churning up the east coast. the island nation of haiti is a mess. these new aerial pictures captured by a drone show just how vast all that damage is. food, water medicine are in short supply. check this out, want show you what it looks like to fly through this dangerous storm. it's called a hurricane hunter plane. the pilot tries to keep it steady. as the plane flies into the eye of the storm, look at that almost surreal, because the winds there the storm seems to be inching its way up the coast. >> very slowly up the coast. it is close to land but still tons of rain and wind. we have somebody who is right there, don champion in daytona beach. i know the eye of the storm is well to the north of you now. what are conditions like where you are? >> reporter: good evening, ed. we certainly haven't seen frequent bands of heavy rain

process of assessing the damage. take a look behind me. still plenty of flooding along the coast. there are a lot of damaged buildings here as well. countless trees and power lines down. now the focus shifts up north where matthew could unleash even more destruction. hurricane matthew pounded the florida coast with blinding rain and winds that gusted over 100 miles an hour. the governor says matthew remains a moves north. >> it could be the worst part of this is still to come. >> reporter: hurricane force winds destroyed the side of the boat house at a marina in smyrna. all over the state debris littered streets. >> i've seen trees uprooted. i've seen downed power lines. i've seen carports falling on cars. >> reporter: in jacksonville huge waves crashed sure. officials are worried matthews

along the st. johns river. >> on top of the winds storm surge is going to be seen of kent. 10 feet plus waves. >> reporter: the governor is expected to tour the damage today but as you can see from some of the destruction behind me matthew is still very powerful. >> it get scary a couple times with the trees in the neighborhood. trees down everywhere. >> reporter: in south carolina the governor pleaded with holdouts to leave. >> there is nothing safe about what's getting ready to happen. >> reporter: more than half a million peop and when it comes to the power, people have been told that they should be prepared to be without service for several days. the good news for them is that as conditions have improved across this region, we have seen power crews going to those areas trying to restore service. also jim and karen, we are already seeing folks coming back from inland, to the coast. trying to assess the damage on

frustrated. there is a roadblock here, here in daytona beach. this ridge leads to the main beachfront area. there are homes over there that folks are still not being allowed to go over there. >> okay. don champion, thank you very much. as we take a look there is daytona beach and you can see how it is lifting to the north. still some gusty winds but the bulk of the storm has gone to the north and you can see tons of moisture. the only saving grace eastern side of the eye, that is the strongest as far as the winds go. western side of the eye, not as strong. however a lot of this moisture pushes up and right onto land. that's why they've got so much rain and that's why they are going to have nothing but flooding problems. moving north at 12 miles an hour, the winds all the way up to washington, dc along with the clouds and you can see it sitting right there right now and as far as where it's going to head, here are the paths. a lot of them are going to the

take a look at this. it could cross over the path it has already taken which means it could hit the bahamas again and parts of cuba in the west. already hit eastern cuba. so this storm is not done. it will go from there. karen? >> thank you. a man is in custody for tricking people into investing on businesses he did not own. richard moremi is now charged with fraud, forgery and theft. the suspect sold equity interest in a restaurant and a wine shop in stapleton, he th used the investment funds for his own personal use. investigation revealed investors lost a total of $480,000. the da says the restaurant and wine shop owners are also the victims in this case. new development on the man who was shot and killed by boulder police after bringing a machete to the cu campus. this was the scene outside of the champion center near folsom field on wednesday. the suspect has been identified

a discharged marine and a father of two. cbs4's andrea flores joins us live tonight. andrea, he has ties to the denver area. >> reporter: karen, that's right. we know this much, friends tell is as you mentioned that he was a marine but was discharged and moved to colorado about five months ago. loved ones tell us that he was battling some demons and moved to the denver area to try and get some help. we're learning more about the man shot and killed by po they say he refused to drop a machete wednesday morning. friends say this man 28-year-old brandon simmons was an active marine for 10 years but was recently discharged. they say he was last stationed in san diego and spent time serving in iraq. his last facebook post early wednesday morning reads, i command you to stop eating creatures from the water.

