killed trying to stop someone from stealing his son's scooter. >> also ahead, protecting the most vulnerable before tonight's freeze warning. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley, and i'm stephanie sierra. the man convicted of kidnaping former vallejo resident denise huskins in 2015, which vallejo police initially called a hoax, is facing more charges. matthew mueller is now accused of two 2009 home invasions and sexual assaults in mountain view and palo alto. >> he was arraigned today to hear the formal charges against him in san jose. abc seven news i-team reporter melanie woodrow has been following this case for years now, quite literally, and is here with a look at these new charges. >> morning, dan and stephanie. he did appear in person today in court for that arraignment. this is all thanks to advances in dna forensic evidence following a new lead, the santa clara county da's office coordinated with palo alto and mountain view police departments to send all evidence back to the crime lab for further testing. convicted kidnaper matthew mueller is now

facing new charges for crimes he allegedly committed 15 years ago. convicted kidnaper matthew mueller facing new charges for crimes he allegedly committed 15 years ago. >> we're very fortunate that this is a case that was continued to be worked on, the santa clara county district attorney's office says the notorious kidnaping convict committed a series of home invasion sexual assaults in mountain view and palo alto with advances in forensic dna testing. >> district attorney criminalist found mueller's dna on straps he allegedly used to bind one of his victims. >> all the evidence that we have points to the one defendant, matthew mueller. >> mueller is now facing two felony counts of committing a sexual assault during a home invasion for the 2009 crimes, according to the santa clara county da's office. in the early hours of september 29th, 2009, mueller broke into a woman's mountain view home, attacked her, tied her up, made her drink a concoction of medications, and said he was going to rape her after the victim in her 30s persuaded him to stop, he

suggested she get a dog and left. on october 18th, 2009, mueller allegedly broke into a palo alto home, bound and gagged a woman in her 30s and made her drink nyquil. he then began to assault her, before she also persuaded him to stop. the da's office says he gave her crime prevention advice before leaving. both cases were investigated and went unsolved. >> what we have been able to do is to eventually solve these two serious crimes, even though 15wo years lapsed, were these two investigations handled perfectly? >> no. six years later, mueller gained national attention in what was mistakenly called the gone girl kidnaping, named after a book and movie where a woman fakes her own abduction. vallejo police initially accused denise huskins, then boyfriend aaron quinn, of murdering her when she turned up two days later in socal, vpd accused the couple of making up the kidnaping. mueller had broken into the couple's vallejo home, drugged and tied them up before kidnaping and sexually assaulting huskins at a cabin in south lake tahoe. detective misty caruso put the

case together while investigating a thwarted dublin home invasion, in which mueller left his cell phone behind. mueller pleaded guilty to kidnaping huskins in 2016 and pleaded no contest to sexually assaulting her in 2022. he's serving a 40 year sentence in federal prison in tucson, arizona. if convicted of these new charges, mueller faces life in prison. denise huskins tells me that she and aaron quinn are aware of the charges, and they're working with law enforcement regarding additional cases as well. she told me she couldn't say more about that due to the ongoing investigations. >> interesting. so we'll wait to see what his plea is for next steps. exactly. all right. thanks, mel. >> all right. go through the timeline for you here a little bit. the saga began on march 23rd, 2015, when mueller broke into the home of huskins boyfriend, tied him up and kidnaped huskins. huskins turned up alive two days later near her parents huntington beach home, as you've heard. on march 27th, authorities labeled the case a hoax, claiming they found no proof of a kidnaping. in june of 2015, the alameda

