for joining us this saturday morning. i'm mark taylor. let's talk about the weather forecast right now with chris. i want to lay something out there right now. if you or i win this powerball, 70/30? >> i'm not greedy. i'll take whatever you give me. doppler 4000 this morning tracking light snow, probably more just some flurries out there. but there are a few snow showers in the high country and just coming out of wyoming, a few spritzes of snow around the north and east side of fort collins. this is not a big deal, maybe not even accumulating. this is some light activity. it's a cold start, 6 degrees with only about a half mile visibility. that's because of some patchy fog across colorado this morning.

place, especially the boulder area. you're sitting around the quarter mile visibility and some of that fog extends out toward eerie. a little foggy situation also in northern douglas county this morning. here is the benefit of the fog and low clouds, kept our temperatures up. keeps that radiational cooling from happening during the overnight hours. we are waking up in the upper teens in many places, a few low 20s without the clouds and fog. coming up, we have a clearing outlook in the forecast and a warming trend. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. breaking overnight in arapahoe county, two men are on the run after robbing a gas station with a gun. it happened at the western convenience store on south parker road. two men walked into the store with a silver handgun and demanded money from the cashier. nobody was hurt. developing now, the death

homicide and now authorities are investigating. 50-year-old michael marshall was homeless and had mental illness and heart disease. two months ago he was arrested for trespassing in denver. he became aggressive in custody and was physically restrained by deputies. he died nine days later and his family wants justice. >> all i can imagine is my uncle suffering, his last moments on this earth, how scared he was. >> reporter: according to michael marshall's autopsy report, the 50-year-old died partially as a result of complications of positional asphyxia due to physical restraint by law enforcement, meaning marshall couldn't breathe properly when he was several minutes. warned the sheriff's department as well as police of positional asphyxia before, following this incident in 2014 where a denver

by kneeling on the back of his neck for several minutes. >> they cannot continue to get away with the same crimes that the community wouldn't be able to get away with. >> reporter: the coroner ruled the death a homicide but that doesn't mean murder. but that's what his family is calling this case. >> we want to see the video. we want to see the evidence of the murder that is described in this coroner's report. >> reporter: the sheriff says that will happen once the da is finished using it for their investigation. >> we are committed to the marshall family to show them the video before it is released to the general public, and we are committed to making changes. >> we are told the deputies involved are still working but not allowed to have contact with inmates. the da's office will decide what if any charges should be

also this morning, the latest on the world's most notorious drug lord, el chapo. authorities are asking for him to be extradited to the u.s. he was captured during a shootout in mexico yesterday after being on the run for nearly six months after his second prison escape from a facility in mexico. the drug cartel controls nearly half all illegal drugs. someone could become very wealthy tonight, the biggest jackpot in history at $800 million. with sales today, that number could go up even higher. it might be a good thing to not have all that money. >> reporter: customers are buying powerball tickets by the fistful, filled with the belief a win will buy them happiness.

game in a row last night against the predators. tyson's goal brought the avs ahead for good, final 5-3. they are on the road in chicago tomorrow night, puck drops at 5:00 p.m. mountain. new video of a world record attempt. thousands of people hit the slopes yesterday in hopes of breaking the record for the most people getting ski and snow board lessons at the same time. more than 160 resorts took part with people of all ages. >> definitely learning. it's not as easy as i remembered it to be so i'm just kind of trying to do my best and like not fall as much as i am. >> all the resorts are tallying their numbers and sending them to the organization. the official total should be announced soon.

we have a live look outside, just 20 degrees on this saturday morning. hopefully we're in for a warmup eventually, chris. >> good morning. eventually is the keyword there. waking up a little bit cloudier and foggier than we were anticipating this morning. it's a little more widespread, going to take a little longer to clear all that out. but it will happen and we'll start to warm up as we roll into the weekend. check out the temperatures, clouds keeping us up around 20 at the airport right now, 18 in boulder and 17 in trinidad. had we cleared out, these degrees colder.

there, feeling like 3 below at limon and 9 in fort collins. some weather watchers checking in, 16 in littleton and with the overnight snow. there is a storm system that came through yesterday, bringing snow from st. louis to oklahoma city this morning. some of that snow will be moving into northern arkansas over the next few hours, people giddy over the chance for a few flakes. this is very light, probably not even creating a dusting on the ground out toward greeley and north of fort collins. we have a chance to see flurries before this clears out later today. expect some low clouds this morning, partly cloudy skies by this afternoon and watch the high country here, just a few snow showers. these are very light, no watches or warnings in effect, just light mountain snow

morning flurries on the plains and then we'll begin the slow clearing out and warming up process as we go into tomorrow. high pressure will be building in from the southwest and this ridge of high pressure will stay with us through the middle of next week, meaning a gradual warming trend is on the way. temperatures today, a cold one, mainly 20s across colorado. some higher elevations will hang in the teens and tonight it will be colder and clearer, more single digits across the state above and below zero, teens on the eastern plains and western slope. here is the beginning of the warmup tomorrow. denver will approach the freezing mark if not exceeding it by a degree or so. most of the state is in the 20s and 30s for sunday. the five-day forecast, we'll have a gradual warmup through the extended period. by wednesday we're at 44 for the high, right about where we

we have another chance of snow maybe approaching next weekend, so a good stretch of weather after the cold ending to the week. only on 4, a baby was so eager to join the world, he was delivered on the side of i-25. >> reporter: baby elan came into the world quicker than anybody expected. parents rushing for the hospital, but apparently not fast enough. >> i'm honking at people to tell them to get out of the way. >> reporter: rush hour hit on i- 25 and the baby was ready to come into the world. >> i didn't want to have a baby in the car. but you can only fight it so much. when you're ready, you're ready. >> she's yelling, the baby is coming. i got over from the left lane to the shoulder in about ten

