to meeting with mexico's president but her campaign put out this statement about trump's trip, saying what ultimately matters is what donald trump says to voters in arizona, not mexico, and whether he remains committed to the splitting up of families and deportation of millions. >> yeah, tom, they've hit on the key question for the speech tonight in arizona. trump was a bit inconsistent last week talking about the deportation and there is still a tussle inside his camp about what he's going to say. >> reporter: that's right, i spoke to a senior aide this morning. here's what we know, he's still going call for a physical wall on the southern border and call for an e-verify system with employers and roll back anything regarding executive actions. when i asked about the undocumented immigrants they're leaving that up to mr. trump. they want people to tune in to the speech. >> let's talk about it with matthew dowd. donald trump, full of surprises. this trip to mexico. i think this is the definition of high risk, high reward. >> absolutely. i remember my own trips across the border they have all been high risk, high reward when you see it.

that storm we've been following and following. it should become a tropical storm later today. that's why we have a hurricane watch for the waters. tropical storm warning from north of tampa to tallahassee all the way to panama city. the timing of this is important. it is later thursday, through the morning of friday. for the landfall of this storm. so we're watching the track there take it. the impacts would be five to ten inches of rain, 15 inches max. two to four feet of storm surge in some spots and of course tropical storm-force winds, then we go to the pacific, why we have so much going on. madeline churning, lester churning. that's why we have our neal karlinsky there on hurricane warning this morning. >> reporter: ginger, good morning. we've already been getting hit with intermittent rain and you can see they started boarding up the buildings in hilo, hawaii, very unusual behavior for the hawaiian islands and they are expecting possibly 25-foot wave,

>> okay, martha raddatz, thanks. all right, now to that dangerous air scare. a flight taking off from texas encountering severe turbulence overnight forced to make an emergency landing in ireland. passengers rushed to the hospital and abc's david kerley has the latest now from reagan national airport. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, amy. that jet was nearing the british isles when it hit this unexpected turbulence injuring several passengers and crew members. now, this flight originated in houston. it was on a boeing 767. 223 people on board. it was supposed to be a direct flight to london but the flight tracking site flight aware shows that several hundred miles out the jet hits turbulence and the pilot calls out to head to shannon airport to make an emergency landing in ireland. on the ground emergency crews were waiting. a lot of people were treated. a dozen people, nine adults and three children, amy, were taken to the hospital for treatment. >> do we have any word on the

>> we heard screaming in front of our vessel and noticed people flagging us down and waving. >> reporter: a ferry slamming into the kayaking group. >> got another victim here with a head injury. >> reporter: the water taxi impacted two of the kayaks and multiple people went into the water. >> reporter: you can see the ferry right here after it hit the kayakers. rescuers rushing into the water. five kayakers hospitalized. two critically injured. this woman suffering a head injury. >> can you tell us what happened? >> reporter: the tour guide the most seriously hurt. >> we noticed that there were lacerations to his arm. i started triage on him to stabilize his neck and spine. >> reporter: the kayakers all wearing life vests as required by the kayak tour company. initial reports say the captain said that sun glare prevented him from seeing the group. and this morning we're told the ferry's captain has been tested for drugs and alcohol. all of his results came back clean so, right now, this just appears to be a terrible accident.

>> gio, thanks so much. well, now to frightening moments at a gas station in connecticut. take a look as a driver backs into one of the pumps knocking it over and then sparking a fire that quickly engulfs two vehicles, one of the cars had two children in the backseat. a woman on the other side of the pump quickly ran in and was able to pull the kids to safety just in time. they were not injured. the driver who backed into the pump apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake so another unfortunate accident. thankfully, everyone got out okay. >> could have been so much worse. could have been a huge explosion. u.s. open, triumphant return to new york for serena williams. big win for her. t.j. holmes here with more. >> yes, you know, all eyes are always on serena but especially this time because, what, she just came off that loss, that shocking loss in rio. three weeks ago and she just pulled out of a tournament last week because of a shoulder injury. she's going to be 35 next month, tough first round opponent. how is she going to respond? i'd say pretty well.

a lot are surprised. chris harrison will join us -- >> you weren't surprised, george? we'll have much more on that coming up. but we begin with the latest on chris brown. the singer arrested after an hours-long standoff with los angeles police accused of assault with a deadly weapon after a woman claimed he pointed a gun at her in his home. abc's kayna whitworth spoke with her and is in los angeles with all the latest. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: amy, good morning. baylee curran tells me that she originally went to the singer's house wh there lit up behind me to see if she could perhaps star in his next music video but, as the night went on according to her brown's behavior became more erratic and she ended up running for her life leaving from the backyard. overnight, singer chris brown arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. and now the woman behind it all is speaking out. >> terrified. absolutely terrified. >> reporter: 25-year-old baylee curran telling abc news brown pulled a gun on her. at his los angeles mansion.

