for a man who ran over and killed a warehouse worker at true world foods. the victim confronted the suspect for possibly stealing wooden palettes. nbc news 7 reporter elissa harrington is live at the scene. ely's snarks >> reporter: police are here on scene and have been here for seven hours now. police say that he did work here at true world foods that distributes seafood and other items for wholesale and investigators are following up on some strong leads. a you few employees along san leandro's williams street witnessed the horrifying crime. they told police a man in a pickup truck purposefully ran over their co-worker killing him. it happened around 11:45 this morning. lieutenant robert mcmanus says that employee might have confronted the suspect committing a crime on the property. >> we have some palettes in the parking lot. they have been moved, and we think that there may have been a palette theft in progress that very well could have been

interrupted by run of the employees. >> reporter: sky 7 showed police gathered in the back park lot. palette thefts are common in industrial areas. people bring them to salvage yards for money. >> very shocking. that's all can i say. >> reporter: alex meena is a driver for the company. he was shocked to see a coroner and crime scene team scouring the parking lot. >> very, very, very scary and very shocking and, you know, i just don't have, you know, no words to say about this, you know. this is horrible, horrible. >> reporter: other employees were visibly upset. detectives drove some witnesses to the police station for questioning. police have only a vague description of the vehicle they are looking for. >> the best that we have right now is a light-colored pickup truck. there's a possibility that we'll have palettes in the back. >> they are trying to track down surveillance video to get a license plate number and the direction the driver went when he sped from the scene n.san leandro, elisa harrington, abc 7

news. an assault weapon is what prevented police -- adam powell stalked the officers and intended to shoot them at a starbucks on lincoln road west. powell took off from a house in suisun city where his 2-year-old son was critically wounded when he consistently shot himself. powell is accused of bursting into the starbucks and pointing his weapon and the man ran when the gun jammed and the boy's sister said that's totally out of powell. >> i don't know what went through his mind at the moment. anybody out there don't really look at him as a suspect. he probably was really distraught. >> he was wearing body armor and his assault weapon was affixed with a barrel-type magazine that holds approximately 70 rounds of high-powered ammunition. >> officer shot powell three times. he's hospitalized in critical

condition. new details now on a shooting in los altos hills. police have revealed it stemmed from a transcontinental trip for revenge. a resident near oak knoll circle shared these pictures. a man was found armed and wounded outside a house that. man had followed him from georgia who sought a restraining order against him possibly for domestic violence. the man shot at the house, and he was shot in turn. he's been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. jury selection began today in a murder of morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. the man accused of killing lamar, antolin garcia-torres, could potentially face the death penalty. he's pleaded not guilty to all charges. lamar vanished in 2012. her body was never found. the judge warned potential jurors the trial could take six months. many asked to be dismissed for hardship. the judge left open the possibility of a change in venue because of the high-profile nature of the case. it was a rough landing for a

twin turbo prop at hayward airport this afternoon. sky 7 shows you what happened. the fire department says this 12-seater suffered some kind of malfunction with the landing gear causing it to skid off the runway. workers pulled the plane out of the grass by hand with the help of a tug. neither of the two people on board was hurt. the rain we got this weekend has residents of one flood-prone san francisco neighborhood once again demanding the city fix its aging sewer system. while there wasn't problem flooding in the mission terrace neighborhood this time. residents are worried about the rainy season ahead. here's abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler. >> every single time there's rain in the forecast we're on pins and needles. >> reporter: no wonder. this was the scene outside blaine bachelder's home in the mission terrace neighbor two years ago, raw sewage mixed with storm water, sending cars floating down the street and gushing into basements and garages. she and her husband chris have spent thousands of dollars on repairs.

update. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. two lifelong friends from san jose died while on vacation in arizona. rescue pulled the men's bodies from fossil creek falls. the two men vanished in the water on saturday. divers dropped into the water by helicopter and found the men's bodies yesterday morning at the remote waterfall creek. samsung is so serious about getting its fire-prone phones away from passengers, the company has set up an exchange booth and san francisco today. all of this comes after a total travel ban on their phone. more live from sfr tonight. >> reporter: sfo is actually one of a few airports across the country that samsung has dispatched a team of people who

they can go through the terminal and try to make -- helene hand her husband are wrapping up a tour through the american southwest and is proud of one picture in particular taken on her smartphone and when she was checking in to her flight back on quantus she learned she couldn't take her samsung 7 galaxy 7, staying she couldn't come on it. any of the of these is banned on the flights. the nope 7 already had restrictions since a recall was issued by the company last month, but after one of the models exploded on a southwest flight earlier this month, the u.s. department of transportation banned all note 7s, including the replacements. one woman tells me her husband was flying through idaho this weekend and learned about the restrictions the hard way.

critics is saying this is yet another example of putting college athletics ahead of violence against rim. stanford law professor michelle dawber has been leading the campaign to recall the judge, not just for the way he handled the brock turner rape case but a case that happened at this building supply parking lot last year and then 19-year-old keenan smith entered a guilty plea for domestic abuse begins his girlfriend. judge persky worked out a plea deal for him to attend golf prevention classes for a year and also perform 28 days of community service, that's after serving 32 days in jail. however, smith has not been complying. >> the judge had many, many opportunities to hold of this young man accountable and to make sure that he served his sentence. >> reporter: smith will be in court tuesday morning but will see a different judge. his public defender talked to us by phone says smith's case is being politicized. >> they could ask for him to go into jail, and i have been doing

this for a very long time, and i've never seen the prosecution add someone to the calendar in order to violate them when probation is not asking for a violation. >> that view is also supported by a fellow public defender gary goodman who says smith is going to classes by day and working an overnight job to pay the $50 fee for each the violence prevention classes. >> it was a district attorney's office that reduced this case to a misdemeanor. the probation department was monitoring this person quite well. they knew exactly what this person was doing. >> the district attorney's office declined to do an interview about the case. in palo alto, david louie, abc 7 news. the president of san jose state university promised changes today in how students are notified of sexual assaults. this comes after two students accused a water polo plafg raining them over the weekend. the university was criticized for waiting more than a month before revealing the incidents had happened. the victims told investigators the assaults took place at an

off-campus party. university president mary papazian said, quote, i write to you today to assure you i'm determined to do everything possible to assure that sjsu is a safe, caring, inclusive community. uc berkeley student activists are sending out a strong message to raise awareness of domestic violence today. they took a picture to share. the group claimed college campuses are not only plagued but sexual assault but also by domestic violence. >> we're doing a photo campaign where people who have write boards and writing down what is love, love is healthy and safe and trust and we want to spread the word about healthy relationships. >> reporter: intimate partner violence commission at uc berkeley and the group organized today's effort. budget cuts will force the call center in california to

close. the state announced it would cut the call center's budget by 72%. last week the county decided to shut it down early. the county's employment services director told the "east bay times" her office will help find work for all 221 employees to avoid layoffs. calls will now be routed to two other state call centers. it's a measure that promised to cap drug prices in california, though some worry that would happen on the backs of veterans. >> yeah. 7 on your side's michael finney is here with a look at prop 61 here. >> a huge rally for prop 61 in sacramento today. if passed by voters. state of california would pay no more than the veterans administration for drugs. buy law pharmaceutical companies must give the v.a. huge price breaks. veterans are coming down on both sides of the measure. >> we signed up to protect this country against threats, both foreign and domestic, and when

that breaking news is out of the east bay. >> san leandro police are telling us a driver whose truck looks like the one that ran down a warehouse worker this morning has just been detained in east oakland. sky 7 is over the area where police found the truck. you might recall they were saying that he might have been trying to steel wooden palettes and we do see wooden palettes in the back of the truck. >> the warehouse worker was killed trying to stop someone from stealing wooden palettes from the back parking lot on williams near mers ed street. the worker was driven over the suspect sped away. >> an unmanned rocket is loaded with 5,100 pounds of supplies
