but it beach club he often refers to as the winter white house but today questions over security after a woman was granted unauthorized access and later found to be carrying four cell phones, a laptop, an external hard drive and a thumb drive, which authorities determined contained malicious malware. it all took place this past weekend while the president was in florida. yujing zhang presenting two chinese passports as i.d. walked right up to a secret service agent and told them she was there to go to the pool. after being checked by mar-a-lago security she was led in, even though they couldn't find her on their membership rolls. according to the complaint due to a potential language barrier issue mar-a-lago believed her to be the relative of another person named zhang who belonged to the club. a valet drove her to the reception area in a golf cart passing three more secret service agents and according to prosecutors through another secret service checkpoint. she was only stopped when a receptionist asked zhang several

times why she was there. according to the complaint, zhang finally responded that she was there for a united nations chinese-american association event later in the evening, which the receptionist knew did not exist. at that point the secret service took over. she claimed her chinese friend charles told her to travel from shanghai to attempt to speak with a member of the president's family about chinese and american foreign economic relations. now, in a statement, the secret service said it's up to mar-a-lago not them to determine who is invited and welcome on the property but just because someone's on the ground does not mean they have access to the president. kenneth, janai. >> serena marshall, thank you. now to the southern border. the secretary of homeland security says the trump administration is treating the immigration crisis like a category 5 hurricane. >> secretary kirstjen nielsen says more military resources are now heading to the area. but last night president trump stepped back from his threat to close the border. speaking to a conservative group in washington, he actually praised mexico claiming the

country is now stepping up its crackdown on migrants coming from central america. >> i really wanted to close it but now mexico is saying, no, no, no, first time in decades, we will not let anybody get through, and they've apprehended over a thousand people today at the southern border, their southern border, and they're bringing them back into their country. >> abc news has not yet found any evidence supporting the president's claim. that mexico ramped up security. meanwhile auto industry groups say if the border is shut down, car production in the u.s. would grind to a halt within a week. the president says security is more important than trade. amid all this uncertainty, new video shows the delays at the border. these tractor trailers were lined up for five miles waiting to get into el paso. and as more people wait to apply for asylum, more migrants have been seen jumping over the border fence in tijuana hoping that their arrest will speed up the process.

two more women are accusing former vice president joe biden of inappropriate behavior. that brings the total to four. they tell "the new york times" biden touched them in ways that made them feel uncomfortable. one claims biden put his hand on her thigh during an event on sexual assault. despite the allegations biden is reportedly committed to running for president. the hill website reports he plans to enter the race after easter. history overnight in chicago, former federal prosecutor lori lightfoot has been elected the next mayor. she'll be the first black woman and openly gay leader of the city. she's promising to end corruption in city hall. we turn now to that deadly case of fraternity hazing at penn university more than two years after timothy piazza died during a night of heavy drinking. a judge has handed down the first round of punishments including jail time for several ex-frat brothers. with heads hanging low, four former penn state fraternity brothers walked into a pennsylvania courtroom to face

the judge for the hazing death of timothy piazza. joseph sala, michael bonatucci, luke visser and joshua kurczewski all sentenced tuesday for piazza's 2017 death after the 19-year-old died following an alcohol fuel hazing ritual. sala charged with three counts of hazing and one count of conspiracy to commit hazing will serve three months house arrest and more than 2 1/2 years probation. bonatucci and visser could both spend up to six months behind bars while kurczewski was dealt the harshest punishment with three to nine months in jail. prosecutors say it took piazza's fraternity brothers 12 hours to call 911 after finding the 19-year-old unconscious following a night of forced drinking, which ended with piazza falling head first down a flight of stairs. >> we are committed to holding every responsible individual accountable. >> reporter: a furious legal battle followed piazza's death with the judge dismissing the most serious charges of manslaughter against five of the members. many are still facing a slew of other charges including

tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment and hazing. they are yet to be sentenced. >> they committed serious crimes and, you know, now they have to deal with it. >> reporter: overnight piazza's parents telling abc news they hope their son's case will serve as a warning to others and make students think twice before hazing anyone. the pennsylvania attorney general's office says it has obtained several guilty pleas in the case. more sentences are expected soong. new details overnight about the recent crash that forced the grounding of boeing's new 737. according to "the wall street journal," the pilots of the ethiopian airlines flight initially followed boeing's emergency procedures shutting off an anti-stall system before they turned it back on. meanwhile, a senate committee now confirms that multiple whistle-blowers have come forward to claim that safety inspectors at the faa who may have helped approve that boeing jet had insufficient training in certifications. time now for a look at your

