>> pg&e has extra crews working to take care of power outages. >> it could be a very long night in the santa cruz mountains where mudslides are a major concern and the loma fire burn zone. >> let's head to marin county. this is a look from our mt. tam camera. you can see the lens is quite wet with droplets there and lots of rain from high up there. the rain we're seeing right now is just the beginning. good evening, i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley. abc 7 was in piedmont where steady rain is falling this afternoon. drivers used their windshield wipers and people had their umbrellas out. >> we began our team coverage with meteorologist sandhya patel. >> the system has stalled out but we're seeing the showers light in intensity. i'll close in where we're seeing the wet weather around pacifica, rollins boulevard around burlingame as we head into

north bay now from yountville to napa. panning around from fairfield out towards pittsburg, here's tropical storm seymour and it's funneling in towards the bay area where we're seeing actually some of this moisture leading to some intense rain just southwest of the san luis obispo county coastline. lightning strikes have been developing here. we take a look at the storm impact scale. it's a 2. a moderate strength storm, tonight through friday. half an inch to an inch expected for some areas. some spots pick up an inch plus, 2 to 4 inches for the hills and a potential for thunderstorms as well. flash flood watch is up through friday, 7:00 a.m., for the burn

areas south of monterey. debris flows and mudslides are not out of the question. hour by hour forecast, moderate rainfall at 6:00 p.m. getting heavier as we head into around the 9:00, 10:00 hour. you can see the widespread yellows and oranges and this continues well beyond tonight. you can always download our abc 7 news app. you can track the storm with the news app. you can enable push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or a tablet, especially with the heavy rain coming, flood advisory could be issued. back in a few minutes. kristen and dan? >> thank you very much. here's a look at the map of the loma fire burn zone in the south bay. it's an area of major concern because it could cause mudslides. >> chris nguyen is in alameda with the story tonight. chris? >> reporter: dan and kristen, the rain has been falling off

and on throughout the day here in san jose. we're live where flooding has been known to happen in alameda during previous storms. no problems to report right now. but we visited the santa cruz mountains earlier where mudslides are very much a possibility. roadside auto repairman jim haas has been responding to service calls for more than 20 years. >> during the summer, lots of cars leave oil on the ground. during the day, the roads are slippery. >> reporter: today on loma prieta road, relief for this drive after getting a flat tire. >> we're going through a drought right now, of course, and we need regrowth up in this area. >> reporter: in the santa cruz mountains, a growing concern for flooding and mudslides with today's rainfall, especially within the burn zone. a lot of brush and grass burned off in the area spanning more than 4500 acres. cal fire says rocks that have fallen down onto the roadways could be a sign of soil

instability. >> with those kinds of conditions, the water doesn't necessarily get absorbed or saturated into the soil as well. >> reporter: division chief jim crawford says wherever you are in the bay area, it's important to be ready for the rain. >> if you live in an area that's prone to flooding, it doesn't even necessarily take a big storm. sometimes it's about the rate that falls over a period of time. if we have an inch or more per hour, we can see small flooding in communities. >> reporter: crashes are also on the minds of many. highway 17 was the scene of multiple accidents throughout the day, including this three-vehicle collision coming up the hill as well as this car that crashed into a guardrail on the way down. a frustrating afternoon for these commuters. >> pay attention to your tires' air pressure, slow down and be courteous of the other drivers. >> but a good reminder for the rest of us to be alert. you can see it's lined with

plenty of trees. branches have been known to fall down during previous storms. that's something that crews will be keeping an eye on throughout the night. we're live in san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7. >> chris, thank you. parts of the north bay are getting wet right now. >> let's give you a live look at highway 101 in san rafael where we've seen rain all afternoon and traffic is moving very slowly, especially in the northbound direction. >> it really is. >> laura anthony is live in downtown san rafael with how people and animals are getting ready. laura? >> reporter: the heavier rain has yet to move in here but we did find here in marin county that both people and their pets are prepared. san rafael arborist natalie kasey spent part of her day examining trees in the san rafael neighborhood, the same neighborhood where a 77-year-old man was killed by a falling

eucalyptus last saturday. >> we've gotten about three or four calls so far from just this neighborhood. >> reporter: kasey says eucalyptus can be vulnerable because of their shallow roots. >> it's good to just have a look at your trees. if you have movement, definitely call someone. if your trees haven't been looked at in a while, call an arborist to have them look. >> reporter: but once the rain hits, it's time to break out the storm gear. for humans, that usually means umbrellas. for dogs, that could mean a special coat. >> i notice a lot of dogs around here have rain coats. >> yeah. i mean, i think this is a community of people who love their animals as family so why not protect them from rain? >> reporter: jake's owner tells us he has a fear of the rain and flat out won't go out in the rain without his rain slicker.

