the elderly, and anyone with other health concerns are at greater risk. alcohol and dehydration also make you more suseptable. "you want to slowly warm your extremities, so you want to put them in a warm tepid water. you don't want to put it in hot wawar, you don't want to use like a blow dryer ornything. then that will bring the tissue back and you'lll have less chance of having damage to the tissue" says cindy lewin, nurse practitioner. the people who run local homeless shelters take this time of year especially serious. the sioux city gospel mission opens this "day room" when the temperatures are this cold. "with the wind chill factor and things like that, we just kind of keep it open so that individuals can come in, because we don't really want people to be outside in the cold" says dayle webbs, director, men's ministries at gospel missions. in addition to a warm place,e,he gospel mission makes hats, gloves and scarves available to people who come in. "especially when you see that someone is cold, and they may not have shoes or a coat or things like that, to have the priviledge to have a thrift store across the street and to be able to go over and to provide those basic necessities to

sioux city's hospitals also keep their doors open when it's dangerously cold. mercy medical center allows people to use their cafeteria to warm up during the day... when temps dip below 10 degrees. tim: after a slow start, the flu season is striking big time in iowa. according to the iowa department of public health, there have been four flu-related deaths since november of 2015. iowa has three strains going around.. including the h-1- n-1 that was really serious in 2009. school-aged kids are more prone to that strain. health officials are warnrng anyone who hasnt got their flu shot- to do so because it should make a difference . " it could be a pretty bad year because two of the strains

serious lness. the good news is the vaccine seems to be a good match for the strains, unlike last year where it wasnt as good for one of the strains" tim: of course some things to keep in mind to fight the flu... make sure to get a flu shot... take preventive action, such as avoiding those who are si and washing your hands. if your doctor prescribes you medication...make sure to take it... and if you show symptoms, make sure to get some rest. jenna: today governor terry branstad delivered the 2016 condition of the state address. the governor says the state has made some signaficant progress since 20-10. he highlighted over 214-thousand jobs have been added in the state, and the unemployment added in the state, and the unemployment rate has been cut nearly in half. currently it stands at 3 point 4 percent; back in 20-10 it was over 6 percent. he also highlighted iowa's education funding is up 35 percent. gov. terry branstad

tim: facebook c-e-o mark zuckerberg is getting both support and backlash after posting a photo of his baby daughter, as she was about to get her vaccinations. andrew spencer explains.
