good wednesday morning. we begin with breaking news overseas. a frantic scene off the coast of south korea, as a ferry sinks with hundreds of people onboard. >> nearly 300 people remain unaccounted for this morning. about 200 others were rescued. at least two are confirmed dead. most of the passengers were teenagers from a high school near seoul. they were heading to a resort when that ship started taking on water. >> many of them grabbed lifejackets and jumped overboard into the cold 55-degree ocean. dozens of rescue boats, helicopters and a u.s. warship have rushed in to help. we'll be tracking this story all morning long. now to our big story here at home. a security scare in boston hour after the city's honoring of victims of last year's marathon attack. here's a cell phone video. a man in a black veil, wearing a backpack and screaming boston strong. >> he came down the street on the first anniversary of the marathon bombings. police weren't taking any chances. abc's tahman bradley reports.

>> reporter: a security scare at the scene of the upcoming boston marathon. police evacuate an area near the finish line and send in robots and officers wearing protective gear to blow up two unattended bags. authorities say one of the bags contained a rice cooker left by a man who walked near the finish line barefoot in pouring rain. the man, identified by police as kayvon edson, was taken into custody. >> he's being charged with being disorderly, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device. >> reporter: while it may have been a hoax, it brought back painful memories of last year when pressure cooker bombs in backpacks were at the finish line. yesterday, boston marked the one-year anniversary of that incident, with a tribute to the victims and survivors. >> we would never wish the devastation and pain we have experienced on any of you. however, we do wish that all of you, at some point in your lives, feel as loved as we have felt over this last year. >> reporter: the survivors and

first responders, defying the terrorists, marched to the finish line and raised the flag. >> we are boston. we are america. we respond. we endure. we overcome. and we own the finish line. >> reporter: these two brothers, who each lost the leg in the attack, walked the entire race route, along with their family. >> it's an amazing feeling. it really is. >> reporter: next monday, the 118th boston marathon. they're expecting a record number of runners and more than 1 million spectators. they will be protected by what the governor calls security on steroids. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. next, to the stunning about-face from mother nature. wasn't it just like summer a few days ago? >> sure seemed that way. but temperatures plunged across the east, whipping up fierce winds, rain and snow as they fell. now, those storms are moving out nearly off the coast of new england. but the chill will linger. this morning, a 750-foot cargo ship lies beached in chesapeake bay.

winds gusting up to 70 miles per hour pulled it offanchor overnight. also overnight, that same system bringing snow to new york city and other parts of the northeast and dropping temps by as much as 40 degrees. something everyone had hoped they had seen the last of. >> we don't want to hear that four-letter word that starts with an "s." >> reporter: parts of the midwest getting more, yes, snow. detroit has already doubled its snowiest winter ever and now more. near buffalo, near 78 degrees a few days ago, they were preparing for several inches of snow. >> we'll probably be out plowing later tonight. >> reporter: even in the south, snow was falling on flowers already in bloom. all across the region, temperatures are hovering near freezing. >> it's freezing up here. >> reporter: that's a real threat to crops. apples, peaches and strawberries, already coming up. >> pretty much their most vulnerable time. >> reporter: farmers are spending a vigilant night. >> but if we start dropping below 30, we're entering a extremely danger zone. >> reporter: fierce winds blew across the east. in georgia, a falling tree split a house in two, trapping two

women inside. >> i come out of the house and immediately heard the screams. >> reporter: and outside philadelphia, a sudden storm caused neighbors to fear the worst. >> i thought it was a tornado. so, i went back down to the basement. >> reporter: the one encouraging note after a day of intense weather, the cold, wet and misery won't stick around for long. and let's hope that is the last of the snow. what can we expect today? >> accuweather meteorologist jim dickey joins us with the maps and the numbers. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and diana. drying things out today, after widespread flooding, rainfall and snow. that cold air moves out to sea. the cold air has moved in behind it. these are your expected early-morning lows. down to 20, burlington, syracuse. down to 18, buffalo. 24, detroit, challenging record lows there. and meanwhile, another snowstorm is forming across the midwest. snow spreads down to south dakota, across the twin cities, into northern wisconsin, heavy at times here. six to ten inches expected to the south in duluth. john and diana, back to you. >> jim, thank you. there's emergency meetings

