temperatures go back into the 60's, not quite as warm as we were yesterday. the cooling trend starts to begin later today. over the weekend, we will go below average with a chance of showers. kumasi: happening today, ther are multiple vigils to be held to honor shooting victims, including in half moon bay, where seven people were killed. lena howland joining us with a look at how the community is grieving. lena: here outside of the growing memorial off of main street in half moon bay is where the community will gather this evening at 5:00 in honor of the seven people killed on monday for a candlelight vigil. we saw the first of likely several vigils happened last night, this one in san francisco's portsmouth square, where dozens gathered to remember the victims killed in half moon bay and in monterey park. it got so full of people hoping

to show their support that they ran out of candles. one of the vigil's organizers with the delta chinatown initiative says the shootings, which are extremely rare in the asian community, have shaken it to its core and come at a time of heightened anxiety. >> the trauma in our community has been, i think has come to a boiling point for some of these individuals. we have been through years of anti-asian hate, senseless violence. >> from our friends and families and communities, only when we become vulnerable and start to share how we feel, how i feel internally and what kind of help i need, then other people and know how to give me the help that i needed. lena: others at the these gatherings can be a chance to discuss difficult subjects like trauma and mental health that organizers say are often taboo in the aapi community but for many, the grieving process

has only just begun. ahead of tonight's vigil at 5:00 here at the memorial in half moon bay, we are told that the archbishop will also be going out to both farms impacted by these shootings to do both a blessing and a prayer. live in half moon bay, lena howland, abc7 news. reggie: we've learned california terra gardens was the sight of another shooting in july. the san mateo district attorney says the suspect and victim in that case were both managers at the half moon bay farm. they lived in trailers and had ongoing work related tensions between them. the victim was in his home when he heard the suspect at his front door threatening to kill him and his family. the suspect fired a gun through the glass door. deputies arrested the suspect. they say he smelled like alcohol and denied shooting. that july shooting on the most recent mass shooting involved different people, different

circumstances. what they had in common was possible tension between employees at the farm. though unofficial motive in the most recent shooting has not been given, investigators say the suspect was allegedly taunted with an offensive nickname that may have fueled his anger. kumasi: deplorable is how a san mateo supervisor described the conditions some were living in at the mash room -- mushroom farm in half moon bay. california terra garden owned the mushroom farm since 2022 and says state impacted -- inspected the mobile homes. eight families lived on the property. supervisor ray moeller inspected that farm yesterday. he confirmed the county will have to read tag every unit. >> horrible. horrific. deplorable conditions. we saw basically what looked like sheds, storage containers that people were living in, no insulation, no running water.

thing to see an assault on my husband's life. reggie: paul pelosi's skull was fractured in october when he was hit by a hammer by an intruder who broke into the family' house in san franciscos. nancy pelosi was the target. nancy says her husband has at least three more months of recovery ahead. he has been in public recently, including some high-profile events like this one at the white house during the war years' championship -- the warriors' championship celebration. you see him talking with draymond green. kumasi: cities across the nation are bracing for protest as the country prepares for the release of what is expected to be a graphic video showing the beating and arrest of tyre nichols. five former memphis police officers have been arrested and charged with murder. overnight, four of them were released schools in memphis have

been canceled today. nichols' family says it shows officers tyre greeting -- beating minutes. his mother said she is not going to watch the video but knows that it is horrific. she is calling for peaceful protest. >> i don't want us burning up the city, tearing up the streets because that's not what tyre stood for. if you guys are here for me and tyre, then you will protest peacefully. >> the five officers arrested for beating tyre nichols during a traffic stop earlier this month are facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder. nichols died at the hospital three days after the attack. the officers have all been fired. attorneys for at least two of them say their clients intend to plead not guilty. reggie: so much disturbing video

releasing today. thank you. there are growing calls for oaklands police chief be reinstated immediately. chief lamar armstrong was put on administrative leave after a report raised questions about his handling of misconduct cases. monito oment has created this drama to extend monitoring that was supposed to and later this year. during the police commission last night, the members did not publicly address the situation, they went to closed session for over two hours. however, the public had plenty to say. >> for years, we wanted to have a black police chief and now we got him and people are going to -- people are trying to throw him under the bus. >> and i am just calling to support chief armstrong because he has made a huge difference. reggie: the commission scheduled a special session for next thursday. kumasi: there are serious concerns about the future of barks. the agency's board is sounding the alarm, saying if more money

