washington for gun control. the president feeling the pressure. and our chief white house correspondent jon karl has the latest joining us from washington. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the president had praised law enforcement for its response to the parkland shooting. but over the weekend, he unleashed a stunning new allegation, suggesting that the fbi failed to stop the shooter because it was too busy with the russia investigation. just days after he visited victims of the shooting, the president tweeted over the weekend -- very sad that the fbi missed all of the many signals sent out by the florida school shooter. this is not acceptable. they are spending too much time trying to prove russian collusion with the trump campaign. there is no collusion. president trump's tweet linking one of the worst school shootings in american history with the russian investigation overseen by his justice department drew sharp criticism. including from republicans. >> the president should be staying out of law enforcement business. >> reporter: arizona congressman ruben gallego blasted the

president on twitter. children are being buried today. could you please act presidential at least on their behalf? you really have no shame. the president is apparently fixated on friday's indictment of 13 russians behind an alleged scheme to meddle in american politics starting in 2014. he even went after his own national security adviser, h.r. mcmaster. after he said that evidence of russian hacking was, quote, incontrovertible. the president tweeting, general mcmaster forgot to say the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the russians. he later tweeted again, if it was the goal of the russians to create discord, disruption, and chaos in the u.s., then with all the committee hearings, investigations, and party hatred, they have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. they are laughing their expletives off in moscow. get smart america. the president also took aim at

oprah winfrey, after she appeared on "60 minutes" talking to michigan voters. the president tweeting, just watched a very insecure oprah winfrey who, at one point, i knew very well, interview a panel of people on "60 minutes." the questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. hope oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated, just like all the others. the white house says the president will focus on the parkland shooting with several events here at the white house this week, including what officials are calling a listening session with high school students and teachers on wednesday. robin? >> jon, is there any indication at all that the president could change his stance concerning gun control laws? >> reporter: well, we'll see. we know that officials have told us the president said we need to quote do something in response to this shooting. "the washington post" reported the president was actually surveying people in mar-a-lago over the weekend, asking whether or not he should change his

stance on gun control. but robin, since the shooting, the president has barely uttered the word gun or guns at all. >> yeah, and much less gun control. we haven't heard that from him. thank you very much. cecilia, you spend a lot of time in that briefing room at the white house. what do you think? >> well, this one seems different from the resounding call for change from the kids in florida. we haven't heard the president say it's too soon to talk about gun control as he has before. but i gotta say, you know, this is a republican-controlled congress. it doesn't feel like there's momentum to make a big change right now on capitol hill. >> those kids are not going away. >> they have a loud call there. as we saw, the teen survivors of the florida school shooting are demanding change and calling for action on gun control. announcing a march on washington next month, called a march for our lives. abc's adrienne bankert is in parkland with more. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning to you, too, cecilia.

yes, they are some of the best and brightest here in parkland. and after facing tragedy, losing friends and teachers, they have become the faces of this new movement. using their heartache and taking action. still recovering. broward county sheriff scott israel came to the bedside of an injured teen. being hailed a hero this morning. 15-year-old anthony borges shot four times while trying to lock a classroom door. placing his body between the bullets and his classmates who all survived uninjured. as those who witnessed the violence are still reeling. this morning, the students at marjory stoneman douglas high are demanding their voices be heard. >> my innocence. our innocence has been taken from us. >> reporter: speaking at gun control rallies on saturday and sunday, sparking the movement, never again. >> adults have failed us, honestly, and kids are dying because of it. change needs to happen so no more lives are lost.

