four-time all-star has been out since tearing his quad in game one against the clippers. boogie has worked so hard to get back. steve kerr says he's happy for cousins to be happy for his first nba finals. he doesn't sound like kerr is going to send him out there for extended minutes. maybe we see boogie with the second unit as opposed to starting the game right off the bat. one toronto raptors player has huge bay area tynes. remember lin-sanity? the electric jeremy lin attended palo alto high school, then harvard before entering the nba with the warriors. there is one issue for lin. we've got on lin. mindy? >> the tron tore raptors with jeremy lin's eighth teams. he's had a season ending injury he has to work back from. he doesn't take an opportunity

to practice lightly when he considers everything he's been through. he realized not a lot of nba pros ever reach this level. on top of that, the warriors, the first team he's ever played with as they signed him as an undrafted free agent. he did have offers that were better but he wanted to play for his hometown team. that's why his family and friends are conflicted. >> it's cool to be home, but it's also one of those things where it's like, everyone -- all my friends and family and everybody, a lot of them have season tickets or they've grown up watching and rooting for the warriors. now it's kind of awkward because i'm just like, i don't want to talk about it or whatever. don't tell me who you're rooting for. things like that. a lot of text messages like, man, this is going to be weird for me, but we're still rooting for the raptors right now even though we're clearly warrior

fans. >> reporter: jeremy says he has family as far away as japan coming to toronto for these first two games. he played 29 games his rookie season with the warriors. he said he'll forever be grateful because that's where he learned he can play in the nba. regardry, watching steph curry and the passion steph plays with and for this game, jeremy said that really taught him what he needed to do to compete in this league and it's one of the reasons why he says his route to the nba finals after all he's been through in his ten years in the league. we'll be watching jeremy lin from afar. maybe he'll have a few good moments, but we know who we'd like to win. >> we don't want those moments to be too good. tell me about the buzz in toronto. i saw people lined up to get a spot in jurassic park to watch the game outside the arena. this is like five, six, seven, eight hours before the game

>> reporter: this is the first time this team has been to the finals. the fans are electric right now. steve kerr mentioned it reminds him of oracle, especially when they were in nba finals in 2015. he said the energy he feels in toronto is very similar to the warriors home arena energy. so, yeah, there is a definitely a buzz ooehere. after facing the cleveland cavaliers for four straight seasons to come to a team they're not as familiar with, new atmosphere, new energy, they know what they're up against. >> mindi, we'll check back with you later on as well as our pregame show at 5:00. from inside the arena to outside. we sent dion to toronto to find warriors fans. sounds like the vibe is different than what you saw last year in cleveland. >> reporter: greetings from jury ras kick park.

in cleveland we saw plenty of people rocking the blue and the yellow. as you can see, it is an entire sea of red, although i did find some warriors fans today. boy, they had some funny things to say. >> let's go raptors! >> reporter: outside the arena, fans lined up early to watch game one from nearby jurassic park. pretty soon we ran into a conundrum, not a drop of blue or yellow in site. >> reporter: where are all the warriors fans? >> too scared to come up here. >> reporter: after three lapse around the arena, at last a sighting, a golden state canadian. >> let's go. >> reporter: i told you they were nice. >> reporter: finally, a group of guys from fremont. >> reporter: where are all the warriors fans? >> we have the highest rent in all of america, so they're trying to fight poverty, they don't have passports. >> reporter: are you telling me you got your passport just so

privilege of standing outside closer to the big screen to watch the game. you talk about a fan experience. going to be thousands of them out there. if you want to talk about the game itself, interesting to see how the warriors come out after a nine-day lay-off. certainly for guys like andre iguodala and boogie cousins, that's a good thing to get rest and heal up. they may be out of sync early on. we have to see how they do with all the energy and excitement that toronto is going to come at them in their first ever nba finals game. >> a lot of good story lines. the nba will reportedly be keeping a close eye on the raptors number one celebrity fan, rapper drake. a league spokeserson tells "usa today" drake's courtside behavior has been the topic of conversation between the team and nba of firms. his antics came under fire during the eastern con friend finals when he gave the raptors coach a shoulder massage during a time-out. the warriors might have been a