petaluma down to a quarter mile visibility, san carlos down to a mile. most of us are doing ok. high-pressure that's been in control for much of the week supplying that sunshine is now smoothing off to the north. we are watching a weak report of energy beginning to move into the lower 48, some showers in the pacific northwest. this cold front is going to swing through on sunday. not a lot of moisture associated with it and a light sprinkle at best is what we are looking at. temperatures in the 40's by 9:00 a.m. around lunchtime, you will notice high clouds moving in. it's a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the upper 50's to lower 60's. we are dry today, no threat of a shower. we will find that chance of a shower over the weekend. the weekend, we see cooler weather. on sunday, there is chance of some wet weather. we are going to show you that cold front moving through coming up, plus check in with jobina and see how we are doing with traffic. jobina: we do have an issue and

reggie: hundreds of people forced from their apartment building in oakland due to flooding on new year's day are still not allowed to go home. many remain in hotels or with friends and family. during yesterday's bart board of directors meeting, many residents called in pleading for help from the agency. the apartment building, the coliseum connections complex, sits on bart property. many asked when they will be able to return home. kumasi: next week, we are expected to learn when the oakland zoo is expected to reopen. it was closed on new year's day when a sinkhole opened up on the main road to the zoo. reggie: sonoma county is expected to reopen the job or dodo trail after it was closed to clear in encampment and remove health hazards. it is it -- it connects downtown center is and sebastopol. this is video from the summer.

m partners at the press democrat say multiple nonprofits and agencies helped move nearly 30 homeless people to shelter on tuesday. governor newsom's care program is being challenged in the state supreme court. multiple groups filed a lawsuit arguing that people with disabilities should make their own decisions about treatment. care core allows family health care workers with law enforcement to refer a person with severe mental illness for treatment. the county would then decide whether or not they will undergo mandatory care. the program, which was created to combat homelessness, begins in october. kumasi: we are getting our first look at that pricey toilet that will be installed in san francisco the summer. two companies, including one called public restroom company, are donating this modular restroom. the project was supposed to cost $1.7 million but the donation is bragging that cost down significantly.

the recreation and park department still has to dish out $300,000 for other costs like landscaping design, permits and environmental reviews, with the leftover money from the state grant, san francisco's planning to add other bathrooms, including one at reseda park and bernal heights. >> it's really nice to have a bathroom here where a bunch of senior citizens hang out here on thursdays and have a little chat group. >> you got to go, right? >> we got to go. kumasi: public restroom company is not allowed to sell the bathroom because the company is locate di nevadan. san francisco, even though they cannot do business with this company, they can receive this as a gift. reggie: all this for a toilet. drew: our people in know we valley like, we really need -- noe valley like, we really need a toilet outside?

adam schiff is running for u.s. senate in 2024. he will be seeking dianne feinstein's seat. feinstein has yet to announce if she will seek reelection. san francisco-based reddit is letting employees go. data science, software engineering, community management and other departments have been impacted by layoffs. it's not clear how money people were affected by the announcement. reddit has offices in san francisco, chicago, new york and los angeles. reggie: a new law passed last month is supposed to make it easier to help people build retirement accounts. it raises the age when retirement account holders have to start taking money out of their accounts. the age for mandatory distributions rose from 72 years old to 73 years old, giving people's money more time to grow. another change starts next year. employers will be allowed to contribute to retirement accounts of employees who are making student loan payments, even if those employees cannot contribute any money themselves.

from santa rosa to petaluma. a little fog on the coast but elsewhere, we are doing just fine. partly cloudy skies this morning on the airport camera. here's how the deschutes up. temperatures will be in the upper 50's, lower 60's. not nearly as warm as we were yesterday and over the weekend, much cooler weather will move in and so will a chance of some showers. >> what was your reaction when you first saw the video? >> in my 36 years, would have to say i don't think i've ever been more horrified and disgusted, you know, and to some degree, confused. reggie: that was memphis police chief cj davis speaking in an interview this morning about police video showing the beating of tyre nichols. he was beaten and later died at

the hospital after a traffic stop earlier this month. the chief says the stop itself is questionable. chief davis said she was not able to verify any reckless driving while combing through surveillance video on the day he was arrested. video of the beating himself -- itself is set to be released later today. cities across the nation are bracing for protests, including in the bay area. a justice for tyre nichols protest is already planned for 5:00 p.m. in san francisco. murder charges have been filed against the former officers. jobina: all five former officers have been charged with second-degree murder in the state of tennessee. second-degree murder is defined as a knowing kyl. it is also -- knowing kill. it's also considered a class a felony. four of those officers have been released from jail. the other charges they all face are aggravated assault, two charges of aggravated kidnapping, two charges of official misconduct and one