>> he has a lot of sweaters, a lot of different outfits and he loves being dressed up. >> reporter: we're expecting a heavier rain to move in this evening but as you saw there in our story, some folks welcomed this weather not only for their pets but also enjoy getting their own winter clothing out and giving it a run. in san rafael, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, thank you very much. right now, it's already been ten days this month and we've already exceeded the amount of rain for an average october month. a pretty wet october already. >> absolutely. breaking news right now. >> we do indeed. this is a live look from new york city at laguardia airport where vice presidential candidate mike pence's plane has skidded off the runway. you can see the weather is raw there as it is here. >> it happened not too long ago before 8:00 east coast time. so just not too long ago.

everyone is fine. one reporter on the plane with pence says that we could feel the plane moving and it was just not a natural landing that would you experience so after landing it did skid off the runway but you can see the candidate and his entourage and they are all fine. >> everybody is fine but these candidates running for office, high office like this are constantly on planes. many times a day, zipping all over the country. and most of the time it happens without incident but this time there was. no harm, no foul, everyone is okay. >> and it appears to be stormy there as well. >> it is indeed. a homicide family's victim found the suspect. he was participating in a program to turn his life around. melanie woodrow is in the newsroom with the latest on the story. melanie? >> the victim was 29 years old and a father of two. the suspect, still a teenager

and a member of a controversial program that is now receiving even more scrutiny. outside richmond court, his family reflected on seeing the 19-year-old charged with their son's death in person for the first time. >> it was not good. >> it made me sick because i feel as though -- it's like he doesn't care. it's like it's a joke. >> reporter: dawaun killed him on september 19th. >> we're feeling a great loss. >> reporter: he was in a controversial richmond mentorship program that pays them for work they do as well as meeting certain life map goals. it's funded by private donations and taxpayer money. earlier this month, we asked about the program. >> we're not paying anyone to stop shooting. this is a life leadership development opportunity. it just so happens to be

designed for young men suspected of being lethal fire offenders in the city of richmond. there's no program in this world that can pay a criminal any money. >> bogan disagrees. he says 75% of the program's fellows are not a suspect in a new firearm related crime. as for the ones who are like rice -- >> this further exposes, i believe, these experiences just how difficult this work is. >> there's no way that you should pay killers not to kill when they kill. >> they still have guns. it's ridiculous and i want it shut down. i'm going to do everything in my power to shut it down. >> reporter: rice's mother was also in court today. she said she had no comment. in richmond, melanie woodrow, abc 7. some athletes are making history. coming up, football in fremont. why a local teen is about to go

there are hundreds of football teams in the bay area but one team is unique. all of the players are either hard of hearing or deaf and for the first time their game will be shown on national tv.

lyanne mel lan >> reporter: the rain has stopped for now and this team has every intention of making it win number nine. >> they are very excited and very nervous. >> reporter: at this pep rally, you can feel the excitement and sense the energy. expressing it is nearly done with hands. this is the california school for the deaf in fremont and tonight their football team is closer to stardom as they are set to appear on espn 2. their fans know how to motivate them off and on the field. >> they can sense it. they can sense it. you see the hand waves. it's very visual. you see the clapping. >> reporter: last year, they were featured in this documentary. so many questions, so many opportunities to prove they are no different than any other all-american football team. well, maybe in some aspects of

the game they are. >> most of my kids use american sign language. and they sign full american sign language. >> reporter: after that documentary aired, five football players transferred here. today, the coach warren keller, introduced them. being on national tv has helped the school highlight their program which helps deaf children navigate through the rest of society. csd is only one of two public schools in california for the deaf. they start as early as preschool and go through high school. >> our kids really fully survive and thrive and have confidence. there's nothing that they can't do. >> reporter: whatever method you use, words or sign language, it means true grit. and right now the eagles are on top 8-0. they scored a touchdown and then went for the conversion. now, come back at 6:00 and we'll have an update for you.