>> reporter: this morning, they say gun reform must become a reality. >> we are going to be the kids that you read about in textbooks. not because we're going to be another statistic about mass shootings in america. we're going to change the law. >> reporter: on tuesday, students meet with state lawmakers in tallahassee. and from there, prepare for rallies this week in parkland, florida, and across the country next month, including a march on washington. >> people are saying that it's not time to talk about gun control. and, we can respect that. here's the time. march 24th, in every single city. we're going to be marching together as students, begging for our lives. >> reporter: and you know, just like this memorial behind us, the never again organizers are hoping to send message that will not be ignored. they're asking for global support. michael? >> thank you, adrienne. and we're also learning more about the missed warning signs.

including a new video, first obtained by wplg, allegedly showing cruz in a fight at school in 2016. abc's victor oquendo is in park job -- parkland with new details. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. we're getting a much closer look at the alleged shooter. in that video, first obtained by affiliate wplg. take a look. it shows nikolas cruz in an all-out fight with classmates. that is apparently cruz in the white shirt. the big question many are asking this morning is how did he slip through the cracks when there were so many red flags? from the dozen-plus times police were called to his home, to the florida department of children investigation. after cruz filmed a video cutting himself on snapchat. the reports there said he suffered from depression and wanted to by a weapon but in the end, they found no science of neglect and ended the investigation. the fbi admitted they got a detailed warning about him before the shooting. but that information was not

passed on to the appropriate agents. he's being charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and is now being held without bond. he's invoked his right to remain silent. being held in solitary confinement and on suicide watch. michael. >> victor, is there any word on when the school will reopen? >> reporter: michael, as of right now, the school is closed through at least wednesday. officials now saying that the building where most of the carnage took place may eventually be torn down. michael? >> thank you so much, victor. in our next half hour, we'll speak to the parents who took cruz in after his mother died. that's right here only on "gma." robin. now to that deadly flu epidemic. the cdc out with a new update saying at least 84 children have died from the virus this season. it's now widespread across most states. and abc's linsey davis is here with that latest information. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that new report from the cdc says 22 children died across the country from the flu in just the last week. the most since the epidemic began in the fall. overnight, the superintendent of

schools in elizabeth, new jersey, announced a child diagnosed with influenza passed away. if confirmed by health officials, it would mark the third flu death of a child in new jersey this year. but according to the cdc, there could be hope on the horizon. the percentage of doctor visits for the flu has leveled off over the last week. the fact that that number didn't increase is seen as a hopeful sign that we could be looking at the end of the flu season. robin? >> wael take it, any hope. thank you. now to a new winter storm warning. 24 states from california to vermont facing alerts this morning for flooding, ice, and heavy snow. one town in west virginia, completely under water. rob marciano is tracking the whole thing for us. hey, rob. >> the ohio river over its banks in mason, west virginia. downtown flooded. pomeroy, ohio, the highest river level since 2004. the cold side of this, rapid city, back through cheyenne, winter storm watches.

>> it's a roller coaster of emotions. >> absolutely. >> um -- you know, it's -- still tough. we're still very -- grieving. >> feeling for the families it's affecting. >> and you opened your home to cruz for nearly three months. >> yes, sir. >> you tried to get him counseling. what was he like in your home? >> nothing that they portray on television or in the media. >> everything everybody seems to know, we didn't know. we had rules. and, um, he followed every rule to the "t." >> and before he moved into your home, how well did you know him? >> i had met him a couple of times before. he had spent the night at the house. he was very polite. he seemed normal. >> and kimberly, can you take us back to that day? was there anything unusual before that day? >> no, not at all. the only thing that was maybe different was that he didn't go to school. he usually drives him to school. he didn't go that morning.

it sometimes happens. >> he said he didn't go to school on valentine's day. >> okay. >> but when did you realize what he had done? >> um -- after the s.w.a.t. team called me. and asked where -- if i knew where my son nikolas was. i said, he's not my son. but i don't know where he's at. and at that point, i got in touch with my son who was fleeing the scene at that point. and a description came out and we put two and two together. me and my son. and we figured out what was happening. >> and what was going through your mind when this happened? did you both find out at the same time? >> no. she was home sleeping. and at that point, i was panic-stricken for her safety. i called the s.w.a.t. officer back to get the police back to my home to check on her. >> and after all this happened, at one point, you did get a chance to see nikolas. what did you say to him? did he speak back? did he say anything back? >> it was at the police station. they were going past us. and i basically, i went after

