breaking news this morning, deadly rampage. more bloodshed at ft. hood after a gunman opened fire on service members. >> we're heartbroken that something like this might have happened again. >> an eerily familiar scene at the nation's largest army base. the latest on the victims and the shooter in a live report from ft. hood. rocked again. another tsunami warning overnight following a second powerful earthquake. chile forced to evacuate the entire coastline for a second night. dramatic new video just in from the latest tremor. and caught on camera. a driver tries to beat an oncoming train with her kids inside the van.

and good thursday morning. we begin with the nation stunned again over another mass shooting at the nation's biggest army base. >> an iraq war veteran opening fire on fellow troops killing three before turning the gun on himself leaving 16 others wounded. this morning we're learning new details about that soldier, his victims and what led up to the tragic shooting. >> abc's marci gonzalez traveled all night, and now she's at ft. hood. marci, what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. well, the lockdown here has now been lifted, and we now know who investigators believe was responsible for this deadly shooting, and they say he acted alone. [ sirens ] hearing a pistol, investigators say army specialist ivan lopez set out yesterday to kill soldiers going into two buildings at ft. hood opening fire. the soldiers here at the nation's largest army base unarmed and caught off guard. three were killed. 16 others hurt before

investigators say lopez turned the gun on himself. >> within 15 minutes, first responders from the military police and the emergency services responded to the scene, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: lopez, who was active military, a truck driver on the base, reportedly served four months in iraq in 2011. the army confirming while he was not wounded in battle, he was being treated for a self-reported traumatic brain injury, as well as anxiety and depression while being evaluated for possible posttraumatic stress disorder. >> he seemed like a pretty good guy. i mean, he was always smiling and waving whenever i saw him, so i didn't think anything strange or unusual. >> reporter: this rampage coming nearly five years after another lone gunman claimed 13 lives here at ft. hood, the deadliest shooting ever on a u.s. military installation. >> the folks there have sacrificed so much on behalf of our freedom.

many of the people there have been through multiple tours in iraq and afghanistan. they've served with valor, and they've served with distinction, and when they're at their home base, they need to feel safe. >> reporter: and investigators say they do not believe this was an act of terrorism, but as they continue working to try to determine the motive, they say they aren't ruling anything out. john and diana, back to you. >> marci, what do we know about the wounded victims? >> reporter: well, as we said, we know 16 people were injured. all of them members of the military, and we know at least three people are listed in critical condition. we're not hearing any other details beyond that at this point, though. >> all right, marci gonzalez live at ft. hood, thank you for that report. >> and we're just now learning the identities of some of lopez's victims. >> among them a man from western new york, patrick miller of allegheny is among the wounded.

his family tells us they're not sure yet of the extent of his injuries. >> according to his facebook page, miller is a major at the army, and he's stationed at ft. hood and a two-time combat veteran. and just before last night's phillies/rangers game in texas, a moment of silence for the victims of the shooting at ft. hood. >> stay with abc news for the very latest on this story. live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." and also breaking overnight, more rattled nerves in chile this morning. >> another powerful jolt rocking that country after a massive 8.2 earthquake. >> that was a 7.8 magnitude aftershock hitting last night in the same area as the day before. officials ordered the evacuation of chile's entire coastline driving residents from their homes for a second straight night. a tsunami warning was issued but later canceled. there are no reports of any major damage or injuries. at least six people were killed

in the initial earthquake. well, an alert for millions today. severe weather on the move in the plains. in missouri, a hailstorm so intense, one man said it felt like someone was throwing rocks at him. it almost looked like snow and, indeed, the road crews were out. missouri could be in for more severe weather today. accuweather's jim dickey is here with details. >> good morning, john and diana. an area of low pressure will strengthen across the plains today having a wide range of impacts. first of all, dangerous thunderstorms expected. this is the second round in these areas. the highest threat for severe weather, st. louis, south and west of little rock, damaging winds, large hail and even tornadoes, a higher chance of tornadoes than what we saw yesterday and then to the north where there's cold air in place, arctic air in place, and that coal air continues to be drawn in. we'll see some snowfall from the great lakes south and west to the front range of the rockies. this will last into friday. by the time all is said and done, some spots, especially the twin cities north and eastward, 6 to 12 inches of a heavy, wet snow. along the system's warm front and soaking rain for most of the ohio valley with flooding as a

