ononold marion road.court documents show cusic is the one who called 9-1-1 - telling the operator he killed his mother because *she threatened *him with a knife.an autopsy shows she died of blunt force trauma.if convicted of first degree murder, cusic will spend the rest of his life in prison. cbs 2 news is learning new details about the man who went on a shooting rampage at a colorado ssings planned pararthood clinic. robert dear made his first court appearance today.he's accussed of killing a university of colorado police officer, an iraq war veteran and a mother of two.police say dear also planned to ignite two propane tanks left outside his car.he surrendered to police after a five-hour standoff.a motive for the killingswas not discussese today.dear will be back in court next week. baltimore's police chief says "the future of the city is at stake" as the *first trial in the death of fredd gray gets underway.*six police officers have been indicted in

april 19.the 25-year-old died while in police custody. jury selection for officer william porter's trial began today, while demostrators gathered outside.porter faces charges of assault, manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. the chicago o police officer accused of shooting a teenager 16 times is free tonight.bail for jason van dyke was set at one-point-five-million dollars, hours latat he posted ten percent of that to get out of jail.van dyke is charged with murder in the october 20-14 shooting of 17-year-old laquan mc-donald.dash cam video of the hooting was released last week and sparked days of protests in the city. police say mcdonald was carrying an unopened pocketknife. they say he slhed the tires of a police cruiuir before the shooting.if convicted, van dyke faces 20 years to life in prison. now ten at ten continues with

stories across the corridor. a johnson county sheriff's deputy is now being blamed for causing a crash.according to the iowa city-press citizen, itappened over the weekend at the intersection of highway six and highway 109 near oxford.the sheriff's office say the deputy pulled out in front of another vehicle and that's what caused the crash. one person was taken to the hospital, and is expected to be o.k. muslim students at iowa's three public universities are seeking a permanent place to hold prayers.the university of iowa already accommodates space requests from faith- based student groups.students at iowa state say they have access to the school's chapel but it's too far from classes. at northern iowa, more than 300-muslim students are looking for a place to pray. in cedar rapids, rapids,the city christmas tree is now in place on may's island but u'll have to wait to see the twinkling lights. city crews cut the 35-foot colorado spruce from the yard of the anderson family on the southwest side.the city will

today.cruz criticized democrats democratsover their plans to bring syrian refugees to the u.s.the senator says the proposal would make the country more dangerous.he says s the united states should be helping the refugees find a safe place in the middle east. former news anchor ashley hinson announced today she is seeking the seat being left open by former speaker of the house kraig paulsen.hinson, a republican. republican.is the second candidate to make a bid for the seat.attorney mark seidl is running as a democrat. waterloo voters will go to the polls tomorrrr to elect a new mayor. mayor.councilman quentin hart and former mayor tim hurley will go head to head.neither secured a majority of votes on november 5th, forcing the automatic runoff. another runoff will take place in cedar falls.voters will see jim brown and incumbent mayor jon crews' names on the ballot. brown gained the most votes during the november 5th election, but dn't pick up enough to win outright.crews dropped out of the runoff and endorsed brown for mayor.dave

is running a write-in campaign. congressman rod blum is once again is spending the most money to send mass mailings to constituents.blum spent nearly 130-thousand dollars on mailings from july to september.that's up nearly 80- thsand spent last quarter. cbs 2 news reached out to blum's office for comment.they defended the spending, saying the mailings are the best way to get feedback from people in the district. governor branstad is)once again speaking out against calls to delay plans to privatize iowa's medicaid program. program.the governor says there's no reason to push the transition beyond january first.this comes after a judge threw out a contract the state signed with one of the four out-of-state providers.the governor says the plans can move forward with just three, citing similar programs in other states.as of right now, the changes will go into effect the f fst of the year. for more political headlines, be sure to watch 'iowa in focus', this sunday morning at 10:30, right here cbs 2.
