basin. but here in the denver metro area we are expecting highs in the 70s. ashton altieri has the weekend forecast and of course the friday forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you, britt. yesterday when we were far below freezing in most neighborhoods in the morning we were promising a warmup for the weekend and it starts today. not nearly as cold as yesterday at this time. tech center we have 40 degrees. few clouds. golden at 43 and aurora at it is going to be another relatively warm weekend for this time of year, anyway. we'll share with you the forecast coming up. now let's get a check on traffic. joe is here for joel. >> reporter: here's a look at the driver from the south side of town heading northbound into town. castle rock all the way downtown looking nice and wide open for now. but britt, we have a huge power outage in aurora. i'll give you the details, plus the full denver traffic picture coming up. joe, thank you so much. new this morning, denver police

single car crash. this happened at ex position and navajo. one person in the hospital with serious injuries and another in police custody after a crash spanned a couple of blocks ended at 38th and brighton. we are awaiting word from denver police on whom they say was possibly drunk driving. the roads are now back open this morning. we are learning more about a shooting that left one teenager dead in denver. the teens apparently climbed over a man's fence to get to his illegal marijuana plants. the homeowner apparently shot them. now another teen is stepping forward and saying he, too was shot. the shooting took place last month out a home on high street in denver. the homeowner, keith hammock, has been formally charged with

and attempted murder. those charges now include a third victim. this instance happened about a year ago. >> it doesn't appear the victim at that time filed a formal report or complaint with the police. he was treated at the hospital but gave a different story how he was shot. >> the make my day la apply in this case. we have transportation trouble i'm sorry to tell you. a shuttle that takes thousands of people to dia is going out of business and now those passengers don't have another option because of the problems with the a line to the airport. cbs4's shawn chitness is live at union station with more on this. good morning, shawn. >> reporter: good morning. there is an idea of what will be coming for passengers once those problems with the a line

as this shuttle service passengers from arvada have been enjoying for some time. they are certainly disappointed to hear that. take a look at this shuttle they've been using for a few years now, it's provided by ride provide and goes from old town arvada directly to the airport. it's a nonprofit service that relies on funding from rtd. now that the a line takes passengers from here at union station to dia, anyone traveling from arvada will need to take a new rail service to the g line, it's not ready because of trouble on the a line. starting next month the ride provide shuttle will stop and the g line won't be ready. the a line, the service that takes you to the airport, needs new software to help with the timing issue at certain crossings. rtd said the g line was supposed to start this fall, but not given an exact date.

>> we have put in a call so we are working to get more information on that. thank you for that report. we have the first u.s. casualty in the battle for mosul. the u.s. military said a u.s. service member died yesterday from wounds from an improvised explosive device in iraq. >> reporter: we're with the counterterrorism divisions special forces. the men are tired. they have been fighting more than two years ago. but morale is high. they'reclose to mosul. the forces have been pounding this area. this is the front line. and being this close to the fighting, one can't help but to think, but to wonder about the fate of the civilians who potentially might be trapped

back to back games. the cubs beat the dodgers 8-4. game six in chicago is saturday night at 6:00. the cubs are now a win away from playing in the world series against cleveland. and charlie sheen is expressing his interest to throw out a pitch. he tweeted, if called upon i would be he played in the movie "major league" you may remember.

been really dry in parts of colorado. in fact, since june both denver and fort collins have had less than half of their normal precipitation. the extremely dry weather is causing drought. here's meteorologist chris spears. >> reporter: unfortunately we are talking drought again in colorado. it's a frequent visitor to our state. take a look at this map. this just came out yesterday. drought has expanded on the way south into denver, and parts of douglas county. there's a little pocket on the far eastern plains. we're abnormally dry or predrought in the front range mountains and foothills and across southern colorado. we are here to give you a view of the water. when we talk about the drought that's currently in place, this is a meteorological drought or short-term deficit in precipitation and that has more of an impact on growing, not

full, not quite, but pretty high for this time of the year. denver water telling me they're at 89% storage capacity. we are in good shape. but it's the mountains behind me that will tell the tale as we go into the weeks ahead. we definitely need a good year of mountain snowfall to ensure good water supplies for the year ahead. for now, conserve where you can and hope the snow comes winter. on lake dillon, meteorologist chris spears. chris said it, we really need the rain. small opportunity the middle of next week. between now and then rain chances are basically zero. snow chances in the mountains also close to zero through at least early, early next week. we'll get into that in just a moment. rooftop camera, we're looking at our waning moon.