little sleepy at practice. a video surfaced that apparently shows raptors fans lighting fireworks late last night in front of the st. regis hotel where the warriors are staying, not great sportsmanship. it backfired. fans on the toronto raptors had a negative response also pointing out the raptors center sergei ibaka lives there. >> we want to see your dubs spirit. post your pictures with warriors gear using #dubson7. you might see your photos on air or online. let's turn to the weather and the warmup just in time for the finals. >> spencer christian has the first look at the forecast. >> things are calm in the immediate bay area. we have thunderstorms up north in lake county, all around clear lake and over into mendocino county, near hopland and ukiah. over the sierra, a wide outbreak of thunderstorms this afternoon with numerous lightning strikes.

back here we have breezy to wins conditions at the surface. 17-mile-per-hour gusts in novato, 20 in ukiah. a lot cooler than yesterday by several degrees. i'll show you the warmup coming our way a little later. >> spencer, thanks very much. a federal investigators took the stand in the ghost ship trial saying a cause of the fire may never be determined. >> his testimony supported the defense which says the deadly fire may not be the wrongdoing of derick almena and max harris, but a case of oakland. >> reporter: just how did the ghost ship fire start? it's a question that remains unanswered to this day, more than 2 1/2 years later and one the defense wants to use to their clients' advantage. >> they failed to follow the obvious leads. >> reporter: attorneys for defendants max harris and derick almena maintain the deadly fire was intentionally set with a molotov cocktail.

atf investigator barbara maxwell testified there was no evidence of a bottle or any indicator of arson found at the scene. >> what i do know is we have a number of witnesses that atf and the city of oakland had not asked questions of that say they saw suspicions persons in that warehouse, they heard a fight, breaking glass, popping noises and saw people running from the scene. >> maxwell described a jury-rigged electrical system in the warehouse, a maze of extension cords leading to and from make hit conduits and out let's. in the end she testified investigators found where but not exactly how the fire started. in oakland, laura anthony, absolutely 7 news. for the first time we're seeing what happened when law enforcement caught up with a carjacking suspect at a shopping center in concord back in 2014. abc 7 news i-team reporter dan noyes has the video you'll see only on abc 7.

>> abc 7 news i-team received video of a deadly law enforcement shooting in the east bay. the video from 2014 shows a car surrounded by two law enforcement vehicles. three officers are standing nearby with guns drawn. the car backs up, hitting one vehicle, then starts to move forward when several shots are fired. the car stops moving. 26-year-old jose avalos was later pronounced dead. deputies say they were chasing a stolen car. the driver traveled through concord into the parking garage area of the sun valley mall, then jumped out and ran across interstate 680 into the willow shopping center where he tried to car jack several vehicles. he succeeded into getting in one car and then was confronted by officers. witnesses who were locked down in several stores say they heard about six gunshots. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. in oakland a man was taken to the hospital after he tried

to stop a woman from stealing his car. witnesses say the woman walked out of the alameda county superior courthouse and took the victim's car. he got on the roof to try to stop her from getting away. he was thrown off the car. the suspect crashed the car and then took off on foot. in berkeley, police are searching for a stolen amazon van. the driver was making a delivery around 11:00 a.m. when someone drove off in the white dodge van last seen heading south on shaddock. police haven't release add suspect description or how many suspects may have been involved. new information in the case of a man accused of deliberately plowing into pedestrians. later, turning off the power. the plan to prevent more wildfires by turning off power across the state. the effect right here in the bay area. a real life robo co

in the south bay the man accused of intentionally running down eight people is now facing hate crime charges. >> prosecutors believe isaiah peoples targeted some of the people in the crosswalk because he thought they were muslim. >> c limb joins us live from the courthouse. this afternoon the district attorney's office added two new hate crime charges on top of the eight account tempted murder charges: this horrific crash in sunnyvale is being called a hate crime. >> i pray for the strength that we will need to hold this