him. i really wanted to strangle him more than anything. and i just -- i mean, i wanted to say -- i tried to reserve myself. i said, really, nik? really? yelling at him. he mumbled something. but i didn't hear. he said he was sorry. >> he said he was sorry. >> but, i didn't hear that. i was furious. heartbroken. devastated. i still can't process what he's done, because this wasn't the person that we knew. not at all. >> and he was friends with your son. >> yes, sir. >> how is your son holding up? >> he's angry. he's angry. he's betrayed. he's -- you know, he's upset. >> furious. >> he was that school, too, and he had friends at that school. >> he was at school that day. nikolas texted your son. >> yes, sir. >> what were those texts like? >> he told my son he was going to the movies. and he said he had something to tell him. and my son pressed him, what is it?

what is it? and he goes, nothing bad, bro. and that was it. he said he was going to the movies. the last text my son got was, um -- yo, and that was it. that was about 2:18, i believe. >> do you have any idea why he texted your son? >> no idea. no idea. >> mr. lewis, thank you for joining us. what is the latest with the fbi investigation? >> we're cooperating. these folks opened up their house to the fbi. these folks have cooperated in every way. these are good people who are trying to do the right thing. they took this young man and got him into another school. they -- got him a job. they brought him into their home and tried to show him love. the young man, nik, indicated he was very happy in this home. and now, like they say, no good deed goes unpunished. >> are you worried about legal

repercussions with the family? >> if they get sued, if somebody tries to find fault with them, this young man, their own son. he's part of this community. these are his friends. he wants to get back to the school. they want to go back to their lives. they want people to know, because nik was at their house, they want to tell people everything that they know, including the fbi and all law enforcement. they have cooperated from day one. >> there have been so many reports about nikolas' alleged social media use about guns and killing small animals. did you know anything about that? >> no, we knew he had one instagram account. that my son had. i guess that would be the normal one. these other instagram accoun accounaccounts we had no idea about. my son had no idea about. as far as the animal killings, he didn't do anything like that at our house. we have animals. he loved our animals. our animals loved him. >> you were aware he had weapons? >> absolutely.

>> where were they kept? >> before he moved in, one of the stipulations was he had to get a gun safe. we got one on the way to move his stuff to our house. >> he didn't have free access this gun, sir? >> no, i thought i had the only key. >> and had he ever asked you beforehand to use a gun, to take it out of the safe? >> he asked twice. once, i said yes, because he wanted to clean it. and i don't know which gun he wanted to clean. i said okay. the other time he asked, i said no, it wasn't a good time. >> why did you tell him no? >> i don't know what the situation was in the house. it wasn't a good time. i don't know if we were leaving or sitting down to eat. it wasn't a good time. >> judging from any past interaction with him, it seemed like you had no problem with him having a weapon? >> no, not at all. he followed the rules. >> he followed the rules. >> he followed the rules. >> they were not allowed to be out if we were not home. if one of us wasn't home. he knew that. to our knowledge, he never had them out. as far as the animals goes, i'm

very much an animal person. there is no way i would let anybody in my house if i thought he was torturing animals at all. if we had known anything about the instagram accounts. i don't know how to use instagram. i'm old school. if we knew anything about that, he wouldn't be in our home. >> and do you have a message for the families who have lost children and -- loved ones in the tragedy? >> nothing i can say will heal them. we hurt for them. deeply. >> very much so. we were -- devastated. and, i can't imagine the pain that they must be feeling. like he said, nothing that we can say is going to be any kind of help. but -- we're very sorry that, you know, they had this experience. and -- it never should have happened. again, if we had known any of the things that we're hearing,

ship chaos. nearly two dozen members of the same family kicked off a carnival cruise after a wild brawl. with security guards. abc's gio benitez joins us now. >> reporter: robin, reports say it was near anarchy aboard this cruise ship. what may have started it all? someone stepping on someone else's flip-flop. from that moment on, a nightmare of a vacation. hardly the images you would expect from a ten-day cruise around the south pacific. what passengers say happened aboard the carnival "legend." a series of brawls. >> it took to the last night to ruin everyone's trip, ruin my honeymoon. so, you know, it was terrible. >> reporter: the man in the blue pins down the man in orange shorts. security quickly encircles the pair. starts kicking. a woman throws herself on top.

