spend more than an hour with him. answered every question, no restrictions at all. >> we'll get to that in a moment. but it is the busiest travel day of the year. and a huge storm coming up the east coast, making driving and flying a little tricky today. hundreds of flights already cancelled. ginger will bring us up to speed in a moment. right. but we are going to begin with ferguson. more violence overnight. dozens arrested as the protests got out of control overnight again. and another police car set on fire. i sat down with the man in the middle of it all. officer darren wilson telling his side of the story for the first time. >> i used my door to push him back and yell at him. to get back. again he pushes the door shut and he just stares at me. and i look back, punches start flying. >> he threw the first punch? >> yes. he threw the first one and hit me in the left side of my face. i just know there's a barrage of swinging, and grabbing and pulling for about ten seconds. at some point, he was actually in the car physically. he had ducked his head and come into the vehicle with me. >> where is your gun at that point? >> i keep it on my right hip.

i take it out, and i point it at him. i said get back or i'm going to shoot you. and his response, immediately, he grabbed the top of my gun, and when he grabbed it, he said, you're too much of a [ bleep ] to shoot me. and while he's doing that, i could feel his hand trying to come over my hand and get inside the trigger guard and try and shoot me with my own gun. >> reporter: wilson got off two shots in the car before brown started to run. >> after i fired that shot, i look over -- >> it went off that time? >> it went off that time. >> he started to run. okay, i missed, the round didn't hit him. i go to exit my car. then i go to exit my car. when i got out, i use my walkie, shots fired, send more cars. and i chased after michael brown. >> you describe michael brown at that moment in the car as a demon. do you know where that word came from? what were you seeing at that moment? >> it was just such a high level of intensity and aggression and anger that it was almost unfathomable to see it. how is this happening.

it was shock. >> and you're positive that you'd have that exact same reaction if he were white? >> yes. >> some of the witnesses have said they thought you were out of control. that somehow you had snapped. >> uh-huh. that would be incorrect. there was never -- the only emotion i ever felt was fear, and then it was survival and training. >> we know from the autopsy reports that no shots went into michael brown from the back. did you fire any shots when he was running away. >> no. >> you only fired to his front? >> correct. >> as you know some of the eyewitnesss said at the moment he turned around he turned around and put his hands up. >> that would be uncorrect -- incorrect. >> no way. >> no way. >> some witnesses have also said they saw you stand over him and shoot him in the top of his head. >> that would be incorrect. that would be incorrect. >> and he's down now? >> yes. >> you know he's dead? >> yes. they tell you afterwards, there are times you won't remember

where it's fast, metimes where it's slow. that was the time it was slow motion for me. and i saw the face he had go blank. everything was just blank and i knew immediately that he had passed. >> what did you think? >> need help. i got back on the radio and i said, send a supervisor and every car we have. >> you never shot your gun before, and now a man is dead. >> uh-huh. >> does that put you in shock? what is going through your mind at that point? what are you feeling at that point? >> shock would be a good way to describe it. there is not a cop out there that say, i'm going to use my gun today. no one wants to. no one ever wants to do that. it happened in a minute. >> the brown family came out with a statement where they said, we are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequences of his actions. what do you think when you hear that? >> i think those are grieving parents mourning the loss of their son. >> they're saying that you have to face the consequences of your actions.

>> uh-huh. >> do you think there's anything you can say to them that can change their minds or hearts? >> i don't think there's anything i can say. but, again, i'm sorry that their son lost his life. it wasn't the intention of that day. it's what occurred that day. and there's no -- nothing you can say that's going to make a parent feel better. >> do you feel any remorse? >> everyone feels remorse when a life's lost. like i told you before, i never wanted to take anybody's life. you know, that's not the good part of the job. that's the bad part of the job. so, yes, there is remorse. >> george, as you know, a lot of reaction to the interview. and people not only listening closely to what he said, but he said it. and many people are questioning his demeanor. >> yeah. you know, he's very straight forward, very clinical in describing what happened. he has been telling the same story since he first went back to the police station that afternoon. but you're right. not a lot of emotion bubbling up