perpetrator accountable. >> reporter: district attorney %-p this afternoon following the third court appearance of isaiah peoples. investigators believe the army veteran was on his way to a bible study when he plowed his toyota corolla into a crowd injuring eight people. prosecutors say peoples targeted two of the people, an indian hindu man and 13-year-old daughter because he thought they were muslim. >> we feel confident that a substantial motivating factor was the perceived religion. >> reporter: the sunnyvale department of public safety believes the crash was intentional based on the lack of skid marks at the scene. the girl remains on life support. >> this is something that affects all of us. if it's not one of us today, it could be one of us tomorrow. >> reporter: the managing director of the hindu-american foundation says there's been an uptick in these types of perceived religion cases in the

post 9/11 era. >> it's important we come together, put aside any differences we have and try our best to build bridges, educate others. >> reporter: relatives spoke with us on camera saying peoples comes from a mixed race family with multiple religions represented. they believe he suffers from ptsd as a result of his military service and continues to pray daily while in custody. peoples did not enter a plea today. he will return to court in mid july. if convicted, e faces life in prison. live in san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. organizations that serve victims of human trafficking, sexual assault, domestic violence and other violent crimes received much-needed funding today. san francisco district attorney george gas cone presented $750,000 to five organizations, they include the ucsf trauma

recovery center, third street clinic, safe house, mujeres unidas. someone took to the sky today to send a message attending facebook's shareholders meeting. toeing a sign saying break up facebook and save silicon valley. we don't know who paid for the sign. according to online text site mashable, a non-profit called fight for the future projected an image on the palo alto hotel holding the meeting saying, quote, fire mark zuckerberg. a silicon valley company is trying its hand at making a real robo cop. smi international of menlo park showed off a prototype of a row mott designed to go between an officer and driver during a traffic stop. engineer rubin brewer came up with the idea after reports of

ukiah had showers earlier. very active weather to our north. here in the main part -- in the immediate san francisco bay area, things are calm. lingering clouds over the bay. currently 55 degrees in san francisco, 62 in oakland. upper 60s in mountain view and san jose. 74 at morgan hill. 54 at half moon bay. you can see incoming clouds from the coast over the bay and lots of neighborhoods in san francisco. 71 in santa rosa. 74 fairfield, 78 in vacaville. concord 73 and livermore 68. the view from our rooftop looking over the embarcadero, low clouds returning to the coast and bay tonight. warming trend begins tomorrow. it will continue through the weekend into early next week at which point we might see high temperatures inland in the 90s. right now looking at our forecast animation taking us into the light night and overnight hours. notice the expansion of low clouds and fog, pushing locally

over the bay and even into some inland neighborhoods. 5:00 tomorrow morning as the morning commute begins, some areas will experience reduced visibility. so your commute might be a little slow. skies will be mainly sunny except along the coast where low clouds will linger. let's move along and take a look at overnight conditions with the low clouds moving across the bay. overnight lows still mild, generally in the low to mid 50s. tomorrow we'll see sunny skies in the south bay with high temperatures in the low 80s and san jose and morgan hill. on the peninsula, highs in the mid to upper 70s, low to mid 60s on the coast. downtown san francisco topping out at 68. in the north bay highs of 77 in novato. east bay highs 76, oakland and 73 at fremont. inland eastbound will have highs in the mid 80s.

strike has entered its eighth day today. negotiations began at 11:00 a.m., ten hours after talks ended around 1:00 in the morning. the union had been seeking a 10% raise over two years. now it's asking for 7%. the new haven unified school district offered a 3% one-time bonus and 4% salary increase over the next two years. the strike is now longer than oakland's teachers strike earlier this year. one bay area speller remains among the 16 finalists at the strips national spelling bee, speller number five is from san jose. he's 13 years old and is in the seventh grade at sheboya middle school. he finished in 25th place last year. he seems unstoppable or uninvincible. >> i-n-v-i-n-c-i-b-l-e. invisible. >> correct.