as the kicking and screaming continues. at another point, this security guard balls his fist, drawing back his arm, as he's about to punch a woman in the face before stopping at the last minute. a cruise worker then tries to swat away the camera from the person filming. according to carnival, it was a large family of about two dozen that seemed intent on provoking fights. but some passengers blaming security for failing to contain the escalating violence after repeated complaints. even children watching as the adults tussle. >> quite squared at the time. feeling quite threatened. >> reporter: police were called to meet the ship a day before it returned home. the family forced to disembark while passengers watched. carnival cruise told abc news in a statement, our security team responded in several instances to extremely unruly behavior by these guests. the actions seen on the video by our security team are not in line with our carnival values and policies. we are conducting a full

of course, we're so excited for the "roseanne" reboot. we'll see what it was like to be on that set 20 years ago. first, the students calling for major changes after the florida school shooting. back to adrienne bankert. these students are taking their cause to washington. >> reporter: that's correct. in fact, just daying after the tragedy these students are using their heart ache to fuel this movement that, as you mentioned, is going all the way to the nation's capital. they have named their campaign never again. after the shock of losing 17 lives on their campus. this tuesday, tomorrow, 100 of those students plan to meet with state lawmakers in tallahassee. they've been preparing for rallies this week in parkland, florida, and across the country next month, including a march on washington. they have titled it a march for our lives. this has affected a lot of lives. including the family who took in nikolas cruz, the suspected high school gunman into their home. michael, you spoke with them earlier today.

listen in. >> you were aware he had weapons? >> absolutely. >> where were they kept? >> we, before he moved in, one of the stipulations was he had to get a gun safe. and we got a gun safe on the way back from lantana from moving his stuff to our house. >> he didn't have free access? >> no, no, i thought i had the only key to the gun safe. >> and had he ever asked you beforehand to use a gun? take it out of the safe? >> he asked twice. once i said yes, because he wanted to clean it. i don't know which gun. he said he wanted to clean a gun. i said okay. another time he asked, i said no, it wasn't a good time. >> judging from any past interaction, it seemed you had no problem with him having a weapon. >> no, not at all. he followed the rules. >> reporter: and the center of the movement with the students is how a person like nikolas cruz, with a history of problems that have been documented with social service as well as law enforcement, was able to get his

right here in pyeongchang with writing this post after saturday's competition. i placed sixth among the best skaters in the history of the sport. i'm so have proud to do so for the u.s. my place is here. my time is now. my time is now. what did that mean? like right now? you're looking toward to future? >> i hear people saying that my time is not now. my spot light will come. but i feel like how i skated, i'm going to be up there, too. i have the motivation. the desire. i have the work ethic. i have the talent. >> reporter: oh, and did he ever have emotion, too. when he nailed that routine, i was sitting in the stands and watching him fall to his knees. and weep with joy. it was just such a beautiful moment. i have to say, after sitting down with all of the athletes, it was so great to see the pride. each and every one of them took in their performances. it was not solely about the

score they received or the medal they got or didn't get. it was about appreciating and enjoying this incredible moment that each one of them have worked so hard to achieve. for zhou and chen, they're still teenagers. i think we'll hear their names quite a bit over the next few years. >> i'm sure we are. it's amazing. every time you see those jumps and see those landings, you're doing an amazing job, as well, amy. thank you so much. we appreciate that. much more with amy coming up. plus, our winter games competition.