charge of official oppression. the attorney for tyre nichols' family watched in the body camera footage and describes what he saw. >> it was an mma fight, except there was only one side that was mma. you know, tyre was helpless, he was defenseless, he was restrained, and that's why you are seeing the types of charges that you are seeing here. jobina: another attorney for the family, ben crump, said the video will remind the country of the rodney king case in 1991. that case lead to unrest and rights in the streets of los angeles for days. a vigil held for tyre nichols last night. his mother and the rest of the family urged people to protest peacefully today. kumasi: thanks. the community of half moon bay will hold a public vigil on main street across from city hall. prior to the gathering, san francisco archbishop salvatore corleone he will be visiting the two shooting sets for a prayer and a blessing.

traumatized, are in shock, they have been displaced from their homes. reggie: we still do not know much about the chinese farmworkers, including how long they have been at that farm, or where their families live. we are learning more details about the living conditions farmers were under at the california terra farm in half moon bay. lena san mateo county supervisor ray mueller says the living conditions at one of the farms where the shooting happened were in his words both deplorable and heartbreaking, adding that he wants to raise the quality of life for farmworkers now. sky 7 video shows the living conditions at the mushroom farm off-highway 92 looked grim with multiple trailers and mobile homes in a makeshift community. close, the supervisor said it is much worse. he inspected the farm yesterday

adult. it labels the gun as a small piece of american freedom. lawmakers filed a similar claim with the ftc last year but they say they did not hear back. reggie: los angeles congressman adam schiff has made it official, he is running for u.s. senate in 2034. he will be seeking the seat dianne feinstein has held since 1993. the 62-year-old says he spoke with feinstein yesterday, letting her know his plans. adam: she was perfectly comfortable with my making the announcement and i want to show her the respect that she has earned. she's been a great colleague. reggie: feinstein, who is 89, has yet to announce whether she plans to run again, telling us earlier this week she will make a decision in a couple of months. adam schiff joins orange county congress member katie porter, who announced her intention to run two weeks ago and oakland's congresswoman barbara lee appears poised to run as well. disney celebrating its 100th birthday this year. kumasi: disneyland is

presidents getting back to ronald reagan. this comes after mike pence revealed he recently found classified documents at his home. former president trump brought hundreds of classified documents to mar-a-lago and resistant hundred them over. the fbi search president biden's home after documents were found in his garage. a spokesperson for george w. bush says they remain confident that no such materials are in their position. barack obama's office suggests pacified records were submitted to the national archives upon leaving office. bill clinton's office is saying classified materials were properly turned over. former president carter did not receive a letter. as for the biden and trump document cases, the two special counsel investigations continue. reggie: a change coming to restrictions on gam bisexual men donating blood. the fda is proposing a new rules that would allow men in same-sex monogamous relationships to begin donating, even if they

have not abstained from sex. the change could be announced by the end of the year after a public comment period. the fda eased restrictions in 2020, allowing men to have sex with other men to donate, as long as they had not had sex with another man and three months. kumasi: the fda's advisory panel for supporting a plan to simplify covid booster shots. reggie: boosters would become an annual vaccination like the flu shot. it would also simplify the vaccination process by allowing one vaccine recipe for all doses. right now, unvaccinated people who received their first shot get a vaccine targeted at the original covid virus, and booster shots are formulated to combat variance. the fda commissioner would have to sign off before it would go into effect. kumasi: a new study showing that long covid is having an impact on college campuses. 1400 cases of covid among fully vaccinated students and faculty were analyzed.

some categories of people who were at higher risk to long covid. the study's lead author says colleges should continue prevention and litigation strategies to prevent the spread, even as things have changed. reggie: sonoma county will be shutting down mobile testing sites in february because not many are using them. the county says the move to deactivate testing as a part of a statewide demobilization effort of phasing out underutilized state-run testing sites. 44 of the county sites were shattered last week, with 48 more to go in the upcoming month. the population of san francisco has fallen to the lowest level in over a decade. following a long pandemic arab movement in search of affordable housing. the state released estimates showing that for the second year post-covid, the city and the whole bay area has dropped in population. even california's population is at a low. a drop of 0.5% from 2021 to 2022, a smaller decline than the