there. he sees himself as a police officer doing his duty that day. and he's not going to give much more than those facts. >> and in fact he told you he felt he was doing his job. >> because of that, he says he has a clean conscious. >> so, you have more of the interview coming up? >> yes, we have more coming up in the next half hour. talking about what his life is like for him right now and what's next for him. that's coming up in a little bit. and we will post the whole interview, every question and answer on our website later this morning. >> all right. it was a relatively calm night in ferguson after monday night's protest and looting, and national guard's presence felt on the streets last night. and alex perez is on the ground in ferguson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there are scenes of damage like this all across ferguson this morning. take a look at this here. an entire row of cars completely burned. now, overnight, about 2200 national guardsman began controlling the streets of ferguson and what a stark difference from what we saw here

monday night. there were still protests outside the ferguson police station, but the crowds are smaller and less violent. about 45 people were arrested overnight. now, across the country, from coast-to-coast. there were a number of people in protest. people standing in solidarity with the brown family. in minneapolis one woman had to be streeted for minor injuries after a crowd plowed through a group of protesters there. now, missouri governor p says the national guard will remain in place as long as necessary. robin, george? we're going to move on to another big story of the morning now. this thanksgiving weather. big storm moving up the east coast. snow in the midwest. starting to turn the biggest traveling day of the year into a nightmare for millions of americans on the move. ginger is tracking it all. >> and as advertised, starting as rain, and heavy rain for a lot of people, up through florida, south and north carolina. washington, d.c. to philadelphia. the roads are wet. we have pictures, seen video all morning. this is going to be a problem

for you. even if it doesn't change to snow until later in the afternoon. you're going to see those heavy rains change over. watch this. just north and west, away from the coast, all changes over right there at noon. the pink line is sleet. a little mix. the heaviest snow totals are going to come right here, just west of the pink line. anywhere from albany through interior new england. and then i think it wraps around and late tonight it all starts to move off. but we all will see some flakes, even though you will not see a ton of accumulation right there. but thanksgiving itself, a lot dryer. so, how much snow and where? you have to move just away from the coast and see the totals go up to 4 to 8 inches anywhere in the pink. through the mountains of virginia, through pennsylvania into parts of new york and eventually maine. that's a look at the snow for now. i will have your full holiday forecast, west to east. there are other places worried about this this morning, including the midwest. robin? >> everybody in it. all right, ginger. but more than 40 million americans will be driving this

holiday weekend, we have been saying. rob marciano is out on the roads in new york city this morning for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it's a dicey travel day as ginger mentioned. rain coming down here in new york city on the west side highway. take a look out the front windshield. there's going to be some hydroplaning in spots. if you travel i-95, probably the busiest interstate corridor from d.c. to boston. it will all be wet today. not going to stick there. but a lot of traffic for sure. go further north up the interstate throughway, i-91, hit snow. and i-90 from boston to buffalo, that's going to be snow covered and a bit treacherous. turns out, not only today is a busy travel day, but tomorrow, 90% of americans that travel on thanksgiving, will travel by car. so keep your distance, keep your patience, and keep yourself and your kids in the back seat cool. happy thanksgiving, everybody. >> thank you for keeping your eyes on the road, rob. hundreds of flights scansled because of the weather.

thousands of delays expected across the country. this map shows flights in the air early in the day. david kerley is in atlanta at the nation's busiest airport. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning. we are at the delta tower. and they are heading out there later today. the good news so far, the folks in the tower have not had to add any cancellations. there are going to be some delays in the washington area and further north. and they are keeping a very close eye on that storm. this morning some passengers are already home, refusing to chance the weather. >> i heard the weather, i just changed my flight. >> reporter: airlines waiving ticket change fees, hoping to move as many passengers as possible before the storm. and it was a smart move. before the day even started, 200 flights had already been canceled. >> i had about three hours to scramble and get here. so, it's been it fun. >> reporter: fun is not what the thousands of airline workers are expecting today. 32-32 -- >> reporter: here in delta's