over the crisis in ukraine. secretary of state kerry meets with his counterparts to consider new sanctions against russia. this is russian vladimir putin, warns that ukraine is on the brink of civil war. double amputee athlete oscar pistorius will get a few weeks' break. the trial for the murder of his girlfriend is on recess until may 5th. the prosecution's case rested yesterday after pistorius read on the stand a valentine given to him by reeva steenkamp just hours before she died. he says he thought he was shooting an intruder and it was a tragic mistake. we're learning more about the man accused of killing three people at jewish centers outside of kansas city. frazier glenn cross attended his arraignment yesterday via video link. he was wearing a protective vest and sitting in a wheelchair. the 73-year-old cross has a long history of racist and anti-semitic activity, including leading a ku klux klan chapter. an update this morning on a kidnapping saga with a happy ending. frank jansen is the father of a prosecutor who was taken from

his home and then rescued five days later by the fbi in atlanta. five suspects were denied bail in the case. and prosecutors say other suspects are being sought. authorities say the entire plot was masterminded by an inmate who was serving a life sentence. so far the underwater search for malaysian airlines flight 370 isn't coming up with anything. data downloaded overnight from the u.s. robotic submarine deployed to search the sea floor isn't showing anything significant. above, 14 planes and nearly a dozen ships are looking for debris from that jet which disappeared more than a month ago. britain's young royals are now in australia. prince william, kate, and little george, greeted by sunshine after they touched down in sydney this morning. thousands lining the route as they made their way to the city's famous opera house. city's famous opera house. the second stop on their tour down under. they spent ten days in new zealand prior to that. in australia, they will head to the outback to see the ayers rock. and coming up, you probably heard about food prices on the rise. but there are some dinner time favorites that are actually getting cheaper.

snow could be a hazard from north dakota to wisconsin and in the upper rockies, as well. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in minneapolis because of wet snow. and boston, where there's going to be some gusty winds to worry about. now, to a terrifying surveillance video that's truly any parent's worst nightmare. it catches a robbery suspect in a suburban houston home earlier this month. >> at one point, we see the burglar in a baby's room. the child's just sleeping inches away. the police released this video in hopes to identify this guy. >> the parents saw this video and saw the burglar in that close proximity to their sleeping infant. they obviously reacted with sheer terror. >> no one was harmed. in fact, the parents didn't find they had been robbed until they found a laptop and briefcase in the yard in the morning. the burglar also stole 60 bucks. it may be a while before an indiana woman sees her daughter again. she was arrested in michigan after a high-speed chase with her daughter on her lap. she's accused of abducting the 5-year-old during a supervised visit.

and operating the car under the influence of drugs. police also say they found what may be cocaine in the car. and the video is so hard to watch, as she clings on to that child while police are trying to pry her away from her daughter. they were able to track the woman by using the gps in her cell phone. and a texas woman was spared the worst when a pipe smashed through the windshield of her car but was stopped by the rear-view mirror. stacy gross was driving on the highway when an oil tank she got off the next exit and was able to pull into a parking lot. and then, she fell to her knees. >> it was so emotional.reated to a royal first. the duke and duchess taking turns showcasing the main attraction. leaving baby george behind, the royal duo receiving a rock star

welcome as they arrived at the to make an abrupt landing after a bizarre incident in las vegas. the e allegiant air flight had just taken off when it hit a swarm of bees. thousands of bees clouded the windshield. they got sucked into the engine. some passengers began to panic as a burning smell started to fill the plane. >> as soon as the plane lifted, it felled like it was on fire. it smelled like the whole cabin was on fire. >> the pilot initially thought the jet hit a bird in the area. he immediately turned around and landed safely. the shaken passengers boarded another flight and went on to duluth. miley cyrus is recovering after she was hospitalized and forced to cancel a concert in kansas city last night. the 21-year-old pop star is said to have an allergic reaction to antibiotics and was placed on medical rest. she tweeted this picture from her hospital bed. and the caption saying, her octopus and doctors are taking good care of her. she canceled a show in charlotte last week because of the flu.

one little kid in nebraska really, really likes the one across the street from where he lives. >> he likes it so much that he found his way inside the machine. no joke. the 3-year-old had left his apartment when his mom was distracted. >> she called 911. as police were searching the area, someone said the boy was in the bowling alley. yes, he was in the bowling alley. in fact, he was in the claw machine in the bowling alley. the owner let him out. he was just fine. and he got a stuffed animal for his troubles. and he is so cute. >> what's all the fuss about? no big deal. i'm just chilling out. >> playing with the claw. >> why is everybody all excited? >> during our extensive research for the story, we found out this happens more than you might think. >> oh, my goodness. the same deal last summer. another curious youngster climbing into the claw machine. this was also at a bowling alley. keep your eyes on your kids, folks. they really like the claw machine, apparently. and the slot in the back must be really small, so it lets them in. >> not being an engineer, but you make it pushes in one way, but it pushes out. but it doesn't push in. smart. >> they're such cute kids.