concern. john and diana, back to you. >> all right, jim. thank you. there was a frightening last night moment for passengers aboard a delta flight. the plane made an emergency landing at new york's jfk airport because of a possible hydraulic problem. the mcdonnell douglas jet landed safely. it rolled off the tarmac onto the grass. there were no injuries. that flight originated in atlanta. new developments in the malaysia airlines flight 370 investigation. all passengers and crew have been cleared of suspicion. there's still no sign of the missing boeing 777. no word on what happened to it. time, of course, running out for the batteries that power the black boxes. the head of the multinational effort says it is one. the most complicated searches in history. and there is a new mystery at the site of the washington state mudslide. 1 of the 29 sets of remains of victims does not match anyone listed as missing. 18 other people still haven't been found, and the search for them continues, although it is slow. president obama last night declared the landslide a major disaster making federal aid available to survivors. and two of those survivors were

rescued by helicopter crew that was the first on the scene after that mudslide, and this is video of that first rescue just released. the woman in the video lost almost everything she owned, but a rescue crew member was able to go back to pick up some of her personal possessions. well, another somber day in store for thousands of firefighters gathering in boston today to pay final respects to another one of their own. funeral services held yesterday for lieutenant edward walsh, a married father of three who was killed battling a fire last week. firefighter michael kennedy, who also died in that blaze, will be laid to rest this afternoon. and one note from overseas, britain's queen elizabeth meets pope francis today. she and her husband, prince philip, will have a private audience with the pope at the vatican. this is the fifth time elizabeth has met a leader of the catholic church. the first time was back in 1951. just last week president obama had his audience with the pope. and coming up, the pollen

those who think they are middle class has fallen from 53% to 44%. experts say it's a reflection of the widening gap between the rich and everyone else. well, sorry, siri, but you've got some competition. the new windows phone 8.1 update introduces a digital assistant named cortana. she's named after a character in the popular halo video game series. cortana is similar to apple's siri and android's google now. well, there's now an alternative to those allergy shots. the fda has approved a french company's pill. this one goes under the tongue. it reduces allergic reactions to five of the most common grass pollens. like the shots, patients have to start taking them months before the start of the allergy season, so it is too late so far for this year. researchers have revealed a subtle weapon when it comes to marketing cereal. apparently it's eye contact. a cornell university study found kids are more likely to choose a brand of cereal if the character on the box is staring directly into their eyes, and

from the great lakes down to the gulf coast and in the northwest. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in dallas, chicago, memphis, houston, minneapolis, san francisco, denver and kansas city. all right, updating our top story, another mass shooting at the nation's largest army base. >> an iraq war veteran opened fire on his fellow military killing three before turning the gun on himself and leaving 16 others wounded. >> the gunman is identified as active duty soldier ivan lopez who was undergoing psychiatric evaluation for anxiety and depression. he was also on medication. >> president obama has mobilized the department of defense along with the fbi to take the lead in the investigation. we have much more coming up on "good morning america." all right, now to a dramatic emergency landing in brazil. a pilot was forced to land this passenger jet after the front landing gear failed. the pilot had to pull off a pretty incredible belly landing there making the plane touch down only on those rear wheels before lowering that nose to the runway. there were more than 50 people on board. no one was hurt. a school bus driver near san antonio, texas, has been caught on camera mocking a little girl who is crying.

>> cry baby. >> that's the driver urging the other elementary school children on the bus to chime in and chant, teasing the sobbing child even more. she could also be heard calling the girl a cry baby. parents told about the incident were simply outraged. >> she treated the children as if she was a child herself, bullying the child and having the other children follow her example. that's just wrong. and this just in overnight. in a statement to abc news, the superintendent says the bus driver is, quote, no longer employed by the school district. and a warning to parents this morning. police in philadelphia say that they have found razor blades duct taped onto playground equipment. no one was hurt, but it follows a similar incident in illinois a week ago in which a child was injured. pennsylvania authorities think this latest incident could be

the work of a copycat. parents everywhere should examine playground equipment. all right. how far would you go to avoid going to work? well, one man near tampa, florida, went so far, it landed him in jail. police say dwayne yeager actually staged a robbery at his home. it was yeager's neighbor who had a surveillance camera. police reviewed the video. that led to the bust. he told police that he saw yeager leaving early monday morning coming back 45 minutes later. the robber's getaway car that yeager told police about wasn't spotted by any of his neighbors. also making it into our stupid file, check this out. video released by police in houston shows an suv that just couldn't wait for the train at a railroad crossing. oh, my goodness. so the driver, wow, tries to go around the lowered safety bars and gets slammed by that oncoming train. two adults, two children taken to the hospital. everyone is expected to be okay. >> oh, my gosh. >> isn't that terrible? just horrible. >> oh, my goodness. i hate to think about those parents. what were they thinking? >> what were they thinking? >> oh, my goodness. all right.