holding a machete and a cleaver. those closest to him say he may have been suffering from ptsd or depression. they tell cbs4 he grew up in and out of foster homes and shelters in texas. loved one's say he leaves behind two young kids. friends say he moved to colorado less than a year ago, but investigators are still trying to figure out what ties he may have had to the campus. ago poli have named the officers involved in the shooting. cmpd officer clay austin and boulder pd officer jason connor are on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues. reporting live in denver, andrea flores, cbs4 news. new information for you on the search for a driver who flipped and suv after leading officers on a wild chase. the crash happened at 50th and washington early this morning. debris strewn across the

who went to the hospital with serious injuries. no word yet on exactly what started the chase. a call for action, after reports of abuse at a center for people with disabilities. a federal investigation found patients at the pueblo regional center were burned with blow dryers, some even had words scratched into their skin. today, two members of groups or members of two groups i should say that advocate for the disabled gathered at the capital to experiences of being abused at regional centers statewide. they want lawmakers to repeal immunity laws for agencies serving people with disabilities. advocates say the of you won't stop until staff members become civilly and criminally liable. >> we are not here to vilify the industry. the people. there are some amazing people out there but we do need more

and developing story now burke ramsey is suing the forensic pathologist who said on tv that burke killed his sister jonbenet. dr. warner spitz appeared last month on a series that re- examined the death of jonbenet ramsey 20 years after her brutal murder. melissa garcia, burke ramsey is suing? >> reporter: the defamation lawsuit asks for $50 million in compenry for an accusation that burke ramsey's attorney says has him living under a false cloud of suspicion. >> brought to the table a lot of questions which were unanswered. >> reporter: world renowned pathologist warner spitz is at the center of a $150 million lawsuit filed by the now 29- year-old brother of jonbenet ramsey. in the case of jonbenet ramsey that aired last month on cbs,

1996 murder of a six-year-old beauty queen. in an interview with cbs detroit, spitz named burke ramsey as jonbenet's killer. an accusation his attorney says was based on distorted and exaggerated conclusions. >> there's no place in an orderly and just society for an individual to go out and use his so-called credentials and his so-called position as an expert to brand this young man >> reporter: police and later the d.a.'s office publicly cleared burke ramsey's name. >> yes there's free speech. but there are limits. >> reporter: law professor karen steinhauser says the law protects people from statements that cause hurt. despite a public appearance on dr. phil, wood is arguing that burke is a private figure a status that would carry a lower standard for defamation.

really dominating the west. we have rain up to our north that will skip us and then still tracking hurricane matthew down to the southeast and we'll go back to bed for more on that. >> thanks. you can see category to win this 110 miles per hour moving north at 12. and tons of moisture coming to the south carolina and georgia areas. take a look, here's where it sits. a lot of the models earlier had it go up to the north. now the bulk of the models are having it come down and actually make a turn and crossover its this is where it came up, eastern cuba and this is where it may have come to the south once again. maybe close to florida. maybe western sections of cuba and the bahamas. so some areas that got hit once may get hit again by this storm depends on how strong the storm remains and how badly those countries will be had. here's all the cool weather, right down into our area. 67 today. look at the southwest at 96. southeast behind the storm, pretty one from the 70s to the low 90s. as we look at what we do today,

the broncos will work him out tomorrow. make a decision sometime before kickoff. siemian was limited at practice for a second straight day but gary kubiak says he is making progress. kubiak says his decision won't be affected by the fact the broncos have another game next thursday. although playing it safe on sunday certainly makes sense. when kubiak got to the podium, he knew what all the questions would be about. >> go ahead. want to know how driver was today? [ laughter ] >> >> he did a little bit more. took more reps in practice and like i said we'll continue to see how he comes out of it. we've got 48 hours here so we'll see how he comes out tomorrow. took a lot more today so we'll see where he's at. >> you've got to know everybody's going to get hit. that's part of the game. we feel good about that. he's shown the ability to move and do the things he needs to do. so it's really just like i said, just us watching tomorrow