live in fremont, lyanne melendez, abc 7. the coast guard is being credited with a $70 million cocaine bust. crew members seized more than 2 tons off of coke in september. this is video showing them on board. five people were arrested. authorities in the north bay arrested a man after he crashed a stolen vehicle into nine different cars during a chase this morning. the pursuit began in roanoke park around 11:00 and went on to northbound 101 before the suspect exited on to santa rosa avenue. it ended on hearn avenue overpass. no one was seriously hurt, as big of a mess as this was. the driver, of course, was arrested. happening now, researchers

are on thornton state beach trying to figure out what killed this blue whale that washed ashore yesterday. they will be examining the mammal's the internal organs. >> the goal is to find out what is going on with the animal and what its cause of death is. >> researchers say a passing ship or sharks most likely killed that whale. the center has responded to 30 washed-up whales so far this year but this is only the seventh blue whale in its 41-year history. this is the last weekend to enjoy beach fires in san francisco. abc 7 was in ocean beach where workers lit a ceremonial last fire before the activity is temporarily banned on november 1st. this is the first time that they have banned them and it gives them a chance to do beach

maintenance. >> pulling the fire pits for a few months will allow us to do a thorough cleaning of the beach and take a rest from the usage will improve the overall health and quality of the beach for folks to enjoy the rest of the year. >> beach fires will be allowed again beginning on march 1st. good evening to you. we're getting much needed rain here in the bay area. timing is not so great. live doppler chaking the rainfall. it's light across the bay area at this hour. taking you into the east bay, dublin, 680, 580, it's going to be a slick evening commute. oakland, piedmont, emeryville, you can see it's pretty wet around this area. shot tea showers in south san francisco, san bruno with showers also in the north bay around marin, novato and the fairfax area. the rainfall will pick up in

intensity. take a look at what is ahead. the moisture plume you'll see southwest of monterey. lightning strikes have dissipated. look at all of this moisture here in association with this hurricane seymour that has weakened to a tropical storm. we're getting rain from our mt. tam cam. if you can stay inside and watch it, it's a pretty sight. san francisco, 63. oakland, 64. san jose, cooler than yesterday. clouds are stacked up but no roadways at this hour from this vantage point. low 60s from santa rosa to concord and a pretty nice view as we look at the waves crashing there up against the shoreline. moderate to heavy rain tonight. a drenching for your morning drive with a weaker storm arriving this weekend. the current storm on our storm impact scale is a 2. it's a moderate strength storm between now and friday. an inch to half an inch of rain.

2 to 4 inches over the hills with a thunderstorm possibility into tomorrow morning. 6:00 tonight, we're looking at the light to moderate rain. when you're sitting down for dinner, you might hear the pitter patter of raindrops. i want to draw your attention to the yellows and oranges. the soaking is in the north bay. look at 6:00 a.m. peninsula, san francisco, even towards the south bay, you're getting hit hard in the inland east bay and 7:00 a.m., around 8:00 a.m., it's a sloppy mess for your morning commute. when you're taking your kids off to school or heading off to work, be prepared for an extra slow-going commute. at noontime, looking at showers that are continuing through the evening hours. as we look at the sierra nevada, the rainfall there will turn to snow but not immediately. for now, it's going to be a lot

of rain with this system. here in the bay area, rainfall totals anywhere from three-quarters to almost an inch of rain. some spots pick up more than an inch. tomorrow morning, a nasty morning commute, mid-50s to the low 60s. make sure you have the rain gear for tonight. temperatures in the 60s for the bay area. now we look at the weekend storm. this is going to be weaker and colder. 3:00, saturday afternoon, scattered showers, rainfall picks up. saturday night, going into sunday morning when we may see pockets of moderate rain and then sunday afternoon, scattered showers. the sierra will see the snow if you're traveling. winter storm watch, saturday night through sunday evening. snow level drops to 6,000. half a foot to a foot expected at pass levels with 1 to 3 feet at the highest peaks. a 2 on the storm impact scale for your morning soaking tomorrow. next system, covering saturday into sunday, we'll have early morning lingering showers on saturday and then evening
