speech. fighting for the rights of of all people. .and on this day, we commemorate the legendary baptist minister who lead the civil rights movement. jenna: good evening and thank you for joining us tonight im jenna rehnstrom tim and im tim seaman. across siouxland people are remembering and honoring dr. martin luther king jr. jenna: as abc'9 reporter bria bell shows us it was a celebration of thought, word and deed here in sioux city. bria: the celebration consisted of singing, dancing, and unity as students and community leaders from all walks of life came together to celebrate martin luther king jr day. "don't be afraid to be who you are. you are a person first, and the color is second and it shouldn't make any difference," said drake. sioux city celebrated martin luther king, jr. day at bishop helen with words from alumni who shared their experiences growing up bi- racial... "during my years of private school, i recognized there were very few students that looked like me. when i started high school, i began to see and feel the racial

were muted and unsaid, said clark. cultural and spiritual performances were preformed by students across the district... and although sioux city schools were in session on the federal holiday, the superintendent said the district uses the day to teach students about the history of different groups of people. "this is a day of respect and education about civil rights, about the different cultures that make us up," said gausman. city hl offices were also open today, but that won't be the case next year. starting in 2017 sioux city will officially recognize the day. "well you know we said as long as we can negotiate it into a contract, we wanted it to be a holiday. i think martin luther king deserves that and we were able to be succesful in that. so, this will be the last time that it won't be a holiday. it'll be a holiday from now on and the coming yeyes,said scott. bria: for those who were unable to attend earlier celbrations honoring dr. king, mount zion missionary baptist church will be continuing the celebration

label a game on january 18 as a must win. but for a team that had conference championship aspirations, like iowa state, tonight's battle with oklahoma might be just that. a loss tonight against the top- ranked sooners would put the cyclones a full three games back in the race for the big twelve, with contests looming against kansas and west virginia over the next two weeks. isu dropped an 87- 83 contest to oklahoma to open up conference play, but luckily the series shifts to hilton coliseum tonight. the clones have beaten the sooners four straight trips to ames, including last year's rally from 21 down early in the

we'll see whether hilton magic will be on full display or not in just about an hour and a half. tip off is at 8 in ames and the game can be seen on espn. we'll of course have full highlights for you tonight at ten. across the state, the hawkeyes are 5-0 in big ten play for the first time since the 1996-97 season after yesterday's 82-71 win over michigan. iowa has now won 7 straight games overall and 11 straight in conference dating back to last season. that's their longest such streak since the 1969-70 season and they say it's not a fluke. adam woodbury--"i wouldn't say surprised, because every night out we're expecting to win. and that's the mindset you've got to have playing against the big ten and obviously some people are going to be surprised with the 5-0 start, but we're confident in our abilities and what we're able to do." next up for the hawkeyes is lowly rutgers, who's 0-5 in conference play...so any potential for a trap game,oach mccaffery?

finally, the latest high school basketball poll was released this afternoon as well. seven siouxland teams made the cut in the top ten across three classes, with five others receiving votes. we'll start with class 1a...boyden-hull is up one place to third while south o'brien breaks into the rankings at 10. ar-we-va, mvao and hms are all receiving votes. in 2a...western christian is nearly unanimous at the top...ridge view moves up from 10th to night and sioux center, is receiving votes this week. in 3a, spirit lake jumped two places to fourth and heelan broke back into the poll at number 8. moc-floyd valley dropped a place and spencer is now on the outside looking in. no area teams are ranked in class 4a.
