on the u.s. economy. this morning, there is a growing confrontation on tariffs between president trump and his own party. >> well, there is not much support in my conference for tariffs, that's for sure. >> reporter: the president is promising to slap a 5% tariff on all mexican goods starting monday unless he's satisfied with mexico's attempts to stem the flow of migrants crossing the border. the tariff could rise to 25% in the coming months. top republicans are now warning the trump administration not to move forward with the plan fearing the impact on american consumers. >> if we go to a 25% tariff, that's a whole different story. it could hurt our economy badly. >> republican lawmakers are now suggesting they may have a very vetoproof majority to stop the president. during his trip to london, the president said the effort to block the tariffs by republicans would be, quote, foolish. >> there's nothing more important than borders. i've had tremendous republican support.

i have a 90% -- 94% approval rating as of this morning in the republican party. that's an all-time record. can you believe that? isn't that something? i love records. >> reporter: the tariffs would increase the cost of consumer products from mexico, items from washing machines to produce like avocados. chipotle says it could cost the company $15 million a year, likely forcing it to raise menu prices. one economist says the tariffs could amount to one of the largest tax increases in decades. >> this 5% tariff will on top of the other tariffs that the president has either enacted or threatened add up to be one of the largest tax increases in the last 30 years. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi now suggesting congress should act first to prevent tariffs from taking effect. >> the taxes i don't think would make sense, so i would think they will stand. >> reporter: senate minority leader chuck schumer predicts the president won't go through with his threat. >> i believe that he will back

off when faced with the opposition among business, among his own republicans, and when he sees what a dumb move he has made. >> reporter: but overnight the president firing back on twitter calling schumer a creep and saying the senator would rather have our country fail with drugs and immigration than give republicans a win. but he gave mexico bad advice, no bluff. the statement coming as the so-called republican revolt gains steam. >> the president of the united states is a very smart man. been known to play with fire but not live hand grenades. >> and high-level talks with mexican officials are expected today in washington. meanwhile, the federal reserve has indicated it may cut interest rates if any trade disputes slow down the economy. the trump administration has announced new restrictions for americans traveling to cuba including a ban on cruise ships. the new rules effective today also apply to group tours and most private planes and boats. national security adviser john

bolton says they're ending what he calls veiled tourism by cutting off the cuban government's access to american dollars. this morning, president trump is wrapping up his three-day state visit to the uk by marking the 75th anniversary of d-day. he'll attend ceremonies with queen elizabeth and more than a dozen other world leaders. it follows a day that was packed with pageantry and some protests. abc's serena marshall has more on what's ahead today. serena, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning. and the president's trip to london wasn't without some controversy but also had a lot of pomp and circumstance, but today is all about commemorating. as president trump prepares to depart london -- >> it's the greatest alliance the world has ever known. >> reporter: -- that special relationship between the two countries on full display dialing back past criticism while not shying away from british politics and brexit. >> i would have soon settled maybe. perhaps you won't be given the credit that you deserve.

[ chanting "no kkk, no fascist usa" ] >> reporter: that 20-foot-tall diaper clad trump baby blimp flying but the president overnight on twitter writing, i kept hearing that there would be massive rallies against me in the uk, but it was quite the opposite. the big crowds were those that gathered in support of the usa and me. but today politics is second, and the agenda focused on commemorating the d-day invasion with world leaders. abc's david muir hearing the stories from that day 75 years ago. >> people say, how did you get off that boat and go in on the beach? there was a job had to be done. somebody had to do it. we did it. >> reporter: more than 300 veterans plan to be at today's ceremony marking the june 6th operation that took allied troops across the english channel to the beaches in german

occupied france. the president heads to those beaches in normandy tomorrow. but first at today's event he will be meeting with veterans of d-day, and later he'll be heading to ireland. janai, zachary. >> serena marshall in washington, thank you. now to a major medical headline. researchers who conducted a new study on white and red meat say even they are surprised by the results. they found white meats like chicken and turkey are just as bad as red meat when it comes down to your cholesterol levels. nutritionists point out that red meat is still higher in saturated fat, but they also suggest cutting back on both and eating more plant-based proteins. as always they say a well-balanced diet with everything in moderation is best. the heartland is bracing for more rain with major rivers already approaching record e ter is sixeet deep in some areas. and on the other side of the state, the mississippi river is now at the second highest level on record, and it hasn't crested yet. meanwhile, in arkansas the

we're back with a direct hit in connecticut. an electric glider plane crashed through the roof of this house. look at that. the pilot apparently lost power trying to make an emergency landing. only minor injuries were reported. a mountain rescue in arizona nearly spun out of control. chopper crews were hoisting a 74-year-old woman to safety when that red basket you see carrying her began spinning. that lasted for about 40 seconds. rescuers say she is okay other than suffering some dizziness and nausea, but they say this problem is pretty rare. >> sometimes when we bring the