atlanta tower, they make sure aircraft are ready to go. they know that northeast storm will reach down here on one of the busiest travel days of the year. >> it all comes together with the training and -- that we have. that's where it's a test of our mettle. >> reporter: it's not just the weather, it's a challenge to get your bag home with you. here in atlanta, delta has 40 miles of conveyor belts 6789 this morning they'll handle an 15% increase in bags, an extra 10,000 bags. and it will be an extra 20,000 bags on sunday, the busiest travel day of the year for delta. there is a little bit of good news. and that is they're expecting a little less snow up in the northeast. that could mean fewer cancellations. at least that's the hope. everybody here is hoping to get everybody home for thanksgiving. >> so is everyone in our family. thank you. now to amy with the other top stories. good morning, everyone. we begin with new details about a daring raid by u.s. special forces in the pre dawn hours tuesday. they stormed a cave in eastern yemen, to rescue eight hostages

held by al qaeda militants. a shootout ensued but the hostages were evacuated by a nearby helicopter. and yemen has allowed militant groups to gain ground in recent months. two men from minneapolis are charged with trying to join isis fighters in syria. one was stopped trying to board a flight to turkey. the other made it to syria. about a dozen somali americans from minnesota have flown to the middle east to join isis. back here at home, the university of virginia is hiring an outside law firm to investigate the school's response to disturbing sexual assault allegations at a fraternity. school officials tuesday adopted a zero tolerance policy towards sexual assault, though they admitted it is too early to say how that policy will be implemented. in oklahoma, a suspect fleeing police took a wrong turn. he ended up driving down this dead-end road. he backs up and decides to floor it, hoping to crash, whoa, through the fence at the end of the street. watch, it did not work for him. the fence stops him.

it becomes a trap of sorts. seconds later, puts his hands up, appearing to surrender. but then, tries to fake out the police and takes off on foot, not knowing he's running towards a national guard facility where two guardsman helped police tackle him. no one was injured perhaps except for his pride. a dramatic jewelry heist in paris. cell phone video catching the scene in a cartier boutique in a busy shopping district. these thieves then fled police in a chase across the river, then tried to hide in a beauty salon where they took a hostage at gunpoint. the gunman a eventually surrendered and the jewels were recovered. a terrifying experience for a woman in australia. the ground suddenly gave way and she was swallowed by a nine-foot sinkhole. she was forced to tread water up to her waist for 20 minutes before rescuers were able to arrive and pulled her out. and an extraordinary

discovery in a small library in france. this is an original book of shakespeare's play. it is nearly 400 years old. the book was discovered by chance. its title page had been torn off. experts say it could sell for more than $7 million. yes. that's correct. and some say it could go even higher. but it's priceless, and the sky's the limit on that. and finally, if you're flying today, no matter how long the delay is, here's something to consider. things could be worse. case in point, this flight in russia where passengers were told to get out of the plane and push because the plane's wheels were so frozen, they were actually stuck to the runway. the temperature? 58 degrees below zero. apparently not unusual for this time of year in siberia. hopefully things won't get that bad today in the northeast. don't think they will, guys. just take that with you as you're heading to the airport. >> not sure i'm getting on the plane after i have to push it. >> do you get a discount on your

it was uncomfortable, but i think it helped. just take precautions. everything you do, everywhere you go. from where you sit in a restaurant to where you can drive. everything has to go through your head, make sure no one's following you. everything. >> what's the most important thing you want the american people to know about you right now? >> we're just simple, every day, normal people. there's really nothing special or anything about us. we're just normal people. >> and when you see the parents, when you see the anger, do you think that there's something more that all police can do in your situation? >> what do you mean by that? >> what -- what do you think is at the heart of this anger that just seems to be seething throughout ferguson. seems like there's a lot of anger beneath the surface. >> i think there's a communication breakdown. communication has to be re-established. >> between? >> everybody.

