[applause] it's a cute little movie, i guess it's for kids they're going to do some some state-of-the-art animal stuff. >> tamron: us use your first animation? >> i've never used it for a movie for disney so this will be the first for me. i'm going to start doing that stuff more. >> tamron: and you have this collaboration with ariana grande because i love it i love ariana grande but of course when you put some chaka khan in the mix, that is a hit. >> "charlie's angels" movie. she wanted me to come in and sing with her on this track. i chakra.: how does one >> they can call me. i don't answer the phone.

i have agents and so she called him a agents in my agent said are you interested in singing with ariana grande? i said it depends. i am only kidding, i said of course. we went into the studio in l.a. and put on the vocals and did a nice song. they're also going to feature i think hello happiness is in the movie as well. >> tamron: that's your 14th album of my count? >> who's counting? no idea. >> tamron: when he looked back at a first ball all the leg over there, hello happiness. what does that capture for your life right now? we said you were 60 the audience said what and you look like 20. where are you in your journey right now? >> hello happiness is not my

theme song. to speed on what is your theme song? >> my themes i would be more realistic. happiness is cool and we have it but right now i think that we are at a very serious turning point as far as our spiritual lives are concerned. i think i am here to bear witness and to give what i see and to be of service of service. >> tamron: you've been of service to us, especially women, you walked up that every song every woman you've give us all that we need every time you go out and i hear that song women come i don't care what backgroundhey t had to grow into that. >> tamron: really? >> old girl when i first did come i think it was 82 or 81 or something like that i said how dare i sink words like i am

every woman, i am not every woman. i took it literally. you know? it wasn't too long ago actually when i started feeling comfortable singing the song because i felt this isn't about me it's about us. [applause] >> tamron: obviously people have always been intrigued by your life, you have your first great grandson, that right? >> tamron: yes. two weeks ago. >> tamron: what is that like? >> sobering. >> tamron: in what way? >> here's the deal. i'm not going to see grandchild. but this is my first granddaughter, she is 27 her name is raven.

she is a really special girl and she lives in atlanta. she's doing great things, she works with my foundation with me. i also had a production company named after her. she's really smart and a great achiever. >> tamron: how could she be great anything else with you in her lifeal got custody of her granddaughter when she was ten, custody of her grandchild? >> i had joint custody with her mother. she is now, who she is going to hate that picture. you'll have to check with me on that. >> tamron: i bring that up because much of who you are as a woman, especially your autobiography all of these women around you we talk about it takes a village to raise children it was my aunts that were there for my mother, my

mother now come on moses' grandma comeau was there. that's a much of your backgrou background. >> it's the woman thing. in the black community, this is the jewish community and every community it is the women that are the glue of the whole family unit. [applause] >> tamron: i mld youha you are d >> my great grandmother. >> tamron: what did she say to you? >> she started her own church, ch. she was a real -- >> tamron: mystical person. >> she read my palm when i was like maybe nine, eight or nine. she said one day any people are going to know your name. i was like okay and i ran off, i kept playing and ran off.

>> tamron: when you have something like that, relative that's as you are destined for greatness, how do you then live into that? you want the kid the people bet on, you are not the person the person will who would turn at the legendary c khan ih. >> tamron: you are a rebel? >> i was a rebel. [applause] >> tamron: you still are a rebel. how did you turn that rebellious spirits and to where you are? >> the thing was i knew there was something in me, i'm sure you've had it, there was something in you and your core that you couldn't identify at the time that said oh, no. i kind of know what road to take. do you hear what i'm saying?

i know this isn't it, that's not at come of this is for me, that's not for me. i ran away from home at 16. my mother was pregnant and we were both aries and we were going through some stuff. >> tamron: you said i'm out. >> i just ran away. i did tell a chosen my mother was very supportive when i was in singing groups and has goals and stuff and she'd go as a chaperone to make all of our clothes and stuff like that. just a great mother. we just bumped heads, when i was a teenager. i ran away with my dog, my dog mimi and i. it sounds like some crazy stupid movie. i found my dad, i hadn't seen my dad in eight years and i lived with him and i went back to high school for a minute and that's what i became a black panther. >> tamron: you've been so open as it said in the book you were

recently honored at the variety power of woman luncheon it was jennifer aniston, mariah carey, when you look at how women are treated in the music business now versus when you started out as their big difference now? >> yes, i was watching a holiday story with diana ross in it the other night. mickey howard and i were watching it and when people have asked me to sing the song strange truth but i couldn't sing that song it would tear me apart. can you imagine being on the tour bus and having fun with all the guys in the bus going to the next gig in the next stuff you pass a tree with men hanging from it. that would wipe me out, i wouldn't be the same. these are people who were really the trail blazers for us and they had to walk into the

kitchen. [applause] front door, or the at entrance data walk through the kitchen. >> tamron: diane carol, the role like julia until diane carol came around. [applause] i feel like ain't [applause] that is a fun song. >> tamron: when you first burst onto the scene leading the band is this woman, this kid, how did you juggle that responsibility quits like every coming at you. >> when i first started i was like 17. and i was in chicago and we had to fly out to l.a. to do show where a lot of agents would be there. it was like the whiskey billboard or something like that. the sky was in the audience from abc records and he sawy. that never happens.

i was to chicago while we got all the signing of the contracts going and everything and i got pregnant. we didn't sign the contract actually until i was 20 because i wanted to be of age and my mother was going to have to sign for me if i wasn't so. i'm not going to tell that story, you have to read the bo book. >> tamron: let me talk to you about the fashion, how did you create the look? how did you create the hair, the everything? >> my first costumes like the video performance all those outfits my mother and i made. [applause] >> tamron: really? >> yes. my mother is a great seamstress and my sister and i were almost 23 years. >> and you see

[applause] >> tamron: you've had many iconic hairstyles over the years, how do you created? >> child i just started caring about the stuff. >> be true possible.

>> i did my own makeup, i did my own hair, i think the code was mother. >> i don't even know when that was, must of been in the early 80s early 80s. >> tamron: what inspires her hair? >> i came here with a head full of crazy as hair. my hair was like a reddish brown is red it was fine hair but water came to it it would prove dumb like proof spewing your hair became an iconic thing. when they wear their hair they would be like i've got chaka khan hair. >> i wasn't think about it. spew when you started this week line, in fact two of our audience members, our stage

this is generally my luck, i change my hair and my makeup depending but this is what i look like normally.