you know, you're always glowing. but there seems to be something different. what are you doing there? >> yeah, i must admit. i'm really into the korean skin care products that they're so famous for. so, my producers and i have had fun shopping. and, yeah, this is our personal collection. and this is what we do each night when we come home from the show. we finish around 11:00 p.m. we put the face masks on. bring out the second gift. i'm giving you all some amazing face flasks korea. i want to share with you some of the more interesting ones. this is horse fat. apparently. it makes your skin smooth. this is a salmon face mask. it brightens your face. this is bird's nest. it -- i don't want to know what this is. this is if you have had too much beer. this is if you had too much

with roles on stage and tv, including "roseanne." please welcome, laurie metcalf. an embarrassment of riches. >> it is. >> you have -- >> i know. i had this wealth of material start coming my way the past couple of years. >> you're so humble. we spoke with you that morning when the oscar nominations came out. you had just hit town for the broadway show. is it all settled in? >> i remember being emotional. greta got the to nominations for director and screenplay. that hit me. that afternoon, i was able to go to the first day of rehearsal for "three tall women" on broadway, working with glenda jackson. it was an incredible day. >> how about the oscar nominees' luncheon. >> i have always seen this.

the iconic picture. this is the lass of 2017. i never -- it never occurred to me how it had to be organized. 200 people got up on those rows. they literally call you up, one person at a time. and every single person gets recognized. what they're nominated for. there are 200. it takes about an hour. but, and at the end, you're all arranged up there. it was a great celebration. and, to recognize everybody individually like that was really special. >> as it should be. as it should be. >> yeah. >> i gotta tell you. one of my favorite films this year, "lady i wanted another day with my mother, may she rest in peace, i wanted a day with her to sarks i get it now. >> i have had mothers and daughters say, they have seen the film together. they have a miniepiphany. they're able to see each other through a different lens.

for a second. then they go back. that behavior is dug down deep. but, that's -- how -- the way that greta crafted that movie. it's magical in that way. and the characters are so compl complex. every character is three-dimensional. from saoirse's character on down to the drama teacher. they're all supporting lady bird's journey. it's a jengentle, beautiful fil. >> ets see bait of it now. >> i thought you didn't care what i think. >> i still want you to think i look good. >> okay, i'm sorry. i was telling you the truth. you want me to lie? >> no, i mean -- i just wish -- i just -- i wish that you liked me. >> of course i love you. >> but do you like me?

stories just like they were in the day. you know, they're all about the family dynamic. yes, we're in 2018. the conner family is. you wonder what they've been up to. get a sense of that, but -- it's still just comes down to the family. there's new characters. because the kids have kids. and they're in the show now. it was, um, surreal to revisit it again. because it was like no time had passed at all, even though 20 years had gone by since we had all been in the same room together. >> that's true family. sflit was. >> and you are. thank you, lawyer prip you're one of those people we just cheer on and root for. your talent is showing. i did not know that was your daughter. oh! epiphany. "lady bird" is this theaters now. coming up, the cast of the hit

we have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. and for us the expert in gas and electric is pg&e. we run about 2,500/2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg&e is responding to that call as well. and so when we show up to a fire and pg&e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. i rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. utilizing pg&e's talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on

tv, and see andi mack and see a story that they understand. they can go, oh, that's me. >> you can relate to it. it's expanding horizons. you both play mother/daughter. >> yes. >> and lilan, this show spans three generations. you want parents to watch the show with their kids? >> sometimes when i'm out and about. i'll meet kids that are fans. and after i take a picture with the kid, the mom comes and go, and i love this show. and it's so much fun because, i can tell that it has a personal impact. it's not just the show that is for children. it's not just a show for adults. it's a show that is for families. and, think you get more value about with the show where you can talk to your mom or you can talk to your brother. or another. you can tusz the show as family. >> it came from the mind of
