story apartment complex in silver spring maryland was massive. shaking the surrounding area and scattering debris a couple hundred feet away. >> at first we heard a big boom. like a big loud noise and my aunt went outside and checked. and then she saw like a lot of fire outside. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters rushed to the chaotic scene just before midnight. >> firefighters responded and were met with heavy fire conditions and multiple rescues to be made. ey make multiple rescues and transported 31 people to the hospital. >> reporter: investigators have not determined what caused the explosion. three firefighters were hurt but have always been released from the hospital. several people remain missing as relatives wait for answers. melba casada's aunt and uncle live in the building and have not been located.

look at that smoke. no one was hurt. no near by homes were damaged. but those residents were evacuate as a precaution. investigators are still looking into what started it. we're learning more about the officer who shot and killed a 73-year-old woman during a police demonstration in florida. 28-year-old lee cole was accused of using excessive force with his police dog in the past. cole shot the woman with round during a shoot, don't shoot scenario. the gun was supposed to be loaded with blanks. >> we're learning more about the man who climbed trump tower yesterday using those big suction cups to cling to the building. he's been identified as 19-year- old steven regatta of new jersey. he climbed for two hours before officers yanked him off of the building. regatta is charged with

he posted a video saying he wanted to meet with donald trump. the candidate wasn't there. both candidates are focusing on the economy today. >> hillary clinton toured a plant. this comes after donald trump outlined his economic plan in a speech a few days ago. not surprisingly the candidates have different philosophies about tax rates. clinton wants tax earners to pay more while cuts for everyone. >> then there's trump's tax plan. he would give trillions in tax cuts to big corporations. millionaires and wall street money managers. that would explode our national debt. >> clinton plans to release her 2015 tax returns in the coming days. trump hasn't released his returns saying it would be inappropriate while they're being audited.

we have heavy rains from loveland. there's a little bit of lightning and south of grealy a little patch of rain moving in. a line from fort morgan. we have a few storms in northern colorado springs into the black forest going on as well. so some good rains here in the south lands this afternoon. 89 was the high at the airport and downtown. just one point above what's normal for this time of year. a nice cool down where it's raining in downtown it's 70 here. d.i.a. has not quiet seen the cool down. it's now at 82 degrees. herb crop is our weather

today thanks to good results from the emergency companies and retailers. dow gained 117 points, nasdaq grew by 23. the s & p gained 10. macy's revealedded its second quarter sales fell more than revealed. the retailer does plan to close 100 of its department stores. macy's has struggled to keep up with the popularity of online shopping. the retailer will shut down 50% of its struggling stores. macy's did not say what stores or how many employees will be it did say it will happen early next year. shoppers should watch out for great closing sales at the end of the year. new information on the name of the face behind the huffington post. there she is. the she plans to launch a new wellness company called thrive global. the u.s. fertility rate now at its lowest point ever. the government started tracking
