another campaign staffer was driving the van and lost control when they hit a patch of ice. the van went across the median and a truck hit it. three other people were hurt a a treated at the atlantic hospital. carson has temporarily suspended his campaign. he and other candidates are offering their condolences. branstad said ted cruz needs to be defeated during the renewable fuels summit yesterday. he's basing that claim on cruz's opposition to the renewawae fuel standard. other candidatat at the summit said if voters elect cruz, the ethanol mandate will not survive. republican presidential candidate rand paul also opposes the renewable fuel stananrd. the former governor of alaska, sarah palin, has endorsed donald trump. at a rally in ames yesterday, she says there need to be a change in the government. turn the country around. an eastern iowa group is hosting a mock caucus and caucus training today. the league of united latin american citizens council is helping with the event in iowa city. you can go to the center for worker justice at 6 o'clock to learn abt how the caucuses work and how to be involved. the johnson county board of supervisors has a new member this morning. in a special election, democrat lisa green- uglass received more than 2-thousand votes yesterday. she is a spspnish- language trainer and lives in north liberty. her opponent, north liberty city council member chris hoffman, got more than 12- hundred votes. the county auditor says voter turnout was lower than normal - at nearly 4 percent. two sisters are dead this morning - they were trapped in a house fire. 12-year old lena bartels and 15-yeaeaold trinity bartels of wauzeka, wisconsin were the only ones home at the time. a man driving by the house called 9-1-1 just before midnight monday night. he stopp and tried to

taken over the house. fire crews found the girls inside once the flames were out. the crawford county sheriff's office says this is a devastating loss for the commun]ty. "this is a very small, close nit mmunity, things likehis affefe us greatly, but the nice thing about this community is we pull together well as a community, and i think together we'll get through this." the state fire marshalllls now investigating the cause of the fire. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. students and staff at the e university of iowa hope the number of mumps cases declines this semester. all undergraduat e students are now back in class. there e usually one or two cases of mumps in a typically school year. but the latest report from county health officials shows 253 cases have been lab confirmed in johnson county, since july. the majority, are at the u-i. . this year, numbers rival 2006, when hundreds of cases broke out across the

kcrg-tv9'forrest saunders is ve at the iowa memororl union to talk with medical staff. forrest, officials hope the winter break will help cut the numbers? -what do yiur most recent numbers look like? since the ui went on winter break, the numbers tested in the community dropped substantially, but there were still 2-3 cases most days, usually non-students, but many college aged individuals who live and work in the area. -do you think the break helped or hurt the spread of the disease? it should help......the typical time between being exposed and coming down with the disesee is 16-18 days, so this break shouldld help stop the cycle of spreading this from one person to another. but will not know until the students get back to their normal campus activities and about a month has passed. -any plans to help combat mumps as students return? continue offering the third dose of mmr. education to get diagnosed and to stay isolated in their

spend decades in prison for sexually abusing a gl under the age of 12. police say 40-year-old robert gathright inappropriately touched the girl. the victim told police the abuse happened at least several times, including last november. gathright faces up to 25 years in prison if sexual abuse. a man found with a plastic gun faces felony charges for robbing a bank in iowa city. someone called 9-1-1 yesterday momoing to report a man with a gun robbing the u-s bank branch at 1117 william street. police say they found 30-year-old clifton brinkmeyer with a plastic gun. investigators say surveillance footage and witness statements helped identify him. police arrested brinkmeyer for second- degree robbery. iowa city west high school students are going back to a normal day of class today. a bomb threat forced students to evacuate yesterday morning. police say they received a 9-1-1 call warning there

not many people are signing up for dubuque's citizen's p pice academy this year. in the academy, participants learn about a number of police procedures like arrests, search and seizures and use of force. people in the class have the option of having police pepper spray them and they also ride along with officers on duty. police suspect the drop in interest in the program has to do with recent cases of mistrust for police. "this is a way for us to really give people a first hand look at what we do and we try to make it as hands on as possible." the ten week course starts february 4th and runs through april 7th. sessions are at the police station on thursday evenings from 6 to 9. if you've ever dipped your