all parties involved. >> but you feel that you had that in your day-to-day work on the force. >> i enjoyed working in ferguson. >> past tense, not going to happen again? >> do you think it's possible? do you think they would accept me? do you think it would be safe for me? those are questions not only for me, but for all of the other officers. the attention brought to me going to hurt one of them? put them in the situation? >> you're going to resign the force? >> no decisions have been made, but these are ideas and thoughts we are contemplating. >> what do you want going forward? >> just live a normal life. >> is that possible? >> it will be different. it will be a new normal. but we'll find it somehow. >> any away you can turn what you experienced, what you were a part of, into something good. >> i'd love to teach people. give people more insight on uses of force. anything i can, anything that i can get out of this career i've had thus far. and of the incident. i would love to give someone else. >> anything else you wanted to

do? >> not really. that was the job of my life. loved it. i pictured being there on -- my only goal was to be promoted as sergeant. that's all i ever wanted. i wanted to stay on the road and retire as sergeant. that's all i never wanted. >> you love being a police officer? >> i love it. >> you got married. >> we did. >> and you're about to have a baby as well. >> yes. i'm really just a simple guy. that's all i am. he got married just a few weeks ago. went to the courthouse. sometimes went to restaurants and hung out. had to be careful. grew a beard for a while. >> michael brown's family has responded. >> they've responded to the news. they're not happy. the mother said they believe what the officer is saying adds insult to injury. they still don't accept his story. there's still a lot of anger out there. >> a lot of anger on both sides. some people who agree with what the officer has said.

in fact, just a matter of seconds. alarm systems, designed to protect you and make you feel safe. an estimated 38 million americans turn to these systems to help secure their homes and businesses. but are you really as safe as you think you are? >> i just hit go. >> reporter: logan, a cyber researcher, says he's found some alarming weaknesses in some home security systems. all it takes is the right tools and know how. >> every system i have tested, which has been from four different manufacturers, they've all been vulnerable in the exact same way. >> reporter: tennesseans ryan and bonnie allowing "gma" on the lookout to visit their house and for logan to test the alarm system, provided by adt, one of the leading home security companies. you want peace of mind, go to sleep knowing you're safe. >> absolutely. >> reporter: to disrupt the

system, he uses a laptop equipped with special software, an antenna, and this device that detects radio frequencies from wireless alarm systems. logan shows three ways he is able to interfere with the system. first, he sends a false alarm, causing the homeowner to receive a signal on their key pad that a closed door is open. >> it will keep doing that until i hit stop. >> reporter: homeowners may think they need to open and close the door to reset the system, potentially leaving them open to an intruder. >> that was way too easy. his second demonstration is even more startling. he disarms the system. >> all i have to do here is hit play. creates interference with the door sensor. >> reporter: you said it's disarmed, right? >> should be. >> reporter: i don't hear an alarm. for the final demonstration, when it's activated and other movement, like when a door opens

and closes. you're basically learning the family's patterns. >> exactly. >> reporter: and learning the best time to strike. >> yes. >> reporter: if you're a perpetrator. after restoring the homeowner's system, logan says the best way to stay safe -- >> be aware this is possible. they should call their provider and ask them, hey, is my system vulnerable to these source of attacks? >> reporter: adt says they are committed to providing our customers with continual security and technology advancements and it works regularly with our suppliers to enhance the security of our products. they invited anyone with concerns to contact them. while there is no record of the attacks, logan still warns. >> it may not be a huge concern today, but it will be in the future. >> reporter: for ryan and bonnie, the experiment is mind-boggling. >> no idea. >> blew my mind. >> reporter: so what can you do? call your security company and ask them what their solution is. pressure them in staying ahead of this. our expert told us because of

good morning, i'm eric thomas. what about the weather for the day before thanksgiving? mike? >> you may have noticed the extra haze out there because we have more pollution already this morning than 24 hours ago. spare the air day, no wood burning at all today. and look at the golden gate bridge. it looks pretty nice. as you look off in the distance you can see some haze. temperatures 5 to 10 degrees warmer than average today. that will put us in the upper 60s to low 70s. we'll do it again tomorrow, likely a spare the air day again and the rain and cler weather saturday through tuesday. mike, another sig alert for anyone heading to sfo, take this one down. this is an overturned vehicle that's blocking the connector ramp from southbound 101 to westbound 380.