weather for this wednesday. police in chico, california, have been warning people to stay off the roads because of flooding after these heavy rains. farther north the seattle area will see rain today while parts of idaho, utah and wyoming get snow. looking at the radar on the other side of the country, a storm system is dumping rain and snow in parts of the northeast today. sections of massachusetts and maine could see snow. just yesterday the same storm system brought a rare april snowfall to the western carolinas. coming up, the international airline passenger who had the entire plane to himself. but first two hollywood actresses head to court today in the college admissions bribery scandal. will lori loughlin or felicity huffman face prison time? and later, just how chaotic the ticket sales have become for the new "avengers"

we're back with a close call for this man on a bike just barely avoiding a crash with a deer in sacramento. he was going about 40 miles per hour. he says he clipped the deer's back hoof but didn't fall. >> thankfully. well, a man wanted for the murder of grammy nominated rapper nipsy hussle is now in a los angeles jail. 29-year-old eric holder was arrested just hours after police asked for the public's help finding him. police say the killing was not a gang fight but a personal dispute. they say the getaway driver is cooperating. the two best known defendants in the college admissions bribery scandal are due in a boston courtroom today. actresses lori loughlin and felicity huffman have not yet entered a plea.

legal experts say if the actresses work out a plea deal, they could avoid prison time. loughlin has already lost work because of the scandal, but her colleagues are rallying around her. >> it's too personal to us, and we would never want to talk about someone that's such a dear and close friend, but i think i've already said that we are family. and we stand by each other and pray for each other, and we'll always be there for each other. >> loughlin and her husband are accused of paying half a million dollars so their daughters would be recruited as college athletes. huffman is charged with paying $15,000 to improve her daughter's s.a.t. score. las vegas is now using vending machines to save lives. to fight opioid addiction, vending machines across the city will carry narcan, a nasal spray that is used to counteract overdoses. the narcan kits will be free for people in a needle exchange program. imagine flying to italy all alone.

we turn now to a new proposal to improve the safety of uber rides after the murder of a south carolina college student. >> she was killed after getting into a car she thought was her uber, and now lawmakers want to make sure something like this never happens again. >> this is nothing that you would ever want to do. you don't want to go through this. >> reporter: overnight an entire town rallying around the family of murdered college student samantha josephson. >> overwhelming to say the least. this moment is overwhelming. >> reporter: the 21-year-old's father in tears as he spoke to the crowd of mourners just five days after his daughter was killed by a man allegedly posing as an uber driver. >> he was a monster. what he did was -- i don't want anybody else to go through it as a parent. >> reporter: the suspect nathaniel rowland now facing murder charges after police say they found traces of blood and josephson's phone in his car and evidence that he used the child safety locks to trap her in the backseat.

>> i know it's my child, but if you're wrong, you're wrong. >> reporter: rowland's family speaking out for the first time since he was arrested saying while they believe he is innocent, he must pay the price if he's found guilty. >> if he did it, i would -- i'll be the first one to put him behind bars, lock him up and throw away the key, but he didn't do it. >> reporter: in the wake of the tragedy, the state where josephson was kidnapped is taking action hoping to prevent anything like this from happening again. >> this could happen anywhere, and it really exposes the dangers of ride sharing. >> reporter: lawmakers in south carolina are proposing a law that would require anyone driving for a ride share company like uber to have an illuminated light on their car displaying the company's logo. >> it mandates the illuminated light from the factory. having the lights illuminated is a step in the right direction so we can decipher who is who. >> the bill would also require drivers to give up their lights when they stop working for a ride-sharing company. the fire at a chemical plant outside houston is over but not

the controversy. the one worker was killed and two others are left in critical condition. the state is suing the plant's owner for the thick, heavy smoke that blanketed the area, and a county official says the facility should not be allowed to re-open. it's the second major chemical fire in the houston area in the last month. now to an amazing mom who pounced on a cougar that was attacking her son. 7-year-old zach bromley was playing in his yard in british columbia, canada, when a cougar attacked him. his mom says the cougar started dragging him away, so she jumped on top of the animal. >> he was on the ground, and the cougar was over him, and it was attached to his arm. i had a mom instinct, right. you just -- i just leaped on it, and i tried to pry its mouth open. i'm praying, and three sentences into me praying, it released, and it ran away. >> mom instincts for sure. zach is recovering from cuts to his head. his hooded sweatshirt may have helped protect his neck during

express my thanks to everybody enough for what's happened. >> reporter: on sunday morning ibonie stood up for a denny's employee who was being harassed by a belligerent customer. the customer punched ibonie leaving him with a broken nose, palate and teeth. these are security photos of the suspect who fled the scene after attacking ibonie. ibonie's mother, paula, wants justice for her son and the community. >> that's my plea, everybody look at this picture. this guy is dangerous. >> reporter: initially it was believed the suspect was a doordash driver. tuesday morning investigators here at fremont police said there was no evidence of that. however, last night fremont police say that doordash gave them new information about a second employee who better matched the suspect description. no arrests have been made. but as soon as we learn any new information, we'll update the story. i'm kate larsen, abc 7 news.