`0 a florida turnpike was covered in shoes yesterday. it happened when a moving truck flipped on the highway. the driver says he was on his way from new orleans to southern florida to donate the shoes to a nonprofit. that's a lot of shoes. looks like seattle out there, chris. it is kind of foggy, low clouds starting today due to the snowfall that fell over the past 30 to 40 hours. and we'll keep this around just a little bit longer but it does clear out here with a little

if you're heading up to ski this morning, this is a live look at i-70 and evergreen parkway. look at the brake lights there, heavy traffic past evergreen parkway on that approach to floyd hill. maybe a little slow going, a lot of people wanting to play in the fresh powder that fell. we have low clouds and fog, colorado. this morning the fog is locally dense right now from boulder to the fort collins area, one and a half mile visibility in fort collins right now. boulder, zero visibility right now. some of that dense fog extends out, not too bad in the downtown area but foggier down in douglas county. tracking a few light snow showers in the high country and northern colorado, these are really just flurries. fort morgan, they may stick

temperatures in the teens across the denver metro, low clouds and fog kept us warmer than we were anticipating, most of us in the 15 to 20-degree range. those temperatures won't go far today but i have better news in the extended forecast, coming up in the next half hour. thank you. the national western stock show is underway and the old complex will soon be getting a major upgrade. last year voters approved tax extensings to fund the renovation and the city says it will take time to do it right. >> overall project, that anything. my hope is early as 2018, we'll start to see the initial improvements over what we're doing. >> the entire project could take up to a decade. we should see progress by next year's stock show. it is not too early to start thinking about the next school year. coming up, how parents can get

welcome back this saturday, january 9th. i'm mark taylor. deputies are looking for two men who robbed a gas station overnight. deputies say two men walked into the store and demanded money from the cashier. thankfully no one was hurt. a lot of people are buying last minute powerball tickets, the highest jackpot in history at $800 million. that number could go up with ticket sales today. if you want to buy one, get it by 7:59 tonight. the drawing is 8:29. odds of winning, 292 million to one. it's a cloudy morning after snow and bitter cold temperatures last night but changes could soon be on the way. chris has the forecast from the roof. >> good morning. we have a warmup on the way but

let's take a look at snow totals, some ski resorts getting plenty of snow here. i-70 westbound right now is very heavy after evergreen parkway, almost at a standstill if you're planning to go skiing. out in bennett, 5 and a half inches in central arapahoe county. one of the higher totals we saw out of this system. teens and 20s statewide, limon the lone wolf with 9 degrees in single digits this morning. around the state in terms of visibility, you can see the low clouds and fog in some areas, especially from boulder up toward the fort collins area. it's locally dense. as you get closer, you can see boulder right now zero visibility in that area, that

the rest of us socked in with low clouds waking up this saturday morning. but mark, there is light at the end of the tunnel. i have a warming trend, coming up in the five-day forecast. we'll talk about that in a bit. new overnight, violent clashes in brazil over and 8- cent price hike. this was the scene hours ago in sao paulo. protestors are demonstrating against the change in bus fares. a gunman who ambushed a police officer in philadelphia says he did it in the name of isis. the shooting was caught on video. officer jesse hartnett was hit three times and survived, even getting out of the car to chase the gunman. >> he will be okay and the

authorities do not believe he's connected to a bigger terror plot. right now authorities are trying to track down a gunman in adams county. 21-year-old quinton watts is wanted for a shooting that happened wednesday night at a home near 88th and washington. a second suspect in the case was arrested yesterday. developing now, a man is in custody connected to smash and grabs in englewood. now police are trying to figure out if he's responsible for several others around the area. stan bush reports on how they caught him. >> reporter: stacy could follow the footsteps of a burglar, and so could englewood police, who arrested the suspect at this apartment complex this morning. >> on a snowy night you wouldn't expect it. just to be able to follow his footsteps all the way here, and you saw the footsteps and knew they were not your own.

found what's become a calling card in a series of smash and grabs, a stone used to breakthrough a glass door and ransacked business damaged by a suspect looking for anything to steal. >> someone broke in and you're excited that your staff was trained well. >> reporter: more than two victimized since christmas, some of the crimes caught on camera, where a suspect uses a stone to break glass doors, getting inside and in some cases stealing cash and merchandise. metro area police couldn't confirm if the cases are related but there's relief knowing last night's suspect could not get away. >> i feel safe now. i really feel safe. >> police have not released the suspect's name. nearly 30 smash and grabs have happened in the metro area in the past two weeks. a stray dog is recovering

20s showing up. we have a little bit of a breeze in a few areas. we have 20 in colorado springs, 11 in golden and 24 in glenwood springs. what a day to be over there. our weather system from yesterday pulled off to the east. morning from outside st. louis down to oklahoma city. that is going to be moving east, northern arkansas getting snow later today. here in colorado, a few light snow showers in the high country and a little from fort morgan out toward the greeley area and north of fort collins. this won't last long, very light, probably not even making much of an accumulation.

today with snow in the higher elevations. low clouds this morning in eastern colorado give way to partly cloudy skies by this afternoon and this evening. that's how we'll wake up tomorrow morning, a few clouds and light snow showers in the high country. the real weather story is the high pressure moving in from the south and southwest. that will warm us up and give us a nice start to the week with warming temperatures on the way. temperatures today, still a cold one, teens and 20s just about statewide for the high temperatures. tonight we clear out a little bit. and we'll be colder than we are this morning, a lot more single digits showing up. we have some teens out here in the eastern plains and in the grand valley. the warmup begins on sunday, denver looking like we'll get above freezing. most of the state is in the 20s and 30s with a few teens up high. the forecast is looking good after that cold stretch, warming up a little each day.