because, hello, he's holding a gun to me. >> reporter: curran says the hours-long standoff began when someone brought over a box of expensive diamond jewelry which she says she admired. >> and i was just standing over admiring it not touching it and then one of chris' friends said, back away from the diamonds, and that's when chris came in and said i'm so sick of all of you people. took the gun out like this. put it in my face and said get the "f" out. >> did you think he would pull the trigger? >> i thought he was going to shoot me. >> reporter: the los angeles police department receiving the frantic 911 call at 3:00 a.m. tuesday morning. >> two females unknown crying and asking for help. >> reporter: police surrounding the star's home trying to make contact with him while the singer took to instagram posting his claims of innocence. >> when you get the warrant or whatever you need to do you're going to walk right up in here and you're going to see nothing, you idiots. >> reporter: hours later brown and several of his friends

searched by police. this isn't the singer's first run-in with the law. in 2009 brown pleaded guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to five years' probation, a year-long domestic violence class and six months community service for assaulting his then-girlfriend superstar rihanna. brown completed that probation early last year. overnight, brown's attorney tweeting, thank you to everyone foth wishes. chris is out and well. the allegations against him are demonstrably false. brown was released after posting $250,000 bail. now, we've also learned overnight that curran is wanted for questioning in new york in a grand larceny case. according to the new york police department, she and a friend are accused of stealing a wallet from another woman. amy. >> all right.

joining us now, abc news senior legal correspondent sunny hostin. sunny, there is a lot to weed through here. how bad does this look for chris brown? >> well, it certainly looks bad, amy, because we are now seeing what seems to be a history of violent and abusive behavior starting with the 2009 assault on rihanna. he did serve many, many years of probation, approximately six years, that probation was lifted in march of 2015 just last year but only after he violated that probation for assaulting someone in a washington, d.c., hotel in 2014. and so we're seeing this over comes to chris brown and that is not a good place to be in the criminal justice system. we see recidivism very, very often when it comes to violent and abusive behavior so yet now another complaint about this kind of behavior is going to be looked at very, very closely by prosecutors reviewing the case. >> and speaking of seeing chris brown we saw a lot of him throughout this on these instagram rants. what do you make of those and

>> you know, i think prosecutors are going to look at it. let's be clear. he hasn't been formally charged yet. his arraignment is going to be september 20th. i did reach out to his attorney my good friend mark geragos, who says these allegations are completely false. but i think that it's very fascinating that social media is possibly going to be used as evidence in this case or at least reviewed by prosecutor, not only did chris brown the alleged defendant post it. ray j. was also in the home and he posted on instagram saying this was false then the alleged victim also posted on instagram indicating that this was true. and so, you know, i think we're seeing over and over again the clash between technology and social media and the law and that being used as evidence. we saw it very, very clearly in the killing of philando castile when that facebook live piece just came out and everyone got

assaulting an unconscious victim and now set to be released from jail friday after serving half that time. sunny hostin is back and, sunny, turner getting released for good behavior but still seems surprising given the debate about his sentence. >> i don't think that it's not only surprising, i think it's outrage that people have about this sentence, george. i mean, the bottom line is he's only going to spend three months in a jail cell for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a garbage dumpster. i think we can all agree that that sentence is way too short. is it a surprise that he's only going to serve three months out of the six months? no, because in california, basically they have this prison realignment going on and so most inmates only serve half of their sentence. >> there was no discretion from the judge there on getting out early. >> no, there was discretion, the prosecutors recommended six years. he was facing 14 years but, because of the judge's discretion in this case, he only was sentenced to six months, thus, leading to the outrage in this case. i think there's this legal loophole in california that now

>> right now they're going to try to close that, i understand lawmakers in that state just passed a new measure in hopes of addressing cases just like this one. tell us about it. >> that's right. what is remarkable is that under california law, up until this time, amy, you could rape, sexually assault an unconscious person and not have a mandatory prison sentence. the judge had a lot of -- not leniency but a lot of discretion. vote, california lawmakers have now found it's going to be a mandatory three-year sentence for this exact behavior. sending a message to sexual assault victims everywhere that they matter and that people that sexually assault must spend three years in prison when the victim is unconscious. i say very, very wonderful for california. but this is something that we should see across the country.