county sheriff's office arrested mueller as a suspect in a home invasion robbery near dublin. investigators soon found similarities between the robbery and the huskins kidnaping. mueller pleaded guilty to kidnaping charges in september of 2016. he was sentenced to 40 years in prison in march of 2017. >> turning now to weather and get ready for the brr. >> oh, really? spencer christian is here with tonight's freeze warning and what we can expect. how low is it going to go, spencer? oh, it's going to go quite low. >> the brr will be an all uppercase letters tonight. here's a look at the frost advisory. first because we have both frost advisory and a freeze warning. a frost advisory in effect from 8:00 this evening to 10:00 tomorrow morning for the north bay coastal range, the san francisco bay shoreline, the east bay hills and valleys to the peninsula and santa cruz mountains and the santa clara valley. temperatures as low as 34 degrees can produce frost, and of course, frost will likely damage sensitive plants. now let's overlay the freeze warning, also in

area is about highlighting solutions to challenges facing all of our communities, and the city of oakland believes it may have a solution to its public safety crisis. the cease fire program was started 12 years ago and revitalized earlier this year. now, city officials say it's helped oakland have the safest year since the start of the covid pandemic. abc seven news reporter luz pena has the story. >> a drastic drop in murders and shootings in 2024 are giving oakland city and community leaders hope. >> a 34% decrease in the number of homicides to date. a 33% decline in firearms related shootings for the last 12 months. >> the oakland police department, the city's department of violence prevention, and the nonprofit faith in action east bay, among others, worked together to identify over 200 of the most high risk individuals involved in gun violence and offer them a way out. under the ceasefire strategy, we can interrupt the cycles of violence, and that could include anything from

temporarily relocating people out of oakland to make sure that they're not caught in the cycle of gang violence. >> it could be re-enrolling folks in school. it could be reaching out to get employment, training, housing. >> ceasefire was first implemented in 2012 and revitalized this year by recalled mayor sheng tao. >> it was there in name, but it didn't have the resources. for example, the ceasefire unit within police department, there were over 30 officers that were removed from that unit. and so what we did is we put those officers back in that unit. >> opd data shows property crime also decreased in 2024 as recently as last year. yet oakland still had the highest property crime rate when comparing it to similar cities across the country. this has created a sense of fear and impacted small businesses who say they cone to struggle as victims of crime. >> i cannot cut costs almost every day, and talking about they're being robbed. and because of that, you know, many people are facing a lot of issues, including, you know,

their insurance policy being, you know, canceled. and some folks are so worried about if they can still operate in our city. >> oakland faces a historic $129 million budget deficit. the interim mayor highlighted the importance of keeping programs like ceasefire funded to help oakland thrive. >> this is not a victory lap. that is, this is not mission accomplished. we are just getting started. >> in oakland. luz pena, abc seven news. >> we are learning more about what led san francisco police officers to shoot and kill a security guard. officers killed 50 year old peter hodge on december 20th outside the union square dior0th store. police say hodge hit two teenage girls with his car while trying to chase down a man on an e-bike. hours later, officers spotted hodge outside the store where they believe he worked. sfpd said today when officers tried to arrest him, he pulled a gun on them.

united states. tributes are pouring in to honor the life and legacy of former president jimmy carter. >> jimmy carter stands as a model of what it means to live a life of meaning and purpose, a life of principle, of faith and humility. >> carter, who died sunday at 100 years old, was the longest living president in american history, just 56 when he left the white house in 1981 after serving one term. carter and his wife, rosalynn, devoted themselves to humanitarian pursuits for the next 40 years, helping to build homes, working to fight disease, and monitoring foreign elections. >> looking back on it, i wouldn't change it. the life we've had since then, with 35 or more years at the carter center, has opened up a new opportunity for us to serve around 80 countries in the world. >> the former president was awarded the nobel peace prize in 2002, and one of the things that they were known for in the in the white house was their focus on human rights. >> and so he really wanted to continue that as well as work on

brought back to plains, georgia, for a private funeral service. >> we spotted this image of mr. carter on the message board this afternoon at levi's stadium. the 40 niners are planning a moment of silence for the late president before tonight's game. flags at the stadium at half staff and our own spencer. kristen knew the former president for decades. really? >> more than three decades, right? >> yeah, about 31 years. yeah. from when i first met him. yeah. >> wow. and you've met and interviewed six presidents? yeah. what made president carter so special? >> you know, well, they're all special, but. but jimmy carter had an approachability and an everyday man sort of quality. you know, he just seemed like a down to earth, humble man who, of course, is a very bright and accomplished man. oh, he was a he was a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant man. he was a nuclear physicist, naval officer. >> people who didn't know that thought he was a peanut farmer in georgia. and that was the extent of it. >> right, right.

