cbs 2 news ten at ten continues now with more of the corridor's top stories. stories.classes will resume at normal time tomorrow at west high school in iowa city. city.a bomb threat this morning shutdown the campus for most of the day and everyone was evacuated.it's a story we first broke on cbs-2-iowa-dot-com.the threat was reported at about eight-45 this morning.officers responded immediately with k-9

but found nothing.parents picked up their students at a nearby rec center while other students were bussed me. investigators tell cbs 2 news they are still following leads tonight. not only were students and faculty evacuated, but a johnson county polling site had to be moved. moved.the school had served as a voting location for today's special election.the johnson county auditor re-directed people to vote at the nearby athletic hall of fame. and this just in - results of that special election to fill a vacant seat on the johnson county board of supervisors. here is a look at the final results into the cbs 2 newsroom.they show lisa green douglass defeating chris hoffman.so lisa green douglass will fill the remaining term of terrance neuzil. turnout for this race, just over three percent. developing right now - g-o-p presidential hopeful ben carson's carson'scampaign is temporarily on hold tonight. this after a volunteer for

van crash in western iowa. iowa.the state patrol tells cbs 2 news, a van carrying three iowa staffers hit a patch of ice on i-80 near atlantic at about nine-30 this morning. morning.the van flipped onto its side before it was hit by another vehicle.25-year-old braden joplin was killed in the crash and two other volunteers suffered injuries. doctor carson is in omaha tonight with joplin's family. all campaign activitis have been suspended until at least thursday. now to the two front runners in the g-o-p race in iowa. iowa.just 13 days before the caucuses, governor terry branstad is warning voters not to choose ted cruz.the governor claims the senator from texas is no friend of agriculture or renewable fuels and actually poses a threat to the state. state.cbs 2 news reporter matt hammill joins us live from cedar rapids with reaction to this developing story.matt. ______________ for those who have watched governor branstad - - during his

this is really out of character. it's true that millions of dollars come from renewable fuels - and jobs - - at places like a- d-m - - but the governor - has started a fist fight - in the republican party. " i think it would be very damaging to our state. " while governor branstad has declined to endorse any candidate for president - today he went out of his way to take a swipe atted cruz - - saying he's proven as president he'd be against corn based fuels and required ethanol use. " i believe that would be a big mistake for iowa to support him and i know he's ahead in the polls but the only poll that counts is the one they take on caucus night and i think it could change between now and then. " the comments are a direct assault on the candidate supported by iowa's powerful coalition of evangelical christians.they like cruz' - - conservative stand on

immigration. family leader president bob vander plaats (plotz) - who endorsed cruz - told me - iowa farmers know the score - and no one should be surprised - after the governors own son protested at cruz rallies." conservatives like ted cruz scare him ... everybody knows that terry branstad's son .. eric branstad is a hired gun to try to take down ted cruz and use the ethanol industry as the reason why you take down ted cruz. " meantime - cruz's closest challenger - wasted no time - making hay. could actually grow* by sixty** percent.covering the corridor in cedar rapids - matt hammill fox 28 news. matt thanks.cruz's closet competitor in iowa, picked up his biggest endorsement yet. sarah palin endorsed donald trump at a rally in ames tonight. the 2008 vice presidential nominee has supported the billionaire in the past.in response, senator cruz thanked palin for helping him win his senate seat and said he was a huge fan of the former alaska governor. thursday night at six -- cbs 2 and fox 28 are hosting the "your voice, your future - the iowa impact" town hall in iowa city.we'll be discussing the role iowa and it's caucuses play in the process to nominate presidential candiadtes for both parties -- and what role it will play in the future. future.our panel will include both the iowa republican and democratic party *chairs, along with other political experts.

reporter kevin barry explains how presidential politics in iowa might change if the hawkeye state lost lostit's first in the nation status. status. this is hardly the first year that iowans have defended their first in the nation caucuses against other states who want the first crack at picking the next president. it's the nightmare senario for both parties in iowa -- but the actual impact varies depending on if and how it ever does happen. happen. depends on where we would go. south carolina is third and they attracted a lot of candidates in a debate last week. if we were 30th, we probably wouldn't attract anybody.that means chaotic scenes like the ones at the state fair this summer would be a thing of the past.iowa g-o-p chair jeff kaufmann already had to cancel the iowa straw poll over the summer because candidates didn't think it was important to be successful in iowa.he says even fewer reasons for iowa would be a problem.

10...state lawmakers are considering a bill that would limit when potential employers can ask about a job applicant's past. past.the legislation would allow the employer to ask questions about crinimal history, but only after an interview is offered. offered.supporters of the "ban the box" bill say the move gives applicants a second chance. chance.waterloo's city council discussed a similar measure in october.but, the council decided to put a vote for a potential ban on hold. now ten at ten continues with a look at tonight's other stories across the corridor. right now in iowa city, one man is behind bars following a bank robbery.iowa city police tell cbs 2 news, officers were called to the u-s bank on william street at about nine this morning.witnesses say a man showed a gun and demanded money moneyinvestigators took 30-year-old clifton brinkmeyer into custody a few hours later. he's now charged with second degree robbery.police believe

developing tonight - the red cross is now helping 14 people after two house fires in cedar rapids.authorities tell cbs 2 news, a dryer caught fire at a home on a avenue northeast last night. night.crews also responded to a fire on johnson avenue northwest.authorities say the owner of that home was trying to thaw frozen pipes. pipes.no one was hurt in either case.the red cross has now helped 126 iowans affected by fires since january first. that is cbs 2 news ten at ten -- the corridor's top stories and tomorrow's weather first forecast in the first ten minutes. minutes.still to come... come...the one thing that should be a red flag if you get a call from someone claiming to be with the i-r-s.

cbs 2 news continues to follow the latest developments in the flint, michigan water crisis. tonight, in his state of the state speech, governor rick snyder took the blame. many in the state say snyder's slow response to the city's contaminated water is criminal. back in 20-14, flint's water became tainted with lead after an an emergency manager--in an efforst to save money-- switched the city's water source from detroit to the flint river.some are calling for synder to resign, but in an exclusive interview with our sister station in flint, he said he's staying put. think about it when most people face a problem or have a crisis, do you walk away from it or do you try to solve it? the spirit of michiganders is if you have something that didn't go right, you don't walk away you say how do you solve it? so that's what this is about, trying to do

done.president obama has signed an *emergency declaration for the city but refused the governor's request for a *disaster declaration. that's because the water contamination was man-made and not a natural event. today marks the first day of the tax filing season, and scammers are trying to take advantage of taxpayers. taxpayers.the treasury department issued a public service announcement warning taxpayers to be on the look out for con artists claiming to be with the i-r-s.according to the department, more than 900-thousand have been scammed just this year.the i-r-s says if you do owe money, the mail. and coming up in sports... a conference battle in marion -- could the number seven indians hold off independence?
