2800 block of federal where a house fire destroys one home an sends another person to the hospital. the latest is coming up on cbs 4 morning news. plus a loss overnight in the entertainment world, david bowie dead from cancer at 69. we'll reflect on his remarkable career. >> and a man is in the hospital after a late night shooting in denver. the latest on the investigation, coming up. let's get right to the breaking news, firefighters still working this big fire this morning. >> it's pretty massive, happening in the 2800 block of north federal boulevard. that's where jamie leary is live this morning. let's get right to her. >> reporter: good morning, britt and alan. you can see smoke pouring out of the unit but fire crews are rolling up those water lines, so it looks like they are packing up. this was called in around 2:30 a.m., crews arriving on the

defensive mode. they said it took them about 10 minutes to determine this fire was so bad they needed to go on the offense immediately. we spoke with officials and neighbors about what happened then arrived on the scene. >> crews made an initial attack on the exterior of the home then went inside. they found two victims. one was transported. one was a male and one was a female. >> woke up to the fire department next door and seeing the neighbor's house smoldering. all i seen was the roof smoldering, sort of scary because our house is really close to it. the fire department got here really fast. >> reporter: you heard from the neighbor who said he credits the fire department for their quick work. it didn't take them long to knock that down, saying the flames didn't extend to any

this could have been bad but the children and animals got out and they saw the neighbor in the ambulance being treated on the scene and looked like he was doing okay, possibly taken precaution. the home is a total lass after as well. the fire official did tell me this may have to be demolished but we'll continue to follow this. jamie leary, cbs 4 morning news. >> good thing this didn't jump with those houses so close together. thank you. people want more sunshine, so let's find out if we're going to get some of that. >> good morning. yesterday was a beautiful day. today we're going to warm up more, few more clouds this morning and sunshine out there today. you see those filtering in. there's been a little fog that's gotten better, could get worse this morning. we'll keep watching that. skies are fairly clear, no rain or snow today.

more breaking news out of denver this morning, a man shot near a motel on 26th and shawn chitnis is live outside the police headquarters with the latest. >> reporter: police are still trying to figure out what led up to the shooting between two men. we do know they had to respond to two different scenes in this case and one man is in custody. the victim in this case is expected to survive from his injuries. police caught up with the suspect in this case at 28th and clay, where we were there in time to see them going through a car and searching through it. we saw them go through that gray sedan and later towed that, as well as a red hummer from the scene. it's not clear which car was the suspect and why they needed to tow this second car. the shooting itself started and

the super 8 motel. the shooting itself happened late sunday night, and we do know one man is in custody and the victim in this case has nonlife-threatening injuries. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. this morning a woman charged with attempted murder for attacking another woman and removing her unborn baby from the womb faces a judge. 35-year-old dynel lane is facing attempted murder charges for luring michelle wilkins to a home in longmont under the assumption she was selling maternity clothes. the trial is expected to begin next month. you may notice a different kind of party bus on the streets in denver at the high there hopper, a free mobile marijuana lounge. the owners say the goal is to keep those using marijuana off the road.

exposed at work. researchers say pediatricians only ask about sleep when a child is struggling in school. they believe they behave better when the sleep apnea is fixed. according to ucla researchers, young adults often underestimate symptoms like numbness, weakness or sudden speech difficulty. doctors say the first three hours after a stroke are critical for treatment. more on the weather, in some parts of colorado you just don't want to be outside right now. >> it's dangerous in places, 18 below up in craig. this is just the actual temperature.

those cold spots i showed you, 19 in craig and 31 in grand junction, 40s on the eastern plains. planning your day today, we are looking at mostly sunny skies, 36 degrees by noon, 38 by 2:00 and 30 around 5:00 this evening. for the forecast, 40 tomorrow and staying in the 40s through thursday. the end official week looks to be chilly with a chance for snow. good morning, joel. take a look at i-25, possibility of lower visibility on various portions of the drive today. just take a look. be watching out for that. southbound speeds into the 70s and 60s, so you'll want to watch out for ice on the side streets this morning. 120th to i-70, just 10 minutes. a little slowing approaching pecos there. i-76 and 270 still nice and wide open.

with plenty of space between those cars. you have the express lanes project that's ongoing there, causing a little slowing. i zoom in to show you along federal where we have the closure in place. this is north high school there and the closure is right at 29th in the southbound direction. northbound direction it's at 27th. take iris to get around that this morning. there's a lot of options here in either direction to be rerouted through other neighborhoods. a woman arrested for a string of robberies will face a judge today. the fbi says this video shows 24-year-old abigail kemp mid- robbery last week. she locks the front of a jared jewelry store in north carolina after allegedly forcing two employees into a back room at gunpoint, then zip tying their hands.

an active scene here, smoke still billowing out of this unit. some very old houses on this block and what appears to have been one unit, luckily the flames didn't spread to any adjacent homes which is very close. however, the home to the right of the one in question had several units inside. those families were evacuated, young children and pets all making it out safely. we spoke with crews and neighbors. fire crews arrived at 2:30 a.m. and went immediately went into defensive mode because of the nature of the fire. we spoke with officials to hear about what they arrived to this morning. >> crews made the initial attack on the exterior of the home, then went inside. as they began their primary search, they found two victims. they were taken out. one was transported. one was a male.

>> i woke up to the fire department next door and seeing the neighbor's house smoldering, then going up in flames. all i seen was the roof smoldering. scary because our houses are so close together. but the fire department got here really fast. >> reporter: they are crediting this morning the quick work of the firefighters, who got two people in the unit out. a man was transported to the hospital as a precaution, and we are also told a firefighter was transported to the hospital for exhaustion, but that was due to an illness he had before he arrived on the scene. morning. we're told the fire began in the attic and minutes after they arrived on the scene, that roof collapsed. that house is a complete loss

this happened about midnight at 26th and zunai near the super 8 motel. the shooting likely happened late sunday night. police took over part of the parking lot at this super 8 and that was just one of the scenes this shooting. there was a second scene 28th and clay. we saw police going through a car there as well as blocking off part of that area. later they took that car, a gray sedan, as well as a red hummer, and towed them away from the scene. we know police caught up with the suspect at that location but it's unclear why they took two cars. one person is in custody, the victim expected to survive his injuries. shawn chitnis, cbs 4 morning news. another step in the court

also today, the mother of the so-called affluenza teen is facing a judge. tonya couch is back in tarrant county, texas, arraigned friday alone in court without an attorney present. she is expected to enter a not guilty plea now and her attorney will ask to reduce her bond, currently set at $1 million. her son ethan remains in the custody of mexican officials fighting extradition. there are efforts to bring mexican drug lord joaquin el chapo guzman to the u.s. to face justice. this week rolling stone mark published a lengthy interview with guzman conducted by sean penn. >> reporter: with two prison breaks under his belt, el chapo's story reads like a screen play. it appears that's what he wanted, a bio pic.