>> you know, it's interesting that, you know, the commemoration of his death and look back at his legacy will be pretty significant, i think, in this, in this country going forward with a national day of mourning and all the events, and that decency really propelled him into the white house, coming out after president nixon and watergate. right? yeah. but in so many ways, his legacy is defined not by his presidency, which was had mixed reviews, to be honest. >> but in the years since his post-presidency. yeah, just just absolutely remarkable. jimmy carter and rosalynn carter devoted their entire lives to serving human humankind around the world, globally, with their global humanitarianism, humanitarianism, eradicating disease in the most impoverished nations in the world, vaccinating children, building houses for the poor through habitat for humanity. i had the pleasure of joining them on one of those bills in washington, d.c, when i was. this was the early 90s. i was with good morning america then, and i did a live report that morning at the location where they were building the house. and then i

got to spend the rest of the day with the carters. i hammered a few nails just to say i had participated, but mainly i was just following them around, tagging along and getting to know them. >> and it wasn't ceremonial. when he did that, they were no. he helped build that house. >> they didn't want cameras around. they wanted to avoid all that and just get in there and build that house. >> you know, i like over the years you've told me stories, get a great sense of humor. and he was just a very generous man. and in spirit, i, like you, used to imitate his, you know, spencer. oh. southern accent. >> the first time i met him, i was interviewing him in 1988, interviewing him on the grounds of the carter presidential library. i was out there setting up with the camera crew early in the morning. he was out for his morning run. oh, this picture is from his 75th birthday celebration in americus, georgia, which i emceed. i had the great honor of him seeing that that was in 1999. but. so i'm setting up for this interview. 1988 he's out for his morning run around the lawn, and he comes jogging up to where we are sweating and he says, hi, spencer, i'm jimmy carter. as if i needed an introduction. and the next words out of his mouth

were, we want you to know the carter family appreciates how kind you were to billy, his younger brother, who was sort of the naughty boy in the family. how kind you were to billy when you interviewed him years ago. and i thought, this is remarkable. the former leader of the free world remembered thanking me and remembering that i was kind to his brother all those years ago. >> what's also remarkable is your relationship with the carters truly, over the years that has been built. and you mentioned the 75th celebration for his birthday, but also the 95th. >> oh, yes. so in 2019, i traveled to plains, georgia to emcee the joint celebration of jimmy carter's 95th and mrs. carter's rosalynn carter's 92nd birthdays. this was held at maranatha baptist church, where he taught sunday school for years and years and years. and it was just amazing to get to know them and continue watching their their love story unfold. over the years. they were so in love with each other and each

cincinnati bengals while he was playing on the road. >> i feel like my privacy has been violated in more ways than one. you know, we live a public life and, you know, one of my least favorite parts of that is the lack of privacy. >> kansas city chiefs players travis kelce and patrick mahomes have also been victims. >> it's frustrating. it's disappointing. >> this month, the fbi warned sports leagues about who could be behind the break ins in a formal warning to sports leagues, the fbi said organized theft groups are targeting professional athletes. they say the groups come from south america and conduct surveillance to prepare for the burglaries. that surveillance includes using publicly available information and social media. they even bypass alarm systems using wi-fi jammers. there are no reports of any bay area athletes that have been targeted. we reached out to local law enforcement agencies to see if they're taking any action. but whether you're a high profile star or not, experts say staying proactive, both with technology and other means is crucial because you need redundancy, you need cameras, you need lights, you