here are the stories making headlines at 4:30. the warriors are 90 minutes away from tip-off in game one of the nba finals, taking on the raptors in toronto. even though the team is away, oracle will be packed with fans for a watch party. investigators in texas are trying to track down these men caught on camera dressed as law enforcement. abc world news reports the men announced themselves as dea as they banged on the door. they took off when the homeowner said they were calling police. a fire investigators took the stand today in the ghost ship fire. investigators say the cause of the fire was never determined,

but there was no evidence of arson or a molotov cocktail. the defense says even the lack of an official cause leaves open those possibilities. today pg&e made its case for a possible blackout this summer. it's made changes that would prevent fire danger but could lead to more people losing power. wayne freedman explains. >> this is another symptom of what california has come to call the new normal. we know high vol tan transmission lines caused the paradise fire last year today pg&e received the ability to turn those heavy lines off. the tradeoff for more safety, that more people may lose power as a result, perhaps even in a place like san francisco. the basic necessities we take for granted like electricity, not so fast this fire season. perhaps even in san francisco. >> how long could you go without electric power without being put out? >> a day would be too much. >> well, it would be dark in there and we wouldn't be able to

run up sales. >> without power, my friends, some of them would die. >> reporter: that is one reason why ali attended the meeting. it approved new deenergization guidelines from pg&e in cases of extreme fire danger. they have the option to cut power to vie voltage transmission lines, not just the smaller ones used for distribution. the disabled, like ali have expressed concerns about how such measures might leave them vulnerable. >> power for c pap machines, ventilators, wheelchairs, refrigerators for folks who need medications at certain temperatures. the list goes on. >> reporter: pg&e says the odds remain fall of such a cutoff impacting san francisco or san jose, but in rural areas with a high fire danger -- >> no, i'm not happy. >> reporter: when pg&e cut power to napa sonoma and lake counties

in october, more than 11,000 people went dark. their frustrations continued when the utility took two more days to restore the power. cutting high power transmission lines could impact more people this year in the east and the north bays. prepare now says pg&e. >> it's totally dependent upon weather. it's really difficult to predict or give odds on something like that because we do not know what the weather is going to be like in mid august. >> pg&e stressed today it would not take such a shutdown lightly. it would look at weather, temperature and winds and other factors. pg&e says they would hope to restore power within 48 hours. as with before, they would need to check every line before flipping those switches. in the news room, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> crews are already hitting the hillsides in contra costa county trying to get a jump on fire season. the county's fire protection district is encouraging home and property owners to cut weeds and grasses back to a height of

three inches or less. they say the late rains almost guarantee a high fire season with plenty of fuel. >> everybody knows we've had pretty tough fire seasons for the last two years. we anticipate fuel levels, taller, denser fuels will contribute to an even more dangerous fire season this year and one that's going to make for fires that are more difficult to fight because of the density of those fuels. >> fire officials are also requiring owners of larger parcels to create fire breaks between 15 and 30 feet, depending on the property. they say the fire breaks are also a good idea for all homeowners. a berkeley woman who reached the top of mt. everest has a message for all those who dream at an attempt at the summit. no beginners, only serious climbers she says. the record number of deaths has nep nepalese officials rethinking the system. >> describe this moment to me. >> it's a really surreal

feeling. it's an amazing feeling. the sun was out and we were alone on the summit. >> reporter: roxanne vogel is a serious climber, one peak away from becoming the seven summit club, the ultimate badge of honor for climbers who have reached the tallest peak on each climate. she slimed on the tibet side where there were no lines and ter mitts were limited. she said that's how it should be. >> just the freedom of being in the mountans alone is a feeling unlike anything else. i wish everybody who climbed everest could feel that. i can't imagine of being stuck in the line and waiting to get to the top to take a picture. >> reporter: this is a picture from mt. everest on the nepal size. it went viral causing nepalese officials to rethink their rules. 11 deaths already this month. in nepal, anyone can get a permit, no experience required to attempt the 29,000 foot