37 degrees outside cbs4. 43 in lakewood. compare our temperatures to where we were yesterday at this time, not bad. ten to almost 20 degrees warmer. in fact, aurora is 18 degrees warmer now than we were yesterday at this time. yes, it's still chilly, but it's not that bitter early cold weather yesterday. 25 was our morning low yesterday. 74 where we will be later today in denver. 77 in burlington. most mountain towns will top out in the 60s, when you're going e colder there, 40s and 50s. few clouds on the front range this morning. notice this big arc over the west? that's the top of a big ridge of high pressure that is firmly in control of our weather. that's where the jet stream is located. the jet steers storm system. now they'll be steered away from colorado. everybody under the control of this high pressure ridge will have warmer than normal temperatures, including all of us here in colorado. there is a front to the north

the next several days. can't move south because of this ridge. once the ridge breaks down next week, the front can come south and that will be our one chance of seeing rain and that won't be until tuesday. until then, sunny and warmer than normal. in fact tomorrow we'll be within 5 degrees of the record. the record is 84. we're expecting 80. 75 sunday. 73 monday. and it looks clear with temperatures in the 60s more monday night football in denver. let's get a check on the traffic with joe. >> reporter: here's a 25 and 84th. the drive there has been significantly helped by the extra lane and so far, though, no major accidents or stalls on the north side of town. 6th avenue slowing down the more east you go. speeds into about the 50s. will take you about six minutes to head eastbound from simms to i-25. still working that major power outage in aurora. i'll give you the details on that in a few minutes.

>> thank you, joe. the turn of the season is marked by snow guns and runs here in colorado. this morning is the day many skiers and boarders look forward to. it is opening day at arapahoe basin. our mountain newsroom reporter matt kroschel is live at a- basin right now. matt, i feel sorry for you. you have the tough assignment today. >> reporter: the tough assignments, always the tough ones. i can barely hear snow guns. right now, 18 inches of man- made and natural snow. that's allowed arapahoe basin to be the first ski area in the state to open. race to the open. last year it was loveland and a- basin on the same morning. try covering both at the same time. it was crazy. this year they gave us a little present, we're here in beautiful arapahoe basin. there's already folks lined up getting ready to be one of the

the state. britt, i brought my skis and i'm very excited. >> so exciting. i was going to ask you if you were a boarder or skier. how many people are lined up already? >> reporter: about 15 of them. through the darkness over a hill to grandmother's house they go. they're lined up on the other side there. we're over here closer to base camp at the bottom of the hill. there's not any snow right here, because it hasn't really snowed in the last couple of days. but i promise you there's 18 inches of snow down that one lift down here, down the middle of the mountain. some have called it the ribbon of death. that's not what we're going for this year. this year it's going to be a nice opening day here. >> you touch upon a great point. it may be just one run, but it's enough to get the coloradians up early this morning. a lot of people playing hooky. matt, thank you for that report. we'll check in with you in a little bit.

f0 right now con artists are targeting college students with a new twist on an old scam. the thieves say they are with the irs and they demand payment of taxes that don't even exist. cbs4's andrea flores has the story. >> i delete the voice mail. >> reporter: jessica meredith, a senior at metro state university is no stranger to fake phone calls. >> they're calling saying i owe money to the irs.

>> reporter: over the years, meredith has learned to ignore calls from strangers. >> i don't pick up if it's a number i don't recognize. >> reporter: across the country a growing number of college students and their parents are finding themselves at the center of a phone scam. thieves posing as irs agents are fooling students into paying thousands of dollars for a federal student tax that doesn't exist. >> anyone who has ever asked for social security number, a personal identification, the type of things should not be given out. >> reporter: authorities say they're even threatening to arrest students who don't shell out. meredith says they're easy targets. >> i think that people who are out on their own for the first time, they're 18 and they just don't know any better. i think that welcome back a really important -- would be a really important aspect to cover in freshman classes. >> reporter: it's important for students and parents to know the irs will never ask for