helicopter up from the ground, it will start to spin, so we have a line attached to the basket to help prevent that. today it didn't. >> they tried to stop some of the spin with the line that paul was referring to, but that didn't work, and it actually eventually broke, so once we got the forward flight, the spin got quite a bit less to the point where they were safely able to bring the patient up to the aircraft. >> they say the last time something like this happened was three years ago. los angeles is struggling to address a growing crisis on the streets. the homeless population rose by 16% in the last year. despite the city spending millions of dollars on the problem, officials blame higher rents and the tight housing market on that climb. beverly hills just became the first american city to end nearly all tobacco sales. the city council voted to ban the sale of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products starting in 2021. hotels and cigar lounges will be the only places exempt from the

terrifying hit-and-run. an officer in south florida was nearly run over during a traffic stop. thankfully he is okay, but police are searching for the driver of that white car you see. and now to that major development in the parkland, florida, school massacre. the former deputy who critics called the coward of broward county has been arrested on criminal charges. >> officer scot peterson was seen outside doing nothing while 17 people were killed in that school. abc's andrea fujii has the story. >> reporter: 17 children and staff were killed at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida, last year when a gunman stormed the school and now the man who was the school resource officer at the time has been arrested for not confronting the shooter. the florida state attorney says former broward sheriff's deputy scot peterson was fired and now faces 11 criminal charges in connection with his lack of response to the situation. investigators say peterson refused to investigate the

source of the gunshots, retreated during the active shooting and directed other law enforcement who arrived to stay 500 feet away from the building. in an nbc interview last year, peterson questioned his actions. >> i mean, knowing what i know today, i would have been in that building in a heartbeat. >> reporter: peterson's arrest comes after a 15-month investigation into the actions of law enforcement following the shooting. another deputy was also fired for his inaction. peterson's charges include child neglect and culpable negligence. if convicted, he faces nearly 100 years in prison. in new york, andrea fujii. zachary and janai, back to you. >> peterson's lawyer says his client has been made a scapegoat and he argues by definition peterson cannot be prosecuted for child neglect because he was a law enforcement officer, not a parent or caregiver. now to the growing mystery in the caribbean where three americans have died within days of each other at a luxury resort.

41-year-old miranda schaupp-werner passed away on may 25th at a hotel in the dominican republic after having a drink from the mini bar in her room. five days later at the same resort edward holmes and cynthia ann day were found dead. officials say all three died of respiratory failure and there were no signs of foul play. the state department says right now it is not aware of any connection between the three deaths. the resort says it followed the proper protocol in each case. another mystery surrounds the death of an american husband and wife on a dream vacation in the south pacific. david and michelle paul traveled to fiji and then suffered from an unknown illness. they died within days of each other. davis told relatives both got medical treatment and were released by doctors, and now their family is demanding answers. >> he had messaged my mom on facebook on sunday morning saying i'm okay, and so we were hoping to see him within the next few days, and the next we heard, he was back in the hospital with shortness of

breath, and then that was the last time we actually talked to him. >> health officials say a small number of people who came in close contact with the couple in fiji are being monitored as a precaution. they say the cause of death is still unknown, but the flu has been ruled out. now to a pricey fender bender for comedian tracy morgan. he was involved in a minor accident in manhattan while driving his brand-new bugatti. he was seen here banging on the other driver's honda angrily shouting, $2 million car, just bought it. the driver says she didn't know who morgan was until people started taking pictures. a dog trapped for three weeks in a cave near tampa is back home with its owner. a hiker heard sally wimpering but couldn't get to her, so he posted a plea for help on social media, and that prompted people from around florida to join him including a stage rigging company. they were finally able to get sally out of the 20-foot hole and sally is now doing okay.

chp ran a traffic break. traffic was heavy for about 20 minutes or so. it does look like they have cleared the vehicle and everything is looking all right at the moment. if you're continuing on to the bay bridge toll plaza, everything wide open here. don't even have a stackup in the cash lanes and no metering lights yet. that should happen closer to 5:20. big changes at sfo. if you catch uber or lyft you're gong to have to walk to meet your driver. >> curbside pickup will no longer be allowed. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan is live with where we have to go now. anser? >> reporter: good morning, guys. there are so many options for passengers at sfo. this could be confusing. the new rules apply to people who use uber and lyft but only passengers arriving on domestic flights. right now we're in terminal three for united. you can see signs like this one directing people to the new pickup spots. let's show you a map of what this looks like. sfo has several parking garages. the new pickup spots are in the
